Speaking of banners, one of my volunteer tasks at the 2007 UCI Road World Championships in Stuttgart was to hang a 50m-long (2m high) banner/bunting, the main purpose of which was to hide an empty lot next to the race course, and also to lend a bit of atmosphere--it was done up in the event's colours and design. I couldn't find a picture of it on the Internet but it would have been visible on TV.

I had about a half-dozen people ask me if they could have it after the race while I was putting it up; needless to say, I didn't have to worry about taking it down.

Teebz:

And I thought for a long time that you were a stand-up guy.

Just because no one has been prosecuted (we really don't know if it has or not, do we...?), doesn't make it right.
You questioned Paul when Paul doesn't even own it or have it in his possession. There have been an infinite amount of cases in the history of man of people taking items from sporting events as a piece of history. Why is this any different?

Does the city of Atlanta still have them displayed all over the city? You know, 12 years after the fact the Olympics were there? No. So who cares? If someone did take them, the city would have more than likely sold them to the public at an inflated cost. If that were to happen, they'd end up in the trash and someone would grab them from there.

Besides, who "owns" the Olympics? Atlanta taxpayers put up a helluva lot of money to have them there, so shouldn't they be entitled to some of the history without having to shell out more dough to get a piece of history?

Trent, the point is that you directed your angst at someone who simply gave our raffle guy a forum to raffle off something in his possession. The penal code of the US government really doesn't apply here unless you're prosecuting the guy in possession of the good for the raffle, and the person winning the raffle.

As for my comedic musings, I'm sorry if I offended you, but sometimes a spade must be called a spade.

Watching the Olympic softball tournament... could they just get rid of those ridiculous shorts already? They are more suited for a basketball team to begin with.
They go with the high socks as a uniform component, and most of the players then wear sliding shorts and knee pads to to protect their legs.
Just wear pants! So you can either hide or get rid of all the accessories!

The starting Italian libero was injured, so one of the other players came in as the emergency replacement. While his vest looked like Adidas, the Italian team wore Asics.

I just caught the end of the USA vs. Italy men's volleyball game and I noticed that Italy's Libero was seemingly wearing a simple red sleeveless adidas shirt over his existing jersey... and it appeared to be inside out no less!! I don't have the screen grab capability, I was wondering if anyone else caught this... Also, Does anyone else think that the USA men's beach volleyball jerseys look an awful lot like the Nike S.O.D. basketball jerseys?

Paul:

I am glad to see that you waited for the Statute of Limitations on Felony Theft and Receiving Stolen Property expired before you decided to give away that 1996 Olympics banner in your raffle.
I think you missed your stop. The Buzzkill Deli, where they serve the famous "Who Gives A Rat's Ass" sandwich, was three clicks before this. You should have stayed there.

If you don't want to be part of the raffle, don't enter. Paul isn't raffling it off. He simply is using his blog as a place for someone else to raffle something off. Perhaps you missed the part that said <i>"It’s not every day a reader offers to raffle off something"</i>. It's not even in Paul's possession, as stated here: <i>"It currently belongs to reader Mike Burnett"</i>.

And since there are a pile of other people in Atlanta who were prosecuted for felony theft, I'd be happy to hear their tales of how they were forced to do community service/jail time for their removal of the banners.

What's that, you say? There were no prosecutions? Go figure.
Interesting how you make money to "blog" for free.
WTF is that supposed to mean?
TheJonGates, love the dolphin carrying the football! That's really cool. And interesting designs. I think there's a way to keep some classic Dolphins elements while removing the bizarre, anatomically impossible "M" helmet.
