Witih Brett Favre’s situation finally resolved, Roger Goodell decided it was OK for the world to start spinning again. Among other edicts (like finally allowing NFL employees to go to the bathroom instead of watching the non-stop Brett coverage on that TV station I work for), he came down from the mountaintop with two tablets that read, “OK, you can start the preseason now (not that anyone really cares, but it’s a fun way to bilk some extra change from our season ticket holders).” And so it came to pass that several teams descended upon that gridiron last night.
As you know, this is shaping up as a quiet season uni-wise, but I spotted a few noteworthy items in last night’s action:
• Good to see the Bears are still using that horizontal yoke darting. (If you’re not familiar with it, look here for further details.)
• Sure enough, the logo-emblazoned green helmet dot just looks dirty or smudgy when viewed from a distance. Doesn’t look so great up close either. Lame. (I couldn’t find a photo of a defensive helmet dot — anyone..?)
• Here are our first in-game views of the Lions’ 75th-season patch. Can’t stand how much black it adds to the proceedings. Kinda big too, no?
• Man, those new black stripes on the officials’ pants sure are heavy.
• Didn’t watch this game, but it sure looks like it was easy on the eyes. Very nice.
• You don’t need to hate purple as much as I do to be alarmed by this.
• His future looks, uh, bright.
And finally, although it didn’t take place on the field, take a look at this shot. As several commenters noted last night, the two microphones show two different versions of the NFL Network logo.

Whitewash: Reader Tim Brulia has undertaken a Herculean research project: He and some friends have documented every single instance of NFL teams wearing white at home since 1957. He’s offered this database to me, and I’ve uploaded it onto this page — enjoy.
Olympix Outreach: I will not be near a TV set tonight or during the weekend, so I’ll miss all the bullshit the opening ceremonies and the several days’ worth of competition. Won’t be near a computer either, so I won’t be able to check in on the comments to see what you folks are noticing over the weekend. I am interested in compiling a record of what’s going on in Beijing, however. So if you see anything noteworthy over the next few days, don’t assume that I’m watching it too — instead, send me an e-mail with “Olympics” in the subject line. I’ll start sifting through the material once I get back to civilization on Sunday night.

Raffle Reminder: Today’s the last day for the SoccerPro.com $100 gift card raffle. If you haven’t done so already, you can enter by sending a blank e-mail with your name in the subject line to the raffle address (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address, please) by 10pm eastern tonight. One entry per person, unless you’re enrolled in the Uni Watch membership program, in which case you can send up to four entries. I’ll announce the winner next Monday, when I’ll also be announcing yet another raffle.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The USA men’s soccer team is also playing without the USA soccer crest, just like the women. Further info here (although I’m not sure how accurate the writer’s assessment is). … A Washington letter carrier wants to trade in his uniform pants for a kilt, which would certainly give new meaning to the term “going postal.” Details here (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). … Speaking of non-sports uniforms, here’s a note from frequent flier Minna H.: “Here’s an interesting article about a Frank Lloyd Wright gas station in Cloquet, Minnesota that’s celebrating its 50th anniversary. The attendants will be wearing period unis, and anyone driving a classic car gets gas at 1950s prices.” … Joel Kirstein has created a three-part survey of Olympics logos. Check it out here, here, and here. … Lincoln King spotted the Astros’ strength and conditioning coach, Gene Coleman, wearing a jersey and shorts prior to Wednesday’s ’Stros/Cubs game. His jersey had an NOB but no number. … Equipment note from Jacob Little, who writes: “During Wednesday’s White Sox game, color man Steve Stone mentioned a new method to organize the players bats in the dugout. Instead of being listed by name or number on the cubby, they’re listed by the player’s country of origin (or in the U.S. players’ case, by state of origin). I’ll be at two games during this homestand, so I’ll try to grab a picture.” … Another guy with a pin on his cap: Frank Robinson during his Giants managerial stint. Hard to tell if it’s the old Croix de Candlestick pin (full details on that are here), but it probably is — the timeline matches up (with thanks to Andy Chalifour). … Latest awesome photo contribution from Jared Wheeler: Monte Cross of the Philadelphia A’s wearing a killer sweater. … You knew Johnny U. finished his career with the Chargers. But did you know he wore blue high-tops? (Thanks to Matt Mitchell.) … Lots of the Ravens are wearing that Gouge-Gard protective helmet film, as seen here, here, here, here, and here (with thanks to Jack Krabbe). … Good thing the Yankees are such a classy organization (with thanks to Steven Samuels). … Big article here about Under Armour. … Here’s the new Colorado jersey — interesting. Kinda need to see it with pads, but I’m actually more intrigued than appalled. Additional pics here (with thanks to Robert Andrew Powell). … New design for Houston too, going from this to this. … Wanna see something really, really cool? Go here and move the slider from year to year (big thanks to KJ Kearney). … Doesn’t really look so weird. … Appalachian State will be wearing throwbacks on September 6th to mark coach Jerry Moore’s 20th year. Additional pics here. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Check out Fernando Tatis from Wednesday night’s Mets/Padres game — for once, a helmet dot Ticker item that has nothing to do with the NFL. … “Okay,” says Nile Smith, “so last year and the year before you might have noticed how Ohio State players changed from wearing white socks to black. But during yesterday’s team photo, almost everyone had white socks. Hopefully this doesn’t change back during the season. It sounds tiny and odd, but Ohio State fans went ballistic when they switched from white socks to black.” … I’m deeply saddened — and, frankly, a little offended — to report that Len Kasper and Bob Brenly did not mention Uni Watch on the air yesterday. The fact that the Cubs had an off day is no excuse.

Shame about the Postal Service not allowing the kilts. For one thing, the UtiliKilt brand kilts in the photo are really comfortable. For another, the Post Office already has its own registered tartan:

I’m missing something… how are the two NFL logos on the mikes in that picture different? They look the same to me, though the blues and reds appear to be ever so slightly different (which could be due to different glare, since they are at slightly different angles?)
Several commenters apparently noted something, but I can’t spot the difference. I must be missing something incredibly obvious. What’s the deal?

Funny it hasn’t gone mentioned, but apparently the NFL is so insecure about its new logo that the crest is now plastered dead center on every NFL official’s hat:
Logo’d Officials Hat
I’ve always liked the fact that the referee’s hat is white, while other officials’ hats are black. The logo emblazoned on the hats ruins this classy and subtle move. As if we spectators will be watching TV and utter, “Now, what professional football league is this again?”

When I was playing college football (and even in high school), playing in black socks was a big deal for us too. But we were players…I didn’t know fans cared.
But I think Ohio State looks good in the black on black. And besides, it doesn’t matter what color socks they rock–if they make it to the National Championship against a SEC team, they could wear Superman’s cape and they still will get busted!

Don’t compare Clemens to Favre, that’s a ridiculous insult. Clemens was/is a loud-mouthed steriod-fuled idiot who’ll be known for the rest of his life as a no-class cheater. Favre is a flip-flopper, he’ll be known as a great QB that couldn’t make up his mind. There’s a pretty large difference there.I’m not sure why people try so hard to compare people, especially sports figures, all the time. People are just one of a kind, leave it that way, stop trying to pretend that, “oh….he’s just like _____, blah blah blah!” No, Favre’s just like Favre, the end. Go Jets, BTW! Lets get that draft pick as high as possible.

stupid quote of the week (from NYT article on UA)
Wow, holy hyperbole. Deos someone want to get Ms. Faludi a book of sports metaphors (I’m sure there is an online glossary to help her out). To compare the “protect this house” concept (i.e. not getting beat on one’s home venue) to 9/11 is quite the stretch (and I’m being polite).

I don’t think Brett should have retired if he really didn’t want to retire. But, the feel I get from all of this is that the Packers really didn’t want him back for the last two years of his contract and pushed the issue. I think the whole mess was handled poorly from both sides. But, I’m going to come down on Brett’s side because through all of this mess his focus seemed to be on playing.
By the way … what happens if the Jets cut Brett before the season starts and Brett signs with Minnesota? Do the jets owe Green Bay a fourth round pick? Does Ted Thompson’s head explode?

I find it amusing that Michael Strahan basically did that last year: decided, oh hell no I ain’t going to training camp, and just waltzed in when the season began. And yet at the end of the season far from being labeled a “diva who insists on separate rules” was actually lauded as a pretty smart guy for avoiding two-a-days and winning himself a ring.
Brett went about this the wrong way. I think he knew at his retirement press conference that he didn’t want to call it quits permanently. It was just that he didn’t want to go through the whole training camp experience again. He should have gone to Packers’ management and told them that. That would have put the ball in the Packers court and would have forced them to either let Brett slide on the basis that he’s a legend and deserves the break from training camp or refuse and risk the possible fallout from the Green Bay media and fans.

Favre will be remembered as a guy who for several years debated retiring, held the fudge packers hostage with the draft by not giving them answers for several years, finally retires then the packers move on and he decides they he wants to come back even though the team is moving on. He then complains that he shouldn’t have to compete for the job and it should just be his when the team needs to move on.

Grossman would have been one of the best QBs ever if Ron Zook had not been his coach. He teaches quarterbacks that they can fit a football into a hole the size of a baseball. He did the same thing to Chris Leak, or started to before Urban Meyer came in and returned Leak to the QB that he was. Zook also had stupid plays that involved the quarterback becoming a receiver of a pass from a runningback or from a wide receiver on a reverse. Grossman would have won the Heisman as a redshirt freshman, not Couch. Zook then ruined his career.

They just released their starting quarterback, I doubt they would release Favreand let Clemens start with no backup.
Two things:
1) Packers obviously scared shitless of Favre coming Vikings. And why shouldn’t they be. On paper–and to a great extent on the field–Vikings have a decent chance to run off and hide with NFC title…even without Favre. With him, as Chris Carter said on Mike & Mike, “They’d be frightening.”
2) Can’t really blame Packers for moving on. Local sportstalk station here played sound bites of Favre going back to ‘03, and every year he talks about not knowing if he’ll come back. I imagine that got a little old for Packer management and coaches after awhile.

The original question was whether the Packers had any recourse if Favre was cut. Someone responded with the penalty if the Jets traded Favre.
Can something be put into a contract not allowing a team to release someone? I can’t believe the NFL would allow another team to dictate what player a club could cut from its roster. I guess there’s always the risk to the Packers that the Jets conceivably could cut Favre and he would sign with the Vikings. But I can’t believe that the NFL would allow some sort of clause that says “The Jets cannot release Brett Favre or else they would have to send X number of picks to the Packers in return”. What happens if Brett just doesn’t work out?

#68 by Ricko on 08.08.08 12:14 pm |
Yeah, they can release him. That stuff about draft choices only relates to a trade. Limiting a team’s ability to cut a player is indirectly forcing them to keep him. You can put conditions on a trade because it implies the player still has value to the team, because they want something in return. But, if they think he’s valuelss to them, they have every right to cut him.

very observant. the ravens are missing from the list. however, i believe they have worn white at home from time to time. it’s up to the guys who made the list to document it for us.

App State throwbacks..
Gee, how old-fashioned. No zigs, zags, piping, fangs, claw marks, tire treadmarks, sports bra, armpit circles or team NOF.
And what appear to be…stripes of some sort, even apparently on the pants.
Why’d anybody wanna wear THAT.
(ooo, the sarcasm drips)

kek,
You’re welcome. MUCH credit has to go to Kyle, who compiled much of the info from the 80’s to present as well as Kevin who is also deeply involved in football uni research.
One little tidbit is the fact that for a three year stretch (1968-1970) the Rams never wore their blue jerseys.

Ravens were on the white jersey list, the team name wasn’t boldened… From said list
Ravens; 2002 vs. Bucs; 2003 vs. Browns; 2004 vs. Steelers; 2006 vs. Raiders
Not uni-related, but tonight’s/today’s order of nations for the opening ceromonies is pretty unique…

*All of those games were their season home opener. It can still be really hot in mid September in Baltimore so going with the all white should be cooler than the dark jerseys.

Are the Yankees the only team that doesn’t sport Cool-Base jerseys?
On another Yankees-related note, I never realized how tall Richie Sexson really is. That patch on the sleeve looks like it’s hanging really low, but that could be a result of the huge sleeve.

I’m slightly surprised given that, the Ravens haven’t worn white at home more. With their first game at home at 1:00 this season I’ll wager a nickel they’ll be wearing white then.

Ravens are not missing from the list — their heading just wasn’t in boldface, so it was harder to make out (same with the Lions). Now fixed.

Ives Galarcep is an established soccer writer who has good sources. I trust him on this if he says we can blame the IOC for the lack of a crest on the US uniforms (or, alternatively, USSF for not figuring out that a non-official crest wouldn’t violate the stupid rule).

re: Discussion of Chicago Cougars jerseys yesterday. As I thought, the three-stripe pattern was on the shoulder yoke, too.
