I know for a fact that several MLB broadcasters read Uni Watch. One of them, who I won’t name here, occasionally trades e-mails with me during games. To my knowledge, however, neither my ESPN column nor this site has ever been mentioned during an MLB broadcast.
Until yesterday, that is. Apparently someone informed Cubbies play-by-play man Len Kasper (that’s him on the left in the photo shown above) that I’d run a transcript of his recent uni-centric banter with color man Bob Brenly (on the right), and at least one of them was rather amused by the whole thing. Here’s how it went down during the bottom of the 6th in yesterday’s Cubs/Astros game:
Kasper: Hey, Bob, we have a follow-up from our weekend conversation about Doug Mientkiewicz and his uniform, and the buttons. The Astros have the same setup as the Pirates, and pretty much every team in baseball. You see how it’s unevenly spaced — they have the two buttons at the top, but then they leave space for the “Houston.” That’s called pro buttoning — there’s actually a name for it. The folks at UniWatchBlog.com put up a transcript of our conversation…
Brenly [chuckling]: Oh, geez…
Kasper: … about Doug Mientkiewicz. So that’s the pro button style. And the Cubs’ home pinstripes, and the blue alternate tops, which they are wearing [today], are the only ones in baseball that are not of the pro button style. You see, it’s evenly spaced, because they don’t have a team name across the middle. There was a big article on ESPN.com about uniform styles back in late May. So thanks to the folks at UniWatchBlog.com for noticing. I didn’t know that, that it had a name — pro button.
Brenly [sounding mildly impatient with the topic]: Why should you know that?
Kasper: And what can happen with the pro button style is billowing, meaning the uniform goes out a little bit because there’s a big space between the second and third buttons. I don’t know if billowing was a problem for you when you played, but it’s an epidemic around the game today.
Brenly [very sarcastically]: Oh, what are we gonna do? [Camera shows close-up of Astros jersey.]
Kasper: Now, they — do they have a little Velcro in there, keeping the “Houston” together? Some teams have that, too. [Hitter strikes out, briefly necessitating some actual game commentary.] Called strike three. [Now back to important matters.] There’s all kinds of stuff like this on the internet.
Brenly [with an exasperated chuckle of barely concealed disgust]: Okay.
Kasper [on a roll now]: Everything you need to know about baseball uniforms. The Phillies had the zippers, right? [Director inexplicably chooses to show a dachsund outside the stadium.] That dog’s not that interested.
Brenly [with an air of what he clearly hopes will be finality]: All I know is I was happy every day I got to the ballpark and there was one hanging in my locker. They could’ve taken all the buttons off of it. Could’ve had one big button right in the middle, I didn’t care, as long as there was one hanging in my locker.
Kasper [apparently skimming through the aforementioned ESPN column]: I guess the Washington Nationals’ red alternate uniforms also do not have the pro button style. So we’ll have to ask Doug Mientkiewicz if he’s a fan of that particular style.
—————
And that’s where that particular bit of discourse ended. The funny thing is, Brenly’s the one who first brought up Mienkiewicz’s buttons last weekend, and he’s also the one who suggested that the Pirates’ jerseys could use some Velcro. But I guess he just wasn’t in the mood yesterday.
Anyway: I assume someone will bring today’s entry to Kasper’s attention. So hey, Len, get in touch — I’ve got a Uni Watch membership card with your name on it. And there’s one for you too, Bob, but only if you stop being so uni-grouchy.
Raffle Reminder: Remember, there’s soccer raffle currently underway. If you haven’t already entered, look here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Looks like the new OKC team’s new name is out of the bag. … The USA women’s soccer team usually wears the national soccer crest on their chest (here’s a clearer view) and shorts. But in yesterday’s Olympic opener against Norway, they were crest-free on both their jerseys and shorts, so the only visible mark on the uniforms was, well, guess. … The 2008 World Series logo and 2009 All-Star Game logo have been released. The ASG design clearly wins, since it has two “TM” marks and two circle-R marks (plus a sternum-level Majestic logo if you want a T-shirt), while the World Series logo has two circle-Rs but only one TM. So the ASG legal team wins home-field advantage in this year’s “Whose Lawyers Are Bigger Douchebags?” sweepstakes. … While we’re at it, Ryan C. Johnston was at Busch Stadium the day the ASG logo was unveiled and took some pics of the ceremonies, which I’ve gathered into this slideshow. Seems like a bit much for a logo for an exhibition game, no? … Tom Shieber notes that Robinson Cano’s memorial armband for Bobby Murcer was missing on Monday night. … Shieber also reports that he’s made a change to the “Dressed to the Nines” exhibit: “On the section devoted to ‘Names and Numbers,’ I’ve changed the table detailing retired numbers to include (as best as I can determine) the exact date when each number was retired. There are still a few question marks and entries in which the date is ‘unknown,’ but happily I’ve managed to track down the vast majority. Additions, corrections, suggestions are most welcome.” … Did the Durham Bulls once wear satin jerseys or BP tops? To see why I ask, look here and here (with thanks to Jay Sandora). … In addition to those new Syracuse jerseys, there will also be a new helmet, with white outlining on the “S” and the return of the white center stripe. Good analysis of the school’s overall changes here. … Interesting note from decal guru Chris Willis regarding the thin plastic film on this helmet: “There’s actually a decal across the front of the helmet that works the same way the plastic on a new phone/ipod/electronics item does. It’s called a Gouge-Gard, and it’s marketed by Creative Football Concepts out of New Jersey. It’s a clear decal that’s cut so that it will conform to the shape of the helmet and it is used mostly for training camp and preseason to protect the front of the helmet from getting gouged up too quickly, especially if it’s a painted helmet. The equipment guys have enough to do during camp.” … According to this page, there are rumors (and I stress that there’s nothing more solid than that) that Nike wants USC to wear black jerseys against Ohio State (with thanks to Glenn Tanner). … “At first glance,” says Greg Riffenburgh, “this Adidas template doesn’t look so bad. A little weird, maybe, but there have definitely been worse. Then I saw this. And this.” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Jaw-droppingly great photo of Paul Hornung. … Another great old Otis Shepard program cover for the Cubs here (with thanks to Andrew Tanker). … I’m all in favor of high cuffs, but not if they’re so high that your stirrups’ laundry tag is exposed. … Good article here about Michigan’s transition from Nike to Adidas (with thanks to Greg DiLeo). … Here’s something you don’t often see: a gallery of Nebraska media guides from 1964-1990 (nice find by Brian Hansen). … The WHA’s Chicago Cougars’ home jersey looked like this, but for years Matt Mallonee thought it looked like this (closer views here and here). Here’s why: “This sweater has been in my family for quite some time, first with my uncle then my dad. My dad said they used to go to games at the old Barn when he was a kid, and at some point they bought this sweater. He was sure it was what the players wore, and I had no reason to doubt him. However, one day I got curious and looked the Cougars up. Well, he was only 11 or 12 at the time, so I can forgive him. In actuality, the cougar on the sweater is wearing the team’s actual design!” Man, that is a fantastic design. Anyone know more about this item? … The Reebok logo on the Steelers’ pants has always looked like this, but Brinke Guthrie notes that it now apparently looks like this, which is not what I’d call an improvement, unless you’re a Reebok shareholder. … Michigan State has added a pants stripe. … Who knew Rudy Giuliani played hockey? … As most of you know, I tend to prefer fun logo mascots over snarly ones. But not everyone agrees (with thanks to Matt Monsour). … Check out this shot of Nolan Ryan. He always batted right-handed, so why is he wearing a lefty batting helmet in that photo? Maybe it’s a double-flapper? … FNOB alert from Matt Englander: “Matt Elliott had FNOB as a member of the Michigan Wolverines in the early ’90s (that shot is from the 1990 UM vs. OSU game). I am guessing he had to do so because Jumbo Elliott was also on the squad at that time. He was later selected at the very end of the 1992 NFL draft, a true Mr. Irrelevant who achieved relevancy by wearing his entire name on the back of his jersey.” … Remember that “10 Worst Philly Uniforms” list? Here’s its 10 best counterpart (with thanks to Pete Salveson). … Amusing Yet Appalling Dept.: Here’s a story about a guy obsessed with finding a “Patriots 19-0″ T-shirt (with thanks to Daniel Ostroff-Moskowitz). … Rare non-Wisconsin-related report from Nicole Haase, who writes: “So I’m watching Project Runway tonight, and the challenge is to create an outfit for the team to wear for the opening ceremony. They go to a place called the Armory and meet with Apolo Anton Ohno, who’s tells them this is the challenge and then invites them to go look at a museum there that has a history of Americans in the Olympics. Looks like your kind of place — the little that they showed in the episode made me want to go there, like, NOW. I actually turned on my laptop just to send this to you, so I did a quick google search and didn’t come up with anything, but hopefully you know what this place is, because if you haven’t been there, it seems to me you have to go. And hopefully they have maybe this new place (which is right here in NYC, but I haven’t gotten around to checking it out yet)? … “I’ve always been a big hat collector,” writes Tim Stoops. “Imagine the tribbles in Star Trek, only with hats, and you have my room. So in March I started taking daily pictures of each one and posting them on Flickr. I’m up 147.” … Nevada’s helmets have apparently changed from this to this. I assume there’s a corresponding uniform change, but I haven’t seen pics of that yet (with thanks to Mike Etheridge). … There are two new books about branding that tie in with a lot of my gripes about logo creep. The first is Steve Heller’s Iron Fists: Branding in the 20th-Century Totalitarian State, which finds parallels between Hitler’s, Mao’s, Mussolini’s, and Stalin’s propaganda machines and modern marketing/branding applications (and no, I’m not comparing Phil Knight to Hitler, so calm down). I just got a copy of this and hope to write about it soon, but for now there’s an insightful review and some great artwork here. The second book is Lucas Conley’s OBD: Obsessive Branding Disorder. Lots of reviews here, and you can see Conley doing a good interview with Stephen Colbert below (with thanks to Joe Alviani for tipping me wise to the video clip):

Now that Oklahoma City is now the Thunder, what are the Golden State Warriors going to do? Thunderbolts are a large part of their logos. Even their mascot is named Thunder. Let’s hope that they go back to their old logos.

I heard the Cubs game, weird because Brenley is usually the most unicentric of the two. He babbles on quite a bit about uniforms, sunglasses and other accessories.
ON ANOTHER NOTE: I am one of those insane soccer fans who awoke at 5 a.m. eastern time to watch the US play Japan in the Olympics. BRIAN MCBRIDE had uni issues. He wore No. 17 but the “1″ on the front of his jersey came off in the first half. They fixed it at half time….but it came off again. Anyone get a screen grab?

Note to Jets: Please, please, please do NOT wear the green & green combo. Really have no desire to see what Brett Favre looked like if he’d played in the early 60’s CFL, the Arena league or for some rural, backwater high school without the manpower or budget to keep white pants clean.

Syracuse finally got the football uniforms right (the on field performance is another story). Now stop tinkering with it! Go work on making the basketball uniforms respectable again.

Addendum: In fact, don’t wear the green pants at all. Because they look exaclty as I’ve mentioned above. Very bush league, especially when your current uni is the one you wore winning arguably the most famous and significant Super Bowl game ever played.
All that being said…Man, between the Jets and the Giants it should be fun pro football season for New York fans. Enjoy.

Brenley probably came here and saw that he got zinged for wearing a yellow shirt under the Cubs powder blues.
Or, he’s doing the typical macho jock thing: If I notice something about unis it’s okay. If you do, you’re weird.

As a little bit more inside of me dies knowing that Brett Favre will be now known as “Broadway Brett”, I can’t help but kind of want to get a green and white Favre jersey… oh wait…=)
I am now officially a Packers fan first, but a Jets fan second. Hey New York fans… please treat Brett well.

As a ‘Cuse student, I’m glad to see that the team has decided to stop looking like a joke (even if it still performs like one on the field). The re-addition of the white brings us back to the good ol’ days of Donovan McNabb.

Did anyone watching the Cards - Dodgers game last notice Cards outfielder Skip Shumaker’s batting helmet toward the end of the game? It was hard to tell if it was a shadow but it sure looked like the bill of his helmet had a large crack in his last two at-bats. Anyone else notice this?

I live in Chicago, but am not a Cubs (or Sox) fan. However, I will watch Cubs games much more than Sox (or even national ESPN and TBS) because of Len Kasper. I think he’s a smart, funny, interesting announcer, much in the mold of the late Skip Carey (although not as sardonic).
He really is one of the more underrated play-by-play announcers in the league.

The US Men had no crest as well. Japan had the ol’ Rising Sun, not the Japan Football Association logo. I believe it is an Olympic rule.

Also on the Brett jersey front - lots of possible Favre misspellings reported in the local paper:
For sale in New York: Favre everything
Sports memorabilia sellers were up in the wee hours making hay of Brett Favre’s trade to the New York Jets.
On ebay, one seller is offering a “FARVE NYJ” New York license plate - complete with misspelling.
Someone else is trying to get $3,000 for brettfarve.nyjets.com.
Yes, the seller botched the spelling of that one, too.
A generous sports fan is offering to sell a used No. 4. jersey for former Jets quarterback Glenn Foley. The seller notes the buyer can switch the nameplate on the back “and you would have a $175 jersey at a much more modest price.”
In the New York area, fans are sure to fork over money for Favre jerseys, gear and other collectibles, as soon as fans figure out who he is.
An employee at Modell’s Sporting Goods location in Brooklyn hadn’t been clued in yet.
“What’s the name?” she said, when asked whether Favre jerseys were available.
Then, “What team does he play for?”
At least the employees have heard of Favre at the company’s store in Newark, NJ.
Assistant store manager Sammy Gonzalez said just before the store opened today that he’s already received a few phone calls seeking Favre jerseys.
Modell’s Web site is already advertising Favre jerseys in Jets green for $80, though the pictures are generic - no number 4.
And those jerseys for sure-to-be outgoing quarterback Chad Pennington?
“We’re getting ready to do a bunch of price changes,” Gonzalez said.

Here’s the thing, though. Argentina, Brazil, and even freakin’ HONDURAS have their Federation crests on their uniforms. Not the United States. Not Italy. Not even Sepp Blatter’s Germany.
I think there’s more to this story. It can’t be an “IOC rule” that keeps a Federation logo off a uniform. What would that do for ice hockey, for example? Would the United States have to remove the flying USA off their jersey?
This should be receiving as much blog coverage as Obama and his USA flag pin! Where are the neocon babblers when you need them the most? Oh, right … they’re working on Paris Hilton.

I think what we saw on the South American teams were generic crests, all I have to double check though.
One other Uni-Tid Bit from the US/Japan game: Marvell Wynne had his Jersey ripped around the 30th minute. If you want to see Brian McBride with just the 7 on the front of his shirt, watch the replay on nbcolympics.com, it happens in the 37th minute.

Actually, for reasons I’m not sure of, your transcript post got waylaid by the auto-moderator and was never posted to the full site (you could see it, but nobody else could). Once I saw it in the moderation queue, I didn’t approve it, because I didn’t want to give away the full transcript before I ran my own transcription as the meat of today’s entry. He and Messier are wearing two different jerseys in terms of the manufacturer. The necklines are completely different, making me think that one is a Starter jersey, and the other is a CCM jersey. Gretzky wore Starter jerseys in New York until he retired. Ironically, that photo might be one of the few photos of Gretzky and Messier wearing the diagonal name jersey without the lace-up collar. I’ve only seen a few others. They went to the lace-up collar after his first season in the Big Apple.
Black and silver, Jim. They went to gray on the Burger King jerseys. ;o)
The first photo has Gretzky wearing #20. He only wore #20 for that photo because they didn’t have a #99 jerseys ready for the photoshoot. He never wore #20 in the WHA (or anywhere else, for that matter).
Lastly,

Nope. Looks like East Podunk High, especially to those of us who were around for the days when only top line programs had the wherewithall to afford the luxury of white pants.
(Actually, and I’m sure this is part of the trend toward dark pants, the new turfs made from tires get hundreds of little black pills–or even more bits of fake green grass–all over them, and the damn things don’t come out in the laundry. Gotta pick those suckers off by hand. I know, I play softball on a turf like that all winter long under a local high school’s air-supported-dome football field. So I can understand that white pants might remain a pain, just in a different way.)
I realize things change, but the dark pants do still take some getting used to. I just keep thinking of SO many horrible small-town high school programs that dressed like that.
QUESTION: Thinking of renting SCHOOL TIES with Brandon Fraser cuz of the old school football unis. Is the movie any good?

But, after a corner kick just after 45 minutes, he was knocked down, so the camera stayed with him for a bit. If you follow the shot, he turns, and it’s clear that he’s got 7 on the front and 17 on the back. Does not appear that a 1 fell off.
Very odd.

I’m pretty sure that’s not Nolan Ryan. It looks like Terry Puhl (who was a lefty). It also looks like a 2-something on the bill of his helmet; Terry was #21. Review here: http://images.google...

I think Paul was talking about reflective paint finsih and the silver/gray facemasks. Both changes from last year’s helmet.

reasons why uniwatch is a daily watch: nebraska football, philly unis, 99 as a racer, mistaking sun glasses fro a tube, a terry puhl reference.

Notice the pic of Gretz and Mess in NYR sweaters - holy spacing issues!!

I would be willing to be that they never add the “Lobo” logo at a future date, since they’re the wolfpack - U of New Mexico uses the Lobo nickname. But in all seriousness, I agree. I think they’re going to add the helmet decals at a later date. But the shells are slightly different with the metallic flake paint instead of the flat navy blue.

Speaking of WHA, I’m pretty sure the Chicago Cougars jerseys had the three-stripe pattern on the shoulder yoke, too. Either that or there were no stripes on the yoke at all. But the single-stripe version shown in the Ticker is not real. That much I DO know.
Something else to dig for in files, I guess.

1. Kasper and Brenly still talk too damn much. There’s a game going on, you yutzes.
2. Yes, seen lots of pictures of Wayne Gretzky as a Racer. You can find lots of Racers stuff here and here’s a video clip of his first pro goal (as a Racer).
3. Don’t know why neither the US men nor the US women have their federation crest in its normal position on the chest, but I am trying to find out through USSF contacts.

Good to see that site. I sometimes think folks like to pretend that part of Gretsky’s career never happened.
A little like conveniently forgetting how much fun Steve Young and Jim Kelly (esp. Kelly) were to watch in the USFL.

Joey Porter was wearing those same Steelers pants in the SI preview issue a couple of years ago. I think they are just a practice set.

As mentioned, last night’s episode of Project Runway challenged the designers is to create an opening ceremonies outfit for the ladies of U.S. Olympic delegation.
Here’s the slide show. Some of these work, some are all-sorts-of-wrong, but at least there are no desginer logos creeping about…

In addition to the discussion of the U.S. soccer uniforms lacking the USA crest, the women’s gymnastics team had podium training last night and didn’t even wear red, white, and blue. They wore hot pink with a teeny tiny American flag on the right forearm. Perhaps these aren’t the true uniforms and just the training uniforms, but I was appalled that they couldn’t even get the colors right, let alone crest.
The men, however, had just red and white (no blue) but had USA on the uniforms. And they’re still wearing footie pajama uniforms that make me giggle every time I see them.

Once again, these might not be game-day uniforms and just practice jerseys.

Re: Otis Shepard’s Cubs scorecard:
“Blue Valley Butter Is Good Butter”…Why is it that advertsing like that–clear, blatant advertising–looks so good and feels so right, and yet I cringe when a see today’s corporate sponsorship or clothing line symbols all over the place? Is it nostalgia? Or is it the pervasiveness of today’s advertising? Is it style? I’m conused.

“Good article here about Michigan’s transition from Nike to Adidas (with thanks to Greg DiLeo)”
Paul,
What will happen with Michigan’s hockey program? adidas doesn’t own a hockey equipment/apparel company as far as I know, nor do they make jerseys, socks, or pants. A quick look through Michigan’s photo galleries shows that they were outfitted fully with Nike/Bauer, so we know they don’t have an independent contract.
Thanks!

The Hall opened in early 2004. Before that, it was just a few displays/exhibits about particular athletes who had graced the track over the years (I think; I haven’t been there since winter track season of 2003). The track itself is at least 70 years old.

It seems there is always one Yankee uniform that is missing the armband for Bobby Murcer. Last night, Wilson Betemit’s jersey was without the armband:

I swear, we’ve become so accustomed to being bombarded with selling propositions—oblique or direct—that we’ve come to think everything in life must be at that pace. We’re like #5 in SHORT CIRCUIT: “INNNNNput!”
I watch guys take cellphone calls during softball games and think, “Y’know, there really was a time when if no one could contact you for 90 minutes or so the world wouldn’t come to an end.”
Then again, I also knew I guy who used say things like, “Ty Cobb managed to 4,000 frickin’ hits without having frickin’ stripes on his frickin’ shoes!”

Not sure if anyone linked this yet, but the column the day before was in the ticker. It’s the top 10 “worst” c.f. logos.

Someone on SI.com is asking for uni-help. They are trying to identify if a particular Seattle Mariners cap was used. It’s autographed by Ken Griffey, Jr. and obtained in a 1998 raffle, so we know the when. I don’t think it was a game cap, so might have it been a BP cap, or just a random souvenir stand item?

Adidas does own Reebok. I don’t think it would be a big deal to slap the 3 stripes on a hockey sweater made by RBK.

Tom Shieber -
The Cincinnati Reds have only 8 retired numbers. Joe Nuxhall’s 41 was ceremoniously retired at the beginning of the season. Jeremy Affeldt is wearing 41 this season.

The Wisconsin Badgers wear adidas sweaters.

I was looking through some of Wisconsin’s photos, and it looks like they wear adidas sweaters and socks, yes, but they have a Nike/Bauer equipment license (instead of Rbk), and either a Nike/Bauer or Easton stick license. Will Michigan go the same way?
Thanks all!

Nuxy’s 41 is being “honored” by the Reds but not officially retired. I guess that means the jersey in the outfield is coming down after the season.
You can call it 9 retired numbers though because 14 is unofficially retired for Pete.

Michigan looks as good in Adidas as Brett Farve in a Jets jersey, it just doesnt look right. At least the swoosh on the neck was more subtle than that hideous 3 stripe logo.
