Hey, it’s August 3, which of course means … football? Already? These two yahoos play for Alabama (Nick Fanuzzi on the left and John Parker Wilson on the right), and they’re preparing for the booster club payoff a grueling SEC schedule. Whoever numbered those practice jerseys should probably prepare for a new job. Seems to be a bit of a gap between the digits. The spacing template is probably dead-on for numbers other than 1, but there’s a bit of a problem here. Also Saturday: this. He’s like a laid-back cowboy from the future or something. The sad thing about the Saban picture is that there are few coaches in the SEC who spend half as much time primping their image. This means he put some real thought into that outfit and deamed it hip. Thankfully the tool is placed properly in the tool shed.

OK, you called them yahoos for what reason? You are mean spirited and really are not funny. Next weekend I would prefer if Paul put up a “gone fishin” sign and gave everyone the two days off.

I HATE EVERYONE! There, I got involved in the “bitch-fest!”
I for one think that Paul & Bryan et al. can post whatever they want on the site. It’s their site. And no one tells the movie critic to stop critiquing movies because it’s become a “bitch-fest.” If we truly wanted this blog to stop the negativity, then maybe we should attack those who make pathetic excuses for uniforms. Things like friggin’ uniforms that have more logos for nike than the team… Didn’t anyone watch Mighty Ducks 2? Charley didn’t want to play for the Hendrix logo, damn it! he’s a Duck! QUACK! QUACK! QUACK! And Hooray for UniWatch!

Let me get this straight … I point out that the space is far too big between the numbers, and then show a picture of Nick Saban in a ridiculous getup, and THAT’S an all-time low? Please. I’ve only begun to plumb the depths of Uni Watch’s all-time lows.
If you’re so terribly offended by an observation of poor spacing and funny-looking coaches, I think you might be in the wrong place. I won’t tell you to leave and not come back, but you might need to reconsider your reason for reading this site in the first place. It’s a pretty simple site — we talk about uniforms and things relating to uniforms. I’m sorry you can’t figure out how that relates to today’s post.

This just goes to help prove that Nike isn’t the only manufacturer coming up with these horrendous designs, and that it has more to do with what the schools want than what Nike is telling them to do. Shoot, these unis look like they’re a mix of the 2002 Miami uniforms and the current Maryland ones. Just simply bad. Looks like something that Under Armour would have come up with.

Problem is a lot of us come to the site to wade through the comments to find little nuggets of uni-information.
This junk just (including my post here, I suppose) just floods the comments with crap and makes it difficult to go through.
If you have an opinion on uniforms- yes, voice them. If you have an opinion on the site or an author of a post- maybe just email them directly?

Liking that shade of gold. Those shoulder things would be much better if they were a bit smaller and didn’t connect in the front. I imagine they also connect under the NOB which will probably look very busy.
BTW, did we ever determine whether GT is supposed to wear navy or black accent? They seem to go back and forth and I can’t tell what color the numbers are in that picture, althought the coach’s shirt appears to be navy.

Marc, grow up. Yes, duh, you have every right to voice your opinion. But just because you’re exercising that right, that doesn’t mean you’re doing so in a constructive fashion.
If you don’t like the weekend posts, don’t visit on the weekend. Same practical effect as if I put up a “gone fishin’” sign, and meanwhile those who DO like the weekend posts are able to do so.
The weekend posts are, for the most part, glorified captions that serve as placeholders so the site can stay open for those of you who want to chat. To bitch about these short posts is silly and pointless — save your complaints for the lengthier weekday posts.
Uni Watch is diferent things to diferent people. Some folks love the historical pieces, others hate them; some people love the logo/branding critiques, others hate them; some people love the long “Uni Watch Profiles” interviews, others hate them. I can’t please everyone and, frankly, wouldn’t want to try. Uni Watch is ultimately what *I* want it to be (including some historical pieces, some logo/branding critiques, some long interviews, etc.), and what I want it to be on weekends is Bryan’s work. Not your cuppa? No problem — enjoy an extra-long brunch, or read more of the Sunday paper, or call your mom (it’s been too long, hasn’t it?), or do SOMETHING other than griping about a free service that’s provided for your benefit, for shit’s sake….

To hopefully return to uniwatch talk, I am not fond of the new GT unis. I still appreciate that some schools understand understatement in uniforms (Texas, OU, PSU, USC etc). Seems to me the better or more historic the program, the more traditional the uni, much like in the pros.
#29 by Beardface on 08.03.08 12:56 pm |
IMHO, the balance lies in the middle. Penn State, Oklahoma, Texas, etc football looks are boring because they just look like t-shirts with numbers on them. They look like something you’d wear in a rec league. I dunno, the traditionalist in me be damned, but that look just bleeds cheap and a stubborn unwillingness to change.
Look at Virginia Tech, for example. In 1999-2003, they had a great uniform, but it was rather bland. I mean, there was a maroon jersey and white numbers on the front with orange numbers on the sleeves. Very boring, see for yourself: http://images.usatod...
Yeah, as you can see, they’re a little bland and nothing worth writing home about. Thats essentially what you have with those other uniforms like Okie, Texas, and Penn St.
Now, in 2004, they switched it up to add some piping. Pretty much the biggest complaint that i would have about them is the orange collar, but other than that, they look pretty sharp. I mean, when you see this, you know its VT, and thats definitely a goal you should have with the unis: http://images.athlon... Had they kept this design for a while, they would have been regarded as a classic in a new school way. Its not over the top, but its not bland, and it certainly doesn’t look traditional, but it works in its own way.
Now, this year they went and messed it all up and went to the horror side of Nike. http://www.beamerbal... There is not much good you can say about that. Its over the top, its different just to be different, and it screams ‘look at me, i’m unique!’ Its not good, and it just looks forced. This is the bad side of the new age.
Now, ironically enough, VT also is going to wear arguably one of their best unis of all time this year (and one which they should probably go full-time to if they were smart). http://www.beamerbal... Look at that, its perfection. Its traditional, but its not boring.

#38 by Matt E on 08.03.08 2:23 pm |
My main gripe with those Georgia Tech uni’s is the black line that connects the two gold slashes. I’m fine with the whole curvy, slashy look, as long as it stays clean. If they’d have just left the two gold parts on each shoulder and just tapered them off, I think it would even balance better with the thick gold collar.
As it is, the stupid black stripe is cutting the jersey in half right above the number, it looks like they’re wearing… capes draping off of their shoulders or something.
#39 by Matt E on 08.03.08 2:26 pm |
Sidenote: #15 seems to be reaching for #81’s golden package in that pic. 81 seems pleasantly accepting of the matter.

I’ve been reading here a long time, but have never posted, because most of y’all are a lot more astute than I when it comes to matters of uniform trivia. However, I’ve noted in the past few days something that no one else seems to have touched on, so I figured I’d bring it up.
Several of the Pirates have been wearing their jerseys with the top buttons unbuttoned, and it’s blatant enough that Len Kasper and Bob Brenly have started talking about it on the WGN telecast, to the point of noting various other uniform rules, and wondering when someone’s going to get called for a violation.
It started, as far as I could tell, with Doug Mientkiewicz wearing two buttons and no velcro over the past two days, and it looked positively bush. Today, he seems to have done one button up, but it still doesn’t seem like he has any velcro on his vest.
I didn’t get any screencaps of his previous state of disarray, and this look is at least slightly better, but it seems, fortunately for us, and unfortunately for the Pirates, that the look has started spreading, as evidenced here by Ryan Doumit.
Gruesome.

I’m pretty sure Ben Sheets is pitching without an undershirt. At least I can’t see it if there is one.
I had the same thought, Jason. Seems highly unusual. Even on a hot day, I think I’d still prefer cotton against my skin to polyester. He took the loss, so perhaps he won’t be going with that look again.
I love the VaTech white-out uni. Although I think I’d love it even more if the UCLA stripe were repeated on the cuff.
Beardface, I hear what you’re saying about the blandness of Penn State, Texas, Oklahoma, but I disagree about the motivation. I’ve always liked how the (nearly) perennially successful teams stuck with the look associated with their greatest success: The Yankees, the Canadiens, the Packers. So I’ll concede that Penn State is bland (how could I not, right?) but that’s their look, and they’ve won national championships with it.
#57 by Beardface on 08.03.08 5:42 pm |
I hear ya on that, but I dunno. Just seems like they’re sticking with tradition just for the sake of doing so. I mean, Miami has a handful of titles, and they switch all the time. They don’t need to, but they do. In fact, heck, back in 1998, they practically started the whole ‘collar a different color and piping on the jersey’ fad that is so prevalent nowadays. Why do they do it? Because they want to and because they are able to create the type of look they want for the type of team they field. granted, the uniforms should have stuck with their 2002 version, but who am I to complain, their colors are green and orange, they’re gonna look ugly no matter what they do.
But, IMHO, those 3 schools we keep going back to would do well to mix things up a bit with the unis. Now I’m not saying throw piping all over the place and blotches of alternate colors around, but perhaps a stripe down the pants or a stripe on the sleeve wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Just something to differentiate itself from a run of the mill t-shirt with tape look.
There’s traditional, there’s classic, and then there’s bland. Florida State is traditional, Iowa is traditional, Ohio State is classic… Penn State, Texas, and Oklahoma are bland.

Fair point. It’s almost as if their tradition is to change the uniform every few years.

Ha! Yeah, the decision to play up the green instead of just having it as an accent wasn’t the best.
They haven’t always been this way: Walter Iooss’ book “Gladiators” shows the ‘Canes in ‘73 with a logo-less, forest green helment and matching jersey with white pants. And in the George Mira Era of the early ’60s they basically had Packers colors:

Watching the Colts/Skins tonight and I’m worried already about the upcoming season.
We all know that sleeves have all but disappeared on in football, especially on linemen, but I think the next step has been taken by Washington.
The defensive lineman look like they’re wearing cutoff T-shirts. You can really get a sense of it on Jason Taylor who is on the sideline, sans pads.
I’ll try to get screenshots.

yeah…i saw jt…but i think his sleeves are rolled up…he’s not wearing pads, like you said…the OL & DL shirts are definitely as small as you can get, barely covering the pads, and plenty of armpit hole action…*sigh*
however, we’ve seen sleeves this “short” before, and i don’t think they can actually get any shorter (due to pads), but the cut of both teams is definitely tighter and higher (some guys pads are now sticking out underneath their shirts) and the armpit holes are easily as big as ever…hopefully this won’t carry over to the real season, but im afraid it will
on another note…how refreshing is it to see a helmet with only ONE number on the back?
#82 by Joe D on 08.03.08 8:36 pm |
I thought the point of the obscenely bright neon green sticker was so it’s easy to pick out the one allowed player with a radio. Now seeing the NFL/lightning bolt logo in action in tonight’s game, I think it takes away from the brightness making it a little less obvious.

Interesting that they are scheduled to wear their white jerseys for the pre-seasons game in Dallas. Surely this is a mistake, unless the Cowboys are wearing their throwbacks, as they did in the regular season game against the Packers last year.
