Here’s what the new Timberwolves uniforms will apparently look like. Pretty plain, no? Plus I’m so sick of this trend of capitalizing the first and last letters — pfeh. New designs for the Kings and Magic, too. Those pics are from the NBA’s rookie photo shoot, where the uniforms were supposed to be super-secret, but they’ve leaked out here, among other places.
Still no word on what the Sonics-no-more will be wearing, although I hear word may come down on that tomorrow. Which is why my ESPN column featuring dozens of reader-submitted designs is running today — here’s the link.

Quickie Raffle: Heads up, people: Our friends at Distant Replays have given me a $200 gift card to raffle off, but the drawing is tomorrow. To enter, send a blank e-mail with your name in the subject line to uniraffle at earthlink dot net by 10pm eastern tomorrow. One entry per person, plus membership program enrollees will automatically get three bonus entries added into the pot.
Even if you don’t win the raffle, Distant Replays’ current sale — buy a jersey, get a free cap — is a good deal. Please patronize them, and Uni Watch’s other sponsors, when shopping for sports-related merch. Thanks.
Uni Watch News Ticker: This thing with the Browns wearing shorts over their pants has developed into a full-blown trend. Vince, I know you’re reading this — get us the scoop (with thanks to Shaun Ploenzke and David Sterling for the pics). … Most of you have probably seen this already, but just in case: Bayern Munich’s recent uni-unveiling fashion show has to be seen to be disbelieved. … Yup, those Padres camouflage jerseys sure do honor America (Roger Faso took that photo last week at a shop in San Diego). … Glenn Cook was at Tuesday’s USA/Mexico game at the World Junior AAA Baseball Championships and took a bunch of interesting photos. “Several of the Mexican players and coaches were wearing pins in their caps,” he writes. “Some were of the tournament logo (compare to this), while others sort of had this generic baseball with a gold border. The most out-of-place pin had to be on the first base coach, who was wearing a Royal Canadian Mounted Police pin. Also: The American uniforms had a USA Baseball 30th-anniversary patch I hadn’t seen before. I didn’t recognize the manufacturer’s logo on the Mexican uniforms. And speaking of logo creep, get a load of the Under Armour logos on the American pitcher’s socks. think they may be visible from space.” … The Steelers will be wearing throwbacks again this year. … Vikings, too. … From now on, whenever someone asks me where to eat near Shea Stadium, I’m just gonna give them this link. … Paul Bielwicz is in the process of creating “an Okkonnen-esque database of everything relating to the uniform and graphical history of the Rochester Red Wings.” If you have any old yearbooks, programs, or anything else that might be of assistance, please contact him here. … As you may have seen, Page 2 is doing a “What was the best sports year ever?” series. For those who care about such things, my contribution is here. … New Kentucky football uni on display here and here. Note the unusual placement of the seams and panels on the shoulder. … And although I think we’ve all seen the new Cal uniforms by now, here’s a photo I hadn’t seen before (until Brandon Pratt sent it my way). … Rob Ullman has been doing lots of pin-up portraits commissioned by Uni Watch readers, including these beauties for Ben Danner, Jay Rupert, Jason Thomson, and Robb Zurek (”He was afraid you might not approve of the purple,” says Rob). As always, you can see more on Rob’s work on his blog. … Now here’s something you don’t see every day (great find by Jim Pericotti). … The (only) great thing about Pudge going to the Bronx is that the Yankees now have two guys named Rodriguez and I didn’t get a single e-mail asking if they’d be adding first initials to their NOBs. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Nike-sponsored swimmers will be allowed to wear Speedo suits at the Olympics. And yes, I’d be the first to agree that this is a classy move by Nike.

Aren’t all the letters on the new Minnesota uniform capitalized? It’s just that the first and last letters are larger than the others.
I do agree that it is a weak look, though, and the rest of the uni is uninspiring as well. Blecch.

What bothers me most about the T-Wolves jersey is the semi-evergreen pattern around the neck. I always thought the trees were a nice unique addition. Now its kind of there, kind of not. Sloppy.

Whew! I was holding my breath in fearful anticipation. But, they’re not as bad as I feared. The shoulder panels kinda scare me a bit. It doesn’t look all that good, but, I’d rather it be a K.

I like the simplicity of the T-wolves uni, but that collar is really weird. Looks like it tucks under the front then has a random triangle thingy on it. Could have done better there. Let’s face it, this could have been ALOT worse. It is bordering on my extreme hatred for teal though.
P.S Could we fit anymore graphic/lettering on the damn ball?

Not at all uni-related … well … maybe slightly … Brett Favre wants to play football and (allegedly) the Packers want to pay him $2 a year for 10 years to just go away? Packer management looks real silly on this and Brett will end up wearing a Vikings uniform. But, after seeing how the cold affected Brett in the NFC Championship game, he should probably wear a Tampa Bay uniform this year.

Back when Pudge and A-Rod were on the Rangers at the same time, they didn’t have first initials on their NOBs, either. I remember reading a quote from the equipment manager, basically saying that if fans need an “I” or an “A” before their name to figure out who they are, they’re really dumb.

Favre lost me when I heard an interview where he talked about having to return as a backup (or something to that effect) and then asked, “How will that effect my legacy?”
Okay, just the fact he has considered—and is being dumb enough to let us know he’s concerned about—”my legacy” suggests he’s boarded the Self-Absorbed Celebrity Athlete Train after all.
I’d expect that kind of phrasing from T.O. and a few others. Not from Bret Favre.
And now it’s beginning to look like perhaps this all may be s little drama to extract a few more bucks from the Packers. I mean, what with gas prices being so high and all, a guy’s gotta make ends meet.
I have nothing but the utmost respective for the guy as a football player and for the way he played the game. But here, at the end of it all, he is displaying the lack of important factor for any true legend…class.
“You got to know when to fold’ em…
Know when to walk away.”
So, let’s take a poll:
What team’s jersey WILL Favre end up wearing this season?

When I worked in retail, the different color solid Yanks caps were in style. People were buying them as a fashion statement. They had no allegiance to the Yanks as a fan. They wanted a hat that would go with their shoes or whatever. I would have kids literally take shoes out of their boxes and ask for a hat that went with them. They could care less who the team was and in many instances I don’t think they even knew who it was.
To me, critiquing these fashion caps would be like if we complained about latest line of Ralph Lauren polo shirts or Coach handbags.

An argument can be made that Chief Wahoo is no more racist than the little Italian guy who brings Lady and the Tramp their spaghetti dinner. But, that argument simply points out how dated Wahoo is. I love Wahoo because it’s been part of baseball since my childhood. But I love the Little Rascals and still watch them from time to time (with Buckwheat and Stymie and all), but that doesn’t mean anyone should still be making movies like that today.
Some things, because they belong to another time, and no matter how much some may hate to see it happen, should be left behind…in that other time.

Unlike many here, I don’t have any objections to purple. However the Straight Grape hats are some of the ugliest things I have ever witnessed. In fact I may never recover.
Interesting side note, though…The Straight Grape style is not available from the Colorado Rockies, the MLB team that wears purple. (Not that it would make it anywhere close to right.)

Please don’t put words in my mouth. Didn’t say that. Wouldn’t say that.
But such things ARE quite often key elements of the gang-banger culture.
And that’s a fact.
Just saying, such hats are aimed at a certain market segment. Their appeal decidedly is not “across the board.” No one at MLB ever said, “Damn, the guys at the VFW hall are gonna LOVE these.”

the whole gang banger thing is funny. i work at a high school where some sport wear is not allowed on campus, especially hats (no hats). the only exception to the hat rule is that its ok to wear the school baseball team hat, which just switched to the cincinnati reds hat. funny because the local gang is a norteno gang affiliated with red, who at one point were wearing Nebraska jerseys, hats, shirts, etc. We are in CA and i know those kids could care less about cornhusker football. so now Nebraska apparel is banned on campus because 1) its red and 2) the N stands for Norte. my brother couldnt wear his red wings jersey because of the color and the number (14,shanahan) back in the day, since the 14 stands for norte as well.

First, I’m still trying to figure out how one disrespects a logo (”hey Chief Wahoo, ya mama so fat…)! Seriously though, I get what you’re saying in that a team’s primary brand identifier might be used in a way that is unappealing.
Secondly, what is the problem with have two primary markets to sell to? For example, you have the hardcore fans (most of us in UW) that root for our team (most times, it’s hometown) and we either want the game hat or a replica of game hat or at the least, a conservative-styled fashion cap IN TEAM COLORS ONLY.
Then, you have the fashionable circuit that’s more trendy and wish to coordinate colors and wear more flamboyant styles.
I fall in the first category. I don’t care for the second category but I don’t have anything against it and people that sport it. it’s just not ME. I’m not going to knock New Era/MLB’s hustle for selling to both groups. Sometimes I feel there’s an anti-capitalist vibe in here. Shouldn’t New Era/MLB be allowed to make money? There is obviously a market for this alternative gear. It’s supply and demand and individual choice. Smuckers makes a ton of flavors of jelly but I tend to buy only grape and mixed fruit. I hate apricot and peach and would never buy them. However, other people buy them so I don’t think Smuckers is wrong for trying to make more money by maximizing the amount of flavors they sell.
I realize I’m most likely in the minority here, but I welcome any comments/feedback in this discussion.
and a postscript on gang activity. I have a good friend who is in law enforcement and is somewhat of a gang expert. He has told me before that although sports gear is still prevalent in the culture, they focus more graffiti and tattoos. I just bring this up because I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth (mea culpa Ricko) but I doubt anyone in New Era’s design team is thinking “what kind of hat can we make that MS-13 or the Crips will dig?”. Gang members may or may not embrace a style of dress but there is a double standard here. Armani is never accused of marketing to Mafia bosses. That would be crazy because many, many people enjoy their fine suits for all walks of life, but legitimate and corrupt

im simply stating i PERSONALLY think it’s 100% WRONG to sell/make/market team gear, especially caps, in anything BUT official team colors
if you’re so hip and trendy that you need a cap to match your kicks (which i do NOT have any problem with whatsoever), can’t you possibly find one that doesn’t bear the logo of a MLB (or other sport) club? i mean…does the only grape sucker cap LIDS sells have the marlins logo? what…no?
i prolly own 100+ hats/caps…each one is a different color (or colors)…and i try to coordinate one with a golf/tennis/athletic outfit (rarely do i wear any lid otherwise)…whether it be matching the pants, shorts, sneakers, shoes, whatever…but i would NEVER consider buying a ‘fashion’ MLB cap because of the color (unless it’s the team’s official color)…to do so, to me, IMHO, is WRONG
i know others feel differently…that is their right, just as it is my right not to like, buy or acknowledge any official MLB merchandise that goes against the official team color scheme

Don’t know if you guys have seen it in NCAA 09, but the Tennessee football team is apparently bringing back orange pants with white stripes for the first time since the early 90’s. This is supposedly the new adidas template sent to EA for the game:
http://3rdsaturdayin...
Here’s a late 80’s/early 90’s shot:
http://cache.viewima...
Some of you may recall Tennessee wearing solid orange pants in last year’s SEC Championship Game, which was the first appearance of orange pants since a 1999 game against Memphis:
http://cache.daylife...
Also, if that adidas template is accurate, the nameplate text on the white jersey has changed from black to orange and the TV numbers have moved from the shoulder to the sleeve. There’s been no official word on how often the new pants will be worn or if they’ll be paired with the orange or white jersey.

The fashion cap debate has always been interesting to me, and my views on it have changed several times over the last few years (I’m currently 20). As I’ve mentioned on here before, I wear a sports cap every day, being either a New York Yankees cap or a New England Patriots cap. As far as Yankee caps go, I’ve always preferred the regular on-field cap, and have about of them, with different cap patches. I was never into the really extreme fashion caps, but I’ll admit I do own a few that I wish I hadn’t bought. Over time though, I’ve become much more discerning in what caps I buy and wear. Right now, for example, I mainly wear either the Yankees on-field with ‘08 All Star Patch, the Yankees 3930, the Yankees VA Tech 5950, or the Yankees Stars and Stripes 5950. Now, I’m sure to some people that some of those caps are ugly, but I like them. As for Patriots caps, I mainly wear either NFL Sideline caps or Sideline Superbowl or AFC Champions caps. I will admit though, I do occasionally wear a red, white, and blue camo cap that a friend from Boston bought me. As for making fun a fashion caps, well I don’t really think they disrespect the logo since they’re not on-field caps. That’s of course just my opinion. But, when I see something as stupid as this:
http://shop.mlb.com/...
I think they’re moronic as all hell, and anyone who buys one is a tool, no matter what logo they buy.

However, this is a conversation I can easily envision taking place.

NEW ERA: “Yes, but you’ll make TONS of money.”
MLB: “Oh, well, okay then.”

A general point on the “fashion” cap issue:
I think it’s perfectly reasonable to critique and even police (e.g. fining players who wear their pants PJ-style) how professional athletes wear their uniforms. They are, after all, being paid to do so. But to expect any collective good sense on the part of consumers is self-defeating. The goofus who shells out $31.99 for a pink Yankees cap has no obligation whatsoever to sport the logo with dignity. If you are personally offended by the selection of ridiculous shit at lids.com, take it up with the licensing department at MLB. Or just point and laugh like I do.

Manny is going to wear #28 for the Dodgers.
I work at a Dick’s Sporting Goods, and I must say that prior to my employment i was never bothered by a logo creep, however, working in the Team Sports section has opened my eyes. I was called over to the baseball apparel section the other day and asked “don’t you have any baseball socks that are just plain… like with no logo’s on ‘em?”. My thoughts immediately shifted to this blog and the recent discussion of the Phiten/Nike branded socks showing up in MLB. I stared at the floor in shame and a sinking feeling grew in my stomach as I realized that Dick’s Sporting Goods (one of the largest sporting goods chain in the US), in fact, did NOT have any baseball socks (Under Armour, ADIDAS, Nike) that did not display a visible logo when worn. Maybe the logo creep is to blame for the long pajama pants… everyone is just tryin to cover em up?
Sigh… at least we don’t sell the Phiten socks… yet.

Why can’t they make a uni that has all lower case letters. For instance, Helvetica in all lower case is nice and simple.
