The Ricko Files, Vol. 4

cabinet_256.jpg

Ricko stepped it up a notch last week. In addition to sending me his usual assortment of archival clippings, he also shipped me a package, which contained a gorgeous pair of pinstriped flannel pants (he says they don’t fit him, but they fit me just right) and some killer striped hose (including, as you can see at in the upper-right corner, a rogue pair just to fuck with me). Never seen vertically striped stirrups before — that’s gonna look pretty swank on the softball field.

It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the four pairs of stirrups in the bottom row are all youth sizes. They’re way too small for me, but if you’ve got a kid and want him or her to be able to dress like a proper ballplayer, I’ll happily give away these four pairs to the first four parents who ask. Just drop me a line with your name and address, and specify your order of preference for the four designs shown. Update: All stirrups now spoken for, so no more applicants, please.

Now then, here’s our weekly dose of Ricko’s archival selections:

• Here are two unusual shots of Hank Aaron: one where he’s wearing No. 52, and one as a minor leaguer.

• Can never have too many pics of those vertically striped Broncos socks.

• We all know the Angels wore those halo-topped caps from 1961 through 1970. But Ricko says there were some exceptions along the way: “I went to a Twins/Angels game at Met Stadium in 1961 (the first season of both teams), and the Angels didn’t have a halo on their hats. I’m pretty sure of that, because I also watched the Twins play them later on TV and thought to myself, ‘Hey, they have a HALO on their hats now!’ Finding photos of halo-less hats hasn’t been easy, but I finally found one. Then I found this one (aside from Rocky Bridges’s hat, note the absence of a halo on the Angels player in the background).”

• Speaking of the Angels, I love those two-tone stirrups from the late ’60s (shown in color on Steve Dewing’s site). And look how narrow their waistband was in 1973.

• Two Cubs items here: First, Ernie Banks with a logo patch on his cap. “That kinda thing shows up often in the ’50s,” says Ricko. “I think maybe they were spring training hats. Probably was cheaper than embroidery.” And the team’s 1957 stirrups appear to have had at least nine stripes (which is too many even for me).

• Awesome set of 1971 MLB posters here.

• We’ve talked before about the Reds wearing white mesh-backed caps. What I didn’t realize until now is that they also had white batting helmets.

• Interesting stripe on the mound at Sportsman’s Park during the 1946 World Series. Anyone know if this was standard practice at that ballpark?

• Another good shot here of Willie Stargell doing the white-tape shoe thing.

That’s enough for now. More soon. My continued thanks to Ricko for sharing his amazing archive and expertise with us.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Here’s something we all missed: George Sherrill’s Jim McKay memorial armband was on his left sleeve for the All-Star Game, even though the O’s have been wearing it on their right sleeve (good catch by Stephen King). … Why would Sean Jones wear shorts over his game pants? Jeffrey Moulden, who took the photo, says everyone else was just wearing their game pants. … Yesterday’s entry about the logo-emblazoned green dots led Joe Hilseberg to show me this hilarious video clip, which pretty well sums up the corporate design philosophy these days, in sports and otherwise. … Yesterday I linked to some anti-Mets T-shirts from Philly, which reminded Rob Ullman of this design, which he says he saw at the Small Press Expo during the ’06 NLCS. … FNOB alert: Antonio Freeman. That jersey is from the 2004 preseason, when the Dolphins also had Arturo Freeman on the roster (with thanks to Eric Stangel, who also pointed me toward an interesting piece of Lakers memorabilia). … Daniel O’Connor notes that Chad Johnson showed up at Bengals camp wearing a Sporting Club du Portugal (Sporting) kit. … Glenn Cook is covering the World Junior AAA Baseball Championships, which are being held in Edmonton and St. Albert, and took a really interesting photo of this Korean catcher’s helmet. “I didn’t know better, I’d almost think it was a modified bicycle helmet,” he writes. Also: Unfortunate logo creep on the Korean team’s socks. … Interesting historical tidbit from Ronnie Poore, who writes: “Did you know that in 1956 the famous clown Emmett Kelley left the circus to be the Brooklyn Dodgers mascot? Details here.” … Latest “worst uni ever” contenders: the Tampa Storm (with thanks to B.J. Foster). … Whoa, just when you thought you’d seen every stunt ever pulled by the 1976 White Sox, John Chadd comes along with this. The sombreros weren’t worn during the actual game, obviously, but still. Anyone know more about this? … Guess what game I won’t be attending. … No more sports bras for Oregon State, who jerseys will look like this. … Someone has started a petition to get the Steelers go go back to block uni numbers (with thanks to Hans Krake). … Good coverage of the new UMich football jerseys here (courtesy of Ryder Kouba). … Chad Pennington has apparently changed from this facemask to this one.

Actually that’s an FC Porto shirt Chad’s wearing.

Not for sure but the Circle Around the mound at sportsman’s park was a big enough feature that pre-construction renderings of Busch III (the current stadium) featured the same design around the mound. It wasn’t until the infield sod was laid down that anyone knew that the halo/circle around the mound would not be in the new park.

Chad Pennington has apparently changed from this facemask to this one.

and apparently, it will soon be this one

Fregosi card:
That’s a 1962 Topps card. High series ‘62 cards came out in the late summer of 1962, not ‘61.

I would bet it was still a picture from 1961 though…

The ‘91-’92 Tampa Bay Storm uniforms were SO bad, that they’re actually GREAT! I’m still waiting for them to do a throwback night. I also liked their ‘93-’94 unis (looking for pic) which looked like the San Diego Chargers in black, blue, and silver.

Guess what game I won’t be attending. …

Paul, why do you hate the Big Brothers/Big Sisters? (teasing!)

Sounds like a spot for a Uni Watch field trip: http://www.nytimes.c...

The stripe around the mound at Sportsman’s Park, from my understanding, was a strip of dirt that was apparently like that for at least a few years of the ballpark’s existence. Of course, I can’t find any pictures or further documentation at this moment, but I have heard of this before. In fact, there was talk of doing this at the new Busch Stadium when it opened, but that obviously didn’t happen. I wouldn’t have minded at all if they had done this … very unique, with a nod to the past.

If memory serves me correctly, didn’t damn near every Arena Football team in 1991 wear the Zubaz uniforms shown in that Tampa (Bay) Storm picture? The only exception I remember was the Detroit Drive. Looking for pics….

Funny you mention the logo patch on Ernie Banks’s cap. Am I seeing things, or does Nolan Ryan’s cap in the photo on The Sporting News also have a patch?

FYI, from left to right, the bottom row colors are:
Black, Royal, Black w/orange and Brown w/orange-white.

Gotcha. I look forward to checking out the 61 pic when it gets fixed then…

Zubaz need to stay in the 90s where it belongs

Looking for the following info:
1996 Atlanta Olympics basketball jerseys: Were the name/numbers sewn or printed? I believe the numbers were sewn and the name printed, but can’t remember for sure.
1996-97 Seattle Sonics NBA @50 throwback jersey: Were the name/numbers sewn or printed? I’m also looking for pics of the players wearing the jersey, specificaly Shawn Kemp.

I have maybe a dozen Arena games I taped from the first year of the league (’87). One of these days gotta dig them out. Best uni that first year, I think, was the Chicago Bruisers (black and blue, what else).

Remember later when Cliff Branch played for the LA Cobras?

Or the all-in-orange (well, white helmets) Miami Hooters with Mark Duper?

Gotta give that league credit. They’ve come a long way despite getting a lot of shit from a lot of people. A franchise now goes for $20 million.

Those Oregon State jerseys are a hundred times better than what they wore last year. Kudos to whoever made that call.

That link to the 1971 baseball posters brings back memories…yup, I got my O’s and my brother his Cards posters from Wheaties. That same year, I got another O’s one and a Reds poster from Sears, they came free when you bought a team sweatshirt. I still have the posters, packed away somewhere…sigh….

Those Oregon State jerseys are a hundred times better than what they wore last year. Kudos to whoever made that call.

I’m wondering if anyone else noticed they’re still made by Nike. “No more sports bras” is probably the closest thing to a compliment the folks from Beaverton can get on this blog!!!!

In the 1971 poster, the SF Giants player wearing #32 looks exactly like the Juan Marichal on the Uniwatch ringer tee. Except Juan wore #27

Much as it pains me to say it, the Raiders’ unis also look great in the pic featuring the Bronx’ striped sox.

Actually that’s an FC Porto shirt Chad’s wearing.

Nope, that’s definitely Sporting, who are based in Lisbon. They both have the same sponsor, Portugal Telecom, but Porto wear blue vertical stripes while Sporting have green hoops.

On one of those goofy ESPN shows about EA’s Madden series, he’s appeared on there wearing a Liverpool shirt, so I’m guessing that he’s a bit of a soccer fan.

Vote for OKC new team name…

well that didn’t work…new OKC here:

Raiders played home games at not-yet-fully-enclosed Candlestick Park in ‘60 and part of ‘61. Out beyond those fences, under the scoreboard, is SF Bay.

Pictures of Jim Fregosi and Nolan Ryan the same day? Paul, you’re killing us old Mets fans.

Thank goodness somebody is trying to get those stupid numbers off the Steelers uniforms.

Ever since Nike changed them to the “slash” numbers for Kordell Stewart the Steelers have looked like a bunch of fools.

Tampa Bay Storm, thank you very much.

Wow, I’ve heard Kordell blamed for all kinds of things but never the change of the numeric font! Are there any legs to that story or is it just opinion?

For those interested in Japanese baseball, here’s one of recently retired Masumi Kuwata (briefly with Pittsburgh, retired this preseason) played batting practice pitcher to slugger and former teammate from Yomiuri and high school Kazuhiro Kiyohara. Interestingly Kuwata wore his Pirates #18 uni against Kiyohara’s Orix Buffaloes.
http://jhockey.wordp...
And I also recently caught a few games of high school ball and one game in particular was a stirrup haven. Take a look at the last photo with the bases loaded and ball in play.

Paul, it’s Sporting Clube DE Portugal. Learn your portuguese man ;)

Maybe it’s because I don’t pay attention to baseball anymore, but in the pic of the mound ring, why are there three infielders on the first base side?

i don’t mind when paul bashes critiques the beaverton gang, but it gets annoying when the lemmings second that emotion without offering any rationale or reasoning behind their destain

while even nike affectionadoes prolly hated the sports bra look, i bet a few (you know who you are) will find these new uni’s “boring” (while the term ‘classic’ comes to my mind)

echoing the “kudos” thoughts, am i

Yeah, I really like them and my brother, an Oregon State fan, will no doubt like the change.

They’re sharp, I like the orange, just hoping it won’t have orange pants! Isn’t it refreshing to see a new uniform without wordmarks above the number on the front? Too many jerseys are cluttered these days.

Actually that’s an FC Porto shirt Chad’s wearing.

No, that’s definitely Sporting Clube de Portugal - AKA Sporting Lisbon. Don’t let the sponsor fool you. Note the horizontal hoops, not vertical stripes. Note green and white, not blue and white. Looks like an older kit made by Reebok, not the more recent made by Puma.

Puma 07/08:

Reebok 2005 (chest numbers instead of sponsor), but note the positioning of white Reebok logo on green stripe, instead of usual black logo on white.

Musial shift?

Teams sometime overload one side of the field when a notorious pull hitter is at the plate. The shortstop here is playing on the other side of second, while the 3rd baseman will play where the SS normally is.

The Steelers throwback jersey from last year is being sold as a “Third Jersey”. That, plus the fact they have worn the gold helmets in practice, makes me think they will be wearing the uniforms this year (and maybe future years?) for a couple games. Of course, this may be old news to all of you. But its news to me.

Also, note the jersey can have “any name any number” but its for “Current Players Only”. I’m not sure what that means. Does that mean “Bradshaw 12″ is not available or “anyname 12″? I guess they’re trying to protect their legacy, or something like that. Do all teams do this?

Ricko is a legend! This guy deserves the title of Original UniWatcher or something. It takes dedication (or obsession) to pay this much attention back in the day. For this, I say thanks.

Why would Sean Jones wear shorts over his game pants?

I went to training camp on Saturday, and other players had shorts over their playing pants. I’ll try to send pictures to Paul tonight.

First, this is good news. I loved that uni last year and am looking forward to seeing it again this year. I brought up photos of the Steelers practicing in yellow helmets a few times here but nothing was ever discovered on an official announcement. I would say this store offering is about as official as it gets. The 75th anniversary patch is gone too.

I think the “any name, any number” program works as such: you can get any name/number combination which is when you see people with their own name on the back of jersey. Although I find this corny, with the way guys switch teams anymore, it’s the safest bet (I still wouldn’t do it though).

Secondly, many people use the anyname/number option to purchase a player that is less popular and doesn’t have jerseys pre-made. Offensive linemen come to mind here.

I think what they are saying is, “if your any name/number choice is that of a player, it has to be a current player” so this would disqualify you from Bradshaw or any other retired/former Steeler.

However, a #12 with “SMITH” would be acceptible.

Why would Sean Jones wear shorts over his game pants?

I went to training camp on Saturday, and other players had shorts over their playing pants. I’ll try to send pictures to Paul tonight.

Could the players be using the game pants as spandex/compression shorts for support? Without thigh and knee pads, a pair of football pants would have a similar fit. It looks odd though but whatever works.

Could possibly be for that reason. One of the O-linemen i remember was catching hell from the o-line coach. It was pretty funny

Peter Wunsch: In the 1971 poster, the SF Giants player wearing #32 looks exactly like the Juan Marichal on the Uniwatch ringer tee. Except Juan wore #27

Right, very interesting! Especially since a few other recognisable players are shown with their correct numbers — even on the Giants poster we see the likeness of Bobby Bonds wearing his correct no. 25. Also correctly depicted is Tommie Agee (no. 20) on the Met poster.

Another number-switcheroo seems to have been done on the A’s poster. That “no. 8″ strongly resembles Reggie Jackson, who actually wore no. 9.

It is interesting that the only clearly-drawn individual on any poster appears to be Luis Aparicio on the White Sox poster. Unfortunately, he was no longer with the club in 1971.

First baseman, after long stretch. That artist used a lot of existing art for reference, and not sticking to same team. Two of the images in Giants poster are Mays. If memory serves (and it still does more times than not) the photo he used there was of Willie McCovey. I may even have it in my Giants file. Dunno.

Thanks for the props, everyone. Nice to know someone else appreciates the things I do. Glad those socks got claimed.

Also, I’m pretty sure I have cereal box back with those hockey posters, too. A single player on white background with large team logo. Those the ones you remember?

I meant McCovey for that Expo first baseman.

Speaking of Chad Pennington’s facemask change, how many NFL players are still wearing his former facemask style? Byron Leftwich is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, but that style used to be used by a number of QBs in the ’80s and early ’90s, Marino, Aikman, Esiason, Bledsoe, just to name a few. But it seems that it’s gone the way of the dodo, which totally doesn’t bother me.

Yup. Is Williams shift, that’s why photo was in the book accompanying story about ‘46 World Series.

Note in story says Red Sox got new unis for the series.

Cardinals had theirs dry-cleaned.

–Ricko

I never understood the FNOB or even the first initial. I mean, don’t the numbers distinguish them already? Isn’t that the point of numbers? And can’t you tell the two players apart, anyway? -Runoff

Pretty sure they do.

The licensing deal only covers current players, not retired ones. Some retired players also have a deal, so you can order jerseys with their name and number on them, but not as a rule.

Ricko - yes, the set from Wheaties. Even though I’m a New Yorker I had ordered the Western Division set of posters as a kid because I was a California Golden Seals fan and also liked the other Western Division teams.

I no longer have the posters but somewhere I do have so old pics of me in my room with those posters on the wall

Didn’t find an explanation for the ring around the mound at Sportsman’s Park, but did find a nice collection of photos of the ballpark inlcuding player shots. http://www.baseball-...

I think they are certainly worthy of their own monument. I used to be like Lucius Fox of the recent Batman movies here on UniWatch - I worked in the hockey wing, and was one of a few dedicated staff members. ;o)

However, I am nowhere near being close to the sultans of dress in Paul and Ricko.

Also, I’m pretty sure I have cereal box back with those hockey posters, too. A single player on white background with large team logo. Those the ones you remember?

–Ricko

Ricko - yes, the set from Wheaties. Even though I’m a New Yorker I had ordered the Western Division set of posters as a kid because I was a California Golden Seals fan and also liked the other Western Division teams.

I no longer have the posters but somewhere I do have so old pics of me in my room with those posters on the wall

I’ll look for that ceral box back that shows ‘em all. Was one of my favorite series cuz of the simple, uncluttered imagery, which afforded a great look at the unis.

Pretty sure it shows the all-gold Kings home unis, which I frickin’ loved cuz were so different from anything anyone else was wearing.

(Time for s meeting. Oh-be-still-my-heart.)

For what it’s worth, the “mound ring” at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis was NOT in evidence during the 1943 and 1944 World Series, according to the MLB films available on DVD, so perhaps it was a 1946-only feature.

I do know there was NO “ring” around the mound in the early 1960s, when I first went to games at the ballpark… when Anheuser-Busch bought the Cardinals and the ballpark (which had been owned by the Browns! in 1953, the Lords of Baseball wouldn’t let Gussie Busch rename the park “Budweiser Stadium”. Calling it Busch Stadium was just fine, though! Given today’s “naming rights,” that decision seems awfully dated!

I can’t believe I’m actually going to do this, but I must hand it to Nike for showing a rare bit of tact and understatedness in the new Oregon State jersey design. That being said, I’m sure there are plans in the works at Nike HQ to have the Oregon Ducks outfitted in green and gold diamond studded day-glow kevlar in the near future.

I wonder if Sean Jones ripped his game pants at the last minute before strolling out to practice. That’s a possibility. Maybe he did it on his way out in some embarassing area, then decided that taking off the spikes and pants would take more time and just threw on some loose shorts? I have no factual basis for that story, but it just seems like something I’d do (I’m incredibly lazy).

Ricko - what was so unique about the L.A. Kings back then is that they were the only team to wear home and road PANTS! Every other team retained the same color pants while only changing jerseys and socks, but the Kings had gold pants to go with the gold home jersey/socks, and purple pants (sorry, Paul) to go with the road purple jersey/socks! Waaaayyyyy cool….

Campus Squeeze has created a list of the ugliest college football uniforms. You will never guess who is #1. It is also nice to see their shared hatred for the color purple.

I’d say Teebz - he is the hockey maven on here. And Minna H - because you have to have Minna SOMEWHERE.

no love for redemske, ekdahl or grzegorek?

and my vote goes to jeremy brahm, who is absolutely the go-to guy when it comes to absloutely useless shit about japanese baseball uniforms ;)

When and why was the NY removed from the Mets logo?

We can just erect statues in various cities and countries across the world. That might be easier. :o)

However, I’m far from being the only hockey guy/gal on here now. I’d vote the big guys - Ek, Vinny, and Redemske - before I’d vote me in.

I think enough is enough with these best/worst lists because they’ve become trite and uncreative.

Has the person that wrote this just been lurking on UW and stole all the anti-purple/anti-oregon/anti-nike propaganda posted here?!?!

I love the comment too, reminding the person that yield signs are red!!!!

Weak and sophmoric.

I’d vote the big guys - Ek, Vinny, and Redemske - before I’d vote me in.

Redemske’s statue should have smeared eye black and be crying

If you don’t like reading his work, there is another option. ;o)

However, he has kept the weekends rolling, and has contributed to many of Paul’s stories as well. He probably does more than we know, but we never hear about it.

Give him a break, Kek. Complaining won’t get you anywhere, especially on the internet. ;o)

Does anyone know why the Steelers changed their number font in the first place? That has perhaps been the biggest NFL uni mystery to me.

Reason #1: They did it to match the number font on their helmet.
http://www.hellopitt...
But that doesn’t explain why the jersey font is slightly italicized.

Reason #2 (based on memory): The jersey supplier, which I believe was a new supplier, wanted to modernize the uniform. They did that by adding the logo to the chest and changing the number font.

I’d vote the big guys - Ek, Vinny, and Redemske - before I’d vote me in.

i think douggie was joking (i recognize his tongue in cheek anywhere)…

and i would certainly nominate TEEBZ for a somewhat smaller statue, on the side of mt. uniwatch…

“In 1997, the team switched to rounded numbers on the jersey to match the number font (Futura Condensed) on the helmets, and a Steelers logo was added to the left side of the jersey.”

I got that from the ever reliable source Wikipedia. If that is true, I don’t know why they didn’t switch the helmet font to match the jersey instead.

I got it… however, one cannot be certain without that vocal inflection, and I certainly cannot stand the people that pile on once a comment about BR is made.

No ill will here, Kek! It’s all cool on the hockey front! :oP

How about intead of people from uniwatch we nominate athletes who “get it”. This would be difficult because atheltes don’t pick the uni, but they can choose to wear it right.

That would have made more sense.

Especially since their new “matching” fonts don’t even match. Italic on the jersey, roman on the helmet.

Thanks bro, you know I actually wrote “(LI Phil, help a brother out!)” but then I deleted it before I clicked “Say It!”. Nice to know someone is on the same wavelength.

I only mentioned that eyeblack thing because that was one of the first Saturday explosions of Bryan’s work that I recall, that’s all. Truth be told, I agreed with Bryan on that point and really don’t see what the big deal is. The only time I recall getting annoyed with him is the Vai Sikahema thing.

Relax Teebz, your comment sounds almost exactly like Paul’s on Sunday night. Yes, he does stuff for Paul we don’t see, yes he contributes to the site, yes he keeps things going on the weekend. I didn’t make a complaint per se, but I think this “quit complaining” thing is ridiculous. If someone has an opinion they have every right to post it in a comment.

You’d be the mold on Abe Lincoln’s face :)

When and why was the NY removed from the Mets logo?

It was removed before the 1999 season.

According to this really interesting column of the time, the Mets did it because they finally got tired of the “NY” not matching their cap logo, and decided rather than substitute they didn’t really need it anyway.
