Coming off the DL to find half your teammates traded: check.
Wait, that was just C.C. Sabathia and Casey Blake. But man, with C.C. gone I bet it seems like there’s room in the clubhouse for an extra four or five guys. At least the September callups will have room to roam.
Conversely, I wonder if the postgame spread in Milwaukee had to be expanded? — Bryan

Am I the only one who wishes the Bucs had some sort of 3rd jersey with their practice number fonts?
Also, do any other teams wear practice jerseys with numbers so different from their game jerseys?

I bought a new 5950 yesterday, and had to rip off the hologram within about 2 minutes. So annoying up there in the very top of your vision.

Looks like the Vikings will be wearing throwbacks for at least one game again this year — note the gray facemasks….

Yeah — at least they’ll look good in one game this year.

Maybe Paul would like this version of the Mets’ black hats better… but since Albert Pujols won the game for the Cards with a two-run bomb in the 14th, maybe not… ;-)

I saw that last night, thought they looked like a little league team haha.
On a side note, I always thought that the Indians should have used their alternate cap for the Stars-and-Stripes cap, that way it looked like the colbert report logo. anyone else agree with me on that?
#8 by Evan on 07.27.08 11:14 am |
Does anyone know if there is truth to this, I was told that the “style” of keeping the stickers on the hat and not bending the brim began because people would buy hats, wear them once, then return them
#9 by Mike Engle on 07.27.08 11:20 am |
Don’t think that could happen anyway. NFL third jerseys, with the exception of throwbacks, have to have the same style as the primary colored or white jersey, with the difference being a color swap where a non-dominant team color becomes dominant.
For example, the Buccaneers could have an orange, pewter, or black jersey, but it would have to have the varsity font and the pirate ship patches like the others.
The reason for this is because there are only 16 regular season games. It’s a way of trying to preserve team identity while allowing for extra merchandise sales at the same time.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko, who usually wear red, decided on green and black for their CAF Confederations Cup campaign. Strange choice! Not quite as weird as when the Fabu chose to wear yellow in the 2004 CAF Confederations Cup finals but we all know how well that worked out for them don’t we?

I’m catching the Royals for the first time in their powder blue alts. I’m a little conflicted. The reincarnation, http://mlb.mlb.com/i... , looks OK, but I’m still a fan of the original, http://www.tristarpr... . But if they went back to the originals, the new baggy style would look just awful.

I don’t know if anyone’s seen this uniform before, but as I was searching for a picture of the Astros’ tequila sunrise uniforms, I came across this picture of Doug Rader from (supposedly) 1975. I’m a huge Astros fan and I’ve never seen these unis before. If anyone has any info that’s willing to share, I’d be interested to know.
Here’s another one of Cliff Johnson in the same uni.

Red sleeves, red hat, sansabelts…that picture is from 1972, 73, or 74.
Take this timeline.

The baseball pants people here sometimes refer to as “pajama bottoms” look really comfortable. I wish they made dress pants out of the same material. Can anyone confirm or deny that they are in fact as comfortable as they look?
#27 by David on 07.27.08 3:37 pm |
Well, those jerseys were theoretically from May 31, 1975 when the Astros dropped 12 in the 8th inning against the Phillies en route to a 15-3 victory. It’s totally possible they were still left around from 1974 because in that jersey timeline 1975 was the dawn (no pun intended) of the tequila sunrise jerseys.
#28 by u2-horn on 07.27.08 3:57 pm |
Can’t be. They played at Philadelphia on May 31, 1975. They were at the Mets on 5/31/74.
They were, however, at the Cubs on May 31, 1973. Doug Rader played 3rd and was 0-for-5
#29 by cah on 07.27.08 4:28 pm |
Rays are wearing batting practice shirts today. Maybe if they’d worn real unis, they’d have understood that the game actually started.
#30 by Teebz on 07.27.08 4:58 pm |
They’re comfortable, but I find myself pulling the legs upwards before running in order to have some movement in them. They’re like wearing any other sort of baseball pants except they don’t end at the ankle.
As for the look, they’re ok, but I still prefer the stirrups/high socks look.
#31 by Evan on 07.27.08 5:03 pm |

#32 by K Dawg on 07.27.08 6:35 pm |
At first I thought it was just the lighting and the belt was the right color red, but I think it is in fact brown. Seriously, Hamels, why?
Nice eyes, Kevin.
#33 by Ed Gaug on 07.27.08 6:35 pm |
I have a pair for the wooden bat league I was in and they are extremely comfortable. This being said, I go with those instead of the traditional look because I can’t find regular baseball pants in my size with enough give to run and slide without ripping them. The downfall of the pajama bottoms are that there is nothing keeping your socks up so I found myself pulling my socks up more often.

I don’t know whether that is an actual rule since the Jets are going on their second season in which they will wear their “Titan’s throwback” alts twice. These jerseys not only contain an entirely different color scheme but they also have a different numbering font. I know these are replicas but compare (the twos in particular) this with this.

#40 by Husul on 07.27.08 7:40 pm |
It looks VERY VERY XFL. The Bucs need wholesale uni-changes. The pewter is cool but the fonts and logo stuff seem way too amateur for the NFL.

But, I will add… I’ll bet they sell ALOT of practice jerseys, seeing that they are so different but still official team gear.

#45 by LI Phil on 07.27.08 8:06 pm |
i had to check the name box twice to see that it wasn’t marty who just said that…
to each his or her own of course, but methinks those numeral fonts are neither timeless nor classic…and therefore, should best be left to the practice field…tampa’s fonts are uniqueish enough…don’t start putting the numbers in that font too…just my $.02
#46 by Talon Lardner on 07.27.08 8:47 pm |
Nothing wrong with a little uniqueness, though problems do start when EVERYONE starts to be unique, resulting in everyone just looking the same, no jersey being more memorable than the next team’s.

When the ‘Stros went to the tequila sunrise uniforms, were the home and road unis identical? I thought that the road unis were a shade of cream or something along those lines to distinguish them from the home unis, but on the Dressed to the Nines website they both look white. Realizing that the website is not always correct, can anyone confirm/recall?
#49 by Ed Gaug on 07.27.08 9:44 pm |
I bought them online completely blind and they worked out well. They fit like regular cut jeans if I had to compare them to normal clothes. These are the ones I have: http://baseballsales... . #53 by Ricko on 07.27.08 10:18 pm |
Tequila sunrise unis were exactly the same home and road, despite what others will try to claim. Pants were white…home and road…always. Later they added the rainbow striped shoulder uni, which was originally a gray road only, and the home hats with rainbow body changed to Navy. When they adopted a home version of that uni is was a color called “Alamo cream” or something. Eventually those creams and gray became their only unis and the Rainbow guts were abandoned altogether.
Also—and this has been mentioned here before—for all or part of the first season of Rainbow Guts, shoes were black.
#54 by Ricko on 07.27.08 10:20 pm |
I assume it also has been noted those unis you first discussed were orange and not red.
#55 by Mike Engle on 07.27.08 10:56 pm |
Exactly. The Jets-as-Titans is a throwback uniform. Therefore, it does not have to match a home or road jersey. Teams are allowed to have a throwback set or a third set (not both) and may be worn once or twice in the regular season, in addition to once in the preseason.
For example, the Eagles’ black jersey is a third jersey. It is a color swap with the green jersey. The green jersey has white numbers with a black drop shadow, while the black jersey keeps the white numbers, but uses a green drop shadow. No special helmet, pants, or socks went with the black thirds. But last year, the Eagles had their Swedish pastel throwback sets, forcing the black thirds to go on hiatus.

A few comments back someone was complaining about Bryan’s work (the “Dukes of Hazard” comment, for those of you who saw it). I deleted the comment, because it was asinine, and then sent a note to the person who posted it, telling him to get a goddamn clue.
What a surprise to discover that this person was hiding behind (a) a phony name, and (b) a phony e-mail address. Pretty easy to criticize someone on those terms, isn’t it? Yo, “BW,” if you’re reading this, you’re not just clueless, but you’re a pussy-assed coward besides.
Most of you know this already, but for the few who don’t: Bryan helps me in dozens of ways you don’t even know, and I would simply shut the site down on weekends altogether if not for him.
Yes, much of his work isn’t on the level of mine. That’s why he’s the intern and I’m the main guy, and why I write on weekdays and he’s (mostly) relegated to weekends. But he helps keep the machine running. Quit complaining about him and be thankful for all the things he does.

About those Indians “harkbacks” (cuz they aren’t throwbacks).
Quite an interesting amalgam.
Plain white jerseys with Wahoo on left shoulder (’54).
Lettering style (’72) but red with white border like ‘58.
Pants like ‘45 home.
Plain navy socks like ‘45 and early ’70s.
Topped with a hat that’s sorta ‘41 (”C” was white in ‘41).

#66 by LI Phil on 07.27.08 11:40 pm |
ricko…
i am not sure how PL feels about the terminology, but i had a off-board discussion with another UWer a couple months ago, and we decided upon the following…
perhaps PL, if he’s reading, would like to clarify/comment/disagree…
a throwback is, as best as can be attempted, a ‘direct reproduction of a specific year’s uniform’ (i.e. the astro rainbows, which, although butchered, was an attempt, or the A’s 68’s from earlier this year, which were beautifully recreated)
a RETRO uni is what the phils or indians are sporting on the weekends…as you described (”harkback”)…borrowing various years elements in semi-hodgepodge fashion to create a feel of a past era, but not any specific one…
to sum then (in my terminology, but not official UWese)…a throwback is a direct recreation of a previous year(s) uni, while a retro is an old-time feel, but not a specific attempt to recreate any particular uni
what do you think?
#67 by Talon Lardner on 07.28.08 12:07 am |
Sounds good to me, as long as there isn’t any sort of negative connotation to a “hark-back”/retro jersey, since sometimes those can be pulled off far better than a jersey that is supposed to perfectly represent an old jersey.
#68 by Shane on 07.28.08 2:52 am |
Never heard that. I’m pretty sure it began in hip-hop videos during the throwback craze, as everyone had to have a matching hat w/their jersey. You’d see stickers on the top and bottom of the bill.
Some would also wear the hat crooked off to one side with the brim flat. I would think that a curved brim may get in the way of sight out of that eye.
#69 by Ricko on 07.28.08 7:08 am |
“Retro” works. For me, anyway. Although outside U-W it may mean the same thing as Throwback.
Meant nothing negative about “harkback,” was just making up a term I thought might explain the concept of looking back but not necessarilly replicating. Think the Indians and Phillies retros look great. That is, of course, unless they begin to overwear them. Then they just become some kind of “alternate.”
Not sure what color the Phillies Retro hats are, navy or royal. Hope they’re royal—and thought they were when first saw them—cuz would be true to their late ’40s colors.
