Uni Watch librarian Carrie Klein and I spent yesterday afternoon checking out this exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York, and my favorite item by far was the item shown above, described simply as a “McKinley/Hobart jacket, 1896.” Not quite a uniform, but definitely a close cousin. And as an enthusiastic bowler, I was amused to see this (sorry about the shitty image quality — camera phone and all).
This is the same museum, by the way, that featured this baseball exhibit last summer (which I wrote about here). They stocked their gift shop with all sorts of baseball books when that exhibit was up, but lots of copies apparently didn’t sell, and now they’re unloading all sorts of great titles for 75% off. Live in NYC and want a copy of Moneyball or Nine Innings for three bucks and change? This is the place. I got this for $7.50, plus there was a massive coffee table book about stadiums that I totally would’ve bought except it was too heavy to lug around for the rest of the day.
New ESPN column today (fifth one this month, don’tcha know) — here’s the link.
Uni Watch News Ticker: This is pretty cool (with thanks to Michael Pinta). … In response to yesterday’s query about whether Marc Sagmoen was the only player to have his number retired after playing one game, Kent Foster, Matt Dubroff, and Mike Vanne all pointed out that Travis Roy of the Boston University Terriers hockey team had his No. 24 retired after playing only one game. During that game, 11 seconds into his first shift, he was paralyzed and never played again. … Richard Stover reports that several of the uniform illustrations The First 50 Years (featured in yesterday’s entry) were also featured on this poster in 1970. “I have a copy from my youth,” he writes, “but of course I had to draw in a ‘19′ on the Chargers’ helmet, and some other notes elsewhere in the poster.” … Speaking of The First 50 Years, there’s a deluxe edition of the book, which includes a two LPs, a commemorative coin, and a poster (not the one I just linked to), and it’ll only set you back a cool grand (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). … Yesterday’s post also featured a link to this early Redskins photo, which prompted Brian Codagnone to report that the Sports Museum in Boston (where he serves as associate curator) has one of those early ’Skins sweaters on display. … The Jets will wear Titans throwbacks for their home opener, plus they’ll be wearing a Super Bowl anniversary patch on October 26th. … Finally got a good shot of Lou Piniella still wearing his All-Star Game patch (big thanks to Mark Snyder). … Back in this site’s early days, I wrote about Kenji Johjima wearing that rubber doohickey on his catcher’s helmet to help keep his mask’s strap in place. But here’s something he wasn’t doing back then: He’s added the M’s logo to his brim (with thanks to Kevin Zdancewicz). … “My brother is just finishing a degree at Lehigh, and I made the drive out to see him just a couple weeks ago,” writes Burrill Strong. “As part of our walk around the (gorgeous) campus, we went into their small athletic hall of fame, and a banner celebrating an undefeated football season nearly 60 years ago caught my eye because it featured Lehigh’s old mascot. Their athletic teams are now known as the Mountain Hawks, but before that, thanks to their strong engineering school, they were known as the Engineers, and their old engineer mascot logo immediately put a smile on my face. Sadly, as far as I can tell, the university doesn’t even sell retro shirts with the engineer; he’s pretty much relegated to the banners in the hall of fame.” … As usual, when someone recommends a soccer-related uni site, I can never remember if I’ve linked to it before, but just in case: Michael Doucette says this site is doing a good job of documenting all of the season’s new uni releases as they happen. … Attention footwear mavens: This page breaks down all of the U.S. Olympic track and field qualifiers by event and shoe brand (nice find by Jonathan Cain). … Dan Snider notes that John Maine is once again wearing his cap over his ears, a phenomenon we first discussed a few months ago. … Andrew Habermehl confirms that BU’s 100th-anniversary hoops logo will indeed be worn as a jersey patch this season. … Jere Smith sent along this shot, which I saw as a kid but had forgotten about. “Looks like he was on the Alabama football team,” says Jere. I’ve asked the Cardinals Hall of Fame if they can tell us more about that big helmet number. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Jack Wilson switched to high cuffs and says it helped him break out of his slump.

Good throwback game last night between the O’s and the Jays (interupted by rain unfortunately). O’s wore the ‘83 polyesters and Jays had the powder blues on. Looked like the O’s fixed the batting helmet issue that plagued them during the ‘71 throwback game.

SWEET throwbacks that the O’s wore last night. They are continuing the game today at 12:35, I wonder if they’ll wear the same uni’s. the Blue Jays powder blue duds look like crappy pajamas or a little league team. NNOB and a centered logo on the front? Feh! P.S. Anyone notice the REAL orange stirrups Ramon Hernandez and co. were wearing?

I put this in last night’s comments, but it was late and it’s been brought up a lot here, so I wanted to make sure everyone saw it:
So they finally explained during tonight’s broadcast why the Brewers untuck their shirts after a win …
Apparently Mike Cameron started it as a tribute to his dad. When his dad came home from a hard days’ work the first thing he’d do is untuck his shirt and kick off his shoes.
The rest of the team thought it was a nice gesture and picked it up, so they do it as a tribute to their dads. They can’t exactly kick off their shoes, but if they win, they untuck their jerseys.
Kind of like “We came out and got the job. Good day’s work, time to go relax.”
Another commenter found picks of Cameron untucking with every team he’s been with - check out the end of last night’s comments.

LL, are those pics from a High School All Star Game?
The first thing that I noticed is that the tackler’s main? logo looks like the Eagles’ old wings, more closely, those of the Rice Owls!
Also, on the ballcarriers left side, there is a modified Oregon logo, probably used for a high school.
Along the center stipe of his helmet, there is a wordmark of South.
The TV number is very interesting on the ballcarrier, simply a red outline uppon the jersey, however, the tackler doesn’t have any.
Most interesting to me is the tacklers’ choice of helmet:
Schutt DNA, with the “Bulldog” facemask that LeVar Arrington and Lorenzo Neal were the first players to wear.
That mask was part of the “motocross” inspired line made by Schutt!

From the Jets throwback article:
“In addition to the ’08 home opener, New York’s AFC representative will also don the blue jerseys and gold pants — replicas of the uniforms the New York Titans wore, with some modifications, from 1960-62 — in their third home contest, a post-bye Oct. 12 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.”
Fingers crossed for Bengals throwbacks!

I’m a Lehigh Alum and we were still the engineers when I was there (The mascot switched to the Mountain Hawk sometime around ‘92 or ‘93.) The School wanted to get away from being thought of as only an Engineering school and had a vote to change the mascot. All of the ideas sucked (IMHO). There also used to be a Train Engineer mascot. Looks like the student population also wants to do away with the awful Mountain hawk. Unfortunatly, I can’t readily find any pics of the old mascot.

A little more background on Travis Roy. His jersey is actually the only one in BU hockey history to be retired. Apparently, Shawn McEachern once asked Coach Jack Parker if he was gonna retire Mac’s no. 15, and Jack said, ‘if we ever retire that number, it’s gonna be for three-time All American Rick Meagher, Shawn.’
But considering the guys who have played at BU (Eruzione, Craig, Silk, O’Callahan, McEachern, Amonte, Tkachuk, Drury, Pandolfo, Grier most notably), I can’t see them ever retiring another number except perhaps the no. 6 that Parker wore as a player at BU.

Jets did a great job on those Titans unis…just too bad the gold isn’t as light-colored as it actually was in ‘61-’62. The ‘60 team, with much plainer unis (no shouler loops, no white on unis at all), wore that darker old gold. Still, though, fun to see, because they are—all things considered and comepared to many of the other throwbacks—very accurate.
And, yeah, would be fun to see “BENGALS” on the side of a plain orange helmet and TV-less jerseys with simple sleeve striping again…especially when you consider their current jumbled monstrosities.

It’s the same exact reason the Brewers celebrated their World Series LOSS in 1982 last season with a Silver anniversary patch… we don’t have much to celebrate in Brew City as far as championships go, so we have to celebrate something. He was a kid that when in the on-deck circle, you could always go up to the fence and wish him good luck, and receive a thanks, or hello, or sincere response from!
The only other player that I liked as much as him in a Cardinals uniform was Nomar! And that’s saying something!

Not likely, Nike (kaching, kaching!) has made orange replicas of it’s previous VT designs to sell but have never been put on the field. The last time they wore either orange jerseys or orange pants was the same game in 1994 against UVa and were humiliated 42-23. Beamer has stated many times that orange will never return as a jersey color at Virginia Tech. He allegedly had those jerseys burned after the game.

In Paul’s ESPN column today mention is made of the all the ‘74 Phillies’ All-Stars earing white shoes for the game, and perhaps at least one regular season game thereafter.
The Phillies, of coure, later all wore white shoes for an entire season (’76, maybe?).
So (and this isn’t about liking or disliking white shoes), what teams were “One Season White Shoes Wonders”?
I know of the Phillies, Angels (one of the seasons F.Robinson was there) and Senators (in ‘71 D.C. swansong).
Any others?

Even though it does seem sacrelig, I have to agree with that sentence. The three stripes running down the shoulders and sleeves have really become such a mainstay in football jerseys, for a while now too. When I think of certain teams, like modern day Liverpool, I think the 3 Adidas stripes. Same with many clubs who share the stripes. If it’s not classic now, it most def will be when all’s said and done.

Couple things: no the stripes themselves aren’t their logo but three stripes are incorporated into both the current and classic logos:
http://en.wikipedia....
http://en.wikipedia....
Also, there were items that were branded with the slogan: Adidas the brand with three stripes. When you think of Adidas, you think of three stripes.
Now, taking the “logo creep” blinders off for a second. I’m not sure how you CAN’T refer to the Adidas design as classic. Classic in the sense of iconic, in the sense of instant recognition, etc. If it’s a retro style, then referring to it as classic is fine. I’m sure in many parts of Europe, the three-stripe design was a template for teams throughout the 70s and 80s.
I’ve said for a long time that the three stripes on shorts and shoulders is a far worse case of logo creep than randomly placed swooshes but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears with all the anti-Nike peeps in here. Adidas took their main design element and incorporated in the design and styling of a uniform. Outside of what I’ve said of the Broncos in the past (the pants stripes were said to have been swoosh-inspired and there appears to be a swoosh in the horse logo) I can’t recall the swoosh being part of design element of a uniform.
Maybe because soccer isn’t on the forefront to Americans, this has been swept under the rug. I’m sure some of you logo creeps would yell foul play of an American football team or baseball team incorporated a three-stripe Adidas motif.

Everyone knowS the Pirates Need Neagle
How lame!!! It was in the context that I believe the trade deadline was looming and the Pirates were getting ready for their annual firesale and Denny Neagle was rumored to be up for trade….
but i digress, anyway, back to Morgan. All of the above being said, those quotes are nonsense. Paul, were those quotes from source material or did you interview Morgan. If so, I hope it was by phone and not face-to-face because I would have found it hard not to smirk or roll my eyes.
Let me get this straight, did Dave Parker make up for wearing a mask by switching to sneakers? In other words, the most dangerous part of the baseball uniform are metal spikes. Also, how many times is sliding players head coming in contact with the middle infielder? Did Morgan forget that guys normally don’t break up double plays sliding head first!!!
Parker was a big, physical presence and mask or not, he had to have middle infielders all around the NL on their toes and I can’t see the mask worrying them any more/less.

As a fan, it is my right to boo someone when I am paying for their work as an entertainer and they fail miserably. These people are professionals, and should perform to the highest standard night in and night out with no questions asked. The obscene amounts of money that pro athletes make compared to blue-collar Joe makes them accountable to the people lining their pockets with greenbacks.
I understand that people may have a bad day/night/whatever, but it’s the same as booing a crappy theatre performance or a terrible stand-up comedian.
I paid to be entertained. The athlete took my money with the understanding that he’s entertaining me to the best level that he can. If he can’t handle it, give me my money back or get the hell outta Dodge.

On the Lehigh topic:
1)I would be so happy if they dropped the Mountain Hawk and went back to the Engineer. What really irritates me about the whole thing is that the old mascot wasn’t demeaning or offensive, and even more importantly, it had incredibly important significance in the history of the university. That made it a more worthwhile mascot than most, and yet they decided to cast it aside. IMO, that’s a mistake that needs to be fixed sooner rather than later.
2)As far as the shirt printing, that was actually why I put together the graphic that was linked in the ticker (though that’s scaled down a bit); as far as I can tell, Lehigh just doesn’t offer merchandise featuring the engineer, so I figured I would just do it on my own. The photographs I got of the engineer weren’t really suitable for printing, so I had to clean them up a bit (from this and this to this).
Also, on the topic of high school football all-star games: I’ve photographed Michigan’s all-star game for the last couple years, and yeah, some of the guys tend to turn their helmets into real messes with different decals all over the place, and the uniforms are never particularly remarkable.

gotta agree with teebz, here…for the most part
i do think paying fans have every right to boo (or cheer, raz, scream [with moderate profanity, especially when kids are present], yell, etc. etc. etc.) if their player fails to perform…some fans (read: certain cities who also boo santa claus) may take it to the extreme…other cities’ fans (where a large arch is, for example) will most likely NEVER boo their own…different strokes for different folks
as long as they’re not throwing batteries (im talking to you ny’ers), syringes (fans in cities not named san francisco everywhere baroid played) or other crap like beer or bottles, i think fans have the right to express their disdain at the opponent as well
while i agree it’s OK to applaud a stellar play or good defensive effort by an opponent, tho…
i completely disagree with those (im talking to you, 1997 cubs) who shake a players hand as he rounds the bases after taking steve trachsel deep and then coming off the field and hugging the guy (or was sammy secretly exchanging cash for andro???)…

Re: Stripes and logo creep.
When is it a design element and when is it logo creep? The general consensus around here is “stripes good, logos bad,” and I tend to agree. I know that adidas is “The Brand With the Three Stripes (R)” (and it says so right on the front of an old t-shirt I have), but I like the stripes on the shoulders and they look great down the side of the shorts. I mean, if it were two or four stripes, most of you would be cheering.
I say, “Stripes is stripes is stripes, and stripes are good…”

Uniform cycles are required by the league to at least be 5 years long. The new uniforms, with the orange alts, debuted in 2004. What i meant was the league will not allow the Bengals to change uniform designs, to possibly include a throwback, until at least 2009.

For me it crosses the line from “design element” to “logo creep” when it’s identical on every damn uniform you make (Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, Real Madrid, all of MLS), even where it clearly doesn’t belong (i.e. Newcastle, where the 3 Adidas stripes clash horribly with the wide shirt stripes that’s the iconic Newcastle look).

Regarding the players with numbers retired after one game, I have an example that isn’t quite a number, and isn’t professional. Jack Trice played one game for Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in 1923 before dying due to injuries suffered in that game. The players didn’t wear numbers at the time, so there wasn’t one to retire, but the school’s football stadium is named after him, which is along the same lines.

If that’s Eduardo’s injury, which is what it looks like, you (and whoever created that) are one sick fuck. No smiley.

Yeah, that was a July 4th thing. They will do it again for the 9/11 weekend as well.
Onto other bidness. Paul was so busy this week he forgot to announce the winners of the Yankee Stadium DVDs. On Paul’s behalf, congratulations to, with a bit of Chris Berman-izing…
Troy “You Know I’ve Gone from” Ragsdale “To Riches”
and…
David “Hello” Neuman. (Also got a Seinfeld reference in…NTTAWWT.)
Your DVDs will soon be on their way in about two weeks time.

Strange. The Packers introduced two different throwbacks in the space of three years. And the Browns introduced alternate orange jerseys starting in 2002, then wore retro alts in the 2006 season. That’s a four-year cycle.
Is that a new rule?

When the stripes become a branding signature, cross the line and are no longer good.
The three stripes are every bit a logo as the swoosh.

Yes, that is something prety much any local sports store or someone who makes shirts could do. With the proper program, you could easily use that image and either have the logo screenprinted or embroidered fairly easily.

It may also be more economically feasable to use a computer program/specialty paper purchased at a local mass-retailer (in the “crafts” and “sewing” section) that will allow you to print an iron-on image off your home computer (w/ bubble jet printer).
