And I Bet He’s Got a Pushy Agent, Too

kid.jpg

Goddang kids today, with their backwards caps and baggy pants. No respect for the game, I tells ya. And what’s with the Crocs?! I suppose he has an endorsement deal with them and gets all his shoes for free, freakin’ spoiled athletes nowadays…..

Seriously: How come everyone’s All-Star BP jersey has their team logo on the right sleeve (additional examples here, here, here, here, here, here, and here) except for the Rangers’ players, who wore the Texas state flag? Yes, that’s what the Rangers normally wear on their game jerseys, but that’s not the point — the flag is not the team’s logo. Seems inconsistent, no?

But that’s nothing compared to all the bumper crop of All-Star inconsistencies that can be found in today’s ESPN column, the first of two ESPN installments this week (the other one will run on Friday). See you over there soon.

July Raffle: Reader James Craven attended MLB’s Fan Fest on Saturday and came away with a few copies of a new DVD called Yankee Stadium: Baseball’s Cathedral, which he describes as “an excellent piece of video with Chazz Palminteri narrating.” He’s generously offered to raffle off two of the copies he scored, an offer I’ve happily accepted.

To enter, send a blank e-mail with your name and address to uniraffle [at] earthlink [dot] net (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address, please) by 10pm this Friday. One entry per person, but everyone enrolled in the Uni Watch membership program at the time of the drawing will automatically get three bonus entries.

I’ll announce the winner on Monday. Good luck to all, and big thanks to James for donating the DVDs.

Uni Watch Signal Flare: Hey, is Ryan Etgen out there? If so, Ryan, please drop me a line. Thanks.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Pretty cool 1930 cheerleader/marching band catalog here. … Also cool (but overpriced): this 1962 MacGregor catalog. … And if you liked my recent entry about the 1963 Rawlings uni catalog, here’s the 1964 version. … The jacket Lou Gehrig wore on the day his iron-man streak ended is going up for auction (with thanks to Chris Mercanti). … Looks like the lowercase “c” on John McDonald’s NOB may have thrown off the Blue Jays’ seamstress (with thanks to Christian Otto, writing all the way from Germany). … Cool story here about bike customization based on which jersey the cyclist is wearing (thanks, Bryan). … Here’s another example of purple as a form of silent protest (with thanks to Jim Borwick). … Mike Engle attended MLB’s All-Star Fan Fest and took a ton of photos, which he’s organized into several albums. Go to this page and check out each album listed in the left-hand column. … Interesting football uni being worn by Norview High in Norfolk, Virginia (with thanks to Tris Wykes). … The Mountain West Conference has a new 10th-anniversary logo (with thanks to Rob Montoya). … The Sonics-no-more don’t have a new name yet, but that isn’t stopping the NBA from selling new OKC merch. Jeez. Incidentally, Jim Mcglynn notes that Sonic Drive-In’s corporate HQ is in OKC, which would have made the “Sonics” name problematic (or ideal, depending on how you look at it). … While looking for something else, I came across these Des Moines Bruins throwbacks, which look like some of the best throwbacks I’ve ever seen. Hot stuff! … Yesterday I linked to this tag from these shorts. That led, of course, to some additional info from sporting goods historian Terry Proctor: “Those shorts are part of the ‘SandMark Collection’ of basketball uniforms introduced in 1969 by SandKnit. They offered 10 complete uniform packages, including jersey, shorts, knee-length stirrup hose, warm-up jacket, and warm-up pants. Each uniform component was coordinated to make a complete uniform statement. The shorts shown were a one-color version of the SandMark style worn by the Seattle SuperSonics. Probably the most memorable SandMark combination was the ‘Race Car’ set worn by Marquette that featured the large tackle twill circle with numbers inside and the racing stripes down only one side of the uniform. We sold this uniform to two high schools. Pretty wild stuff as we headed into the 1970s.” … “I am an employee at the Penn State All-Sports Museum located in Beaver Stadium,” writes Michael Cook. “Recently we redesigned a display that contained a jersey worn by Larry Johnson during his 2,000-yard rushing season at PSU. As I was looking at the jersey, I noticed something on it that I’d never seen before: Just above the TV number on each sleeve is the letters ‘PSU’ in a small blue patch exactly matching the color of the jersey.” … Mike Treat says he thinks the green shoes being worn by Junior Griffey in this shot are from the 1999 All-Star Game, but he can’t confirm it. Anyone..? … Can’t remember if I’ve linked to this before, but the Magic have a new 20th-anniversary patch. Not sure if it’ll be used on jerseys, but that seems like a pretty safe bet (with thanks to Mark Victor Malazarte).

in light of his performance, maybe the patch should have been this

Seriously: How come everyone’s All-Star BP jersey has their team logo on the right sleeve (additional examples here, here, here, here, here, here, and here) except for the Rangers’ players, who wore the Texas state flag?

Well, the picture you showed of Evan Longoria shows that the Rays jerseys use their team sleeve patch (the manta ray) as opposed to their team logo (the “Rays” wordmark in the baseball diamond). Just like the Rangers use their team sleeve patch.

Also, I believe the Diamondbacks use their team sleeve patch (the “db” snakehead) as opposed to the “A” logo. At least that’s what one of their prospects was wearing in the Futures Game

Do all the regular season BP jersey’s have the piping around the neck extending down a few inches? Something about it I really like…..

THat pic of Junior can’t be from the 1999 All-Star Game: the 1999 All-star game was played at Fenway Park, and that sure isn’t Fenway park in the background.

I have a PSU replica jersey and it has the same patch as the Larry Johnson jersey mentioned. I’m not sure if they still do it but I thought it was standard…

Looks more like a well placed fold than a sewing miscue on the John McDonald picture…

I believe he Griffey picture is from the 1994 All Star Game in Pittsburgh.

Could that picture of Junior be from the 1991 ASG in Toronto? I just guessing because it looks like a dome.

Okay, scrap 1991 ASG in Toronto. They didn’t have teal yet

I was at the home run derby and it was awesome.

I noticed Alfonso Soriano during batting practice in the outfield sporting his Cub blue sanitaries with the grey uni’s. Couldn’t MLB spring for some black socks? WTF?

I bet that Griffey pic is from the ‘96 all star game in Philly (Veterans Stadium). It’s the only other astroturf site since ‘91 (Toronto), and we know Seattle didn’t wear those unis in 1991.

Griffy pic is at ‘94 in Pitt! No Doubt!

check that – it could have been Pittsburgh in ‘94 (Three Rivers). It’s Pittsburgh or Philly.

Um, a player is required to wear their team’s game pants and socks during the BP sessions.

And even if MLB were to issue socks matching the BP uniforms, they would be Yankee navy blue, not black.

this may have been mentioned before, but if they are the Tampa Bay Rays and not the DEVIL RAYS, why is there a devil ray on their sleeve?

Here is a video of Griffey getting a hit in the 1994 ASG.

What a great column on ESPN on the All-Star Game. By the way, in ‘75, I think Vida Blue wore white pants for the team picture, if memory serves correctly (I have the picture at home and will check it). Didn’t know until today he wore gold for the game. The A’s rarely wore gold or green pants and unlike the Pirates of later years they never mixed green jerseys with gold pants or vice-versa. Wish they would bring back the gold jerseys.

Some guy brought protective head gear to the HR Derby last night.

And there was a double zero sighting.

Also, that Griffey photo couldn’t have been Toronto. They’re AL, and he’d have his home whites on then.

Two notes on that video clip:

1) They mention that Griffey won the HR derby — with SEVEN homers! Compare that to last night.

2) Even in a 20-second clip, Joe Morgan managed to fuck up his “analysis.” He says Maddux got a fastball “up.” Watch where the pitch is.

The reason for such a high number is that Japanese teams have chosen give the managers numbers that are above the 70 players on the big league and minor league rosters in Japan.

Bobby Valentine wears the number 2. Even when Oh managed the Giants, he was #1, he changed to 89 when he went to the Hawks.

However, Shigeo Nagashima, who wore #3 with the Yomiuri Giants, started with the #90 after retiring, then moved to #33 in the 1990s, while managing Matsui, then finally shifted to #3 in 2000.

The HR derby was different back then.

Funny to see tight uniforms now.

Well, a Devil Ray is still a Ray.

The biggest problem I have with their re-bland-ing is that they’re trying to have it both ways. A glint of light for sun rays, and a devil ray sleeve patch.

Trying to be all things to all people once again results in not actually being anything at all.

Not only that, but there isn’t one guy named Ray on the whole friggin roster.

If the Rays were to suddenly dissappear, would you miss them?

Hey guys –

I need to pick a number for my adult league baseball team, and of course I’m looking for something aesthetically pleasing (or not, perhaps something that’s more of an oddity). I’m currently leaning towards 62. Thoughts?

Props to Utley, Berkman, Uggla for wearing their team hats and not the “NATIONAL” BP hats. I think they were the only 3…maybe they didn’t like the gray caps?

If anyone caught the Celebrity/Legend Softball game after the HR Derby, maybe you noticed Spike Lee in the outfield wearing that hideous hat that has been promoted by New Era.

Paul…great article today! However I wish you had done a short paragraph on the year that the AMERICAN/NATIONAL jerseys were briefly announced to be the game day uniforms – and then yanked after an uproar. What year was that?

Griffey: keep in mind he’s in road greys. That means if it’s from an ASG, it’s in a National League park. So it isn’t 1999 or 1991. It’s from an even-numbered year (they still stuck to the alternating home league format back then).

Uh, I give up. I don’t recall that happening at all… I think there was a year when some people mistakenly thought the new BP jerseys were going to be used in the games. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of..?

Or are we talking about two different things?

Here’s what I did with my team. Everyone has the numeral 8 in their number. For example, 8, 18, 28, 38, 48, 58, 68, 78, 88, 98, 81, 82 and etc.

Then you change the name of your team to the Crazy 8’s or the Ocho Locos.

I was in Pittsburgh in ‘94. The Home Run derby was on Monday at noon and it was called the Gatorade All-Star Workout. Tickets were $5, but we actually received freebies from a Gatorade tent down by the fountain on Sunday. We also got tickets to the premiere of “Angels in the Outfield” at Three Rivers Stadium on Sunday night. Believe it or not the movie tickets were being scalped but you couldn’t give away the All-Star Workout tickets. All-Star Workout was so informal that MLB let “Angels in the Outfield” star Tony Danza take some swings. I remember Chris Berman introducing him as “Hold Me Closer Tony Danza”.

Griffey’s shoes were a teal that matched the Mariner’s BP Jersey.

I think it was pretty sweet to see the Texas flag instead of the regular Rangers logo. And I hate Texas.

We were talking about ‘94 at work the other day because it we were listening to the HR Derby on the radio live because it was being taped for broadcast later that day. Man, Big Hurt put on a display that day! I wasn’t able to go to the workout day but I did get to go to the game. I had just started a job and was only able to get one day off so I think I chose wisely. That ‘94 game was one of the better ones in recent memory.

We also had a chuckle at what a big deal they were making out of that remake of “Angels”.

Last night I was watching a 1987 yearbook for the Seahawks and when discussing the Boz, clips showed him wearing number 55 that the NFL mandated. He was also shown wearing 44 as he had in college. Was the number 44 worn during the pre-season and if so, does the NFL not care about the numbers until the regular season?

Apparently Bud Selig was only thinking aloud about wearing special uniforms for the game, but it was never an official press release or decision. I found 2 columns from June 2003 mentioning this. I guess his comments drew enough fire for Rob Neyer to discuss it.

Are the NL teams wearing their road pants/socks with the gray batting practice jerseys? That’s the way it looked last night.

If that’s the case, the Padres players will look pretty awful with gray shirts and sand pants.

That Griffey pic could be from 1994, mostly because by 1996 he had his own signature shoe, 1995 he wore another nike that was black with teal stripes, the only thing is, in ‘94 they wore a gold MLB 125th anniversary patch on one of the sleeves, and I can’t make out the patch in the pic.

Yes, they were wearing their own pants. The San Diego players did look awful. The one person I spotted looked like he was wearing dirty pants.

Absolutely great ESPN article. But that pre-ASG trade reminded me of the Carlos Beltran fiasco a few years back, 2004 or 2005 maybe? Wasn’t he voted to the AL squad as a member of the Royals then traded to the Astros? What happened then? Can anyone refresh my memory?

Getty/Yahoo should be embarrassed identifying Cubs slugger Zambrano at the home run derby as A. Ramirez.

Anyway, a few days ago someone here noticed that Aramis was wearing his socks in a new style (high sock). Some other Cub fans noticed this too and asked about it at the official Cubs MLB.com site. Here was his answer:

“Friends of mine in the Dominican say I look good like that. They say I look faster.”

Maybe they’re trying to make the Ray (or manta ray, or whatever) the mascot, kinda like the A’s and their elepant. If that’s the case, it seems really forced.

Much better when they wear their own hats. The notion of selling one-off hats apparently outweighs the fact that for casual fans, and even some serious fans, the hat helps you figure out who the guys are when camera cuts to shots of other players watching the HR Contest.

Not to mention it’s just more colorful.

Don’t have problem with a team trying all gray, just is out of place in a situation where part of the appeal is guys from all the teams being in one place at same time.

One American Legion team around here did all gray one summer. Completely gray hats, too. Lettering and numbers were Navy. The players even sprayed their batting helmets gray. Was kinda cool. Because ONE team did it. If more than one, then, no, loses its appeal expotentially.

Royals could make it work. All gray hats with, say, Royal “KC” edged in White. Would be interesting to see, anyway.

funny you should mention that

see first post and a few after for replies

AOL’s home page today has a nice photo gallery on Yankee Stadium’s Greatest Moments. In the midst of baseball season is easy to forget the NFL Sudden Death game of ‘58 was played there, for example. It includes at least one “non-sports” moment, too.

I’d just like to defend the original guy who suggested Griffey’s shoes were from the ‘99 ASG. The wording only suggests the shoes are from the game, not that the picture is from the game.

(I also did the “what kind of of fool would think that’s Fenway Park?! That’s pre-POS-ter-ous!!” thing before realizing it.)

Yeah, saw that. Was thinking about that uni, but with a gray visor instead of Royal. I think the Orioles, Royals and Pirates recent gray hats are avail at mlb.com. Not sure, but I know I saw them somewhere recently.

Interesting that the third base coach (Gene LaMont) in that Griffey video is wearing the Sox black alt jersey, not the White Sox road grey uni. In the video it looks like Frank Thomas is next up at the plate and is also wearing the black alt jersey.

The Griffey pic and video posted in the comments here looks awfully green-cast. I think if the color were corrected a bit, those shoes would be more of a teal (like the M’s wore).

The Texas flag sleeve patch is part of the Rangers’ branding scheme. Their AA franchise in Frisco, TX wears the same sleeve patch.

He was selected for the AL squad and then traded in late June. At first they told him he wouldn’t be on the NL squad, but then Junior Griffey went down with an injury and Beltran became his replacement. Not quite as uni-unique as the Shaw situation, since Shaw had literally never worn a Dodgers uniform until the ASG, while Beltran had already played for the Astros by the time of the ‘04 game. That’s why I didn’t include him in the (already very long) timeline.

They were teal. I remember watching the game. Can’t tell u what year, but do remember noticing the shoes as an addition to the “special shoes for the All-Star Game” list.

Dave Parker, for example, in different years had some gold-white ones with a black Pony insignia and gold Brooks with black trim. That famous throw he made from right field in Seattle is in the Brooks, I think. Don’t hold me to that, though. If it’s Ponys then he wore them three times, cuz I have a photo of him in gold-white Ponys from an outdoor game.

I’m getting tired of Penn State fancifying their uniforms.

On the Penn State jerseys…
The whites also have the PSU sewn on them. You never likely saw them in games, as there almost impossible to see even when it’s right in front of you.

I believe it started when Nike hooked up with PSU in the mid/late 90’s.

That is 110% 1994. I have been in 3 Rivers hundreds of times and just looking down the line in the picture you can tell where the cameramen setup during games.

Until the mid 1990s, the White Sox, Indians and Athletics would wear their alts in the All-Star game. That came to an end in 1997, though I think it was Ken Caminiti in that year’s game who mistakenly autographed his road jersey and had to wear his alt Padres jersey.

I hope they have a bonfire for those gray BP jerseys and hats after the game….

Neither — looks like lightweight wool flannel to me. And yeah, they’re really gorgeous.

Couldn’t the Griffey pic be from 1993 Opening Day at the Kingdome, when they wore the new road jerseys at home?

Another thing about those throwbacks: The cap features vertically arched lettering, even though there are only two letters! Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

Why vertically arch the lettering on the cap but not on the jersey?

In the ESPN column about Alomar’s gear in 1997; I would bet that’s also the first time the “Hockey style” catcher’s mask is used in an All-Star game, it was invented by Charlie O’Brien while he was a member of the Blue Jays (96-97).

of course, the Texas flag on the ASG BP jerseys are “technically” wrong, in that it is “flying” from the rear of the body to the front when it should be “flying” from front to back.

it appears correctly on the actual Texas Rangers jerseys where they display the patch on the left sleeve. they just took the flag “alternate logo” and stuck it on the right sleeve for those BP jerseys.

In the ESPN column about Alomar’s gear in 1997; I would bet that’s also the first time the “Hockey style” catcher’s mask is used in an All-Star game, it was invented by Charlie O’Brien while he was a member of the Blue Jays (96-97).

Answered my own question, here’s an article saying O’Brien was able to wear his mask in Sept. 1996 vs the Yankees. So the 1997 All-Star game would be the first possible time it was worn in the game.

Somehow we ended up with two #62s on our company team, so we had to rip the 6 off of one and make it an offset #2 jersey.

Ya gotta go with a single digit, though, since there are so few of them available.

Another thing about those throwbacks: The cap features vertically arched lettering, even though there are only two letters! Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

Why vertically arch the lettering on the cap but not on the jersey?

Probably cuz the obvious parent club (Cubs) had the same style jersey lettering. That’s an educated guess, of course.

this may have been mentioned before, but if they are the Tampa Bay Rays and not the DEVIL RAYS, why is there a devil ray on their sleeve?

I may be completely wrong about this, but I believe that it is a Manta Ray, which for all I know could also be called a Devil Ray. I’m sure that was no help whatsoever.

Well, a Devil Ray is still a Ray.

The biggest problem I have with their re-bland-ing is that they’re trying to have it both ways. A glint of light for sun rays, and a devil ray sleeve patch.

Trying to be all things to all people once again results in not actually being anything at all.

Maybe they’re trying to make the Ray (or manta ray, or whatever) the mascot, kinda like the A’s and their elepant. If that’s the case, it seems really forced.

Sorry, should be “elephant”. “Elepants” are what CC Sabathia wears.

The Rays are still identified with the sea creature of the same name. There is a large touch tank with cow-nosed rays at The Trop.

Did anyone notice that last night, in the home run derby, Ryan Braun wore his Brewers cap? Everyone else had AL or NL All-star caps but Ryan wore the standard Brewers cap. Sorry no pictures…

The Flickr images are working fine for me in Safari, but not in Firefox (which are the only two browsers I use). Never had that problem before, and I assume it’s just a temporary thing, but if they’re not working for you, try a different browser.

Football yes, baseball no (as far as missing it, both sports had memorable moments there).

PNC Park doesn’t make me miss Three Rivers AT ALL, but Heinz Field, to me, was really not done well (comparatively speaking, when looking at Philly, Detroit, Seattle and Arizona’s newer NFL facilities). I kind of wish they could have kept Three Rivers for football and reconfigured it out of the cement bowl, multi-purpose thing (i.e. a reverse old-Busch Stadium after the Rams moved to the Dome) as a kick-ass, football only stadium.

Was the number 44 worn during the pre-season and if so, does the NFL not care about the numbers until the regular season?

boz in 44 w/hawks

im almost positive it was preseason, because there was an uproar at the time that he HAD to wear a number in the 50’s because of his position

…he also had a photo of john elway on his stool…take that FWIW

Didn’t the Boz once come out onto the field in a regular season game wearing number 55 only to pull it off and reveal a number 44 jersey? I think the league came down on him hard, and it never happened again.

Jim Tressel was on ESPN First Take this morning and they asked him how many sweater vests he plans on wearing the upcoming season. He said he only wear 2, grey at home and scarlet on the road. He wears contrasting colors to his teams uniforms so he can be found easily on the sideline.

Not sure if this has been talked about before or not but I found it pretty neat.

old-Busch Stadium was not really kick ass, as much as it we reasonably well taken care of and not nearly as bad as it could have been.

Think of it this way. Heinz got taken care of a few years ago when everbody was flush with cash. Imagine where we’d be now if they had just upgraded Three Rivers 7 years ago. A new owner would want a new stadium (eventually the Cardinals got one, despite the upgrades) and there is no money for that today.

Everything you say is true, I just hate Heinz Field!!! The open end, for one hurts not only the kicking game (although Reed’s done a damn good job, how he wasn’t a Pro Bowler last year is beyond me. Dude missed two FGs all season, one was over 50 and one was on that slop on Monday Night in that 3-0 game with Miami) but the noise factor. I’m hoping in the future they close that off, I think I heard about a plan to add more seats.

That’s another thing, with as rabid a fan base the Steelers have and a very long season ticket waiting list, the capacity for heinz could have been 75-80K easily.

…and don’t get me started on the playing surface!!!

I think I heard about a plan to add more seats

They should come up with a plan to get the people that have seats in their’s first. The place is usually empty for most of the second half.

That’s what is always said but I think it’s rubbish. I’m a season ticket holder for Pitt and that field starts to look bad very early on. The media always blame the high school championships that are held there over Thanksgiving weekend but that field is toast well before the end of November.

The Miami game was a freak thing because they messed around and then it rained tons and caused a terrible mess.

Bottom line is they should bite the damn bullet and put the fieldturf in already.

The Pitt band is a big part of the problem. They let march under any circumstance even if its raining, and given the level of use the field gets, they probably should not be permitted to march at all. Not to mention other teams bands.

I would be interested to see one with Vida. The team picture in the 1975 WS program specifically states that Vida was absent when the photo was taken.

AND the story tells us they’re “stylish,” and that they have black, gold and white options for both jerseys and pants.

Those unis look about exactly as many of us expected. And there you have it, for all their attempts to be original, the companies (don’t mean just Nike, but they seem to be the most obvious to whom this applies) are now in a rut. They have become predictable, and that’s among the worst things you can say to designer.

Not everyone has to have three different color sets of jerseys and pants, boys n’ girls. Or decorative piping curving from somewhere to somewhere else. You’ve stopped being original when you simply start adapting your same ideas. They’re so concerned with staying outside the box that they’ve not created their own new box.

Don’t know if we’ve cleared up the Griffey Junior green shoes topic, that great ASG clip from 1994 helps, but based solely on the fact he’s not wearing Air Griffey sneakers, it’s most definitely pre-1995. Those green Nikes he’s wearing in that pic look like a green version of the simple black ones he wore before he got his own personalized line in 1995. He started wearing the Air Diamond Furys in ‘95 that had ‘JR’ on the tongue and ‘24′ in silver cursive on the sides and from then on each edition was released as the Air Griffey 2,3, and so on. To make a long story short, the green shoes in the picture do not look like any version of the Air Griffey line, so they must be pre-1995.

Did I sound like I was talking about specifics? Again, talking about general design look/philosophy. No, no one has Oregon’s tire tracks. Yes, I know that.

The fact that you rush to point out two exceptions sorta proves the point. Just the fact that they “exceptions”.

If I say, “Most major league wear gray on the road,” and someone rushes to point out that the Padres wear sand…it actually validates the original observations. When exceptions are notable, then the rule is true.

The actual old saying, btw, is “That’s the exception that proves the rule.”

He means numbers 50 and higher, which until perhaps the late 80s were considered to be numbers issued in spring training to players who were unlikely to go north with the big club. Most players, upon making the final cut, were delighted to get a lower number. Photos have been posted here showing Henry Aaron in his early #52, which he gladly surrendered for #44 becuase there was a “stigma” players attached to any number higher than 49. Some players, like Drysdale, didi chose to retain their higher numbers for reasons of their own, that’s true. Anyone can argue that isn’t the way it was (and note we say “traditionally” not “absolutely”)…til they pass out if they want…but they’ll still be wrong.

Here’s a thought, and it’s why Jared Allen’s personna awaits judgement in my book. I’d like to think a player, fearing people would think he aksed for that number, would ask to have it changed.

Which leaves us with three options:
1. He’s one of those who thinks it’s “wink-wink” clever, and therefore an idiot.
2. He’s not aware that wearing that number makes him LOOK like someone who thinks it’s “wink-wink” cleaver…and therefore ALSO an idiot.
3. He’s so obtuse he doesn’t know what it means…nah, that just couldn’t be, he plays pro football. So I guess we’re really left with just those first two.

Not a good sign.

Say what you want about 69, but it’s not that bad of a number. It cannot be turned upside-down, it kind of looks like a Ying Yang symbol (use your imagination), and it’s a multiple of 23 (if you’re into Michael Jordan, Dr. Pepper, or the Jim Carrey movie).

don’t get me started on the playing surface!!!

isn\’t the surface pretty much ok (i.e. natural grass)…just they try to play too many games back-to-back on it, thereby not allowing for proper and necessary maintenance?

and imo guess the drainage isn\’t all that great either…or was that due to flooding rains of biblical proportions last season?

That\’s what is always said but I think it\’s rubbish. I\’m a season ticket holder for Pitt and that field starts to look bad very early on.

I thought it was marching band practices or tournaments that were bad on performance fields. I don\’t really see how a marching band performing with non-studded shoes can tear up a field more than even a single normal play can.

They couldn’t get fitted caps for the all-time All Stars?!

I’m more annoyed that they couldn’t dip into the Cooperstown Collection and come up with era-appropriate hats for the Hall of Famers.

Stick Mike Schmidt in a maroon Phillies cap, Paul Molitor and Robin Yount in the glove-and-ball Brewer logo cap, etc. You’re better than that, MLB.

I thought of that, too (Ozzie with a blue St. Louis cap? Seriously?).

There sure are a lot of white spats-looking spikes at the All-Star game tonight.

Actually, you could probably let the blue St. Louis cap for Ozzie slide, since he did actually wear it in the latter part of his career. The navy and sand colored Padres cap for Tony Gwynn, on the other hand…

At least they gave Gary Carter an old Expos cap…I was wondering how they’d handle that one.

They gave Gary Carter an Expo’s and Met hat, but he’s wearing the Expo hat. Didn’t he want to go into the Hall as a Met? I wonder if it’s a stab at the Mets for their response to his “campaigning” for the managerial job.

And how can you honor HOF pitchers IN NEW YORK and NOT have Tom Seaver??

Carter wanted to go in as a Met, but the cap is up to the Hall of Fame’s discretion…so they placed him in the Hall as an Expo.

Milwaukee Braves, of course. That’s probably a beer logo on the side. It’s what they do at throwback-cap giveaway games. Actually, almost any giveaway cap comes with a beer logo. That’s why they won’t give them to kids.

Maybe this was discussed on here before, but why is Yankees Manager Jo Girardi wearing a black armband? I know last year the Yanks wore them, but I didn’t think they did this year. Is this something new? And if it has been discussed, if someone can remind me please

That’s the same cap he wears at AT&T Park. He’s there with the team all the time, and always in the Giant’s BP cap. Could be an elegant solution, or could be he just likes his regular cap.

Ted Kluszewski went extra-short-sleeved with the Reds.
Deion Sanders went that route in 1997 (the Jackie Robinson 50th anniversary) as a tribute to him (along with knickers and stirrups). Because by rule, sleve lengths must be roughly universal per team, the rest of the team went to the Deion standard, keeping the tribute in tact, but making the road grays look really silly with the sleeve patches on the shoulders.
And of course there is always Sammy Sosa’s elastic cuffs, and Pedro’s extra-roomy sleeves, and how many more examples do you want? I’m out at the moment.

no that works. thanks

I kind of wish they could have kept Three Rivers for football and reconfigured it out of the cement bowl, multi-purpose thing (i.e. a reverse old-Busch Stadium after the Rams moved to the Dome) as a kick-ass, football only stadium.

old-Busch Stadium was not really kick ass, as much as it we reasonably well taken care of and not nearly as bad as it could have been.

And in the Bay Area..we are waiting for Cisco Field for the Oakland Athletic’s of Fremont (that will be the name, count on it) and a stadium for the Niners in SF or Santa Clara and I don’t give a fig where it is just get it done. Have you SEEN Candlestick lately?

It’s a palm/thumb guard/cushion that’s worn over the thumb on his right (bottom) hand while he’s hitting. He was chewing on it all night last night during HRD, too. Pretty unsanitary is you ask me, although definitely not the WORST thing Hamilton has ever put in his body (or so I hear . . .)

Traditionally, the entire coaching staff of the previous year’s World Series participants are at the game. yeah i saw the pic but it is kind of hard to tell. either way it is a red helmet with the away decal on it, something never seen before…

Way to wiggle out of THAT one, Mo! If Uggla was 6′2″ instead of 5′9″ he might have beaten that out!

anyone catch that gatorade commercial that someone (i believe it was johnny o) had posted on here about a month ago…before the ’sponsor’ was known?

you know, the one with the ball girl climbing the outfield wall to snag a wayward foul…

You mean the one that Gatorade asked to have made by a production company, but ended up putting the production company out of business? That ball girl one?

Viral video is only good if it drives business… and clearly someone lost here.

Would you DARE put a squeeze here to get the winning run home?

If the manager had a set on him he would…

Willie Mays wore a Giants cap during tonight’s All-Star festivities with a “G” logo on it. Pretty smart. NY? SF? How do you choose?

I may be wrong, but I think he does that for all public appearances baseball-related.

That’s the same cap he wears at AT&T Park. He’s there with the team all the time, and always in the Giant’s BP cap. Could be an elegant solution, or could be he just likes his regular cap.

Maybe it’s Mays’ way of not appearing to show a preference between the “NY” Giants and the “SF” Giants?

i love this game

Wow . . .I feel MUCH BETTER for Dan Uggla right now. I almost WANT him to get another at bat to hit a homer and win it.

I disagree…

I’m a fan of AL supremacy.

I feel like I’m sitting in a sports bar. Hey Phil, I think it’s your turn to buy the next round . . .

Brandz said:

Make no mistake about it, me too (especially in the, right now, unlikely event that the Yanks make it to the World Series). But I’m also a BIG fan of a good story.

I know some people were against making the all-star game decide home field, but I hope those people are convinced now that it is a good thing. look at the emotion of the players and the fans. it has the drama of a playoff game. maybe it is the production making it look that way, but regardless this is entertaining stuff.

Again Joe Buck with the “No position players” comment. Why does it matter?

Okay, so with a tie looming as a distinct possibility now, would home field simply revert to the team with the best record?

this round’s with me…

btw…looks like tito is bout outta players, while clint seems to have some bullets left…

allan s…don’t you DARE stop this game

I agree, good stories are great for the game. But like you said, the only way this story ends happy is if the yanks win the ’ship!

The NL forgot to “Wagner-proof” their lead.

(The term “Wagner-proof” c/o Mike Lupica.)
As in:
“When the Mets took the lead from 5-3 to 7-3 against the Giants on Thursday afternoon, my friend Dan Graziano from the Star-Ledger said they were just trying to “Wagner proof” the game.”

Is it me or did the strike zone just get narrower?

that may be true, but the giants pretty much laid down and died on their own that series

they just showed ludwick on deck it is definitely a cool flo helmet

I GOT IT!! If it’s a tie, Hall of Famer Home Run Derby to decide Home Field.

how many innings do they have to play before it ends in a tie?

hopefully paul saw that video of mercer playing in center with the memorials in center field!

by the way i love how they just showed bobby mercer running between the monuments chasing a ball in right field

aj said:

Don’t think there’s a minimum. In 2002, they just ran out of pitchers. The AL is almost to that point now. Just Sherrill and Kazmir (who the Rays would rather NOT see pitch) left (assuming Soria won’t pitch more than an inning)

aj said:

A lot of people rag on Joe Morgan. Am I the only one who is diven nuts by Tim McCarver? Listen carefully sometime, he is painfully NL-biased. I’m not a pro-AL by any means. I just noticed it years ago, and he reaffims my opinion every time I hear him.

Are Ian Kinsler’s shoes patterned after the Texas state flag? Uppers are blue and it looks like the heel/sole have the same red/white/star variation as the flagAre those his regular spikes or a special ASG version?

i don’t think we can draw any conclusions

holy shit!

how about russell martin for MVP?

Forget what I asked earlier about why having an extra bench player matters. Trying to score a catcher from 2nd base on a sharp single up the middle in a tie game is NOT A GOOD SITUATION, EVER!

Help me, please. Why is Joe (or is it Jack) Buck making a big deal about the AL being out of position players? Last I checked Yankee Stadium is an American League park, they’re using the DH. It’s not like Francona’s going to have to pinch hit for a pitcher.
What am I missing?

They couldn’t pinch run for Navarro would have likely helped them win the game.
They couldn’t pinch run for navarro, which would have won the game.

uggla with a grand slam

Interesting note about the All-Star Game tonight in regards to Oakland Athletics pitcher Justin Duchscherer. This marks the first time all season that Duke has appeared in a game in a home white uniform. He prefers the new black home alternate and has chosen to wear that for every home start but one (he was forced to wear the A’s alternate green jersey for a ‘go green’ promotion). Also, the A’s 40 Years patch was replaced by the ASG patch.

See . . Uggla coming up with the bases loaded . . .I KNEW this would happen!

well that’s the reason i have yet to become a member because i am from south louisiana and an lsu fan so i would want my card in their colors. with that said i don’t like lsu’s purple jerseys in any sport and i am glad they wear white at home in football and most often wear gold in baseball. but as far as a color scheme i think the purple and gold look really good together

Hope no post-game fireworks display planned. Gonna piss off the neighbors.

Interesting, but I somehow doubt that the curfew rules if they still exist apply in an exhibition. Worse comes to worse, it’s a tie (again).

I’m still lobbying for Hall-of-Famer Home Run Derby to break the tie. Someone wake up Ralph Kiner!

THAT’S why they had Josh Groban in the 7th. But technically, Dr. Tynan wouldn’t be needed until the middle of the 16th (you know . . 9 + 7)

one can only hope tynan comes out!

I’m glad Joe Buck is on board with my idea of lettin g the Hall of Famers decide this if it’s tied.

WAKE UP BOB FELLER!!!

Miggy’s ‘Houston’ looked like “Houiston” when he was batting thought that was pretty funny..I didn’t think teams put the full letter underneath the buttons as well as on top?

Grady Sizemore was not a starter and now has 5 plate appearances. I love this game . . .

i think no matter what happens this game will be on the top of this list…

well, here comes uggla’s umpteenth shot at redemption.

i think the real uni watch story is the Ludwig helmet and theory behind it.

Don’t you all go away now. THe night is still young out here in the west…

I don’t know what was up with the Cards helmets. Pujols was wearing a Cool-Flo road helmet, and Ludwick was wearing a home cool-flo helmet with the road decal, as previously mentioned. The Cardinals don’t have Cool-Flo helmets so I’m not sure what exactly was going on. I was hiping that they would never resort to earing them…but it may have come to that.

Hey guys -

I need to pick a number for my adult league baseball team, and of course I’m looking for something aesthetically pleasing (or not, perhaps something that’s more of an oddity). I’m currently leaning towards 62. Thoughts?

Ugh. What are you, a pulling guard? Anything higher than 49 is a football number. (Unless it’s spring training.)

Personally, I just recently joined an adult baseball league after a five-year absence from the game, and I went with #65. There are a couple of deep-rooted reasons behind it, however.

1. I’ve had a 5 in my number for the majority of my baseball life…5, 15, 25, 35, and 50 were all worn at one point or another. If a 5 was available, I took it.

2. The person who inspired me to play once again (I stopped after college because of a combo of a chronically-bad shoulder and a desire to get my actual career going) came down with a serious illness while I was getting back in game-shape. Her favorite number is 13, so 5 (my number) x 13 (her number) = 65…so it’s a subtle nod to her, while keeping the 5-in-the-uni-number thing.

3. This last reason came about by coincidence; I didn’t even realize it until after the fact…when you multiply the two numbers together, 6×5=30…which was my uniform number in college.

Basically, I say that you should go for whatever number makes you feel comfortable…and if it has a deeper meaning for you, even better.

Post-Script: Not that it matters too much, but that appears to be Ryan Dempster’s son.

Getty/Yahoo should be embarrassed identifying Cubs slugger Zambrano at the home run derby as A. Ramirez.

——While Zambrano is a good hiting pitcher, maybe you meant Cubs “pitcher”, not slugger?? Speaking of being embarassed…

Not embarrassed at all. You have obviously never read Zambrano’s multitude of quotes about hitting and his career long love of the long-ball. He would have participated in the derby if the league and his team let him.

Not sure if this has been talked about before or not but I found it pretty neat.

many coaches do that so they can be seen from the sidelines.
and ive seen some offensive coaches wear different jackets than defensive coaches

It usually extends beyond just coaches. I’ve seen:
Offensive Coaches in one color
Defensive Coaches in another color
Equipment managers (who usually need to be found in a hurry) in a third color
Trainers in a fourth

And of course, the Red Hat (TV timeout coordinator) is in red
