Several weeks back I did an entry about the 1971 book This Great Game. That led several readers to suggest that I track down a pair of football books that were published around that same time: The First 50 Years (which I’ll get to another day) and The Other League, which chronicles the story of the AFL. As you might expect, there are some excellent photographic details worth examining. Let’s take a look:
• Excellent view here of the “San Diego All-America City” crest that the Chargers wore on their helmets in 1963.
• What’s that little nub just above the nose bumper? Ditto here and, I think, here.
• Nice shot here of George Blanda with a pocket pouch and no chinstrap. Also, note that the “1″ on his chest doesn’t match the one on his sleeve.
• Speaking of chest/sleeve inconsistencies, check out Joe Namath here.
• Look at this — holy moly! According to the book, that photo is from 1963, which was the only year that the Raiders wore silver helmets and gold numbers, but I’d never seen that heavy black outlining before. Yeesh.
• Lousy photo quality, but it’s always good see more shots of Denver’s vertically striped socks.
• Here’s something you don’t often see: AFL All-Star Game photos, as seen here and here.
• Lots of interesting shots of officials. In this photo, from 1961, the zebras weren’t even zebras — no stripes, just giant uni numbers. By 1963, they’d gone to the red stripes with no numbers (note the Jets’ original helmet design, too). In that last photo, it looks like the ref, who’s in the background, is wearing a black cap, but apparently it was red, with the AFL logo. The white caps had the logo as well. Anyone know if the AFL officials eventually switched to black stripes? Looks like they might have, based on this late-’60s shot, but it’s tough to be sure. There are also several Super Bowl photos that show officials wearing black sleeves with uni numbers (additional shots here and here). All those shots are from Super Bowls I and II, so those could just be NFL officials — who officiated those early Super Bowls anyway, NFL crews, AFL crews, or a mix? Anyone know if that non-striped black sleeve was an NFL or AFL thing?
• Look at that last photo again and check out the facemask for the Chiefs player who’s facing the camera. Look how the area between the two upper screws (just above the nose bumper) is sort of scooped or scalloped — don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
• At first I thought the “4″ in this photo was a mistake. But apparently that was part of San Diego’s standard uni number font. Not only that, it was also used by the Titans, who kept the font when they became the Jets. Plus the Colts used it back in the 1950s (even on the sleeve). Still looks weird to me.
• Why did Joe Namath have a blank helmet in his first pro game? He was blank-domed on this 1966 SI cover, too (but not on an SI cover that ran a year prior to that).
• Man, the Oilers had some huge-ass rear-helmet numbers.
• I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a prominent belt buckle on a football uniform. Apparently all the Chiefs wore it.
• Love the “CBS Color” sign on the camera.
• And finally, here’s a wide shot of Shea Stadium’s first pro football game. Forty-four years later, I don’t think they’ve ever changed the foul pole or screen.
And there’s plenty more. Want you own copy of this book? Look here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Fascinating tidbit from sporting goods magnate Terry Proctor, who writes: “Did you ever notice the extended flap of knit trim with the off-center double snaps on the A’s waistband? That flap was extended to cover the real belt that was worn underneath. The knit trim that went around the waist on the pants actually was a tunnel loop. A regular belt was worn and that flap covered the belt buckle. The Red Sox also wore this style.” I had never, ever heard this before. … “A New Orleans police officer was suspended — 15 minutes before he was set to retire — for wearing the wrong uniform shirt (with thanks to Chuck Alexander). … Scott Little is obsessed with Starter jackets, among other things, and sent along photos of 16 jacket tags plus a few other tags and labels of interest. Check out the full slideshow here. … Japan has unveiled its wrestling and table tennis uniforms for the Olympics (with thanks to, of course, Jeremy Brahm). … While we’re at it, Thomas Tunner (who modestly claims to have “both the largest sports collection and the largest wardrobe”) sent along this. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The roster of catchers who’ve worn brimless helmets (which had previously included Duke Sims, Ron Hodges, Dave Valle, Bob Boone, Jim Sundberg, Carlton Fisk, and Pudge Rodriguez) has a new member: Jeff Torborg. … The Reds’ camo jerseys have stirred up a bit of controversy and commentary (with thanks to Mark Fightmaster). … If you go to this audio link and scroll ahead to the 38-minute mark, you’ll hear swimmer W. Hodding Carter discussing the new LZR swimsuit. Interestingly, he says it makes you feel “like a superhero,” yet another furtherance of the trope I identified in this site’s very first entry (with thanks to Morris Levin). … Not exactly a surprise, but Citi Field will feature lots of pricey food options. … “I saw this sign at the New Era shop in Manhattan,” writes Steve Flack. “So all those ugly-ass ‘fashion’ 5950s are born out of a request from Spike Lee.” … I know Sandy Alomar Jr. was the first catcher to wear knee-saver pads, but did he also wear them while batting? Check out this shot of him from the 1997 All-Star Game — never seen that before. … Nike is being sued by an inventor who claims the Evil Empire Swooshkateers stole his patented cap design. Oddly, the guy wore a Nike cap for his photo accompanying the article (with thanks to David McGee). … Interesting note from Jeremy Gooch, who writes: “No photo, but during the 1992-93 preseason and at least part of the regular season, Tom Rathman of the 49ers wore a ‘No Fear’ sticker on the back of his helmet, right above the American Flag. It looked kind of like this, minus the circle, and it was red instead of black.” Anyone know more about this? … According to the “Clubhouse Confidential” section on this page, the Brewers’ equipment manager had ordered a uniform for C.C. Sabathia a week prior to the trade, because he was worried about getting caught short during the Independence Day weekend (nice find by Rob McCallum). … You probably know Babe Ruth was briefly a Dodgers coach after his retirement. But did you know he wore No. 35 (here’s another shot)? Dan Cichalski took both of those screen grabs from last weekend’s debut installment of Baseball’s Glory Days, a new weekly series running on FSN (or on MSG-Plus in some markets, including New York) that I’ve been meaning to mention. The series is basically the second coming of HBO’s When It Was a Game productions: Lots of home movie footage, a bit of endearingly over-sentimental voiceovers, and some talking heads waxing poetic. New episodes will debut each Sunday night, and I think it’s a 12-week run. Great stuff, and highly recommended. … Also from Dan: The Lakewood BlueClaws are holding a Springsteen promo on July 25th, and will be wearing this design for the occasion. … Super-cool Charlie Gehringer military baseball uni up for auction here. … Charlie Samuels strikes again: Earlier this season, Mets outfielder Nick Evans wore No. 6. Then they sent him down, acquired Trot Nixon, and gave him No. 6. Then Nixon went on the DL, where he remains today, and now they’ve recalled Evans and given him 6 again, which means they now have two players on the roster with the same number. Is that even allowed? … Speaking of the Mets, Bryan Heaton notes that neither Jose Reyes nor recent call-up Argenis Reyes is wearing a first initial. … Elton Brand posed with a throwback Sixers uni yesterday, and Jake Driver points out that they apparently did something similar for Josh Smith. Not sure what this all portends, but I’m looking into it. … Bernie Langer was at last night’s Phils/Cards game in Philly and says Brendan Ryan’s striped stirrups (shown there from another date) caused quite a stir. “People all around me were saying, ‘Look at that! Look at those socks!’ A dad behind me kept on yelling to his little kids, ‘Look at that guy’s socks! Look at them!’” … Nice timeline of Houston Cougars logos here (with thanks to Corey Buck). … Ryan Connelly notes that the NHL09 trailer shows the Panthers wearing their pre-Edge design — odd. … The Red Sox were still wearing the stars/stripes caps yesterday. … Remember how we discussed that the “NBA” icon on the Celtics’ championship banner is sometimes solid, sometimes not? Mario Fontana took a tour of the arena two nights ago and asked about that. “I was surprised to get an answer,” he writes. “If the Celtics won the championship that year on the road, it is represented with a dark (filled in) circle, representing their green jerseys. If they win it at home it’s a white circle, representing the home jersey. I thought this was pretty neat.” … Get this: The Brewers put their “B” logo on the pitching mound each game, but a reader who didn’t give his/her name says, “For the recent Negro Leagues tribute game, they put a dark blue generic M back there, to try and complete the effect.” Yeah, nothing says authentic Negro Leagues like a field decoration that nobody thought of until a few years ago. … Speedo is having trouble producing enough LZR swimsuits to keep up with demand. That link came from Jeremy Brahm, who says he also found a Japanese article that says “regular swimmers cannot get the LZR until the Fall because the priority is getting enough suits for the Olympic swimmers.” … Jeremy also sent some pics from the Haarlem Baseball Week in Holland, a six-team tournament for college level teams. Interestingly, the Netherlands Antilles are using two Braves “A” logos on their jerseys and caps (which is an improvement over what they used to wear). … A bunch of Thurman Munson memorabilia is going up for auction.

The unique numbers-on-sleeves unis were only for the first two Supes. I believe that it was the 1968 season that the combined leagues went to similar unis for the officials.
The officials were a mix for all the NFL-AFL Super Bowl games.

Hate to burst the bubble, but this can’t be right. The 1976 banner has a white circle, but Boston won Game 6 (the clincher) at Phoenix. Same for the 1974 (won Game 7 at Milwaukee) and 1969 (won Game 7 at Los Angeles) titles. Yet, the circle is green for 1981, which Boston did win at Houston (Game 6). And the Celtics won the 1984 (Game 7 vs. L.A.) and 1986 (Game 6 vs. Houston) titles at home and those banner circles are white. So the inconsistency remains.

The Celtics banner logo explanation (winning at home or on the road) does not work for 1969 - the banner has a ‘white’ (home) logo, but the Celtics won Game 7 in Los Angeles that year. That was the year Jack Kent Cooke put balloons in the Forum anticipating a Lakers win.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the use of the Braves “A” logo is the result of so many people in the Netherlands Antilles (which includes the island of Curacao) following the Braves. The success of Andruw Jones instantly made the Braves the team to follow in that part of the world. Their little league program has exploded recently, and those kids often list Andruw as their favorite big leaguer.

There was a question yesterday about the similar W used by the Nationals and Walgreens - namely, which had it first?
According to the company’s website, Walgreens has been using a version of the pretzel W since the early 1900s (even before they added the “s” on the end of their name). The current W logo appears to date from the 1950s, based on context (although the photo itself isn’t dated).
So it would appear that the drugstore has a earlier claim on the logo.

While the Negro League game was the only one I didn’t go to that weekend, I watched on TV and the Brewers “M” on the back of the mound was black to match the black unis. As far as I’ve seen, they don’t do dark blue — they actually avoid black chalk markings because they don’t show up well. The first night of the Corey Hart “heart” they had the Brewers.com in black and it didn’t play well even in stadium, much less on TV. Last night it was in white.

Love that book. Have had it for years. Since it was published, actually.
And I’ve been to the site where this comes from.

Has SO many errors it’s close to worthless, esp. on early AFL unis. The Titans graphic, for example…well, I don’t even know where to start.
And no, Raiders never wore gold numbers. Well not with that uni. The had gold numbers only in ‘62, but still had black helmets, etc. Change to silver and black came in ‘63, and was complete.
I mention the following here to see if anyone can help: I’ve been paying attention to AFL since the beginning, and to this day have never found a color game acton photo from an Oakland home game prior to 1963, actually from ANY Raider game, home OR road. Not a one.
Likewise the Titans. No color game photos til after became the Jets.
And only one color photo from a Bronco game in ‘60 or ‘61.
Anyone have any?

Regarding Joe Namath… I remember back probably in the early seventies when the Jets played a pre-season game in Houston, I think, and Namath’s game jersey was stolen from the locker room before the game. He wore a plain white practice jersey in its place. (In later years I think the Jets often wore plain white lightweight practice jerseys in exhibition games.) Houston is a short hop from Louisiana, where Vida Blue, the A’s pitcher was from…a small town in Western Louisiana. About a year later I saw a magazine spread and interview with Vida Blue and guess what he was wearing? A white Joe Namath Jets game jersey. Keep in mind this was in the day when you couldn’t just walk into any store and buy an actual NFL game jersey…that was a few years ahead. I always wondered how Blue had gotten that jersey.

Regarding “ugly ass” fashion caps: I think you have to make a disinction here — all caps that are called “fashion caps” are not equally atrocious. While of course there are those genuine atrocities, such as those with the giant or off-center logos, a simple one-for-one colour replacement on a cap can look just fine.
I have no big problem with Spike Lee’s solid red Yankee cap. As long as one solid colour replaces another, I am OK with it.
And the coolest thing about this sort of colour replacement is that it can allow fans with multiple or even divided loyalties to make interesting statments. For example, I have seen a SF Giants cap with the A’s green crown and yellow bill, presumably for a bi-partisan Bay Area fan. And a green Yankee or Met cap is a natural, if the wearer is also a Jet fan.
So, for me, those fashion caps which feature only solid-colour replacement (and nothing else) are not, by their nature, necessarily ugly, and can in fact sometimes look pretty dignified.

Can’t give specific instances, but every once in a while back then a team would go through preseason without their helmet decals, then add them for season opener. Jets, for sure. I always figured maybe was an issue with them peeling or something. Or, they didn’t want to bother until they knew which guys were gonna make the team, lol. In one instance with Jets I think was year of change from the orignal green aircraft logo of the previous year to the first version of the football logo they still use today.
Jets wore plain white jerseys in preseason a couple different years.

So did Chargers.
Eagles (in ‘61, I think) had preseason white jerseys dif. from anything they ever wore in reg. season. Had kelly northwestern style sleeve stripes and fairly large TV numbers on top of shoulders. Reg. season was two kelly stripes widley separated and very small TVs on sleeves.

Man, you got that right. Part of the problem, I think, is that current mascot iconology fashion favors a “fierce” look, not a “cute” look. Everybody’s trying to look tough, and growly, and menacing. Sometimes that leads to patently absurd designs — like the Chops — or my current favorite, the Louisville cardinal with grimacing teeth. A toothy bird, fer krissake! One of the reason the Cleveland Brownie is so appealing is precisely because he doesn’t try to menace anybody.

And so there is the answer to yesterday’s question- right there in black and green…
“In 1974 and 1975 the Mets were kind enough to let the Yankees play in their home while Yankee Stadium was under reconstruction. After a support beam in Yankee Stadium collapsed in early April 1998, the Yankees had to play a home game in Shea Stadium on an emergency basis until repairs could be made.
From 1964 until 1983 the New York Jets played football in Shea Stadium. In addition, the New York Giants were tenants of the Jets in 1975, awaiting completion of Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands of East Rutherford, New Jersey. No other stadium has ever served as home to two baseball teams and two pro football teams at the same time.”

Those are Sox players from ‘59. The guy in the shorts is Jungle Jim Rivera.

That’s because the Astrodome was essentially Shea with a roof. Very similar designs.

The dome, for comparison

Has anybody noticed that the Angels first base coach is wearing a batting helmet with an ear flap? Is he the only coach wearing an ear flap?
#64 by josh on 07.10.08 12:16 pm |
The other logo that comes to mind is the Orioles cartoon bird (which I love). The bird was cute as could be, but the guys wearing it were menacing. As I mentioned last week, when the Orioles had the cartoon bird as their logo is the only time that they were truly threatening.

potential new Oklahoma City jersey on the right

That’s Alfredo Griffin, who I think may have been the first MLB player to wear a double-flapped helmet.

Isn’t it sad that another green color scheme will bite the dust? first the rays, now the sonics. i’m sick of blue and red

Wow…Iowa Chops.
Couldn’t they be the Iowa Swine?
I mean, a sports team named after a cut of meat?

That know-it-all attitude comes from hanging around LaRussa. And as we all know, it was Tony LaRussa who invented baseball.

You said it! I’m getting sick of all shades of blue combined with red.
Well the Sonics are not dead, who knows when they’ll assemble a team back in Seattle again. Hopefully next time for once they will finally have a good jersey design in their history.

I think the best part is the random person in the rear of the pic on the right side who snuck in the shot.
#73 by Pretty Boy Paulie on 07.10.08 12:53 pm |
Oh God! I’m not liking that design. I like the idea of black and gold, thats a pretty classy color scheme……but I guess it’s safe to say that we should expect a FUGLY Gold alternate uni.

Brendan Ryan! Looking GOOD!!!! I’m glad he has the ACTUAL stir-up sock and not the faux joints that are printed on. As a die-hard Cubs fan I can say that I’m JEALOUS my Cubbies don’t have striped socks.

Who? I don’t see anyone. Just a big hat with no bend in the brim.

Anybody notice Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez has started to wear high socks for the first time in his career? It all started about a week ago after he returned from the Dominican Republic where his wife was giving birth. Did his lovely wife give him a few uni pointers? It looks great especially with the blue cleats.

I didnt’ mean just the two shown here, but all those I’ve seen on that site.
On these two:
RAIDERS…road numbers were silver, not gold, and either this year or the next (I’d have to check which it was) road socks had NW style striping with center stripe silver and outside stripes white. Home socks plain black.
Now, the TITANS: Hmmm…let’s see.
If is ‘61, wrong color gold. Was Steeler gold, not old gold.
Had shoulder loops on road, too. Gold center, blue outside. Some players had TV’s, some didn’t (go figure). Tri-color trim at sleeve ends.
If 60, colors okay, but no shoulder loops, no stripes on socks. TV’s home and road. Pants two fairly wide navy stripes, no white on pants at all.
In both years, most players wore a goofy old-style helmet harking back to “leather helmet” look, white padding around rim of face and those white face masks with a single vertical center bar beween the two horizontal. Or a plain single bar.
(I’ve emailed Paul several photos of the Titans two dif. unis)

The perfect marriage of awful name with awful logo. Seriously, that’s just an epic embarrassment.
Also, this animal head logo thing needs to stop immediately.

Prolog was put out by the NFL in the early 70s as a preseason annual. The title was a play on the programs at that time, known as PRO! (with an exclamation point). They did it for about 5-6 years, with a week by week look at the previous season, stats, upcoming possible record breakers for the new season, changes in stadiums, and so on. They dumped it and the PRO! programs with an attempt to make PRO! a monthly magazine - which went about as well as NFL Network is going.

New Era created a line this year with the same design idea…It is called the “Twisted” line:

These caps have been discussed at length on the blog and unfortunately, the majority of comments regard them very poorly!
#85 by LarenR on 07.10.08 1:36 pm |
Of course, even the single color caps can go terribly awry. The worst atrocity I have seen in the stands was a Giants cap in Dodger blue! Why would they ever produce such a thing? And what kind of an idiot was it who actually bought it and wore it a Candlestick Park?!

Without even reading the accompanying article, I can tell you that they are a limited edition pair of the Nike Hyperdunk, which I posted a few nights ago.
This is a special makeup of the shoe that all of the Nike-endorsed Olympic hoops players will be wearing sparing only Lebron and Carmelo.
The first ad for this shoe was the assinine video of Kobe and his shadow, Ronnie Turiaf jumping over the Aston Martin.

I was SO P’d off when I heard only 350 pairs of the Back to the Future Hyperdunks were being produced. They only released at UNDFTD in Santa Monica. They could have still made them limited and released them at Niketowns in all the major cities. I shake my head in disappointment at Nike.

More info & pics on football @ Shea. I like how they put a huge sign on the back of the scoreboard saying “Shea Stadium home of the Jets”

Bryan,
Living here outside of ST. Louis, most fans are SICK of LaRussa’s antics…he “lucked” with the 2006 WS win…I was hoping at that time, that LaRussa’s “steroid-stained” ass would have been run out of time…!!!
