Today is Canada Day, which means my Canadian pal Liz is hosting a cookout in her yard this evening. I plan to make Nanaimo bars for the occasion, whoop-whoop.
Canada Day also means the Blue Jays will be wearing special holiday jerseys — or they would be, if they were playing at home. But for the second consecutive year, they’re spending July 1st on the road. Of course, it’s not as though the holiday jerseys from previous years have been things of beauty, as you can see here, here, here, here, and here (all those pages courtesy of Bill Henderson’s awesome jersey reference CD), but c’mon, how hard can it be for MLB to schedule their one Canadian team to be at home on the summer’s biggest Canadian holiday? Lame.
New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Uni Watch News Ticker: “There are lots of hockey fight videos on YouTube,” says Alan Kreit. “But this one is unique because of the officials’ jerseys — note the advertising.” … Patrick Murray found a site devoted to Cubs scorecard cover art, including more killer Otis Shepard designs (see also here, here, here, here, and here), plus a separate page devoted to Cubbie pocket schedules. … Remember the basketball cape from that old Rawlings catalog I surveyed last week? I’ve never seen anyone wear a hoops cape, but Jim McGlynn has: “Growing up in Indiana, I remember watching the University of Evansville Purple Aces play at Butler University. The Aces wore sleeved basketball jerseys, but more importantly, they wore capes during warm up. The capes went down to their knees and hung from their shoulders. Wish I had pictures of that.” Me, too. … There’s a high school softball player in Virginia who calls herself Kate the Great. How do I know? Because C.T. Wykes sent me a photo of her glove. … Larry Wiederecht sent along a nice photo of authentic Phillies stirrups. … Fascinating note from Brandon Davis, who writes: “After reading your articles about the Cubs trademark logo, I inspected an A’s ’68 throwback jersey that I just bought at a team charity auction. Look closely at the Majestic logo — it includes the trademark symbol embroidered into the design. (it doesn’t photograph well, but it’s clearly visible when looking at it). I’ll check some of my other Majestic jerseys to see if I can pinpoint when Majestic may have started doing this.” If anyone else wants to check their game-used jerseys and report on their findings, feel free. … Awesome story out of Milwaukee about a fan who showed up in a full retro uniform and got invited onto the field during BP. For details, scroll down to the “Earning a Spot” section on this page (with thanks to Nicole Haase). … I got outbid on this — really nice, no?

I have to agree with MLB’s lameness on not giving Toronto a home date for Canada Day. Like you said, it’s ONE day of the year for ONE team in Canada. Would that be that difficult? Especially in light of all the other concessions they make in the schedule (are two NYY/NYM and CHC/CWS series REALLY necessary?)
That all being said, would there be any reason the Jays couldn’t just wear a special uni today even though they are on the road? I have to say, I’ve always enjoyed the Canada Day unis, at least with the prior generation uniform (I really like that red cap with the blue bill and tried unsuccessfully to obtain one). I know they aren’t the most visually appealing things but I like the uniqueness of them doing for one game a year.
Also, I think Jason Bay and any other Canadian-born players should be permitted to wear a Canadian flag patch on their jersey or cap on 7/1.

Ok, I remember a joke from around the early 90s some comedian told about going to football games and seeing the guys in full uniform–pads and all–and would say “Does that moron actually expect to be called into the game at some point?” Seeing how it actually got that Brewers fan on the field for BP, I can see more people going out of their way to put together full uniforms just to see if they can get a chance to go on the field. Since there is not any images from the BP, I can only guess the guy actually had a baseball player’s build, and not one of a beer drinker…

No WONDER they are charging $34 a cap … They had to do more than update the color of the overall cap when they went from Blue to Red.

Both of those links are to blue caps
The red hat was a mistake to even have its picture released. Yes, you’ll see them show up on the sites, but when they do, they’ll get quickly changed over to the blue version. The only one being sold on MLBshop is the blue one, and that link in yesterday’s blog over the red cap on Eastbay changed to a blue cap by the end of the day.
As I said in the comments late last night, this is just further disgusting proof of the American flag becoming a corportate logo rather than a national symbol.
By the way, what a complete slap in the face to Canada by MLB to not only have Toronto not playing in Canada on Canada Day, but to also force them to wear stars and stripes 3 days later… Unreal

#32 by Kek on 07.01.08 10:37 am |
No, I just gave those two as examples. The regional rivalries are fine, but my point was that interleague play is not done right as far as scheduling. Quite frankly, it should be a rotation of one division’s team playing another team’s division’s team, period. The world won’t end if we have a year that the Mets and Yanks don’t play each other. In fact, it would make those series that much more special when the schedule rolls around.
If MLB can find the dates to schedule those home and homes, they could have the decency to the fans north of the border to schedule the Jays at home over Canada Day. (I would bet when the CFL had its ill-fated experiment with teams in the states, that they were smart enough to have the Canadian teams stay at home).
MLB should also schedule one home double header for every team. I think it would be a neat throwback to give this to the fans and have them know it ahead of time rather than just on rainouts.
You Mets fans should appreciate this. Growing up with WOR as one of my superstations, I remember fondly watching Banner Day. Didn’t they do that between games of a scheduled doubleheader? Is that something they still do at Shea?
(Also, what was the name of that little kid they used in the promo commercials? They’d put him inside a gym bag to show how big it was)

dougie, you’ve got some great ideas, but sadly, the geniuses who run mlb will never implement them…and i, too, could do without having to play the spankees 6 games a year…it’s not really that big of a deal anymore (maybe this year with the closing of shea and ysI)…

I went to the Rays/Red Sox game last night. If anyone is looking for bandwagon fans, come to St. Pete. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as they’ve never had anything to root for before.
In the monthly Rays news magazine there is an interview with Scott Kazmir with questions from the fans. Obviously the fan must of been a UniWatcher and Kazmir GETS IT.
Question: “If you had to choose who has the best team uniform other than the Rays, who would it be?”
Scott Kazmir: “Hmm…. probably the old yellow, orange, and red Astros uniforms. Those were crazy.”
#37 by Kenny on 07.01.08 11:06 am |
There are some points in there I agree with you, but as far as the regional rivalries, I like the two series…Cubs/Sox here in Chicago is absolutely huge…especially this year with the two being in 1st
Interleague is great, especially with the opportunity to wear some great throwbacks to past WS match-ups
And yes, if the Sox played the NL East, they should play everyone in the NL East
The doubleheader would be really cool, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon

Yeah, I kno
Yeah, I know it’s tough when you have unbalanced numbers of teams in both the central and west divisions in the leagues, but I believe that was the original intent of interleague play. Then, I think everyone got caught up in the regional rivalries and it got changed. I do agree with the idea of it being OK this year with NY because of it being the final seasons of Yankee and Shea Stadium but I wouldn’t mind if that true scheduling concept was followed.
While I’m not complaining about the Yanks coming to play the Pirates, it took them long enough to come to Pittsburgh while the Pirates traveled to Yankee Stadium twice prior. On top of that, the Pirates’ regional rivlary, the Indians, hasn’t been on the schedule since ‘06.
Not saying I didn’t enjoy seeing the Yanks but I would rather have seen the Tribe than the Rays (even if TB is the hottest team in the MLB right now)
And teams are playing way too much in their own divisions. I’d rather see the Pirates play the Phillies or Mets one more series than have to see Chicago, Milwaukee or Houston over and over again.
#43 by LarenR on 07.01.08 11:22 am |

This doesn’t have anything to do with any of todays topics, but they do have some relevance to past discussions…
First, in regards to the pillbox hats worn by NL teams in 1976 (see UniWatch of Aug. 1, 2007) I stumbled across a picture of Sparky Anderson arguing with an umpire, and the ump is wearing a pillbox cap. Never seen that before!
Secondly, I’m sure there has been discussion about teams other than the Red Sox wearing the “Red Sox font” on thier unis (1960s A’s, 1970s Angels, 1930s Yankees, etc.). But I wasn’t aware the Dodgers did after their move to Los Angeles. From the same book as the Sparky pic, comes this gem of Sandy Koufax. And it wasn’t just on the front, it was on the back as well.
So based on the overlapping of Dodger Stadium and Sandy’s career, this pic had to have been from 1962 to 1965. When exactly? Who knows…

I was watching parts of the DET/MIN game last night and wondered something about the jerseys. The tiger’s horrible (in my opinon) away unis have ‘Detroit’ across the chest with two buttons close together above it. Assuming they do this so no buttons are in the name on the chest. But when the Tigers are at home, they have the same button placement even though their awesome home uni only has a old english D on the side of the chest, nothing across the middle. But still wear the buttons like they have something in the middel. Is this a league wide thing, or do some teams have different button schemes for home/away jerseys?
If this has been touched on before I apologize.

White Sox fans would bitch about a sunny day after two weeks of rain.
In that spirit, the ESPN article erroneously states that the Sox put names on the uniforms in 1961. It was actually 1960, according to Bill Veeck’s autobiography Veeck As In Wreck.
He wrote that he was inspired by watching the Sox on TV during the pennant race of 1959 and seeing the players’ names projected on the screen. He wondered why fans watching on TV should have an advantage that fans in attendance at the park didn’t have.

Regarding the Jays playing away from home on Canada: they actually have requested to play away from home the last few years on Canada day: so much of Toronto takes off to their cottages this weekend that attendance on Canada was terrible.

Actually, teams have to send MLB a request to have a certain date at home. Boston requests every year to have a home game on the day of the Boston Marathon. It shouldn’t be MLB’s job to track each cities traditions and holidays and schedule accordingly.
The MLB schedule is done by hand each year by an independent group of people. Their job is hard enough without 30 teams sending in requests for home games on certain days.
Toronto didn’t send a request for a home game on July 1st so it wasn’t guaranteed.
I love bashing Selig as much as the next person, but this one is on Toronto

I was reading the Cubs maibag and the below question sounded familiar. Charles J. must be a UniWatch reader…
Question –> Like many others, I loved seeing the Cubs in the 1948 “throwback” uniforms. But was a mistake made on the caps? I’m rather sure in ‘48 that the cap was Cubbie blue (matching the great striped sox) with a solid red “C,” such as the one sold by MLB as the Cubs’ 1938-56 Cooperstown cap. Am I right or wrong?
– Charles J., Tyler, Texas
Answer –> Yes, the caps were wrong. I’m told there was a problem getting a perfect match to the ‘48 caps.
