When I think track and field, I think fancy clothes. The latest fabrics and cuts, joined together in an enviable mix of cutting edge … wait … is that guy wearing a tux? Umm … OK. That’s Paul Litchfield, by the way. And he’s happy about his jump in the prelims at the US Olympic Trials. Here’s more fanciness from the Trials: Shalane Flanagan’s bling, rivaled only by Kara Goucher’s shininess (you have to look close. It’s there, trust me.). — Bryan

Good morning, uni watchers. Hate to change the subject, but I had a long day yesterday and didn’t get a chance to chime in. I still can’t get over the Mets wearing blue caps with the road grays yesterday, something that has not happened since 1997 (except for a “throwback” game in Tampa in 1999, where they wore flannel grays with the blue caps). When I finally say the highlights hours later, I was just thrilled, happier about this than the fact that they had won the game.
As many of you have heard/read me harp on over quite a long time, this is far and away the best uniform combination the Mets have, and have ever had (even the black drop-shadow becomes tolerable). Although the hideous two-tone cap did not become the official road cap until 2001, they wore it with the road grays EVERY time in 1998, 99 and 2000.
I hope this is not just a one-time thing (i.e., they just didn’t feel like changing socks and undershirts when they got back to Shea), that SOMEONE in the Mets organization saw this and said, “Wow! Look how good this looks! We should wear this all the time!” Or even better: “For next year, when Citi Field opens, let’s DITCH THE BLACK altogether!”
I guess we’ll find out the next time they go on the road. As last night’s game no doubt reminded us, the Mets have a remarkable way of giving us brief, fleeting hope that things will change for the better, and then crushing that hope with long stretches of misery and incompetence. Time will tell.

Track and Field just lost another viewer. I’m tired of all the marble bag action. It’s distracting with all the bouncing back and forth, especially in HD/Slo-mo.
Wear some shorts for cryin out loud or just get it over with and run fuggin naked.

It looked more maroon on TV, but I guess it doesn’t really match Minnesota’s color scheme, as they have a much more yellow accent. Kinda looks like Virginia Tech, though. Probably no connection to anything.

Dany Heatley is playing in a charity golf outing today at my course in Wisconsin, and I am going to try and ask him what he thinks about the new Reebok Edge jerseys/sweaters. The GM of the golf course played hockey with Dany at the University of Wisconsin and roomed together for a year, so I am sure I will be able to talk candidly with him for a minute or two. I will let you all know what he said tonight or tomorrow.

I’m not sure if this was the first occurrence or not, but last night, the Pirates wore their white uniforms instead of their “Friday” red uniforms. I remember reading a while ago that they want to get rid of them next year. Did they get really smart and decide to ditch them early?

IMO, The best uniform related news from Eugene is that athletes are not wearing bib numbers but their bibs with names. That’s one small positive step. In this day of microseconds, I don’t understand why elite athletes have to wear anything that has to be secured with a safety pin. Why can’t the track and field uniforms be printed with a name and number on the singlet like all other sports?

I dont know if anyone already saw but I was at the Indans vs. Giants game two nights ago and it was Omars first game back in Cleveland since he was traded. It was also probably his last so in order to honor the tribe he wore red spikes with his giants uniforms like the Indians of the late 90s did(cant find a pic tho) I thought that it was a PRETTY COOL tribute.

I know we talked about this a lot when it first was announced about Toronto but I thought I’d revisit it: while the powder blues at home isn’t accurate, I think it’s more done for the fans. I’m guessing many fans enjoyed the look so the Jays might think it’s neat to let the fans actually see it in person on a Friday.
I know the Brewers do it, but with a white home look. However, that look is very unique. I don’t think the Jays’ white look from that era, complete with that cap, would really be enough to set it off as something different. The powder blue definitely does.
I think for one day a week, it’s not that big of a deal. The powder blue is going to clash with every away team in the AL or NL so it’s not as if you’re going to have trouble telling the teams apart.

Quick question regarding the throwback night in the Steel City. I couldn’t help but notice that the Crawfords jersey just says Crawfordon the front. I can’t tell in the picture above if the historical jerseys said Crawfords or Crawford, anybody know? And also I thought that it was the home teams responsibility to provide the throwbacks for both teams. If that is true, why did the pirates provide the Rays with different batting helmets, but still use their current helmets?
#57 by mtjaws on 06.29.08 2:54 am |
I thought the Rays nailed it (again!) with the uniforms tonight. Looked great, especially those red flaps and jersey. The Pirates looked good too.
I wonder if they didn’t get Crawford helmets because of a color/stripe issue. Anyone know if the real helmets were like the caps?

I’m going to go out on limb and venture there weren’t official Crawford helmets. Weren’t the Crawfords playing long before helmets were common, let alone the rule? What year were these supposed to be, out of curiosity?
#59 by James Craven on 06.29.08 6:54 am |
Agreed on that point. In addition, “Crawford” was the name of Gus Greenlee’s night club when he owned the team, hence the single name. More publicity for his nightclub, which by modern MLB standards would be verbotten, even with Interim Commissioner for Life “This Bud’s For You” Selig’s watch.
