Okay, so I know I’ve been obsessing over buttons quite a bit lately, and I also know some of you think I write too often about the Mets. But this thing with Pedro Martinez has officially crossed over into freaky-deeky territory.
Quickly, the backstory: As many of you are aware, when Pedro made his very abbreviated first start of the year on April 1st in Florida, his second button was unfastened. Two months, two days, and one calf injury later, he returned to the mound in San Francisco — with his second button undone yet again.
Martinez’s third appearance of the year was eight days ago in San Diego. I didn’t watch that game, but he seemed to be fully buttoned, at least judging by this photo. So I chalked up the other two instances to bizarre coincidence and figured that was the end of that.
Pedro returned to the mound yesterday. And guess what returned with him: the phantom second button. Like, whiskey tango foxtrot?!
That got me wondering about Pedro’s previous start — the one in San Diego where the photo had shown him fully buttoned. So last night I checked out some video from that game, and look what I found. As it turns out, Martinez was fully buttoned in the 1st inning but reverted to his new signature style in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th (after which he was removed from the game, presumably for remedial button-fastening lessons).
So Pedro is now four-for-four with this new look of his. Is it some sort of ritualistic superstition? A secret shout-out to Lefty Grove or Leo Durocher? (Pedro is rather lippy, after all.) More to the point, what shall we call this style — a hole-in-two? The jersey unshored? Petey’s problem? Post your suggested terminology in today’s comments and I’ll give a free Uni Watch membership (or, for existing members, a new card design) to the person who comes up with the one I like best.
Something else about Pedro yesterday, by the way: no Father’s Day ribbon. Lots of blue ribbons and armbands elsewhere throughout MLB, though. I don’t know about you, but my prostate feels better already.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Weekend throwback scorecard: Awesome to see the cartoon Oriole cap logo, and even nicer that they went to the trouble of making throwback helmets — except they made them wrong (the white panel should look like this). Interesting to see that they kept the Jim McKay memorial armband. And look — no MLB logo on the back of the jerseys or the caps! … Meanwhile, over in the Bay Area (where the Giants had the MLB mark on jerseys but not on caps), Barry Zito had something poking out of his waistband. I was hoping they’d go with the orange sanitaries, but no such luck. … And in Cleveland, the Indians went with belted pants when an elastic waistband was called for. This was the weekend’s only throwback game featuring both teams in retro attire, as the Padres stuck to their regular batting helmets and used belted pants and radially arched nameplates (with no MLB logo) when they should have gone with striped waistbands and a vertical arch. Major bonus points, however, for including the 1978 All-Star Game patch. Jeff Mouldin was at the game and has dozens of additional pics (including several of Heath Bell’s brown-on-gold stirrups) here. … More on the Padres’ uniforms, from Mike Hersh: “I noticed most of the Padres didn’t like their brown undershirts with the mock-turtleneck collar. Most of the guys looked like they used scissors to cut the neckline. Edgar Gonzalez did the worst job of it. And Edgar’s younger brother, Adrian, decided to say screw it and just wore a white undershirt.” … Want to make your own vintage socks? Okay, you probably don’t, but this piece is still pretty interesting (with thanks to Joe Hilseberg, who also pointed me toward two old-school “base ball” uniform sources, here and here). … “Hens and Hogs Night” in Toledo last Thursday, with the Mud Hens wearing Harley-inspired jerseys (courtesy of Wayne Koehler). … Civil War regiment? I was at the Pirates-O’s game on Friday and I cannot tell you how disappointed I was the Bucs did not wear any kind of throwback….there was also a pregame ceremony with some of the players from the 1979 World Series (which they were honoring) and of course they wheeled out Earl Weaver (wearing a modern O’s jersey), and also a player (I forget who) who played for both the Pirates and the O’s. They had this guy wear a new Pirates jersey…without giving him a black shirt to wear underneath. It looked pretty hokey to se someone out thre with the vest and a light colored shirt on….oh well.

I didn’t know if I was watching the USA vs Barbados soccer match or an episode of saved by the bell from like 1994 yesterday. Barbados had the brightest jerseys on. I don’t think I have ever said this but, it looked worse on a Hi-def tv than a normal one.

during sunday’s tigers-dodgers game, i noticed that one of the dodger’s relievers (either beimel or broxton,(i don’t recall)) had what appeared to be a temporary tattoo of the (non-pabst) blue ribbon on the side of his neck. unfortunately, i cannot find any photos online to verify this.

Even though my Tribe messed up on the belts it was still amazing to see the old Chief Wahoo logo in the batting stance, I can still remember they had a huge giant one on top of old Municipal Stadium.

MLB has sold the patches online for quite a while. I bought the Brewers “M on Wisconsin” patch online 4 years ago. I also bought a friend the Cubs alternate logo (Cub standing in C) patch for his jersey to make it look more authentic 3 years ago.

I was also at the game and was pissed off the whole time at those helmets! And by the fact that they didn’t wear the orange pullovers…guess they want to recycle these unis for the 83 TBTC in July.
2 side notes - Luke Scott went high cuffs for 5 innings then switched to low pants. My buddy took pics for me and has yet to email them. And Earl was wearing the throwback jersey and not the modern one…

The Orioles excuse was that they were celebrating the ‘79 season and their AL Championship, since they lost the WS to the Pirates. That is why they did not have them participate, even though playing them for the first time since then was the inspiration for the event.

Someone mentioned yesterday the problem with the Orioles’ helmet decals could have been in relating that older design to the newer helmets. I won’t pretend to know for sure, but it sounds plausible.
Oh, and if anyone wants to bitch about the powder blue ribbon temporary tattoos, et al, from MLB’s Father’s Day, please read my post #58 from yesterday.

Very distrubing that the Cubs were forbidden from wearing jerseys with zippers (something that\’s hardly ancient considering that the Phillies had them until around 1990; surely there are many people still in baseball who wore them, such as Larry Bowa).
Why does the league get to have any say in this matter? It\’s not like the Cubs were doing anything outlandish — they wanted to wear an exact replica of a uniform that they actually once wore on the field. It was OK then, but not now?

Regarding the Lenze vs. IS soccer kits: All the players have is IS logo on their shorts. While it is strange to have one player with a different jersey, it does not appear to be an individual sponsor.

I’ve always preferred to see Hull city in black and amber stripes but the Umbro 07/08 effort was a nice kit and of course it will now be associated with the Wembley game.

Turkey v Czech Rep yesterday: Turkey’s goalie was ejected towards the end and the team had no subs left, so one of the outfielders put his jersey on inside-out and played keeper for a few minutes.

The biggest problem wasn’t colors, they are the colors of the country so changing them wouldn’t be right, or even the uni’s template. It was how huge all of the jerseys were. A strange look indeed. But I’m sure a lot of that is due to their extermly low national team budget, and having to go to cheap local suppliers.

It has nothing to do with the column…and it may be a “uniform” stretch…but at the US Open Playoffs (a full 18 holes today) Tiger and Rocco are wearing nearly identical “uniforms.”
Both have black pants, red shirt, black vest, and black hat.
Of course Tigers has the swoosh on every bit and Roccos has other sponsers…

1. Maybe they are trying to promote a local apparel maker? They are not going to get to the world cup finals, so there is not a big chance of world wide exposure, therefore it does not make sense for one of the goliaths to sponsor them. Most of thier games are against other small island nations, that have thier own brands. So it seems that a local supplier woudl benefit much more in this situation.
2. Shouldn’t we congratulate Barbados for not “selling out” to Nike / Adidas / Puma / Umbro? They were not the best looking uniforms, but they displayed the national colors, and they looked like a team. I am sure if and when they do get adidas / nike unifoms, we will tear the design to shreds, and count how many logos we can see…

I was pretty surprised too. They’re playing 2 ESPN televised games against the US, and no big company thought to spend the thousand bucks to set them up with well fitting kits. I spent have the game tryingto figure out what brand the uni’s were. Although some people here think that me not finding a brand logo is a good thing, I personally don’t care to much, maybe 2 per uni…..but that’s another issue all together.

I’m all for local guys getting the money over the sports “giants”. But, at the same time, I’m sure the team would have loved to get some free, expensive uni’s for once. They mentioned several times during the telecast that many of the starting players have full-time jobs and that playing soccer was more of a hobby as they have no league in Barbados, and this might well be the biggest game they ever play in. But who knows, maybe the huge jersey look is all the rage there, and I’m pitching a fit over nothing. I’ve been wrong before, I just don’t keep track of those times.

Still, I don\’t think a major brand like adidas wants its image to be publicly linked to a team like Barbados, right? That\’s a reason big companies always try to sponsor winners, or at least decent teams. If Barbados loses 8-0, it\’s also adidas losing 8-0.
Don\’t know… it\’s probably because the games were played in a stadium that is more like a school gym with some stands.

I’m not as grumpy or locked-in-the-past as I sound. I don’t advocate a return to shorts that make players look their auditioning for a Nair commerical, but that uni—-the cut of the lovely girls basketball circa 1949 skirt, not the colors, etc.—-really does look stupid.
The “Manny in His Jammies” look comes to George Mason basketball.
Not to mention they make that guy look about 5′4″.

I was at the draft in ‘96 when Ogden was drafted; the Ravens did not have a uniform or logo yet. The signage at the MSG Theatre had a plain rectangular navy blue and white logo, with BALTIMORE above RAVENS in sans-serif lettering, the former blue-on-white and the latter white-on-blue. They started training camp that year without uniforms and logos as well; they wore plain navy and white jerseys, and white helmets with a single navy stripe. One of their players, I can’t remember who, was quoted as saying, “We’ve out-Penn-Stated Penn State.”

Zito has a bit of drawstring peaking out above the wasteband. look carefully and you’ll see a ridge running through the middle white stripe of the band. that’s the drawstring channel. lot’s of double-snap elastic wasteband uni pants have the drawstring for insurance in case something causes the snaps to pop open (head-first slide,etc)

Also, the drawstring holds the pants securely in position where you want them around your hips/waist, because it doesn’t give when you move. If you rely on the waistband itself for that, you get a waistband so tight that everyone starts looking like Tommy Lasorda.
And not just for sansabelts. I have a pair of current Braves home pants and, even with belt loops, they still have a drawstring…so you don’t have to cinch the belt so tight you can’t breathe.
In additon to the drawstring, most times you can tell the best of the pro model sansabelt pants because they have three snaps at the waist. The retail versions almost all had just two.

Ok. Without reading everything (I know, mortal sin), I proffer this: The Twins were wearing eye blue for yesterday’s game. I couldn’t get a good screen grab of it, and I can’t find a pic on-line, but I think it was part of the cancer-prevention promotion thing. If anybody knows differently, please enlighten me.

I don’t know why, but prototype stuff like this is some of my absolute favorite stuff that gets posted here. I’ve always loved speculating about logo and uni designs, and also because I can’t draw anything better than stick figures, so I’ve got respect for the artists involved. That being said, like others mentioned, I can’t imagine, move or not, that they’d stop being called the Nets. Classic examples being the Lakers in LA and the Jazz in Utah. If those region specific names didn’t change, than the NEts certainly isn’t.

1995 Carolina Panthers patch. One version said Inaugural Season, another version said Inaugural Season Clemson University. When was the Clemson version used? (and is the Clemson version hard to find?)
1996 Atlanta Olympics basketball jerseys. Were the name & numbers sewn or screen printed?
1996-97 Sonics throwback jerseys. Were the name & numbers sewn or screen printed? Also, I’m looking for pics of the players wearing these uniforms, specifically Shawn Kemp.
1994 Georgetown warm up shirt, with all-over African print and HOYAS across the front. I’m trying to find out how these were customized for the players… number, name, or both? And what colors?

That was an unofficial contest run and participated by a group of graphic designers a few years ago. Nothing more than for fun.
The Chiefs entry was mine. Looking back, there’s so much about it that I would have done differently.

Little OT as far as Uni’s and what-not go, but, it could be somewhat related. With Interleague play going on right now, when I see the NL teams vs the AL teams, it makes me play a little game and I try to think back to trades the teams have made between each other. (i.e.- Mets/Angels- Nolan Ryan, Don Rose, Leroy Stanton and Frank Estrada to Angels for Jim Fregosi- 1971) When it was Mets/Rangers, I came up with Gene Clines for Joe Lovitto, not sure of the year. Tomorrow night it’s Pirates @ White Sox- that brings back memories of Richie Zisk and Silvio Martinez to the White Sox for Rich Gossage and Terry Forster, 1976 I believe.
Just something I do when I see Al/NL teams matched up.
