Back when I visited Jeff Fedenko’s house, he showed me this book, which featured lots of great photos and awesome Robert Riger illustrations. I haven’t yet found a reasonably priced copy of the book for myself, but I did track down a copy of its companion volume, Best Players of the Year, 1963, and it has not disappointed. The book is too big to fit properly in my scanner, so I’ve just taken photos of some highlights:
• One of the best things about the book is its cover, with that super-cool striped NFL logo.
• Here’s an awesome illo of two titans of the pre-Super Bowl era, Jim Brown and Sam Huff. Gorgeous. The book’s other notable illustration is this one, which captures essence of mid-century Midwestern football quite nicely.
• This shot suggests that the Cardinals used Dymo Tape helmet labels in 1963. But judging by this shot, the labels were sometimes applied horizontally, sometimes vertically.
• Note to all baseball players: The official’s pants in this shot are absolute perfection.
• Interesting variety of footwear here: spikes on the receiver, a molded sole on the lineman, and Chucks on the quarterback! This was the ’63 NFL Championship Game, which took place in Chicago on December 29th, so a frozen field may have been a factor in the multiplicity of footwear approaches.
• Is it just me, or do the two bars of Johhny U’s facemask look a bit more widely spaced than usual here? Also, note that Alan Ameche (No. 35) had apparently picked up teammate Lenny Moore’s spatting habit.
• We tend to think of the Redskins’ and Cowboys’ uniforms as being fairly timeless. But Washington used to look like this, and Dallas like this (note the wraparound jersey collar, which is examined in much greater depth here). Here they are matched up against each other.
• Love the Yankee Stadium “Sec. 7″ sign here. And speaking of stadia, see the brick facing in the bottom photo here? That’s Wrigley Field.
Want to see more? A not-too-overpriced copy is available here.
Site Note: After a month’s worth of hassles with Google (don’t ask), the internal site-search function has been restored at the top of the right-hand rail. Enjoy.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Cubs and Braves will be wearing 1948 throwbacks today, to mark the 60th anniversary of WGN carrying Cubs games. While it’s the first throwback game at Wrigley, it’s not the first one the Cubs have participated in — remember this Cubs/Chisox game from 1997? … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: A ton of artwork from Sport magazine (which was every bit as important as Sports Illustrated back in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s) has been archived on this site. I haven’t had a chance yet to look through it all, but a quick glance is very promising. More on this soon. … Fascinating article about new sneaker soles made from rice hulls here. … While researching something else, I came across a bunch of interesting images. First, check out this shot of Yaz. What’s on his left calf? And next, my book of Topps baseball cards (which, if you don’t have a copy, I highly recommend) shows two 1973 cards with blank uniforms — look here and here. I’m assuming these were airbrush jobs that were later filled in, especially since I collected the 1973 set as a kid and don’t recall these two oddities. But it’s weird that the incomplete versions would show up in the book. Anyone know more about these? … “Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where I grew up, was the hometown of Negro League first bagger Buck Leonard, known as ‘the black Lou Gehrig,’ and the city has named a youth league in his honor,” writes Cooper Harriss. “The teams are clearly named for Negro League teams, and the uniforms feature Negro League-esque logos, as you can see in this photo gallery.” … A bunch of vintage Oklahoma football helmets are up for auction (with thanks to John Ervin). … Kevin Garnett: big soccer fan? (With thanks to Craig Justice.) … Cool jersey promo upcoming in Detroit (with thanks to Terry Corby). … Andrew Cambour reports that Miami Hurricanes second baseman Jemile Weeks has been wearing his pants low when batting and baserunning and high-cuffed while in the field. “Is that at all common, for a player to prefer one pant length for offense and another for defense?” he asks. Good question. Anyone..? … af2’s Tri-Cities Fever will wear a special “Military Night” uniform on Saturday (with thanks to Stefan Schubert).

These are pictures from Steelers OTAs the other day. http://news.steelers...
They were wearing the yellow helmets yet I haven’t heard that they were going to wear the throwbacks from last year, and furthermore that was a special design for the 75th season which was last year.
Why else would they wear those unless they were going to wear them on the field of play? I recall seeing Bills and Chargers players in throwback helmets in practice in years past to “break them in”.

Thanks for the Redskins pics. That is my absolute favorite football helmet of all time, with the feather running up over the top from the back. I come from an area where “redskin” is actually used as an n-word-equivalent epithet, so I can’t bring myself to cheer for the Skins even though I live in Washington now. But if the Redskins wore that helmet I’d be a fan of the team despite the name.

The Bob Locker baseball card listed in the Ticker confuses me. Removing a logo is one thing, but the number? And the pinstripes? Why? Also, the outfielder on the right side of the photo. What’s the deal with the big red C on his chest? That’s too big to be the normal Cubs logo. And it may just be that photo, but it looks to me like Locker is wearing a helmet on the mound, not a cap.

According to a press release from the Cubs, not only will the teams be wearing 1948 reproduction uniforms, the TV broadcast will be in black & white with very few camer angles, no center field camera, and the guys in the booth will be wearing 1948 clothing. Fans attending the game are encouraged to dress in 1948-style attire. The ballpark music, scorecards, ingame and postgame activities will all harken back to 1948. For the first hour after gates open, Kelly Eisenberg smokey links make a return for $1 a piece and select vendors will sell drinks in the stands for 75 cents…

“super-cool striped NFL logo”
I totally disagree. The gray NFL text is unreadable (and the gray color doesn’t even make sense). Also, the stripes should have started with red on the outside, instead of white, to match the American flag.
This is a case where older/original does not mean better.

I love that Topps book…I have a copy that, back in the mid 90s, I would carry around with me(in a briefcase no less), to baseball games to get autographs in. It always came in handy because no matter who showed up I always had something for them to sign. I imagine I looked funny…a teenager carrying around a briefcase with this giant book inside…but I did have a great time with it. My copy is signed by around 200 players…I retired the book about ten years ago, but still enjoy looking at it very much…

Easy mistake to make, but that’s not Alan Ameche with his shoes taped. Ameche had retired, and the Colts gave his number to J.W. Lockett, a former Cowboy back they’d picked up. And Lockett, I remember from back then, was a “taped shoes guy” during his tenure with the Colts.
Love those “pinhead” helmets on the Bears (Ditka the receiver there, but I ’spose everyone knew that). And, yes, there was all manner of footwear during that title game in Chicago. Remember watching it live (also remember my high school girl friend being pissed cuz I stayed home to watch the game instead of going to some family function of hers. Taking the long view, glad I watched the game).
What else? Oh, yeah, I loved those initial Cowboys “white shoulder” jerseys. There were original and unique at the time. The most similar precursors were the jerseys worn by college boys in Chicago’s annual All-Star Game (NFL champs vs. previous season’s college best at Solider Field late every summer). Also–and this never shows in color photos–but I can tell you it’s true from seeing the Cowboys in person twice back then, the pants had a slighly light blue cast to them. Our seats were pretty close to the field and I stared at them til I was sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Was only them, too, cuz Colts pants, for example, were pure white. Might have been a certain-fabric-in-sunlight thing, but Cowboyos first britches definitely appeared to be the lightest of powder blue.
Now, a couple Helmet Notes. The Redskins feather helmet (and, yes, it’s one of the best) actually debuted during the season, not from the beginning. Came in the last few games of ‘59, I believe it was. I remember because there was a weekly half-hour NFL highlight show (b&w game films) sponsored by Safeco Insurance that I watched faithfully. Suddenly, one week late in the season it was, “What the heck? Redskins plain gold helmets went away! Is that, like a feather or something?”
Likewise with the Steelers black helmet. That appeared very, very late one season, too. One week, yellow-gold. Next week, black.
Safe to say the NFL was a little looser on its properties marketing back then.

The only reason I can think of for the low pants while base running and high pants while in the field is that the playet prefers the extra layer of protection for sliding purposes.
Socks don’t provide much protection against particularly rough base paths… believe me.

Maybe… but I think it’s a “run” in the stirrup sock. He’s not wearing his uniform pants; there’s no stripe down the side, and it looks like there’s “quilting” on his backside. I think those are “sliding” pants worn under the uniform.
Yep, I think that’s a shot of Yaz sittin’ around in his underwear, drinkin’ a beer…
#43 by Charlie on 06.12.08 10:37 am |
Completely agree that the Washington “feather” helmet was a special part of that uniform. The road uniform with the burgundy trim on the shoulders and the dark gold pants was the best look the team ever had.

Don’t think the Sox had a pants stripe in 1975. I have no idea what that bulge might be but it looks like there’s a little adjuster thingie on the dark stripe above it. Hard to tell in B&W, though.

It’s one of what we just to call “pony” cans that Coors (and only Coors, as I recall) made. Little tiny cans of beer. Friends used to bring them back to Minnesota from Colorado ski trips. Couldn’t get Coors here back in the days when this photo was taken.

If a player was going to wear cuffs two different ways, it would make more sense to wear the high cuffs while batting. That was you are less likely to get the low, at the knees pitch called a strike.

Re: Yaz’s bulge
I’m still going with a tin of chew. That photo was definitely taken with a flash (check out the massive shadows to the right of his head and below his left arm) which will reduce contrast in light-colored areas, making the definition of the bulge harder to spot. It’s also just the right size. I don’t, however, think it’s some sort of defect in his sock. If a thread got pulled then both stripes would bend in the same direction, not away from each other. There’s definitely something in there.

I guess my point is: If the Cubs show up today with navy blue sleeves, they will have REALLY done their homework.

I am all for the monochromatic look–especially if that one color is black.

I would like to apologize to the city of Emporia, Virginia for the “pit stain of the world” remark.
It offfended pit stains everywhere.

Two other notes on today’s game:
1. Kids 14 and under who are recruited for seat flipping duty will get four free tickets to a future Cubs game.
2. IIRC, didn’t Fox do a simular stunt involving the Cubs and the Dodgers a few years ago to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first MLB telecast that WGN’s doing today?

I’m actually kind of surprised they don’t play Cubs/Sox mid-week. You’d think the teams (well, the Sox at least) would love some easy sellouts midweek.

I was thinking about the same thing … makes me wonder … could it have been TEN years ago (i.e., marking 50 years)??? I know it was a game at Wrigley Field on Fox, with Chip Carey broadcasting. During each inning, the broadcast of the game progressed in time, going from grainy, far away shots only in the first inning to a (then) modern broadcast for the final inning.
I’m a little disappointed to know the game will be on WGN today. I would think that to show the genuine transition the game has taken over the years, they should move the last 3 innings to Comcast!

You are correct in your recollection - the part that got me was the progression in the on-screen graphics as the game went on, especially the 60’s section when they put the word “REPLAY” on the screen when actually showing a replay - classic

TV, man. TV.
They can put a game on FOX Saturday Baseball and another on ESPN Sunday night if they want. Which they usually do.
Demand is great anyway, but even greater on weekends, which means the clubs can jack up the price of tickets even more. And when they scalp their own tickets, it’s even more lucre.

I’m not. That’s the only way I can see it.

J-Dub, IIRC the game was in 1999, and did commemmorate the first baseball telecast in 1939 between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Phillies at Ebbets Field, so it was the sixtieth anniversary of that first game being broadcast in new York City to be exact.
