Got a really interesting note the other day from reader Matt Frost, who clued me in to a uniform category I hadn’t previously been aware of. Check it out:
I was watching a show about the Highland Games on the Discovery Channel. Tucked in amongst all the kilts was a small bit about the tug of war. Surprisingly, there was a high degree of uni-related detail.
In these photos, you can see that it more or less looks like they’re wearing rugby shirts. But there are some peculiar bits, starting with their boots. In fact, there are actually companies that produce tug of war boots. They look like ice skates with no blades.
Getting back to the shirts, they’re definitely modified. The more basic ones are simply rugby shirts with an extra layer of fabric. The pullers have it under the arm and along the ribs, and the anchorman has it over the shoulder as well. Some of the more hardcore teams, though, have more intense padding. Here it looks like some kind of rubber. A lot of teams seemed to have quilted padding sewn in to the inside of their shirts, but I couldn’t find any images of those.
Faaaaascinating. Remember when they used to tugs of war on The Superstars, or Superteams, or whatever it was? I mainly recall the Steelers tug team, anchored by Ernie Holmes, engaged in a seemingly endless t-o’-w against some other team (probably the Cowboys, but I no longer recall the specifics). Anyway, that’s about the full extent of what I know about this sport. After some very quick research, however, here are a few other things I’ve noticed:
• Here’s a rear view of one of those reinforced panels.
• Most teams have matching socks.
• In addition to outdoor matches, there also appears to be a thriving indoor tug circuit, in which the “field” is a narrow strip. No boots here — looks like specialized sneakers.
• The sport’s youth program could use some uniforms.
And so on. Anyone know more about this sport? Fill us in.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Someone’s trying to have it both ways (with thanks to Ryan Connelly). … Amusing rant here on umpires’ uniform numbers. Not sure how accurate it is, though — it claims that No. 2 has been retired twice (for A.L. ump Nick Bremigan and N.L. ump Jocko Conlan), but as Jeffrey Soderberg points out, that number is currently worn by Jerry Crawford. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: People are always asking me where they can buy stirrups. Here are some nice ones on eBay. … Here’s another shot of Omar Vizquel wearing No. 42 during his rookie year — and also sporting a double-flap helmet! … A gem from the photo archives? Nope — it’s the Rickwood Classic, which took place just the other day. Details here, and additional pics here (big thanks to Mark McCollister). … A team logo on the back of the mound is bad enough, but Dustin Pomprowitz reports that the Brewers have taken it a step further. See that light-colored lettering? Here’s a closer look. Should only be a matter of time before we see real advertising there, at which point we will have officially reached a low point in human civilization. … As you may also have noticed in that last photo, the Braves wore their alternate caps yesterday. First time they’ve worn them with something other than the solid-blue alternate jersey. … Ah, product placement (with thanks to Jason Dulin). … Eagle-eyed Joe Hilseberg notes that Orioles coach John Shelby appears to have an upside-down 8 on the front of his jersey. … Bob Andrews attended a Texans season ticketholder event last night and got lots of cool uni-related pics. “They apparently are really promoting the secondary logo,” he writes. “It was worn by everyone.” … Sleeve observation from Mike DeCaro, who writes: “I was watching a game between the White Sox and Indians on May 28th, when I noticed that Rafael Bentancourt seemed to have a wide discrepancy in the length of his sleeves on his jersey. His pitching sleeve looked a few inches shorter than the other. The best pictrure I could find was from spring training.” … Chaz Norenberg notes that the MLB logo is missing from the back of Josh Hamilton’s jersey. … Good article here about the Mariners’ Marineros jerseys, which will be worn tomorrow. … Thanks to everyone who came out to KGB last night — good times. … And big birthday wishes to Milesofsparks, who makes my world stripey and happy. Just FYI, you’ve got one more present waiting for you, which you’ll get this evening.

There are no longer National League and American League umpires; they were combined to create Major League umpires a few years ago. Maybe that’s why the number 2 was considered to be available for Jerry Crawford to use.

I just read this interesting tidbit.
Former NBA star Chris Morris (11 yrs in the league) is also notorious for writing the words “Trade Me” on his game sneakers after he wanted to be traded away from the New Jersey.

I guess that its really called a secondary logo. I used to see it sparingly in their first season then it seemed to disappear. Late last season they began selling shirts in thier team store with the logo and as I saw last night they have it all over the place. It was even painted on the concrete in the plaza outside the south end of Reliant. The apparel concession stands had signs that read ‘Get your secondary logo merchandice here’.
I took a bunch of pictures in the locker room but mostly guys had shoes and tee shirts hanging. Not knowing much about shoes I didn’t bother posting them, maybe I will later.
NFL rookies sharing lockers is fairly common from what the coaches told me. I asked a couple years ago when I saw then #1 pick Mario Williams had a free agent rookie lockermate.
All in all its a fun evening put on by the team. All the players we saw were all very cordial. Let me know if you want to see what an NFL dining room looks like.

I got to go to that same Texans season ticket holder event last year. It was held on a Saturday. My brother took a ton of pictures (mostly the same stuff BobA has, it looks like). The team basically gave reasonably open access to everything. You couldn’t get within 8 feet of the lockers or training tables or go into the actually equipment area, but everything else was open. #43 by Jim on 05.30.08 11:24 am |
Sometimes I think teams wear their ‘alts’ more than their actual home/away uniforms. Once again, I hate alternates and third jerseys. Stupid.
#44 by MPowers1634 on 05.30.08 11:31 am |
I actually like alternates. Thay have to be managed properly though. The NFL does it the right way in allowing each team to wear their alt only a handful of times per season…exhibition included.
I realize in a 162 game regular season, that would roughly equate to 8 to 10 games, which is defintely not what the White Sox are doing.
#45 by Jets/Mets Fan in Chicagoland on 05.30.08 11:37 am |
Couldn’t be a superstition thing, could it?
Go on a win streak by re-shuffling the line-up, have one bad game wearing the road grays, switch to the black alt on the road, start another win streak….
coincidence? I think not ;-)
#46 by Jim on 05.30.08 11:38 am |
Don’t mind a ‘throwback’ once in a while. It’s cool to revisit a teams past. But that should only be once a year, max.
I feel like in 100 years, Uniwatchers are going to research what the teams wore in this era and see so many uni combinations for one team in one year. It is starting to get ridiculas. I guess that’s what happans when a team’s marketing dept gets a say in what the teams wear.

The Tigers used their alternate “Tiger-Through-The-D” alternate logo on road caps from 1994 through 1997. Could that be what you’re thinking of?
#55 by Duckstyle187 on 05.30.08 12:32 pm |
That’s what my fiancee said during last nighst games. Bu they’ve lost just as frequntly in that jersey as in the others. Meaning it’s gotta be one of the players or coaches just talking the others into it because of personal preference. Perosnally, I blame it all on Swisher, boy ain’t right….at the plate either.
#56 by Adam on 05.30.08 12:32 pm |
It really isn’t a new thing, though. If you take a look at the 70s, there’s a few teams that had all sorts of strange combos (and, IMO, were even worse, because they sometimes also mixed and matched solid color pants). I doubt it’s ever going away, either - there will always be some teams who want lots of options.
I don’t get why it bothers people so much - would it be better if (in the White Sox case), they named the black tops the official “Home” AND “Road” uniform, and made the pinstripes the “Home Alternate” and the gray tops the “Road Alternates”? It wouldn’t change anything, but at least then people couldn’t complain that “they wear the alternates too much!”
#57 by Walaitis on 05.30.08 12:34 pm |
One could say that they should either control the ‘alts’ … or delete them.
#58 by Adam on 05.30.08 12:35 pm |
In past years, it was usually a streak thing, but this year they seem to almost always wear black. I think it’s a “pitcher gets to choose” thing. I don’t mind it, but it has gotten to the point where it looks weird to see them in anything other than the Black.

Walaitis, you are brilliant, man. Keep it up–you actually made me laugh out loud.
The reason for ump numbers:

I need to know where Laz Diaz is at all times!
(that’s beyond my ability for html coding).
By the way, Boston fans, you guys are nuts–and I mean that in the best sense. I went there over Labor Day–er, Memorial Day Weekend, and there was Boston gear everywhere. Red Sox, Celtics, and Pats–not so much the Bruins. Of course, it pained me as a MN fan because I saw Garnett, Big Papi, and Moss jerseys everywhere.
I am going back in August, hopefully to see a game at Fenway and root for the opposition. That should be a blast!

JMFinC, second funniest post of the day. I *think* I know who it is, and you all would, too, if you paid really close attention to Paul’s posts!
#108 by Joe on 05.30.08 4:23 pm |
Paul and other NY uniwatchers,
I’ll be in Brooklyn next weekend for a bachelor party. One of the locals has been suggested that we start at new gourmet beer bar in Brooklyn called Beer Table. After dinner, the next stop was suggested to be The Brooklyn Inn bar.
I’m from out of town. Anybody know these places?
(And, please, keep it classy on the bachelor party comments.)
Thanks.

Gracias….
Of course, if one might be inclined to Google the phrase ‘milesofsparks’ one might find a MySpace page of a Brooklyn lass…..
All hypotetically, of course, we UW-ers have no time for such shenanigans
#110 by Minna H. on 05.30.08 4:31 pm |
JMFinC, that’s cheating! And we Uni-Watchers are above such perfidy. Besides, there isn’t much info there, anyway (I don’t have an account). It’s all in Paul’s own words–all you have to do is find the hidden treasure.
By the way, Boston fans, Garnett in green still looks strange to this MN gal.
#111 by Jets/Mets Fan in Chicagoland on 05.30.08 4:37 pm |
“perfidy”?
Here’s your quarter
#112 by Walaitis on 05.30.08 4:43 pm |
Perfidy? Didn’t she win Survivor (blogging … watching reality TV … Oh my gosh. They’re right!)
#113 by Minna H. on 05.30.08 4:43 pm |
JMFinC, hey, if you can use ’shenanigans’, I can use ‘perfidy’! And you owe me a dollar–I ain’t that cheap!
By the way, I have a dilemma. Wang (for the Yankees) is pitching against the Twins (my hometown team). Wang is from Taiwan (where my parents are from), and every time he wins, the stock market in Taiwan goes up. Every time he loses, it goes down. I hate the Yanks, but I always root for Wang to win.
So, for whom do I root in this match-up? The Twins, of course! And I like their unis better, too. Heresy, I know, but I neever did like pinstripes.
#114 by Ricko on 05.30.08 4:45 pm |
I thought the word was “perfididity”
#115 by Mike Engle on 05.30.08 4:45 pm |
So if in said match-up, the Yanks were away, you’d root for them, as they would be pinstripe-less?
#116 by Minna H. on 05.30.08 4:45 pm |
Walaitis, I think you’re thinking of her evil twin sister, Pernicious. Or perhaps the prissy one, Persnickety.
I don’t watch reality shows, so I’m just making fun of them, naturally.
#117 by Jets/Mets Fan in Chicagoland on 05.30.08 4:48 pm |
Far be it for me to cast aspersions on your un-cheap-ness….my grandfather always used to refer to the more exotic words in the English language as “25 cent words”, hence my comment.
BTW- exactly how cheap are you? ;-)
#118 by Minna H. on 05.30.08 4:51 pm |
Mike Engle, nope. I hate the Yankees, regardless, but I will root for Wang when he’s not pitching against the Twins.
Oh, Boston fans–the other thing that cracked me up is all the ‘official’ whatever of the Red Sox. My favorite? Wise–the official Potato Chip and Cheez Doodle sponsor of the World Champion Boston Red Sox.
Snicker.
#119 by Jets/Mets Fan in Chicagoland on 05.30.08 4:53 pm |
Thank you for not saying that she’s pulling for Wang

#120 by Minna H. on 05.30.08 4:54 pm |
JMFinC, I can be persuaded with tickets to a local game and a hot dog. And a program. And a pop (soda for the non-Midwesterners). And a signed game-worn jersey. And, and, and…so you see, I really am not cheap!

Sure it’s not about uniforms, but after being down 8-0 after three innings, then winning 10-9 … wow.
Sorry, my friends in Colorado. I feel your pain. Believe me.

I’m just hoping Wang doesn’t get yanked prematurely.

Trade him to Red Sox. Get him an endorsement deal with that cheese doodle company.
Then he can be the “Official Red Sox Cheese Wang Doodle.”
#128 by MikeR on 05.30.08 6:46 pm |
Makes sense to me. It would be a waste of resources for a team to build a few dozen extra lockers for players who aren’t going to be with the team for more than a few weeks.

#137 by Patrick on 05.30.08 10:00 pm |
Why is it that every online pic of the Braves wearing the all-blue cap is an aerial shot?! Were all the regular broadcast cameras broken and they had to call in the Goodyear blimp? To make this uni-related, I do like that cap.
#138 by Brendan on 05.30.08 10:01 pm |
BTW, those are great uniforms. None of adidas’s stupid crap shows up (it’s there, but you can only see it in person), they didn’t try to convince the DFB to change thir logo, and it has the stars in the proper place (unlike Italy’s new logo and jerseys), and I love the idea of the horizontal chest stripes.
The only problem is that I feel the chest stripes should be of equal thickness, just like Germany’s flag, instead of the fat black with the thin red and yellow.

The Gold “C” stands out for the Roman numeral “C”, which is 100. At least I hope so.
There, I have had my Cliff Clavin from Cheers minute of a little knowledge that may or may not be correct.
Let’s all be happy that the “C” wasn’t done in “Vegas Gold”, the worst replacement color for teams that should be wearing Old Gold in the annuls of any sport uniform color.
#142 by David on 05.30.08 10:54 pm |
Rajon Rondo is definitely wearing his headband on upside down. Poor ol’ Jerry West is head over heels on his head.
That, and Prince Fielder might look worse than Eric Gagne in a baseball uniform.
#143 by Greg V. on 05.30.08 11:04 pm |
Thom Brennaman was doing the Reds’ TV broadcast tonight and he sad the Braves would be wearing the solid blue caps on the road until they lost a game. They lost in 11 innings tonight. The Uniwatch cliffhanger begins…

Yup, keep in mind that the Texans use their regular season home as their training camp. There are about 60 lockers which is more than enough for the team during the season. Why build a room with 80 lockers? Use that space for a terrific players lounge with huge flat panels and video games, nice meeting rooms for individual position units, the biggest and most well equipped workout room I’ve ever seen which includes an office for what must be every member of the training staff, swimming pools, several large in the ground whirlpool and water therapy pools etc, etc.
Some people do nothing but criticize. Sez more about them than the organization. The internet makes everyone a genius, an expert, or humorist. [shrug]

The shirt’s obviously wrinkled. You can’t see the second “B” in “Basketball” either.

where can u buy the white shooting shirt with the gold letters that the celts are wearing?
#148 by JP on 05.31.08 3:19 pm |
I’m sure the players prefer that to going to some tiny college an hour away, where they use D-II and D-III facilities. Let’s see… packing and having my own tiny locker, or keeping everything in the same spot and doubling up in a gorgeous facility?
Besides, being doubled up really reveals a lot about your chances to make the team, doesn’t it?

The braves also wore their alt. caps on friday night as well and the reds wore their alt. jersey on saturday.
