Uni Watch Stirrups of the Week

IMG_4541.JPG

Finally, picture-perfect softball weather here in NYC, so it was time for another visit to the Uni Watch sock drawer. Here’s this week’s installment of my ongoing hosiery project:

This week’s design: I was originally planning to wear these. But look at bottom strap — it’s got the same heavy-gauge stitch as the rest of the stirrup. When I tried them on, they were too thick under my sole — it felt like I had something big and lumpy in my shoes. So I switched to these, which have elasticized understraps.

Ideal for feeling like a member of: Good question. I’ve been unable to match this design with any team on the big league timeline. If I’ve overlooked a historical antecedent, please let me know.

Color-coordination factor: “This’ll be a cinch,” I figured. “I’ve got tons of T-shirts featuring blue and red.” But it turns out that the blue component in most of them is navy, not royal. Fortunately, I came up with one that matched perfectly.

How they looked: Pretty sharp. I liked how the elasticized straps provided a teeny bit of white that peeked out above my shoetops.

How I felt: A bit like Little Boy Blue. Would’ve preferred a white tee with royal and red printing, but whaddaya gonna do. I’ll say this for heavy-knit stirrups: They stay up really nicely. Very low-maintenance.

How I played: The combination of batting ninth in a 12-man lineup (we usually play 12-on-12 and have two players per inning sit out from playing the field) and an opposing pitcher who was throwing BBs (he retired 13 of the last 14) meant that I only came to bat twice, flying out both times. Pfeh. But my team won, and made a nice sprinting catch in LF for the final out.

Thanks to Gabe Rivas, Robert Field, and Kirsten for the photos. I won’t be playing softball this Sunday, so this project will be now go on hiatus until June.

Raffle Results: The winner of the NameFrame raffle is charter member Michael C. Wilson. Thanks to all who entered. More raffles coming soon.

Still More Birthday Stuff: It was nine years ago yesterday that the very first Uni Watch column ran in the now-defunct sports section of The Village Voice. From such humble beginnings, blah-blah-blah, etc., etc. Thanks for making it such a fun ride.

Meanwhile, please join me in wishing feliz cumpleaños to Uni Watch bench coach and birthday boy Bryan Redesmke, who turns — actually, I’m not sure how old he turns today, but I’m very sure I couldn’t run this site without him. Enjoy your day, Bry — hope you get everything you wish for when you blow out the candles.

Friendly Reminder: I’ll be participating in a reading this Thursday night at KGB in the East Village. The evening’s theme is “Design and Food,” and I’ll be examining the evolution of butchery chart design. In addition, Akiko Busch will discuss the aesthetics of her favorite vegetable peeler, and Paola Antonelli will deconstruct the art and science of the pasta shell (sorry, no Milton Glaser after all — he cancelled). Festivities will commence at 7pm.

Uni Watch News Ticker: When the Red Wings moved their “C” and “A” designations to the right side of the jersey this season, we all wondered what would happen if they reached the Stanley Cup Finals. And now we have our answer (with thanks to Louis Capwell, who took those photos during Saturday night’s warm-ups). … Speaking of the NHL, here’s Rob Ullman’s Stanley Cup prediction (which he sent to me on Friday morning, before the first two games had been played). … MLB teams did the American flag patch thing yesterday. I received no reports of any wayward or upside-down flags, so maybe they’re using a better glue this year. … The flags on the Mets’ caps seemed to be positioned too far back, a few inches behind the ear. … Boone Logan didn’t have a flag on his cap, but that’s because he’d moved it to his right sleeve (additional view here, with thanks to Steve Johnston). … Jason Varitek marked the holiday by wearing camouflage catching gear (and also taped his fingers for higher signal-calling visibility). … Best logo ever (well, this week). … Indiana State has new football uniforms (with thanks to Dustin Hall). … Steve Eschenbach took this photo at Yankee Stadium on May 22nd. Anyone know if they routinely fly the Boston flag upside-down, or if it was just a one-time “mistake”? … “I saw something that shocked me on Saturday afternoon,” writes Brendan Tarpey. “While in downtown San Francisco, I saw Thomas DeCoud wearing his own Combine sweatshirt, complete with name and number on the back. Have you ever seen or heard of this before? I can understand if it was for some sort of sponsored appearance, but he just looked like he was going shopping with a friend.” … John Peacock pointed me toward this site, which is devoted to Cap Anson and features some tremendous photos. “Here’s the first picture I’ve ever seen of an 1871 Rockford Forest Citys player in uniform,” says John (who lives in Rockford, so he especially likes that one). “There’s also a great picture of the Chicago Cubs — then the White Stockings — showing players wearing color suit coats with their knickers.” … Cardinals blogger Jeff Scott has noticed an interesting problem: The plackets on the team’s Cool Base jerseys seem to be rather flimsy — so flimsy that it tends to flap or bend back — while the non-Cool Base plackets stay nice and crisp. … Still more about the LZR swimsuit controversy here (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). … Awesome Monday Night Football opening sequence, circa 1973, here (courtesy of Brinke Guthrie). … Scott Dunham notes that Coco Crisp has his real name on his glove. … Scroll down to the next-to-last entry on this Q-and-A page for some interesting info on Brad Ausmus’s mask (with thanks to Ryan Patrick). … According to the back of this card, Dante Bichette had some stirrups issues (good find by Matthew Glover). … Interesting item here: a Reds jersey with an NOB but no uni number (with thanks to Robert Eden).

Someone has to tell Boone Logan that the stars are always supposed to face forward, so that flag should have been on the left sleeve.

I don’t think Homer Bailey ever wore that jersey. He made is big league debut last year, which was the Reds’ first year with the new, no black uniforms. So that must be some kind of promo item or something. Maybe related to him being the team’s top pick a few years back.

loyce?

no wonder he goes by ‘coco’

Scott Dunham notes that Coco Crisp has his real name on his glove.

Actually, Loyce is Coco’s middle name, his first name is Covelli, making this even more interesting.

When the Red Wings moved their “C” and “A” designations to the right side of the jersey this season, we all wondered what would happen if they reached the Stanley Cup Finals. And now we have our answer

I’ve been waiting all weekend to discuss the fact on how stupid the patch looks bunched next to the C and A. For those 3 players they should have moved the patch to the other side. Looks ridiculas.

The Boston flag doesn’t look upside down but the “s” is backwards…

look closely…the “s” is backwards (or upside down), but so is the “t” and the “n”…

it’s upside down

Dante Bichette is one of my most hated baseball players ever. It’s good to have one more legit reason to feel that way.

As previously state, Coco Crisp’s real name is Covelli. Loyce may be his middle name as well, but I think this is a reference to to his father, who’s name is Loyce. When he was first acquired by Boston there were a ton of commercials feature not only Coco, but his father too.

Dante Bichette is one of my most hated baseball players ever. It’s good to have one more legit reason to feel that way.

So now his personal opinion of dislike stirrups is a “legit” reason to hate someone more?

NBC’s NFL ‘73 opener was the best theme ever! They used that well into the early 80’s if I recall.

By the way, who were the Dolphin players suiting up during the opening montage? I recognized only Manny Fernandez and Bob Kuchenburg.

Did my second post get pulled? I didn’t think it was offensive.

If what I’ve seen for the Orioles is any guide, it’s not uncommon for jerseys to be made up with NOB, but no number on the back, for players not expected to make the 25-man roster. It’s much easier to add a number to a jersey than to replace a number.

Happy Memorial Day to all!

The Brad Ausmus’s mask link answered a question for me. Noticed the same with Phillies’s catcher Chris Coste. I thought he was waiting for a custom paint job to be finished. Instead he doesn’t want to get jobbed by MLB.

Having just 3 patches on the other side would look just as bad in my opinion. I personally think that the Wings all should’ve worn the Stanley Cup Finals patch on their shoulders instead of on their chests. That way everybody would look the same and the captains would look as ridiculous as they do now.

I don’t know if they do it all the time, but I was at Saturday’s Yankees game, and the Boston flag was indeed upside down. I just got back to Atlanta yesterday, so I haven’t uploaded pictures yet, but I do indeed have a picture of the upside down Boston flag.

You mean ridiculously awesome?

That’s an awesome MNF intro. I wish someone had the theme circa 1984-85 that showed highlights of previous games in the intro when you entered that “hall of fame” hallway. Also, wish someone could post the cool ESPN Sunday Night Football openings from the late 1980s-early 1990s w/ the computer graphics of the team’s city blended with actual footage (Joe Montana and the Golden Gate Bridge, John Elway and the Rockies, etc.).

I don’t think Homer Bailey ever wore that jersey. He made is big league debut last year, which was the Reds’ first year with the new, no black uniforms. So that must be some kind of promo item or something. Maybe related to him being the team’s top pick a few years back.

The auction does not say that Bailey ever wore the jersey. My uneducated guess is that the team prepared it for a 2006 call-up that never came, and that they left it numberless in anticipation of Bailey picking a number upon his arrival. When Bailey did not receive a call-up, perhaps the jersey was tossed aside and never given a number.

Yeah I said they should move the patch to the shoudler too last week. The rangers did it in ‘94 and it looked good.

I didn’t go, but my co-worker was kind enough to get me one of the bobble-foot give-aways from Sunday’s St. Paul Saints game in honor of Senator Larry Craig’s Minneapolis Airport arrest. See pics here and here.
I’m told the number on the side of the stall is the number for the Saints. Nice touch.

absolutely…and im glad someone feels likewise on bishitte

The Tampa Bay flag in the Yankee Stadium picture is the green model used in previous years not a new flag with the updated color scheme. A new flag must not have made the budget cuts while building a billion dollar stadium.

Y’all have seen my previously posted pics of Memorial Day, however, in my family, the holiday always means NCAA Lax!

There were many Uni-notes of interest from this weeks Final Four and Championship, mainly the Huge numbers worn by the Nike clad schools as well as the incredibly garish all-orange kits that ‘Cuse wore in the semi-final.

However, my question is: Why did “Cuse choose to eradicate this logo after only a few years of usage?

I’m not 100% sure but I think I heard someone say its to differentiate from the NBA Finals. i don’t know if the NBA told them to do so or if they just did it on their own.

Loyce is Coco Crisp’s middle name. He was born Covelli Loyce Crisp, but actually had his first name legally changed to Coco this April. So now is is officially Coco Loyce Crisp.

As soon as I posted the pics, I knew someone, DAMMIT PHIL, would scrutinize some aspect of one or all of the pics.

I’m workin’ on the lawn…We just put in a sprinkler system so this Fall, I will start working on the crabgrass and the rest of the unwanted mess!

As always, thanks, Phil!

That Homer Bailey jersey has to be just a template that the team had made for him, in case he had made his debut pre 2007. They didn’t slap a number on there because they probably didn’t know which one he’d choose (he went on to choose 34).

Yeah, the patches can be moved around to make things less cluttered. If I recall correctly, the Penguins’ Stanley Cup Finals jersey had four patches on it in 91-92. (NHL 75th, Pens 25th, Badger Bob and Stanley Cup). Yet if you find a photo of that jersey, it doesn’t appear that cluttered.

Also to remember that your first pair to baseball stirrups (mine were red with white Northwestern-style stripes; team sponsored by Miracle Mile Shopping Mall at Skippy Field, oldest Little League field west of Chicago, btw) were so thick under your foot you…

a) felt like you were wearing arch supports
b) were about an inch taller (at age 10, this is not a bad thing)

I think that the 25th patch was on the right shoulder. The Stanley cup patch was actually placed on top of the 75th patch on the right chest area.

i saw dallas sartz (former usc linebacker, drafted last year by the redskins) wearing his combine sweatshirt riding his bike to class last year in LA. it seemed funny to me, but apparently some players do wear their combine gear after the combine.

I was and still am a fan of Syracuse sports, aargh, however I LOVED that redesigned logo.

In the 2004 NCAA Lax semi-finals, ‘Cuse broke out their new all-orange unis complete with Orange helmets emblazoned with the pictured, beveled logo!

Mike(y) Powell lit the final four on fire and they won the National Championship. The next year, the basketball team utilized the logo on their shorts as well as the wordmark on their jerseys.

I remember visting my brother when he was going to schol at Illinois, and we saw Frank Williams wearing his McDonald’s All American jersey in line at Jimmy John’s. I just remembered thinking that since he wasn’t about to make it on an NBA roster any time soon, that thing ought to be under glass on his wall.

Damn it, Ricko…

i did write for WGN’s “The Bozo Show” in the mid 1990’s, though…

btw (this coming under the “must continue to give our flounder good-natured shit” dictum), I notice Phil contines to eschew a shoeshine.

Maybe it’s a Bowery Boys kinda thing…
“Batting ninth, playing left field, Paul ‘Satch’ Lucas.”

i didn’t see that in the FAQ, although mr. lukas did update it recently…

nay, your choice of colorful metaphor notwithstanding, i see nothing even worth commenting upon regarding ‘our flounder’ and his sartorial taste, save for the obama shirt, on which i have even less to say

do, however, feel free to espouse your own commentary on said softballer’s unitardation

heh…bowery boys…

Thank you, Slip, for being so illucidations on that subject

Here’s that story about the Tinley Park Little League:

As I said, MLB Properties are a bunch of anal retentive jerks for something like this…

I am really, really confused. Back in the middle ages when I played Little League ball, I was on the Giants and the uniforms looked a heck of a lot like the SF Giants. Little Leagues have been using MLB names and likenesses for eons. Why is this just now coming up? And, why is it this one league?

http://www.nbsurfdaw...

Perhaps, if they placed the S behind the U, the U wouldn’t resemble a J.

The only problem is that the S representing Syracuse, should be the prominant character as opposed to the University U.

Graphics people, correct me if I’m wrong!

can someone explain the soccer cleats (Adidas Copa Mudial) on the softball player with the blue and red stirrups?

i thought that was the NEW YORK giants, rick ;)

Well, Rick in Cedar Park, it’s all about the almighty green stuff…the again, leave it to grownups in suits to deny kids (even if it’s in knockoff uniforms) to dream their dreams and play for the Cubs or White Sox…

Combine those with sweatpants!

Sweatpants, we talkin’ bout sweatpants!

Maybe it’s that “Old Tyme Baseball”

Precisely. And now, somehow, MLB owns the generic team “giants” in any context relating to baseball whatsoever?

Figure they’ll sue LSU, Auburn, Missouri and others soon over use of “Tigers”?

oops:

also, I have been noticing a very disturbing trend of logo creep on college/junior hockey players the past couple of years. seems like manufacturers are putting their logos on hockey socks. hopefully this disease does not spread to the NHL.

Nike’s slogan for the Big Brown line should be:

Just glue it.

Too bad Little League can’t just jerk MLB’s chain by changing a letter or two…name teams, say…

COBS
YANKERS
MURINERS
REG SOX
WHINE SOX
TAGERS
PHILLUPS
MUTS
ANGLES
GRUNTS
DOGGERS
RADS

…and whatever else anyone here can concoct.

The point being, when MLB sues again cuz, “You’re making us look bad, holding us up to ridicule in the eyes of kids,” Little League can say, “Well, we wanted to hold you up as an honor in the eyes of kids…but you wouldn’t let us.”

(ba dum bum)

It’s already in international hockey by showing up on the World Championships recently. Only thing I can find is Canada, and it’s the team logo, not a sponser. So I am guessing it will show up in the NHL sometime in the future. Which blows. I think the only thing holding it up is Bettman has to come up with how much he’ll charge for the ad space. :) I hate Bettman.

dream?

more like a nightmare

I think the stirrups might be from an early 1900s Pittsburgh Pirates uniform. The video game MLB The Show 08 lets you pick that as one of the uniforms.

I’m sorry but im going to have to side with the MLB on this one. They didnt care that the little league was using the NAMES of the MLB but they cared about the jerseys. Did you see those things? They are spot on. And its not like the jerseys were donated to these kids. At some point those jerseys had to be paid for. And therefore the person making those jerseys was making money. No matter the use, if someone is making money by selling MLB jerseys and its not the MLB I think its fair of the MLB to pursue the matter.

Because MLB has come to the conclusion that alienating their potential future stars while protecting their right to be greedy is a good thing.

Of course, this could lead into a discussion on “but if they let the little leaguers do it, than it would be legal for ANYONE to use team names on their stuff …” … yeah, that’s right … I’m sure that’s the last thing MLB needs - more people paying attention to thier team identities. We wouldn’t want any of that. For those who feel that way, there could always be a “penny a year” license agreement, so MLB can keep track of how names are used, but not push away what should be their core audience.

After college (and before going “corporate”) I worked at a seafood place in Annapolis, MD (this is right around 2000). One night I was walking through the lobby and noticed a tall, bulky guy wearing a sweatshirt for the 1992 Pro Bowl. It had a football in the middle, with the NFC logo in the middle of the football. It didn’t look like a souvenier sweatshirt…more like a practice sweatshirt…as I got closer I realized he was Mark Rypien. I did find it odd that he was wearing the Pro Bowl sweatshirt from the year he went…but you know what. If I was the Super Bowl MVP and went to the Pro Bowl…F*** IT! I’d wear the damn thing too!

Read article again. Clearly says MLB DID claim to own the names as a matter of “logo interpretation”.

Had all tjey contested was logo use, I’d agree with you 100%, no doubt about it. LL should have to buy licensed gear. A trademark is a trademark.

But how can they have the gonads to claim they own the words Orioles or Giant or Tigers or Marlin just becuase used in a baseball context?

Well, somehow the NFL owns “Super Bowl” and “Super Sunday.”

Go figure.

Always envisioned someone at LucasFilms getting the court ruling regarding SDI and saying,

“Whaddya mean we can’t protect ‘Star Wars’? What kind of Mickey Mouse ruling is that?!?!?!”

Good call, almost. Here are the ones you’re referring to:
http://exhibits.base...

Those look more navy than royal. But as we’ve learned many times by now, the Okkonen templates aren’t always 100% accurate, and color-matching for early teams was one of his most difficult tasks.

doesn’t someone (or entity) own (perhaps that isn’t the proper legalese) “19-0″?

if you can own (trademark, patent, etc.?) a score or record, i guess you can own a name like tigers, no?

Boy, I wish I had a picture of me in my LL Giants uniform (New York … ha ha … very funny Phil :) ), but I don’t. I do remember it matching the Giants of the day though.

MLB (and the other pro sports) continue to let salaries go through the roof, build palaces for the teams to play in and then expect us to pay for it in exorbitant ticket prices, increased prices for advertised goods, skyboxes that only corporations can afford, and forcing kids that should be looking up to them to pay licensing fees or change names. They need to control their idiotic costs first.

Ahhh … I feel much better, more calm now.

Actually, reading the article it appears that MLB was the reasonable one in this situation. Not to mention that it all worked out well.

Don’t forget, it’s usually the taxpayer, through pro sports teams’ bullying and extorting local governments for ridiculous subsidies and tax exemptions, who usually pay for the stadia we also have to pay the exorbitant ticket prices to get into.

Nike’s slogan for the Big Brown line should be:

Just glue it.

…that’s actually the slogan for the “Eight Belles” line

(Apolgizing in advance. Time + tragedy = comedy)

More on the Syracuse Lacrosse giant numbers we were discussing the other day.

Someone brought up that their white numbers appear bigger because there is no border color and it appears to be true.

Their navy numbers did have a border color and appeared to be smaller (although still ridiculously large).

I agree with you — I am just explaining why the move was made. It’s been very well received throughout Syracuse fans. The new-fangled SU was never embraced

I don’t know which is more offensive: that Dante Bichette dislikes stirrups, or that he likes Chris Berman. Ugh.

EASILY that he likes Chris Berman. I can excuse the stirrup thing because society as a whole has gone to hell….but BERMAN!?!??!?! Ohhhhh my…..not good

The other day, I mentioned how much I disliked those all-orange Ginormous numbered unis!

No piping, nothing!

As opposed to the Semi-Final, their all-whites in the championship game were great! There was contrast, there was shape provided by piping!

Eastbay sells replica Lax gear for the major Nike schools. I love the UVA and Syracuse shorts, but I would love to get my hands on the whites.

I gave the jerseys to friends who still play, but they were gorgeous.

This year’s outing is next Thursday,
