John Smoltz, who went into a kind of Operation Shutdown of his own last week (declining to give status reports on his arm), is on a minor league rehab assignment. Saturday night he pitched for the Mississippi Braves. At first I thought this was a hackneyed throwback promotion — just the hats. Well, it’s still kind of hackneyed. Atlanta Braves uniform, Mississippi Braves hat. OK then. I know other teams have done this before — Hideki Matsui has worn his Yankees helmet (only one flap) in the minors — but that doesn’t make it OK.
Mississippi Braves uniforms are pretty much the same as Atlanta Braves uniforms, especially at home. The Mississippi club has “Braves” on the roadies, too, though that’s the only difference. So I can see where they’re coming from in just letting Smoltz take his own gear. But still … just seems a little lazy.
The hat is interesting, too. Does it look a little small? Smoltz tends to wear his lid a little high, but this seems even higher still. In any case, tight caps are bad. They may cause something like this. Oh, wait. — Bryan (bald guys can make bald jokes, right?)

Maybe Smoltz wearing that jersey is his way of sorta saying, “I don’t really belong down here.” LOL

Would’ve been better if he was wearing his “Hello my name is John Smoltz” nametag while pitching.

The Red Wings captains are certainly cramping a lot in one area with the finals patches right next to the “C” & “A”… I’m surprised the stanley cup patch didn’t end up on a shoulder. http://espn-i.starwa...

That must be a Braves thing. “You’re a Major Leaguer on rehab assignment? Fine. Bring your own uniform. Keep your number, it will be available for you.”
There is a picture of Julio Franco in the dugout of a Braves minor league team. It is really obvious that he brought his big league jersey with him because he is the only one in the picture with a Majestic logo, a Johnny Sain 33 patch, and without the Minor League rear collar logo.

Did anybody else watch yesterday’s fight? The ref had to stop the fight on multiple occasions to have Paul Mallignaggi tape his hair back and eventually have much of it cut off. I know I haven’t posted here in a while but am I not able to post links the way I used to or am I just forgetting how it’s done?

Was at a minor league championship game last night (ECHL Kelly Cup Finals between Cincinnati Cyclones vs. Las Vegas Wranglers) and the Wranglers clearly don’t “get it”. The main jersey logo changes for each and every player, as the logo is a poker chip with the number changing to match the players number. They have a “TV number” on only the left side of the jersey and have a huge white lettering patch on the back of their black jersey. All in all, a complete mess. Anything else like this anywhere else? I have never seen the primary logo change for every player. Being a minor league hockey team, not the easiest thing to find pictures, but found a descent gallery.

According to this press release, the Tigers wore red caps during batting practice, to show solidarity with Mike Illich’s other team. The giant Tiger statue at the front of Comerica apparently is also wearing the big jersey since the Spirit of Detroit is out of commission.
I can’t find any photos of either, though. Anyone have any?

Meh… Is that any worse than this RBK jersey? The Boston Bruins used a chest number from 1936/37 through 1947/48; chest numbers then vanished until this year… Blech!

All of the Braves’ minor league teams (except for the Class A Myrtle Beach Pelicans) are the “Braves.” I presume they all wear the same uniforms (except for the caps)

I used to think that the coolest looking trophy in sports was the Lombardi Trophy and the neatest tradition was the Stanley Cup. With it’s elegant simplicity and Tiffany design, the Lombardi was my favorite (football’s not even my favorite. Baseball is, but that trophy is the lamest.)
Pushing my preferences aside, and basing it purely on looks and tradition, I’d have to say that the Borg-Warner Trophy is the coolest.
I mean … look at it …

It’s just friggin awesome with it’s Deco font, sculpted heads and Greek God waving the checkered. It’s the best one.

So what does the guy wearing Smoltz’s number on that Mississippi team do? Just wear a different jersey? Are there NOBs on the Mississippi squad?

Driver introductions at Indy; Marco Andretti is wearing an Indiana Jones-inspired fire suit. Looks quite interesting.

Not really contributing anything here, but that info about the Cubs logo makes an all time classic logo even more classic. Not a ton of teams have a logo that borrows from some other organization within their home.

The Yankees logo is taken from a badge originally given by tiffany & co to an NYPD officer shot in the line of duty

You know, I was thinking the same thing last night. It was cool at first, but got annoying. Where’s that primary Wranglers logo? Off topic, but what a game! Desharnais scores like a minute in! I’m glad the Cyclones are finally getting some recognition.

Yep, from a distance white numbers on dark tend to appear larger, especially on TV. Syracuse’s are so big, though, it looks like they might literally have ordered the size of white with a white edge (Tennessee’s home football numbers kinda look like that, too), while Virgina’s are the typical size with a contrasting edge.
Either way, some big ass numbers. LOL

Giants manager Bruce Bochy wears New Balance cleats. (Maybe they’re turf shoes.) Anyone else in the show wear New Balance?
(the best fitting shoes around, size 11/4E thank you very much.)

By the way anyone notice Alfonso Soriano losing the ball (with two outs in the ninth inning) in the sun, while his sunglasses were flipped up under the bill of his hat? It allowed my beloved bucs to come back and tie the game and eventually win it in extras!

I was at the Mississippi Braves/Tennessee Smokies game on Saturday night (in Sevierville, about 30 miles from Knoxville) where Smoltz pitched. The M’Braves do wear NOB jerseys and they do have another #29 on the roster, but he kept his jacket on pretty much the entire game.
Do have to give Smoltz credit, though. He came out early, gave autographs for a long time before he warmed up and just chatted with fans in the stands before the game. Not sure how much of a rehab throwing 12 pitches offers (he pitched the 8th inning) but he was gracious to the fans.
My favorite part was when my wife noticed that he was wearing his Atlanta jersey…the first words out of her mouth were “Well, there’s your Uni-Watch moment of the night, right?”
#37 by Cliff on 05.26.08 5:06 pm |
I used to work in the Southern League (AA) and the word was that since the Braves owned most of their affiliates (Richmond, Misissippi, Rome) and they were all the Braves, the uniforms got passed down every year. Thus, Atlanta got new uni’s every season and the minor league clubs saved a bundle not having to replace as many uniforms as normal. Unique situation.
