Yesterday I highlighted a bunch of uni-related items currently being auctioned off by Leland’s. As I mentioned at the time, they have a separate auction catalog just for old photos, many of which are doozies. Here’s a rundown of some that caught my eye:
• You’ve heard of a player winning “the batting crown,” but how often have you seen him wearing an actual crown to mark the occasion? That’s Dixie Walker, who led the National League with a .357 average in 1944.
• Here’s something I’ve never seen before: Ralph Kiner going totally bare-armed (à la Big Klu).
• We’ve all seen old baseball jerseys with lace-up closures. But I’ve never seen the laces look as, well, lace-y as they do here.
• You all know how I’m fond of old-school baseball sweaters, so you can imagine how much I love this shot of Christy Mathewson.
• Great cross-sport photo here: Ty Cobb in golf attire.
• Although I’ve seen it before, it’s always hard to accept that old-time ballplayers kept their fielding gloves tucked in their back pockets. (Also: Lots of dead-ball players looked sort of stiff and unathletic, at least by contemporary standards, but this shot — which is of Larry Doyle, circa 1910s — looks unusually supple and fluid for a hitter from that era.)
• We’re so used to the Yankees wearing “NY” at home and “New York” on the road that it’s easy to forget that they wore “Yankees” — on the road — from 1927 through 1930.
• Here’s future American League prexy Joe Cronin wearing a very unusual uniform. The shot — which is one of the nicer baseball portraits I’ve ever seen — was taken in 1922, when Cronin was only 16 years old and playing for the Columbia Park Boys Club team. Look closely at the chest logo and you’ll see that it repeats the “CPBC” lettering on the placket — unusual case of an acronym appearing twice on the front of a jersey.
• Major find here: a bunch of old San Francisco 49ers publicity pics. These were shot in 1946, when the team was about to begin its inaugural season in the All American Football Conference. Not sure if they didn’t have real uniforms yet or if the stenciled jerseys were their regular practice attire. Either way, very cool.
• Speaking of the Niners, did you know that they originally wore red helmets? Check out these shots of them playing the Browns in 1954. Not sure who the other team is in this shot, but that’s the Niners trying to block the punt, and they’re running the ball here. (And as long as we’re talking about the Niners, check out this interview shot — are those old mics and logos totally hot or what?)
• Check this out: some pics from the Baltimore Colts’ first season, 1953. No shoulder stripes!
• Sixty-eight years after the fact, the Chicago Bears’ sleeve striping is instantly recognizable, even in black-and-white.
• Awesome Uni Watch fodder here, as Blackhawks coach Paul Thompson is shown inspecting the team’s new 1944 uniforms.
• I guess they needed an XXXXL jersey for this guy. That’s Leo Durocher being a good sport.

Research Project: Shea Stadium has Cow-Bell Man (who’s a fan), and PNC Park has Camera Guy (a working photographer, who actually has his own MySpace page). Do other stadiums have folks who regularly roam the stands wearing a uniform with an entrenched NOB persona? I’m not talking about some yayhoo who shows up every now and then, or about a team-employed mascot — I mean a regular person who everyone knows because he’s always at the game, and who happens to wear some sort of specialized “fan name” on his back. If you know of any, please get in touch.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Clever jersey display at PNC Park (with thanks to Ryan Connelly, who also provided that Camera Guy photo). … I’m sure the NFL was pleased to see Rocky Mountain News cartoonist Drew Litton using the league’s new logo. … Hanif Johnson, a high school track-and-fielder in Pennsylvania, apparently favors some seriously rad socks (with thanks to Rich Canulli). … This is hilarious (and for those who want more coverage, I believe my ESPN colleague Jim Caple will have something on it today on Page 2). … Very cool Coca-Cola uniform catalog available here. … UAB has unveiled its new football uniforms. The Blue Jackets have a super fan that show up to every game. He has a jersey with his name, a couple of jumbotron spots, and they occasionally cut to him during games, where he dances and takes off his shirt, to reveal that he’s morbidly obese. He’s THE man.

Hmm. I don’t think Horn Guy has his own jersey, but I think Goat, the other well-known Caps fan, might. He’s the big guy behind one of the goals that you easily hear cheering at Caps games.

I’m guessing, and it’s only a guess I confess, but in those shots of the 49ers vs. the mystery team – I think that would be the Giants. Given the uniform/helmet color, the single stripe on the helmet, and the color of the pants/socks.
The only problem with that is, the Giants and 49ers didn’t play in 1954. And in fact, neither did the 49ers and Browns. See their schedule here: … http://www.pro-footb...
Could it be that those shots are from preseason games, and they only wore the red helmets in games that didn’t count?

The Chicago Cubs have Ronnie Woo Woo. He’s an annoying clown. I think he is/was homeless, but somehow gets into every game and has received free dental work from some Cubs fan dentist. Good story, but the most annoying guy in the world.
“Cubs Woo, Cubs Woo, Cubs Woo” is justifiable reason for homicide in my opinion.

Back in the ’70s the Bulls had a guy named Jeff Platt who was usually in the 350-400 range, and he’d run laps around the court during timeouts. I doubt they’d come up with a promotion yet where anyone with a ticket stub from the game he had a heart attack would win a free hot dog, or chalupa, or something.

I can’t thik of any NOB folks in the stands, but this has awakened memories of wonderful characters like Andy the clown, Wild Bill Hagy, Fireman Ed, etc. None of these guys had a real NOB, though (Fireman Ed= Bruce Harper jersey, Wild Bill= stinky tank top, Andy = Clown outfit), and, with the exception of Fireman Ed, were all trreated badly at the hands of management.

Ronnie Woo Woo pretty much sums up in a word why, although beautiful, Wrigley is just not a great place too see a game. If it’s not the drunkin frat boys that won’t shut up, it’s that annoying buffoon Ronnie Woo Woo screaming all game long. I was one section over frim him 2 years ago during one of the cross town games, terrible. Here’s his site, complete with uni photos, but of from what I can tell, he kept it classy with NNOB. I use classy pretty lossely when refering to this weirdo.

re: Mystery teams in photos. The guys tackling Otto Graham are Colts, right before added horsehoes to helmets…montage of Colts photos corroborate it. Mystery team defending 49ers (that’s #39 Hugh McElhenny running the ball, btw) is the Redskins. Not Giants, pants are too dark. Back then, ‘Skins wore Burgundy (more like maroon actually) helmets with an old gold stripe. Plus, the numerals were sorta distinctive, corners were “peaked”. This is just after Sammie Baugh retired (last game photos of him are in that dark helmet), cuz otherwise he’d have been the punter.

In the shot of Ruth and Gehrig in their “Yankees” road jerseys, it looks like the stirrups are two-toned. Seems strange given that the Yankees don’t really have an accent color. I assume the top color is navy. Is the bottom color gray or ?? Anyone know?

Retraction!!! Yes, that’s the Niners tackling Graham. Duh. Colts unis would photographed much the same in B&W cuz striping scheme was identical. And they (the Colts) did at that time have blue helmets, eventually with the horseshoes on the back, on either side of the white stripe…before moving them to where they are now, when helmets changed to white.

I’ve seen that shot before. Kinda figured was dark gray to match dark gray portion of stirrups. Hard to imagine Yankees ever using a shade of blue other than navy. Never thought to see what Okkonen or “Dressed to the Nines” says about it.

Looks like Dressed to the Nines shows solid blue stirrups, with the cap, stirrups and lettering all the same shade of blue. But I agree, in this picture the lettering definitely doesn’t look like the same shade as the cap. Not sure if this link will work…

What’s interesting about this one is that both teams are wearing dark jerseys. If it’s the Niners and the Redskins, wouldn’t they have been too similar (were the ‘Skins wearing burgundy then?)?
First I saw that photo I thought it looked like the LA Coliseum and that might have been the LA Dons, but if it’s really 1954, I don’t know. Is that Kezar?
I think this is recognizable as Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, and as for the Colts’ jerseys with no shoulder stripes, I’ve seen them on a previous occasion.

It’s the ‘Skins, alright. Their burgundy back then was almost maroon. Pre-TV many, many times games featured both teams in dark jerseys. And, yes, it’s Kezar.
One easy way to tell if it’s ever the Dons or Miami Seahawks or any other AAFC team that didn’t survive to wind up in the NFL…all AAFC play was without a numbering code.
Still odd to see that. Was looking through the CFL section of 1960 Peterson Pro Football Annual I found on ebay a couple weeks ago (found ‘61 and ‘62, too). I’d forgotten that RB Cookie Gilchrist wore #85 with the Argonauts and QB Sam Etchevery was #92 for the Alouettes. For anyone not old enough to remember those guys, they both ended up in the NFL within a couple years…Gilchrist with the Bills, Etchevery with the Cardinals.
That brings to mind an interesting question. Who was the last full-time NFL QB who didn’t wear a number from 1-19? John Hadl (#21) with Chargers and Rams, maybe?

The other team in that 49ers photo has to be the Giants. Looks like gray pants, the helmet has a single stripe, and that jersey and helmet would appear to be blue against the red of the Niners.

Nope. It’s the Redskins. Pants too dark to be Giants’ silver/gray (old gold photographs considerably darker in B&W than silver/gray)…and the fancy numbers were the Redskins’ style back then. Also, in many old photos is almost hard to see the stripe on Giants helmet cuz colors are of such similar value.
Here again, note the diagonal, slighly concave edges on numbers and compare to photo. ‘Skins had that style, Giants didn’t

Thought I’d look for any hard evidence to help us re: Giants or Redskins. If it’s 1954, ‘Niners played Redskins in opening game at Kezar (SF won, 41-7), and didn’t play the Giants that year.

The now defunct WCHL/ECHL San Diego Gulls had a cow-bell ringing fan that wore a jersey that said Cow Bell Chuck when spoken, but he spelled it in an eastern European interpretation that actually made it seem like a hockey player’s last name: Kowbelchuk. I always thought that was cool.
There’s a guy that goes to Los Angeles Angels games wearing “Bubble Gum Man” as his NOB (#69), and he has a big plastic tub of Bazooka gum that he distributes to kids/fans.

Really, I’m not being difficult. I just spent a lot of time as kid in the 50s and 60s figuring out uniform colors from B&W photos, looking for ways to interpret different colors and find details that would give glues to tell one team from another…so I got pretty good at it.
Won’t make me a dime, of course, but still…LOL
Again, it’s not about who’s right, it’s about making sure we uni wonks GET it right. Agreed?

Ricko is right. It IS the Redskins in this photo playing the 49ers. And it has to be from 1954. The Redskins wore gold helmets with a burgundy stripe in 1953. In 1955 the Redskins wore the same helmet as in the photos mentioned, but they added a shoulder stripe with a gold/white/gold stripe combo on the maroon jerseys. The 1955 Niners widened the silver stripe on the red helmet and added the renowned black drop shadow to the numerals, and had a red/black/red strip combo on the pants in 55.

The ravens have quite a few fans like this. The one I know best (cause he sits near me) is Captain Dee-Fense! (That’s not me in the picture.)
Another is Sports Steve (who actually has his own website: sportssteve.com). I’m actually not sure if he has a NOB on the jersey cause of all the beads, but he has his own cape which does.
There are others too but that’s all I could find after a few quick searches.

You can’t quite tell, but of the 60,000 seats, they say that only 18,000 were between the goal lines. The stadium was shoehorned into a corner of Golden Gate Park, right in the middle of the neighborhood.

I think the “KU” derives from Kansasans differentiating between it and “K-State”. Pretty much in the vernacular there.
“OU” may come from wanting to be something other than a “Sooner”. Which students you figure spend more time explaining, “What’s a (blank) ?”…

There’s a guy who comes to Michigan hockey games who has a 666 jersey with SATAN (I think it’s SATAN) on the back, with the correct fonts and everything. Strange to see a triple number on the back. I see him at most every game, or at least used to when I sat on the same side of the arena as him.

Note that at no point in the story does Krysten Oliphant actually mention what number Craig Biggio wore.
It’s a story about a guy’s number being retired. Astros fans know the number. Not everybody does. You kind of have to include the number.

Don’t expect much from the on-field product for awhile though. Daryl Gross, our athletic director, has decided to schedule the likes of USC, Penn State, BC, and Notre Dame till about 2012.

Cricket steals an idea from Cycling
Not sure if this has been chronicled before, but the newly formed Indian Premier League have implemented a colour-coded award scheme. Any player who takes to the field whilst the leading run scorer in the competition is entitled to wear an orange cap. Likewise the leading wicket taker can wear a purple one.
Check out Gautam Gambhir and Kumar Sangakarra for evidence of the orange cap in action. Can’t seem to find any photos of the purple cap at the moment.
