Bad weather, travel, and work conspired to keep me off the softball field for nearly a month, but yesterday I finally made my second appearance of the season. As you may dimly recall, I’m wearing a different set of stirrups each time I play this year (details here), so here’s the latest installment of that project:
This week’s design: orange with black and white stripes, medium-cut.
Ideal for feeling like a member of: the Baltimore Orioles, 1966-71.
Color-coordination factor: I own almost no orange clothing. But I do have this (here’s a closer view), so it was sort of like I was wearing the entire 1969 World Series.
How they looked: Every time I looked down, I had to pinch myself.
How I felt: Like Brooks Freakin’ Robinson, baby.
How I played: 1-for-3 at the plate (BB, 1B, F9, F8), 2 runs scored, 1 RBI. Had some fun on the basepaths (a nifty hook slide got me the call on a bang-bang play at third). Uneventful day in the field.
It’s interesting to note the differing approaches used by teams that wore this stirrup design template over the years. The Orioles and Red Sox put the key team color (orange and red, respectively) on the bottom. But the Pirates put gold on top.
Still Working on That Anniversary Sleeve Patch: As briefly noted last Friday, the site’s second birthday passed over the weekend. And as promised, I’ve got a few announcements to mark the occasion.
• First, Brooklyn-based intern Nina Dubin has designed a new Uni Watch T-shirt. As you can see, it’s a guide to vertical arching (here’s a bigger view of the logo), and there’s a tagline on the back. This shirt is available to all — get yours here.
• Second, we’ve finally gotten around to designing the special seal for charter members who choose to order new membership cards. The seal looks like this, and it will appear on the front of the card like so (yes, it’s a new color set, but we wanted the seal to stand out). As I’ve explained previously, there’s no need to order a new card if you already like the one you have — all memberships are of the lifetime variety, and all charter members (i.e., members who joined during the first two months of the program) are already listed in boldface on the membership roster. But if you’re a charter member and want a new design for the back of your card, your new card will include the seal on the front. If you’re happy with the back design but just want a new card that includes the seal on the front, we can do that for you too. Either way, a new card costs $15. • Third — well, the third announcement isn’t quite ready to be announced yet. Tomorrow, I hope. But let’s just say I think you’ll like it a whole lot.

First off…those Braves Jerseys are so ugly they rival Pittsburghs ketchup jerseys as the ugliest in baseball.
2nd…WNBA uniforms look too busy with McDs, Adidas and WNBA logo. Why does the NBA not allow Adidas logos on their uniforms but allows it on the WNBA unis? I personally think that all professional teams uniforms should be logo free. Save it for warm ups and sideline apparel.

I’d forgotten the Tigers sported some post-war striped hosiery. I always liked the Pirates three-striped stirrups, too, when they were still at Forbes, though when they went to the double knits, I didn’t mind the large mass of gold. Perhaps it was because Clemente wore them so well. Now, the bumble bee look? That was OK for maybe a year. Especially the way Kent Teckulve looked. Pops could pull anything off, or I wouldn’t tell him if he couldn’t.

Odd the way the Pirates had the colors arranged on their striped stirrups. It doesn’t match the order of the stripes on the sleeves or the waistband. The gold should be on the bottom, just like the Red Sox and Orioles.

I watched parts of the ‘71 and ‘75 World Series game 7s on Classic over the weekend and two things stood out.
1) A guy for the pirates in ‘71 stepped out of the batter’s box, pulled a cloth handkerchief out of his back pocket and blew his nose. Never seen that before.
2) In ‘75 a pinch hitter for the Red Sox came up to plate with just a regular cap and no batting helmet. No one said a word as he grounded out. There wasn’t a grandfather clause on batting helmets, was there?

I dont know if its been mentioned, but the Baseball HOF’s Dressed to the Nines database now has additional info for some of the uniforms (ie- memorial patches, or important appearances on unis like player numbers or the first appearance of the interlocking NY etc) The entries with additional info have a green outline around them.

For paul to mock the comments of his loyal readers shows he doesn’t care about their opinions. Well last time I checked uniwatch is a business and should (for both socially and financially sound reasons) head the sentiment of its customers…after all there would be no uniwatch without them.
I hate bitching about these types of things, but it just seemed like enough is enough.
That being said. I’m in Australia and will be attending the State of Origin Rugby League (all-stars) game in Sydney on Wednesday. It is the leagues 100th year and both teams will be wearing special jerseys to mark the occasion.

The announcers for the Rays game mentioned that the Rays decided to go w/the BP jerseys today. No special reason, just that they were going to wear them periodically throughout the season. The funny thing is for the first few minutes the announcers were calling them their “alternate” jerseys. They eventually corrected themselves and referred to them as their BP jerseys.

On Saturday in comments, I mentioned that despite all the, uh, hubbub, about the high school kid’s jersey, it appeared as though it was tucked in. There was an immediate reply from someone who calls themselves BigBootyLover58, telling me that I should “look at the picture for more than one second before posting.”
I had studied the picture very closely, Mr. Booty, and have done even more studying of it since. I still say it’s tucked in. At far left, you can see it slightly coming out of the waistline as the kid pitches. Just to the right of that, you can see the thing pretty clearly tucked into it. And then on the right, sure the billow comes down below the waist, but that doesn’t mean the shirt’s not tucked in. If it wasn’t, you’d see the whole bottom of the jersey flying way further down. And then at the far right, at his left hip, more evidence of a tucked-in jersey, as you can see his pants-stripe going all the way up.

Paul, randomly came across your softball game while walking through the park yesterday. Did you notice the 3rd base coach (or manager? hanger-on?) of the other team was wearing stirrups as well? Pretty generic black, and some amazingly baggy cuffing, but stirrups nonetheless.

Poor Mr. Rauschenberger would look a lot better if they actually had his name across the shoulders instead of sticking that dumb Minor League logo on the collar and shifting the NOB down several inches. Those logos really mess things up.

The tradition of not touching the Conference Final trophy is a major superstition. Ottawa’s Daniel Alfredsson touched it last season after winning it, and Anaheim had a Stanley Cup parade. It’s the same with the hats – you don’t play to be a Conference Champion; you play to be the Stanley Cup Champion.
Is anyone from the NCAA reading this?
Tp give more of an example, the Hurricanes’ hoisted the Prince of Wales trophy in 2002, and lost to Detroit in five games. In 2004, Jerome Iginla of Calgary grabbed the Clarence Campbell trophy, and Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup.
A deep-rooted superstition in the hockey world, to say the least.

If you think about it how often do you look at an officials shoes, other than just accidental observation (shoe in the background, etc) Also the shoes are predominantly all black maybe a little grey, so the branding doesn’t really stand out.
Umpire I think are a little bit different. Shoe companines (mainly New Balance, and now Reebok) are starting to capitalize on the exposure that MLB umpires get. Think about how often you see an umpire’s shoes during a game. Most telecasts switch to an umpire view on almost any call, or their in the shot will the play is happening. Also, think about how many dugout shots they show of the home plate area. You usually get a pretty good side view of the shoes, which display the company logo.

The photo of the Dean brothers had to be taken sometime between 1937 and 1939, when Dizzy had been traded to the Cubs, and Paul was still with the Cardinals. The picture was probably taken in ‘38 or ‘39, since Paul was injured and appeared in only one game for the Cards in ‘37.
A Dean family member once told me, “‘Dizzy’ was dizzy, but ‘Daffy’ (Paul) wasn’t really daffy…”
That list of awesome MLB photos includes a color picture of Stan Musial wearing the infamous 1956 uniform — the one without the “Birds on the Bat” logo!
Those St. Louis Blues jerseys worn by Lynn Patrick and Sid Salomon never saw the ice… the Blues wore this sweater in their inaugural season.

Love the Orioles stirrups, Paul. Been looking for those. Got a pair of the Red Sox version of that style from a guy who attended a couple Red Sox fantasy camps and had an extra pair, but the black-orange combo has thus far eluded me.
And, your clock turns back even further than ‘66. Orioles went to those socks as early as ‘55, I think. Their first season in Baltimore (’54) socks were black with three equal width orange stripes.

That NFL playbook is the greatest thing. I got one when I was a 10 year old when they first game out. I practically wore the thing out looking through it and learning about zone defenses. I also put a lot of my stickers inside the front cover. Good times.
The collection of those round NFL helmet patches looks exactly like the patch put on the front of my Vikings stocking cap that I got for $1 when my dad filled up his gas tank back in 1970 or so.
I’m not sure about the details of the Rays wearing BP jerseys in a game, but I have a Twins BP jersey worn in a game back in 2005, after introducing their dark road alternates, which made me even more curious. I was able to email someone with the Twins, who told me (forgive the all caps, but that’s how he replied) “ALL MLB TEAMS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO WEAR THEIR RESPECTIVE BP JERSEYS FOR LIVE GAME ACTION — THE REASON IS THE JERSEYS ARE COOLER THAN THE TRADITIONAL GAME JERSEYS. TEAMS MAY WEAR THOSE WHEN THE WEATHER IS PARTICULARLY WARM.”
I thought those road grays must really be hot when they choose to wear a dark colored BP jersey on a hot day because the fabric is “cooler”.
Now that the Cool Base jerseys have been introduced, I’m doubt if that excuse still holds true today.

For baseball, I just purchased a pair of New Balance plate shoes, and those are the first plate shoes I’ve worn that had the band logo prominently on the side. I hadn’t seen the Reebok versions until a few weeks ago.

I had heard that the Patriots considered changing their name from “Boston” to “Bay State” when they moved to Foxboro; but opted for “New England” when they realized that media outlets would refer to them as the B.S. Patriots.
This is probably what Billy Sullivan meant by “unacceptable aspects of the Bay State label” as noted in the second article.
