According to this article from the Freep, the Tigers all decided to wear high socks for luck against the D-Backs last night. Apparently it worked, since they broke their win streak and won their first game in which they scored less than 5 runs. Apparently they’ll be doing it for a while. A good sign, I think…I think Guillen and Maggs look pretty good with the socks, but unfortunately there are no photos of them there…

A good sign, I think…I think Guillen and Maggs look pretty good with the socks, but unfortunately there are no photos of them there…

i can verify this, i watched the game last night. most of the dudes looked pretty good. todd jones, however, did not leave his socks showing…. and at the end of the game, he pulled his pants up to his knees, to show him wearing a pair of crew-height NBA LOGO SOCKS. it was pretty funny. also, some of the guys looked a little silly, like they weren’t used to cuffing their pants…. aquilino lopez and francisco cruceta were both more than a little uneven.

Apparently it was the actual gold glove that the Golden Glove winners get presented with each year, and that was the one he won in 2006, his last year.

He was a mediocre hitter in Japan, so that translated to being a below average hitter stateside. But the guy sure knows how to please the fans.

I paused yesterday when I read your comment and wondered if it were really possible for somebody (aside from an owner, trainer, or someone else closely involved) to have flashbacks comparing two horses, that he has probably seen a combined 5 times. Let’s ignore that it’s been 25 years since the first one last raced in a major event.

Your comment is even more perplexing when you consider that we’re talking about horses running around tracks. I’ll concede that Big Brown and Secretariat are both brown horses that run around those tracks much faster than the other horses, but beyond that, it’s not like the horses have similar signature moves or anything.

Now you’ve essentially posted the same comment twice. What’s the deal, man? We get it, you probably know a superficial thing or two about horse racing and it makes you feel like a well-rounded sports fan, but give it a rest. Nobody is impressed. If you said the same thing to people in the real world yesterday, they weren’t impressed either. They thought you were being pompous too.

i can verify this, i watched the game last night. most of the dudes looked pretty good. todd jones, however, did not leave his socks showing…. and at the end of the game, he pulled his pants up…

There was a stretch during Jones’s stint with the Marlins in 2005 when the rest of the team went high-cuffed except for him, and he’d pull up his cuffs after geting the last out. So this is sort of a deja vu thing for him.

Just turned on the game (note to self … time to upgrade the satellite to include WGN so I can enjoy baseball again!), I assumed those were Spring Training/Batting Practice, but I wasn’t sure.

On a similar note from the broadcast … Just saw a tourism commercial for Kansas City, of which a big part was a pitcher (about the size of Roidger Clemens, for some reason) pitching off the mound at Kauffman Stadium. It had the stadium name, and even the new jumbo-jumbotron, but the pitcher was wearing an unmarked Jersey!

I’m guessing MLB wouldn’t allow the unis to be used without a kickback. I wonder why baseball’s no longer considered the national pastime?

just got thru reading yesterdays (glad i missed that) and todays comments, and the only one that stuck with me both yesterday and today WAS that comment…and while i barely remember seeing secretariat race (and never live), i gotta say…maybe it wasn’t flashbacks, as that is prolly not the proper term…but damn

this horse…big brown…is SOMETHING SPECIAL…

i’ve been at belmont either 3 or 4 times when there was a shot a triple crown (since slew and affirmed), and of course, none have done it…don’t know if i’ll be making it there this year, but i’d bet every last penny i had on this horse…this is the real deal…of course…brown will prolly run at like 1-7

say what you want about the previous poster’s “flashbacks”, but there is NO DENYING this is one special beast and one who WOULD be wearing carnations 3 weeks hence, if he could stand flowers, that is…because he WILL be the champion…and you can take that to the bank…i wouldn’t be surprised if the field is only 3-4 deep after brownie, as who wants to be humiliated (and all will be)

Halladay (32) just hit in the eight in Philadelphia wearing Burnett’s 34 helmet. Philly TV commentary speculated that Halladay didn’t bring a helmet on the trip because he didn’t anticipate pitching in an NL stadium (he started Wed in Minnesota).

As for Secretariat, it was 35 years ago - 35 years ago that “Big Red” won the Triple Crown. I barely remember it, and I’m 43. Unless you’re my age or older, you had to be pretty precocious to remember what the media storm was like back then.

Except that it’s been kind of repeated four times in the last six years when a horse won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. I have no idea if Big Brown is better than War Emblem or Sunday Silence or Pleasant Colony. (Or Affirmed, who actually did win the Triple Crown.) But I know people fall all over themselves about any horse that wins the Derby convincingly and if they follow up by winning the Preakness, it’s Katie Bar the Door. The last 10 times a horse has won the first two legs, it hasn’t sealed the deal.

BTW, the Phils lost for the first time on the Phanatic’s Birthday sine 1997, ending a ten-year streak. It was also the first birthday loss in Citizens Bank Park as well as also the first to a Canadian club (no, not that item) since the Montreal Expos in a make-up doubleheader that year.

Just got finished watching “Bang The Drum Slowly” on Classic. This is my favorite baseball movie. Sure there are a lot of things wrong with it, but for those of use who harp about a time in the game that we truly loved, this movie serves as a time capsule.

Just a few of reasons to see it if you haven’t:
-DeNiro.
-Shea Stadium before they put crap all over, pitching rubbers to the right and left of the home plate circle.
-Yankee Stadium before they tore it down in 1973.
-Great MLB clips including White Sox with blue sanis and Oakland A’s in gold vests.
-Tampa Airport before the “Tony Jannus” airside trams.
-Carpenter Complex (which looks pretty much the same) in “Aquaclara” a cute take on Clearwater.

The last two are personal favs based on countless hours spent.

In the mid 1990s the Sox had a red alternate caps for Sunday games that I don’t think made it past April. It was a good looking red cap with a white “B” with navy shadowing. I bought one a few years ago on-line from Twin Enterprise, Inc. They don’t offer it anymore, just the ’70s era cap. The 1990s cap was a good looking cap, I wish they held on to it. It would go perfectly with the red jerseys.

Odd the way the Pirates had those striped stirrups. It doesn’t match the stripes on the sleeves or the waistband. The gold should be on the bottom, just like the Red Sox and Orioles. THAT would match the sleeve stripes on those Pirates unis.

A number of the jockeys at Charles Town in West Virginia also work the “Eight Bells” stickers Saturday. One of them even made sure to point to his sticker during a winner’s circle photo.

I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I mean, I might have thought it was a big deal if the ship hadn’t already sailed on tradition in baseball eons ago. Or if there weren’t about 3,487 other things wrong with baseball that should be fixed before I feign righteous indignation about what the other team wears.

I barely give a shit what my team wears. The white with blue pinstripes look nice. The grays are fairly traditional, I like them. The blue alts I could live without, but what’s the point of bitching about it?
