A few years ago, NASCAR mandated a helmet law — every pit crewman who goes over the wall needs a brain bucket. Trouble is, everyone’s favorite governing body didn’t say what kind of helmet. Just, “wear a helmet.”
Kevin Harvick’s team is currently sporting a BMX/skateboard-style lid. Interesting choice. I think I’d opt for something with a little more protection, though. Something like this, maybe (I’d keep the shark, of course). This would be good, though I worry about visibility, and I think some of the Giants wore this one last year. And let’s not even get into this one.
Ultimately, though, all of the helmets in the world won’t help if Danica Patrick decides to take you out at the knees. Easy joke? Sure. But it’s Sunday morning. And that’s how things are sometimes.

As you can see there, the NASCAR official wears an open faced, bike looking helmet, but it is in fact a hard shelled (read: same as a driver’s helmet or motorcycle helmet) style that was designed to accommodate the radio headsets. Teams that wear the closed face helmets wear earbud type headsets with microphones built into the chin bar.
I can’t find a photo right now, but an F1 team within the last two years wore Stormtrooper helmets (I feel like it was Red Bull Racing).

Cech wears the helmet to prevent a re-occurrence of a skull fracture. Not only that, he will probably always wear it considering he needed 50 stitches in a training collision recently.

To be fair to Danica, the pit crew member who got hit admitted that it was his own damn fault for walking in front of a car on a hot pit road.
Also, the “Helmets on pit road” rule came to be after someone’s head actually got ran over by a car. The lids aren’t so much for facial protection as they are for cranial, and in that regard they are perfect.

Not quite, at least not in NASCAR. He got hit and thrown against the inside pit wall (separating the work area from the equipment area). It is possible that is the reasoning in Formula 1 or IndyCar, but I have not heard of an incident like that. Crew members also have to wear fire suits as well, due to numerous fires that have occurred during pit stops over the years.
I am happy today’s post was right in my wheelhouse.

Not only do crew members have to wear firesuits, but NASCAR officials do too. Back in the day they wore those fashionable polyester red shirts, with the stadium jackets if it was cold enough. Now they all wear firesuits, gloves, and helmets. I also know that IndyCar rules require everyone within the “hot pit” area during a race (Crew, officials, and reporters) to wear the suits.

No way. Radio commercials are programmed well in advance. Studio ops get a continuity log for each broadcast, telling them exactly which spots to play and when.

NASCAR rules state the same, sort of. Anyone on the vehicle side of pit wall must be in suit/helmet/gloves/fireproof steel toed shoes. On the equipment side, regular shirts, pants, and shoes (long pants and close-toed shoes) may be worn. I think F1 is the same as IndyCar is, but there are no reporters or fans down there during the event.

Not at any of the radio stations or team broadcasts I’ve worked. Sports broadcasts in particular are carefully programmed; even pitching changes and extra innings have specific spots programmed even though they sometimes don’t get used. Board ops don’t get that kind of discretion where advertising dollars are involved.
Regardless, a board op listening in cue would not be able to hear what was going out over the stadium P.A. during an inning break, unless the on-site engineer was sending him the P.A. feed; the crowd mic alone wouldn’t pick it up clearly.

PRETTY IN PINK: Most players on both teams used pink bats and donned pink wristbands as part of MLB’s breast-cancer awareness program on Mother’s Day.
Castillo, Jose Reyes and Cincinnati star Ken Griffey Jr. also wore black spikes with pink trim and pink shoelaces. Reyes initially said he and Castillo weren’t going to wear them because they were told MLB would fine them for a uniform violation. “But we decided to do it for a good thing,” Reyes said.
