The answer for the wrist band question is that in college baseball the pitching coaches often call the pitches, and as a result sign picking is very common. To counter this practice, a system where the catcher will have a grid with different pitches in the boxes on his arm.(Think Battleship). For instance, the pitching coach will flash the number 1, 2, then 5, and the catcher will then look at column 12, row 5, and see curveball. The cards can be changed every inning and there are no repeats, so it is unpickable. I have heard of some teams giving a wrist band to the whole team and running all of their signs off of them, but this is less common.

Both the catchers on our college baseball team wear the wristband, so I assume it's for them to remember the signs and all the defensive shifts and such?

I don't have a screen grab but Black (Blue)Jays jackass manager John Gibbons actually did something reaconable last night versus the bosox. He chose to wear the regular ball cap instead of that stupid T hat that the rest of the team wore.

The nameplate is white.
