The Nationals, like every other MLB team, participated in the Jackie Robinson 42fest on April 15th. In fact, they were one of the clubs that dressed the entire team in 42 that night.
But apparently that wasn’t enough for the Nats. Yesterday’s game against the Mets was billed as “Jackie Robinson Night.” They unveiled a 42 on the outfield wall, and 42 was worn during the game by Ray King, Lastings Milledge, and Willie Harris (all shown in that photo).
This raises a bunch of questions for me:
• Why wasn’t the 42 already on the wall? Like, it was already retired, right? I realize it’s a new stadium, but so what? The number was already supposed to be retired on an MLB-wide basis.
• Why did the Nats get to dress players in 42 again? Okay, so they were on the road last week, but so what? Is every road team from April 15th gonna get to do this? I disagree with people who say that the annual April 15th celebration cheapens the number, but I do think it got cheapened a bit last night. I realize some people will say, “Anything that raises awareness of Jackie Robinson is a good thing,” and I generally agree with that, but turning his memory into a way to add another promotion to your home schedule is totally bogus. The whole point of April 15th is that it’s a one-day thing — a tribute day, a special day. If we start to make every day special, the practical result is that no days are.
• Why was Ray King wearing white cleats in the preame ceremony? He switched to black for the game.
• While we’re at it, why is Ray King so fat?
It’s also interesting to see the design scheme the Nats chose for the 42 on the outfield wall. Many (most?) teams have chosen to depict it in the old Brooklyn Dodgers design scheme, or at least in blue (additional examples here, here, and here), although not every team has done this (additional examples here, here, and here). The Nats chose to use their own font with the numbers trimmed in blue and gray, which I find to be an unsatisfying middle ground. By trying to have it both ways, they ended up with neither.
Uni Watch News Ticker: “This site has a ton of photos from the Arizona Fall League (especially from 2002),” writes Steve Delaney. “One of the most interesting finds is this — that’s Jerry Hairston of the Orioles throwing and Alfonso Soriano of the (at the time) Yankees on the right. I’d forgotten that at one point Belvedere finds himself wearing a Yankees jersey (yes, it’s in inaccurate, but hey, artistic license and all that). … “Great stirrups being worn by St. Helens High in Oregon,” writes Travis McGuire. “But what’s up with that mound?” … Attention, Jeremy Brahm: Steven Wyder spotted this on eBay. Cleveland once used that “C” crest, so it’s a throwback t-shirt.
I’m surprised Paul didn’t catch that himself.

The Indians logo was not in a Cincinnati logo, but a wishbone C that the Tribe used in the early ’50s. At times they also had a red wishbone C on navy caps.
On an unrelated note, the Minnesota Golden Gophers unveiled new football uniforms, including mix and matches of two jerseys and three pants.

It would be funny if things came full circle on Jackie Robinson’s 42. Instead of the number being retired by every team, each squad will instead be required to have one player on the field wearing 42 at all times.

Hot dogs. Thousands and thousands of hot dogs. Oh, and he’s a left-handed specialist. The dude’s job is to sit around and wait for that one situation where he has the upper hand. After that situation is dealt with, he’s done — go take a shower Ray. The whole thing takes probably 20 minutes. And then it’s hot dog time.

That mound in Oregon looks like a portable mound that can be placed anywhere. I’ve seen those a few times, mostly indoors so pitchers can get more realistic practice inside. From the many lines on the field, it looks like a multi-purpose field and having a permanent mound on it would wreck the multi-purpose aspect of it.

Interestingly, the Nats have a graphic dedicated to Jackie Robinson in their bullpen already, so I’m not sure why they also put the 42 on the outfield wall, regardless of the font it appears in. The graphic is the baseball on the wall of the bullpen in the twelfth photo in the linked gallery.

It’s an Indians hat logo from 1953 or ‘54 through 1957 (in ‘58 went to just red wishbone “C” edged in white). And Chief Wahoo was in front of the “C”. They reprised it for one season a couple years later (’62, maybe?). I’ve seen that odd Pilots hat before. Based on baseball card photos with obvious Arizona spring training vistas in bkgd, a plain block “S” was the only trim on hat for most of spring training. Then that italic “S” with the scrambled eggs came along but had a very short life (it may even have been used in a few reg. season games) before they settled on the block “S” with the nautical trim. I remember watching it at the time (’69), wondering when they were gonna settle on their hat design.

I knew I’d seen the 42 already retired, but I couldn’t find it when I looked for it pregame. Then I saw the blue tarp and thought that they were just unveiling the number I’d already seen.
But nope. Here’s a picture I took on April 10, which has the number retired and in the visitors’ bullpen. That area is now painted over with green. As you can see, the original is a lot better than the new one.

On a side note, can anyone from the NY/NJ area please explain the team allegiances in that area. It’s toally confusing to everyone I know. Not that it matters, but I’ve always just been curious. Is it as simple as who your dad roots for, or are the side of town as important as they are to say, Cubs and Sox fans?

According to mbtn.net , the number 14 has been only worn by 3 people. Gil Hodges originally wore it from the clubs inception util his release in May of ‘63. Then in 1965 (the year of the card’s photo) Ron Swoboda wore it the entire 1965 season. Swoboda would then give up 14 for new acquired Ken Boyer. Ken would wear 14 from the start of the 1967 season until he was traded to the White Sox July of 1967.
The number would be unworn until the Mets “traded” for then Washington Senators manager Gil Hodges. Gil would then wear 14 until his all too soon death in 1972. :(
Yes, The Mets actually traded one of their players, Bill Denehy, for Hodges which was managing in Washington at the time. I beleieve that the Mets thought highly of his time with the Mets as player, mentoring the younger players during the end of his playing career. Something that is unheard of now.

I can take a crack at it at least for baseball and football. Obviously, people in the Bronx tend to be yankee fans and people in Queens tend to be mets fans. If you go out towards long island, people tend to be mets fans. if you go towards upstate, they tend to be yankee fans. I live in New Jersey, and it seems like a majority of New Jerseyans are yankees fans (although i am a Mets fan). As to football, I think their is a simialar dynamic, as the Jets used to play in Queens and many people who are Mets fans are Jets fans. The Giants training camp, however, is in Albany, so when you go closer to upstate you get more Giants fans. New Jerseyans also seem to lean towards the Giants, potentially because the Giants moved to Jersey first.
In Hockey, everyone is (and should be) a Ranger’s fan. If you watched the Devils/Ranger’s series, it seemed their were more Rangers fans than Devils fans. Same seems to happen at regular season Islander and Devils games.

Agreed. The Mets should have one of the best looks in sports (especially the white homes with blue piping), but the black really ruins it. Even when the black is limited to a dropshadow, it makes the wordmark muddy and harder to read. Doesn’t pop as much as it did in the old color scheme.

Side of town is much less important than in Chicago, because there’s less of a clear-cut demarcation once you get out of Queens and the Bronx. A lot of it is family heritage.
New Jersey is spoken of as being Yankee territory, and Connecticut is spoken of as belonging to the Mets (though my experience there is exactly the opposite). That could be related to how easy it is to get to each ballpark, which would make Westchester solidly pinstriped.

Can anyone comment on the Red Sox (circa 1967) making inroads into the Dodgers- and Giants-less Tri-State fan base? I’ve read a few places that some alienated former NL fans in the area – specifically in CT – started to gravitate toward the Red Sox that season. (Shoulda been 2 years more patient with the Mets, IMO.)
And – without seeing the name and number treatments – I like the Team Canada jerseys. I fall in lockstep with Paul and find the swooshtika loathsome, but I think it’s a nice, clean design that features a good logo. And I like the more traditional stripe treatment, especially compared with the unis trotted out at the Torino Olympics.
(I chose that photo to show the stripes, not to tweak you Canadians.)

This is actually a Retro Sport t-shirt with what is apparently a vintage logo for the Canton-Akron Indians (the AA team for the Cleveland Indians). You can buy it here: http://www.distantre...
Ted actually wears Retro Sport t-shirts pretty much every episode (or at least has for the past 5 or 6 episodes).
… I worked for the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989 when we moved to Canton, OH from Burlington, VT. The ballpark was in Canton, and paid for by Canton residents before we announced the name would be the “Canton-Akron Indians”. There was some outrage because Akron really did nothing to bring a team to the area.
To help lessen the controversy, we asked for permission to use the old logo showing the wishbone C and Chief Wahoo on our caps, and Major League Baseball and the Cleveland Indians allowed us to do so. I don’t think the logo ever appeared on our jerseys (which were the same jerseys as the big league team used).
The Canton-Akron Indians died in the 90s when the city of Akron courted the team and built a bigger, better ballpark. The team is now known as the Akron Aeros.

I just took a tour of the Nationals ball park while in DC this weekend.
Regarding the #42 being put on the wall since it was already retired, it actually was on the wall already. The number was posted within the bullpen. While both bullpens are very open to views from the entire stadium, it was definitely really hard to see the number tribute from the stands. I’m betting most fans never knew it was there.
Anyway, while I was there, they said that they would be moving the number out of the bullpen so people could see it, and having a ceremony since just letting it appear didn’t seem right.
What I want to know is, who had the bright idea to put it in the bullpen in the first place? I know the bullpens, even the inside, can easily be seen from the whole park, but it was still a brain fart to put it there.

My pet peeve about the 42 Retirement is the lack of uniformity on the actual displays. Yes, I know the Astros have 42 up for Robinson, but why put it in the Astros font (especially since the font has changed since 97 and will probably change again in the next 10 years)? It should be displayed in the Dodgers font, in Dodger Blue, league-wide, unless the team has retired 42 for someone else (i.e. STL).
But it’s not something that burns really burns me up, just an annoyance about it.

Just so you all know, the wishbone “C” was an Indians logo. I have the throwback ballcap that I wore to the Minneapolis Uni Watch party with that wishbone “C” on it from the 1957 Indians. Paul may remember it, and I know someone commented on it in the comment section of the Uni watch article where Paul talked of the Minny get-together.
While the minor-league logo is correct on the T-shirt, the big club did wear the wishbone “C” for a while. I get more people asking me about the Bears thinking my ballcap is a Chicago Bears cap.

Frank Thomas was re-signed by Oakland, and is playing in their game right now. The question is, did he get to wear #35, or does Dana Eveland get to keep it? Both are listed as #35 on the Oakland roster page now. If he did get it, I wonder if he had to give Eveland anything for it. Anybody watching the game?

maybe it’s just me and my borderline ocd’ness, but when i looked at the new minnesota uniforms the stripes and everything weren’t the biggest things that bothered me (matter of fact, i actually didn’t mind them in spite of that). what i finally realized was that the number 22 guy on the coach’s right looked off. if they were using a typical varsity font block in serif, than shouldn’t the 2’s look like this or this? if there is another font out there that has only a half-serif’ed 2 than please correct me…
just a thought…

No-Appeal Ruling on Team Canada Sweaters
I’m sorry. But here is the final ruling of the Confederation High Council on Ice Hockey Aesthetics: The new sweaters would be quite acceptable if the maple leaf insignia on the front were rendered as it is on the national ensign, ie, a solid red (albeit outlined in white for use on the red home sweaters). There is no call whatsoever for the bifurcation of the national symbol into red-and-black sections, particularly when that bifurcation is made dramatic by the depiction of a lamentably lop-sided “hockey player” who in his dreams imagines himself to be the Jerry West of the North. The Council also declares that the optimal revision would be to take the sleeve design (admirably traditional) and use it on the front.

HOWEVER, that Indians cap to the immediate right (blue base, blue brim, red “C”, white bordering) is inaccurate. The actual Indians’ “C” cap in the sixties had a peak to the upper arch, with the lower arch almost being flat. Look at the pics of Rocky Colavito, Tito Francona, Harvey Kuenn. The “C” in this advert IS Cincinnati style, too rounded.

For the person who earlier claimed the Cleveland’s were using the Wishbone “C” earlier than the Reds. He didn’t look at the jerseys and any earlier than 1934, the year after Cleveland uses it. I seem to remember this being discussed earlier and between Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, and even Chicago, Cincinnati is the first to use it professionally around 1913.

My New York affiliations:
I grew up, in Brooklyn, a Mets fan (in the late 80’s) because all of my family pulled for them and my father banned me from rooting for the Yankees. It stuck with me for life. I pull for the Giants because LT was the man, nothing to do with Brooklyn. My Father in law came over from Europe in the Joe Willie Namath era, and became a Jets fan, around the same time as the Miracle Mets. I have nothing against the Jets, they are okay, especially since they have a few Buckeyes (I moved to Ohio later on), and I naturally pulled for the Knicks because they are from the city. What a lot of people don’t realize is that Giants Stadium is 3 miles from Manhattan “as the crow flies”…

Of course I didn’t look at the jerseys – I specifically mentioned the caps.
The Reds used it in baseball before the Indians (although as you correctly note, they weren’t the first to use it either), but only on their jerseys. They used a different “C” on their caps. The Indians beat them to it as a cap logo.
#186 by Ricko on 04.24.08 4:49 pm |
I wondered about that Indians two-color “C”, too, when I was kind. And you’re correct, the hat for sale isn’t right. But the C wasn’t misshapen on the original, it just looks that on so many baseball cards because it was slightly larger than a typical hat letter, meaning it sat higher on the center seam. Plus, it was a deeper oval shape than Cincinnati’s. If a photographer aimed upward at a player (which was quite common, esp. for baseball card shots), it created the optical illusion that the letter was flat on bottom and arched on top.
Here’s an essentially straight-on shot showing that the letter was, in fact, symetrical.
(At a Twins game in 1961 I walked down to the railing by the Indians dugout during pre-game warmups to check it out for sure).

How does everyone here dislike those Team Canada black alts? Forget for a second that black isn’t in the Canadian flag (who cares). Consider the entire history of alternate jerseys in hockey.
…are you thinking? Yeah. That’s what I thought.
99% of alt jerseys are pretty much terrible. That black Canadian jersey, with the red, white and gold trim is the creme de la creme in hockey alts.
I can really only think of a few actually nice alts in hockey (not including vintage re-issues or alternates that stuck around long enough to become a main home or away jersey)
*New York Rangers “liberty” jerseys (navy and white versions)
*Chicago Blackhawks black jerseys
*Colorado’s alts were OK, but they pretty much stole the Rangers classic template
*Anaheim’s alts from ‘05-’06 (only listed here because the design was MUCH nicer than the Ducks current garbage unis)

Part of the typical NY-area fans’ Mets/Jets/Islanders or Yankees/Giants/Rangers rubric, in addition to the geography (Queens/Long Island vs. Manhattan/Bronx), is the history. The Yankees, Giants and Rangers all date back to at least the 1920s; the other three were born in the ’60s and ’70s. Part of the whole anti-establishment thing back then would have been to root for the brand-new Mets or Jets while stodgy old folks stuck with the old-school Yankees and Giants.
The teams have been around so long now that younger fans don’t think of it this way, but their parents do (or did).

A few things I didn’t see in the 238 comments above, and probably no one else will see because this thread is old, but…
Isn’t 42 the only number retired by Washington? Didn’t they put all of the Expos numbers back in circulation and now the only place those are on display is at Canadiens games? Sad they can’t find a way to honor Montreal players and D.C. greats together as the St. Louis Rams did with Rams/Cardinals ring of honor. Thought that was worth a mention.
This is getting technical, but the blue in the 42 appears to be Dodgers blue and not Nationals navy. May not be on purpose, but it might be their way of differentiating. Too bad they dropped those other numbers.
And several other people caught the Cardinals being used as an example of both types.
