MLB’s continuing drive to mark every single game with some sort of uniform tribute ventured into new territory last night, as a few teams trotted out the first-ever Earth Day treatments. The Red Sox wore a patch with the logo shown at right (unfortunately, this is the best photo I’ve been able to find), plus I hear they renamed their left-field wall “the Green Monster” for a night. Over in Houston, the ’Stros wore green caps (additional views here and here). The message on the side is “Play Green.”
I’d heard that the Phillies were going to wear green BP jerseys during pregame warm-ups, but I haven’t seen any photos — does anyone know if they actually did this? If so, it’s by far the most appropriate Earth Day gesture, since the green BP tops were no doubt the same ones they wore back on St. Paddy’s Day, which is a much more recycling-related move than manufacturing a bunch of new patches or caps. (Update: I’ve now gotten word that the Phils didn’t wear green BP jerseys last night after all.)
Speaking of recycling, you know that familiar tri-arrowed logo that’s the basis for the Red Sox patch? It’s arguably one of the most successful and recognizable logos of the past 40 years, but it has no legal meaning, no legal owner, is not trademarked, and can be used by anyone — for some background, check out this page and this page, both taken from the book Recycled Papers: The Essential Guide by Claudia Thompson.
Perhaps most interesting of all, the symbol’s designer — a 23-year-old USC student named Gary Anderson, who submitted the design as part of a contest held in conjunction with the original Earth Day back in 1970 — was completely off the grid for years. In that last page I linked to, Claudia Thompson writes, “I have tried to locate Mr. Anderson in the hope of recognizing and reproducing his original pen-and-ink drawing, but unfortunately without success.” That was in 1992; five years later, I wrote an article about recycling imagery (for Spin magazine, of all places) and made my own attempt to track down Anderson, but I came up empty.
Ah, but nobody stays hidden in the broadband era. Two excellent articles about Anderson and his symbol (both downloadable as PDFs) are available here and here. When he came up with the Möbius Strip-based symbol back in 1970, I’m fairly certain he had no idea his creation would end up on Dustin Pedroia’s left sleeve (especially since Pedroia hadn’t yet been born), but that’s recycling for ya.

Betcha Thought I’d Put a Photo of a Can of Spam Here: OK, here’s the deal: Our old spam filter — the one that was generally fine until last Friday night — is still going through this bizarre phase in which it insists on treating every single post as spam. That’s obviously unacceptable. We don’t know why it’s behaving this way (it worked fine for so long). Last night we tried re-installing it, using a newer version of it, using an OLDER version of it — no dice.
The filter we used on Monday and Tuesday is better, but not good enough. As many of you discovered, it treats lots of legitimate posts as spam. What’s worse, it doesn’t allow me (or John, or Bryan) to go into the filter and rescue lost/eaten posts.
So for now we’ve gone back to a security system that requires you to enter a computer-generated code word. I know, I know — it’s a major pain. But this system is better than the similar system we used a while back. For example, if you enter the code incorrectly (or click “Say It!” without remembering to enter the code at all), your post won’t simply be rejected and disappear — instead, your comment will be preserved and you’ll be taken to a “try again” page.
We hope this will be just a temporary fix. Our goal is to get our original spam filter working again. Please bear with us while we try to make that happen.
And just to underscore how necessary it is to have some kind of filter: It took John about 30 seconds last night to disable the old filter and install the new security system. In those 30 seconds, two porno spams were posted on the site. It’s like The Matrix — the machines are fucking relentless, man, and they’re coming after us.

UMKC (university of missouri-kansas city) is changing their logo…again
their original logo was this, was recently ‘updated’ to this (not to be mistaken for this), and now they are having a vote between the two different logos here.

can someone explain the (dubious?) rationale of the patriots going forward in their attempt to trademark ‘19-0′? i understand that they’re trying to market this on toys, clothes, and other crap, but isn’t this the equivalent of driving around in a beater with a ‘kerry/edwards-2004′ bumper sticker still on it?

I find it interesting that the recycle logo is not trademarked and that there is no legal ownership of this logo. I find it to be a noble sentiment.
I do remember hearing the same thing about the PEACE symbol. The peace sign was orignally created to mean “no nukes” but has become a universal symbol for the peace movement. This symbol may even be more recognizable to that of the recycle symbol, but just like the recycle symbol, the peace symbol has never been trademarked and is not legally owned by any one person or group.

those Tiger Stadium pictures should be sent to the government of Detroit as proof that the thing needs to be taken down. I know it’s a very historical place, but I think it’s far more disrespectful to let the park sit there and rot, rather than tearing it down and building a memorial or something. I certainly would’ve liked to have been there in its prime, though.

I looked up yesterday, and there is a mark that was applied for called “19-0 THE PERFECT SEASON, OOPS” by someone in either CT or NY (I forget), doing business as “New York Sports Fans” or something like that.
If the Pats get their registration, that new mark can be blocked.
That’s the reasoning I see.

I really enjoyed the You Tube footage of the
1939 Chicago Cubs in spring training. I especially
liked the footage of Dizzy Dean displaying his
accuracy by throwing balls through that window pane.It is interesting to see that the Cubs have been wearing the circular style numbers as far back as the late 1930s.
It is a bloody disgrace to see the current
condition of Tiger Stadium. It is another example
of an opportunity lost on the part of the City of
Detroit. After the filming of the Billy Crystal’s
movie 61*,the city could have removed the
scoreboards, the plush seats with the Tigers logo
and many other items and sold item and used the
revenue for inner city youth sports and arts programs. Instead, those items rot with weeds surrounding item.

Some words are in fonts harder to read than others. Actually, that’s a misnomer, because you’re seeing a graphic of a word. You can’t copy/paste it because it isn’t text, meaning you either have to read it and recreate it (sometimes hard) or play it and type what you hear (could make things easier). Basically the city couldn’t make up their damn mind.

I know for a fact that the Phillies did NOT wear green BP jerseys last night. They wore their standard ugly jerseys. I know this because I was forced to watch some of their BP while my husband filled out another comment card at Coors Field complaining about the poor way season ticket holders are treated by Coors Field employees. Oh, and the fact that ARAMARK runs the dugout store, and not the Rockies themselves, so if they don’t carry the 5950 in your size, too bad. Go across town to one of the team owned stores.

Long section in Seattle Post-Intelligencer today regarding George Sherrill’s flat brim:
Sherrill straightened out, looking good as O’s closer
Jones’ biggest impact as an everyday player has been with glove
By DAVID ANDRIESEN
P-I REPORTER
All anyone in Baltimore wants to talk about is George Sherrill’s hat.
Sherrill, in case you’ve forgotten, wears his cap with the bill flat and straight. In his time with the Mariners, nobody seemed to care much. But in Baltimore, where the left-hander is the Orioles’ new closer, they’re abuzz about it as if it’s some sort of trademark.
“I couldn’t count how many questions I’ve been asked about it,” Sherrill said Tuesday. “It was flat when I was here and it wasn’t a big deal, but I guess I’m on the East Coast so I’m more visible now.”
For the record, Sherrill says he could never curve the bill of his cap evenly, always ending up with it lopsided. So he just quit trying when he was in the minor leagues.
“They were wearing me out in San Antonio, and finally I was, ‘You know what? I’m just going to wear it how they give it to me,’ ” he said. “I started wearing it flat. And they say it sits on top of my head like a train conductor’s hat, but I think that’s just what size it is or something. It’s not like I look in the mirror before I go out to the bullpen or anything.”

It was mine…I was just trying to all a little more of the Irish’s color scheme, and I thought it’d be too much green if I did them up to match the jersey. So I picked blue w/ white stripes.
On the issue of two stripes vs. three…I had originally left the Adidas logo out, unaware of Michael’s stance on logo creep. But he thought it’d be more authentic to have it in there (as did I), so I added it at the last minute, not even thinking about the socks which I’d already colored.
As far as the logo behind her…on the printed version I sent Michael, it’s a big gold “ND”, not the Fighting Leprechaun as it is on Paul’s link. I didn’t like the way it looked when printed…it was kinda muddy and taking attention away from the figure. As far as the direction he’s facing, I used Chris Creamer’s exhaustive and absolutely essential site for reference, and he has it facing that way, so…I dunno.

I’m sorry, but what is the purpose of having three different colored pants, kind of overkill I feel.
Should have one color to go with your home jersey and one color to go with your away jersey, and THAT’S IT!! Three colors for one jersey?!?! Sheesh….

A little off topic but did anyone notice what was written in the dirt behind home plate at the Mariners game?
Maybe it was something like “R.I.P. Sonics”

Check it out. The NHL is poking fun at (and profiting off) the Sean Avery stick-waving incident via t-shirts.

Just checking to see if the “Anti-spam word” is case-sensitive or not.
Yesterday I attemtped to post numerous times about “The U” suing University of Nebraska - Omaha about the helmet logo, and I wnated to link to this helmet, which is worn by United High School in Alexis, IL - ust hoping that the lawyers representing “The U” decide not to go after a small school in rural Illinois - but ya never know

His site’s outstanding, but unfortunately it’s not infallible.

The M’s paid homage to catcher John Marzano, a former Mariner who died in the last week or so by writing his name in the dirt behind home plate.

According to that link, the NHL has denied the report.
I know it’s a shock that the New York Post might actually gets its facts wrong, but….

I’m really surprised by the lack of change in catching equipment over the years. Yes, the style of the mask has changed (thanks to the NHL), and today’s chest protectors don’t look as much like the blankets between my grandmother’s china, but the overall look and function appear to be the same!

I know “The U” went after Union High School in Tulsa a few years back. They came to an agreement. I’m sure that meant money.

Sad news from a Minnesota sports fan about new jerseys: I hate ‘em. I don’t like the new era of jerseys at all. In my opinion, the less the better. I don
