New ESPN column today. Thought it was running tomorrow, but here it is.
Meanwhile: As you can see at right, our latest city-specific logo mashup, submitted yesterday by Michael Boyer, is devoted to Philadelphia (here’s a larger view). And that’s appropriate, because I have a bunch of Philly-related news to announce.
First, I’m planning a Uni Watch party in Philadelphia for next Saturday, April 19th. It’ll take place at 5pm at Bob & Barbara’s Lounge, a lovable dive that’s a longtime fave of mine. Hope to see lots of you there.
Also of interest: Earlier that same afternoon, I’ll be at the National Constitution Center, where the “Baseball as America” exhibit is currently on display. From noon to 3pm, Mitchell & Ness prexy Peter Caporino and researcher Jared Wheeler will be making a special presentation, which Jared describes like so:
We’re going to be displaying a uniform history of the Phillies and Athletics, during their time in Philadelphia. It will mostly consist of jerseys and jackets. We’ll be set up in the lobby area of the Constitution Center, where there will be other things going on. (i.e., old ballplayers speaking). You’ll definitely meet some interesting characters who are also extremely knowledgeable about uniforms. It will kind of be a glimpse of what Mitchell and Ness used to be!
Cool, right? I’ll be there for that, too.
My final Philly-related bulletin involves an event just outside the city limits (or, more specifically, just across the Delaware River), in Camden, New Jersey. Camden is home to the Camden Riversharks, whose management has graciously agreed to hold a special uni-centric promotion on June 5th. I believe the working title is “Old-Time Baseball Night,” and it will involve the following: All members of the Riversharks will wear striped stirrups, which I will pick out for them (I may also go into the clubhouse to give instrux and pointers, hopefully accompanied by a video crew); I will throw out the first pitch; there will be a special pregame Uni Watch gathering at the stadium; and the team is offering a big discount for Uni Watch readers, with all box seats (normally priced from $11 to $20) available for $8 apiece.
To take advantage of the discount, here’s what you need to do:
• First, go to this link. You’ll see the Riversharks’ April schedule.
• Then use the drop-down menu to choose “June 2008.” Once you’ve done that, click on the June 5th game. And then click on “Let me pick my seats from a seating chart.” You should then see a diagram of the Sharks’ stadium.
• See the teal seats right behind home plate, and the yellow seats extending down the baselines? All of those seats are available for the $8 price. Just click on the section you want and choose your tickets from the resulting seat listing (”Eligible for Stirrups” means you can get the discounted price).
• When checking out, enter the promotional code “stirrups” in the appropriate field.
Super-duper thanks to Philly reader Morris Levin for coming up with this idea, pitching it to the Sharks, and then acting as an intermediary between me and the team. This whole thing is really his baby — I’m just happy to be along for the ride. Big thanks also to JC Williams and all the other great Riversharks staffers. Looking forward to a fun night in June!
And now here’s a word from Vince: I could lie and say that I was waiting until the NCAA championship game was over before I scored the Uni Watch Pool, but that would be lying. With all of the No. 1 seeds making it to the Final Four, the championship game had no bearing on the contest results. The real reason the results were delayed is that I was quite busy and watching lots of miserable Tribe baseball.
Anyway, the results are finally tabulated, and if you didn’t have some combination including either Davidson (a possible 30 points), Villanova (24 points), or Western Kentucky (24 points), don’t bother looking for your name in the winners’ list below. Also, the tiebreaker came into effect, with fourth and fifth place being decided by the 143 total points in the championship game.
Without further ado:
First Place: Jim Satriano, 84 points (Michigan State, Marquette, West
Virginia, Davidson, Villanova, St. Joseph’s)
Second Place: Tyler Young, 82 points (Wisconsin, Pitt, Xavier, Davidson,
Villanova, Louisville)
Third Place: Brian Ashbaugh, 80 points (St. Joseph’s, Davidson,
Villanova, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Butler)
Fourth Place: Eric Sigman, 74 points (Siena, Western Kentucky, Davidson, Baylor, Butler, St. Mary’s; tiebreaker guess: 141)
Fifth Place: Carmelo Kuffel, 74 points (Butler, Siena, Davidson, West
Virginia, UCLA, Texas; tiebreaker guess: 148)
Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all 400 readers who participated. If you think I’ve erred in scoring your entry, contact me asap. The five winners, meanwhile, will be hearing from Paul momentarily regarding their prizes.
Uni Watch News Ticker: If you go to this page and scroll down about halfway (or search on “Topes Tower”), you’ll find a small news item about the Albuquerque Isotopes’ new bullpen cart. … “The Indianapolis Motor Speedway celebrated the upcoming inaugural MotoGP race by having 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden take some laps on their newly reconfigured road course,” writes Doug Mooney. “They first had him take a lap on an Indian motorcycle that raced at the first IMS race in 1909, complete with vintage racing outfit. Looks like a cool idea until you see the Red Bull logo on the ‘vintage’ lid.” And for good measure, Doug also created a Detroit logo mashup. … Jere Smith and Mario Fontana both report that the retired numbers inside Fenway Park have been updated from this to this (note the outlines on the façade, where the previous numbers had been). “Also interesting to note that Buckner chose (or was given) a No. 6 jersey when he threw out the first pitch on Tuesday,” adds Jere. “That’s the number he wore in ’86. He wore 16 when he arrived in ’84, then wore 6 for ’85-’87, and then wore 22 when he returned in 1990.” And Mario adds the following: “They also added a giant ‘380′ sign on the right field bullpen. But look closely, you can still see the chalk guide markings — very bush league!” … Here’s a first: The Rays have apparently tried to “mow” their new sunburst logo into the outfield turf at the Trop (with thanks to Cork Gaines). … Cool auction here for one of the Denver Bears’ “strike zone” uniforms (with thanks to Todd Radom). … John Massingill notes that the Norfolk Tides’ uniforms have really gone down the crapper. … A few days ago I showed photos of my super-cool vintage jacket from the Army volleyball team, complete with a chenille volleyball patch on one sleeve. But Scott Imus notes that the patch actually looks more like a water polo ball — and Army does indeed have a men’s water polo team, while they only have a women’s volleyball team. So it appears that I actually have a super-cool water polo jacket, which makes it even cooler than I thought. … Not quite a mashup, but David Ribar says he painted this when he was a teenager. “Obviously, I am not a professional artist, and the fountain is kind of weak, but I’m proud of it,” he says. “Last year my wife was going to throw it out because it didn’t go with anything in our new house. I sold it on eBay instead for a few dollars. In reality, the buyer probably took a good look at it and threw it away. But in my mind, its hanging in a central location of their Pittsburgh-themed game room.” … 42er updates here and here. … With the Stanley Cup playoffs underway, Rob Ullman has prepared a new set of hockey-themed cheeesecake illos (or is it the other way around?). Check out his full gallery of playoff artwork here. … Once upon a time there were American League balls and National League balls. But then the separate league offices and identities were dismantled, which left us with an all-purpose MLB ball (plus an All-Star Game ball in July and a World Series ball in October). But check out what Chad Gilman spotted: a Shea Stadium’s final season ball! Turns out they’re for sale (big surprise), and that the Yankees have one, too. I got that last photo from this page, which shows a much wider range of commemorative baseballs than I realized existed. … Lincoln King notes that Aramis Ramirez has the Dominican flag on his batting gloves, and that a PNC Park vendor was wearing an old-school uniform last night.

It looks like Prince Fielder is going to stick with his Babe Ruth look this season, as he continued with it throughout the Reds series.

Thank goodness someone got a screengrab of that PNC Park vendor. I saw him on opening day working in the super expensive seats behind home plate and did not have my camera with me. He was totally decked out in what appeared to be in an early 190o’s era uniform, complete with stirrups.

That’s clsoe to a 3 hour trip for me, but if fate has it, I will be at the Wagner Football Golf Outing that day which would cut a large chunk of the trip out for me. Maybe do-able. For 8 bucks, how can you go wrong?
I’ll tell you how…the forty bucks in gas it will cost to get home!

They are cool. If you could have integrated the Flyers logo into the Fabric a bit more, it would have been GREAT.
The Detroit championship component as well could have been less obvious. Maybe Roman Numerals or something worked into the design.
A New York, or Boston mashup would be cool. Is it against protocol to onclude the prominent college teams of the area as well, or would that make it too labor intensive and busy?

I’m still waiting to see a Boston one (I’d do it, if it didn’t feel like cheating.) It would be so easy. A Bruin, dressed like a leprechaun wearing red stirrups and a three cornered hat. It begs to be done.

Yeah I was sitting about 12 rows behind his section, the other vendor was also wearing a retro pirate uni, but his didn’t look as good (I also think it was just a mixture of uniforms). That section (The Home Plate Club) gets free food, so those vendors just go around tossing food and beverages to everyone.

Then don’t wear a jersey. It’s a favorite place of mine, the beer is cheap, and it won’t be crowded at 5pm, which makes it perfect for a get-together. If you were hoping for a sports bar, forget it — I love sports and I love bars, but I hate sports bars.

I was just coming on here to post about this. Since Bud extended the 42 thing to this year, the Brewers decided one guy would wear it and they pulled names from a hat and Prince will be wearing the 42. The article about it includes this paragraph:
Fielder, who visited the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City over the winter to accept the Josh Gibson Legacy Award, has been wearing his socks high this season as a nod to the great players who came before him. The opportunity to wear No. 42 is a great honor, he said.

The Metric system is actually a much more reasonable unit of measurement. However, if you want a real challenge try teaching both systems to eighth graders simultaneously! It would probably rank up there around Dante’s sixth circle of hell, ahead of being locked in a closet full of tarantulas and right after Birthday parties at Chuck E’ Cheese!

I’m sure a lot of engineers and scientists would disagree with you there. I mean, what’s easier to remember- that there’s 550 ft-lb/s^2 in 1 horsepower, or that theres 1 N-m/s^2 in 1 Watt? Once you try to wrap your head around the difference between a pound-force and a pound-mass, you realize that the SI (metric) system is much easier. Since you love the English system so much, I’m sure you can all tell us your exact mass in slugs, right?

#56 by Graf Zeppelin on 04.10.08 10:32 am |
The metric system is much more intuitive than the largely arbitrary English system. Metric units of measure (distance, volume, mass) are all interrelated. For example, one cubic centimeter equals one milliliter of volume (1000cm³, i.e., 10cm x 10cm x 10cm, = 1 liter); one milliliter of water equals one gram of mass (1 liter = 1 kg). There is no such relationship between inches and pounds.

Oh no, a conversation about the Metric system, I think I’m starting to feel a headache coming on!!!
You see, in sixth grade science we were taught about the metric system and were learning conversions within the metric system and with the standard system. For whatever reason I struggled GREATLY with this unit and it got me the lovingly, we’re not laughing at you we’re laughing WITH you (yeah RIGHT!) nickname “Mr. Metric” from my dear old Dad (God rest his soul)
Now in my adult years, I have a better grasp of the systems thankfully! And as a huge Formula 1 fan, it helps to know because a lot dealings in meters and liters come into play when discussions of braking zones, speed traps and fuel loads start (which is often).

Hank, then you’re free to ignore the meters on the bottom and just look at the feet. Nobody’s asking them to dump feet entirely and make everything metric. Just don’t erase the world-standard measurements that are already there. I don’t have a problem with them writing “67.6 oz” on a 2-liter bottle of soda; why can’t you put up with meters on the outfield wall? And feet still get top billing — they’re written in the brighter color, and on top.

Such a great idea for the Riversharks game!
That stadium is quirky.. instead of having the outfield face the Philly skyline across the river, it faces the underneath of the Ben Franklin Bridge.
Makes for some good visuals though.
I was originally under the impression that this was because the point of all home plates have to “point” south in all professional baseball games due to some old folklore about where the first organized baseball game was played.
Anybody know anything about the home plate thing?

Never heard that.
But their stadium can’t face Philadelphia because Camden is east of Philly. Facing west would force the batters to stare into sunsets every night, which might impact offensive production.

Except the rest of the world does. The metric system is a much more accurate measurement system. Science uses it exclusively over the imperial system.

I’ve taken a stab at a Toronto Mashup. (Sorry if someone else has already done it & I missed it.)
Whaddya think?
I didn’t include anything to represent championships, just components from the teams’ current logos. For those who are unfamiliar with the CFL, the “A” on the Jay/Raptor’s chest is the current Toronto Argonauts football logo. (Regardless of how many games they play here, they’re still the Buffalo Bills until someone says otherwise.) Also the red Toronto banner at the bottom is from the Toronto FC logo, for those of y’all who aren’t soccer fans.
One other note I’ve been meaning to post for the last little while:
A while ago we were talking about “most jersey” players… Guys who, although not that well-travelled, nonetheless had worn a ton of jerseys over their career. With his return to the fold, Toronto Blue Jay Shannon Stewart has to be near the all-time record.
By my count, he’s now worn 5 home, 5 away and a whopping 10 alternate uniforms in Toronto alone! (Not even mentioning the many various combinations he wore in Minny and Oakland, his only 2 other teams.) Plus there was an unused alternate jersey in 1997 that almost upped his total one more!

Yeah, I felt dirty for getting it started.
Man, I hope Nyjer Morgan hits .500 or something for a few weeks so the rest of my Buccos copy his style. Although the old-school bumblebee stripes would be even better.

considering the first game took place in Hoboken, which it to the north of Camden across the river from NYC, that wouldnt work out.

I apologize. I missed Paul’s memo.
By the way, a contact from Hockey Canada said that while those new jerseys are vintage, they’re missing the nostalgia.
He was “enthusiastically unimpressed”, especially since the Winnipeg Falcons jerseys were a resounding hit.

Don’t all of them face east, giving us the term “southpaws” for lefties?

Right, the sun would be brutal for batters as the sun sets, especially since there aren’t any trees to block out the sun, as there are in Pittsfield (where Wahconah Park, one of the more famous west-facing ballparks, is located).
Just watching the 1972 All-Star Game and the broadcasters commenting on Carl Yastrzemski debuting the Red Sox pullover jerseys and elastic pants that the team would wear the rest of the season. “(They’re like) the new knits you’re seeing on many of the ballclubs.”

Here’s a quick Boston mash-up I did.. and yes I realize that I forgot the Patriots, but I just couldn’t find a way to fit Flying Elvis in there and not take away from the classic look.

according to wiki…
A left-handed individual may be known as a southpaw, particularly in a sports context. It is widely accepted that the term originated in the United States, in the game of baseball.[23] Ballparks are often designed so that right-handed batters are facing east, so that the afternoon or evening sun does not shine in their eyes. This means that left-handed pitchers are throwing with their south-side arm. However, the Oxford English Dictionary lists a non-baseball citation for “south paw”, meaning a punch with the left hand, as early as 1848,[24] just three years after the first organized baseball game.

Fourth paragraph in this article says the Magic are getting new unifroms, and Jameer Nelson wants the pintripes back. As someone who used to be in a band called pinstripe mystery I have no objection.

When pro baseball first started, there were bleacher or stands only behind home plate, so they aligned the fields so that the evening sun would always be blocked by those stands. If a lefthanded pitcher stands on the rubber, he is facing first base, and facing south (I had to doodle it to make sure). Hence, the name ’southpaw’. Similarly, you will almost always find football fields/stadia running north/south so that sideline bleachers will block the sun and so that no team is ever moving directly into the sun.

GAHHH!!! I’ll miss the first Philly Uni-Watch Party since I’ve become addicted to this site. My firehouse’s 100th anniversary banquet is that night. Needless to say there aren’t a lot of us chosen people in our house for them to schedule it on such a night.
I should make the ‘Sharks game. Been there a few times, and it’s a great place to see a game. I’d recommend it.
