So last night Kirsten and I are walking to the IFC Center in Manhattan (to see this), and there’s this guy standing there on the sidewalk, wearing one of those cheapo green molded-plastic “Irish” hats, waving his arms, and yelling, “Three-dollar beers! Cheap beer! Three-dollar beers!”
Ah, St. Paddy’s Day in New York — what a total frat party from hell charming ritual. I wore green, naturally. The fact that I also wear green on many — indeed, most — of the other 364 days of the year is of little consequence, for March 17th is a day when we can all embrace our inner drunk Irishman, a day when the world’s most deliciously verdant hue is in gratifyingly ample supply. And nowhere was this more true yesterday than at a few gazillion genuinely awful New York bars in the world of uniforms.
(And yes, smart guy, I realize there are actually 365 non-St. Paddy’s Day days this year, but that just wouldn’t have sounded right in a sentence, y’know?)
Herewith, a survey of the day’s emerald events:
• In San Antonio, the Celtics broke out their green-and-golds again. I refuse to believe Sam Cassell is truly Irish until the DNA tests come back, but it’s still a good look, no? After the game, Paul Pierce treated everyone to a Shamrock Shake at Mickey D’s.
• I’m less fond of the Bulls’ jade attire, mainly because the black trim reminds me too much of those annoying Celtics alternates (which they should just ditch in favor of the green-and-golds, am I right?).
• The Knicks’ St. Paddy’s day uni has always struck me as a bit odd. One the one hand, I love green and orange as a color combo. But it’s an autumnal color combo, and it just doesn’t feel right as we’re moving into spring (except maybe on David Lee, what with his red hair and all). Let’s just blame it on Isiah, like everything else, and go back to the drawing board.
• Did you know that Toronto has a big Irish population? Neither did anyone in Salt Lake City, until the Raptors showed up dressed like this (additional views here and here). And look, they even had celtic dancers on hand, or at least that’s what the AP caption says. I think it’s actually all the wives from Big Love.
• The Sonics — no, wait, that’s just their regular green uni.
• Over on the diamond, the Reds are the team that pioneered the special St. Paddy’s Day uni, but they couldn’t be bothered yesterday. Fortunately, several others did, but most of them went the lazy route, just using green caps (most of which had nasty logo creep and adjusta-straps) and/or green bases. Pfeh.
• I believe only two teams went with green jerseys: the Phillies and Twins. And after seeing them, the lazy route is looking better all the time, no?
And lest we forget, one team made a very special St. Patrick’s Day gesture: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the — uh, see for yourself (additional jaw-dropping views here and here).
Uni Watch News Ticker: Tommy Lasorda must’ve read yesterday’s post. He switched to stirrups! … Really interesting little piece here about how Govs. Spitzer and McGreevey and their respective wives wore virtually identical “uniforms” when announcing their resignations. … Bill Turianski has created the latest in his series of sports maps, this one showing the location of the NCAA Tournament teams. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: A bunch of new pics from the upcoming George Clooney flick Leatherheads have hit the web, and goddamn do those uniforms look sweet (additional pics here, here, here, here, and here). And check out the refs. … “I went to the SPHL game between the Huntsville (Alabama) Havoc and the Columbus (Georgia) Cottonmouths on Saturday night and took along my camera to snap some shots of the Havoc’s St. Paddy’s Day uni,” writes Zack Bennett). “Instead, I found Columbus wearing one of the more unique number fonts I’ve ever seen [additional examples here and here].” I think we should get all animal-named teams to go this route — imagine the Dolphins wearing dolphin-patterned numbers. … Cleveland news from Vince, who says a local radio station is reporting that the Browns will wear white helmets for one game next season, to honor the 1946-49 squads that won the AAFC championship four years in a row. No comment yet from the team. … Mark Milner sent along some pics of a few vintage curling sweaters and jackets, as seen hereand here. … Looks like Curtis Granderson was wearing navy tights over black socks the other day (good spot by Christian Bitto). … MLB umpire Rob Drake has a blog, and this recent entry includes some info on the umps’ uniforms (nice find by David Arnott). … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Great photo here of Saginaw High in Michigan (here’s the rear view). Now they just need a seven-footer and Spud Webb to complete the effect. … Would someone please buy this man a regular cap? … Jesus, just shoot me now and get it over with.

i love those celtic gold and green uni’s! Also, I think it should be a league wide NBA rule for everyone playing on St. Patty’s Day to wear green just to give us more to talk about with all the monstrocities that would ensue.

The Knicks’ St. Pat’s jerseys contain orange because that is a major color of the Irish flag (and has major symbolism for the Protestant faith in Ireland).

Paul -
I received a book a while back (Cubs Journal – Year by Year & Day by Day with the Chicago Cubs Since 1876) by John Snyder. I believe this is one in a series of similar books about the histories of MLB teams. I was reading through it this to help get in a baseball state of mind, and realized there are two significant areas of interest to Uniwatch readers. One, of course, are the enormous number of uniform images (note, all in black and white). One of the things I noticed: It doesn’t look like the Cubs started up the “long standing tradition” of pinstripes until 1959!
Another area of interest are the different team names that were used (it was explained early in the book that in the early years of baseball, teams didn’t have names. You just had “Chicago” play “Boston”. The newspapers of the day would provide nicknames based on the personality of the team). What I found to be some of the more interesting names connected to the team:
- White Stockings (and eventually: White Sox!) 1876-87, because of the color of … well … their socks.
- Orphans 1898-1901, because Cap Anson was fired after 19 seasons as player-manager, and the players lost their “Pop”.
- Nationals 1905-07, just because of the league they played in.
No, I’m not connected to the book in any way shape of form (other than owning a copy), so I don’t want to sound like I’m advertising for them, but it is a bit of a must read for Cub fans (and other versions for other team fans)! One thing … it was written at the end of the 2004 season, so you don’t get any details beyond that (at least in the edition I received), but since there haven’t been any uniform changes since then, who cares!!!!

I work for the Cottonmouths during game days and I love the fact they went back to the snake numbers this year after leaving them for the past 3-4 seasons. The one thing I don’t like is how the 1 turned out on the jersey. If you look at this pic again the guy second from the right is number 21 Ryan Rutz but looks like number 27. To compare the 7 look at the guy third from left (to the right of Dan Leslie and right in front the coach Jerome Bechard) Mark Prentice who is number 37.

As a softball ump for almost 20 years, it is amazing the change in umpire equipment sales: when I started, you could only buy gear from the Amateur Softball Association, or maybe a few sporting goods stores. NOW there literally dozens of websites/stores that cater to sports officials exclusively. The quality of the gear has improved, also – no more stuff that was just redone catcher’s gear! I help train our new high school umps every year, and we tell them that to be properly equipped will cost them about $500 TO START! Loses us at least one or two candidates each year…

Gotta say that I like the Knicks’ green-and-orange alts. It doesn’t seem particularly “autumnal” to me, though — at least, no more than any other color combination. As long as the orange isn’t the dominant color, that combo just always works for me.
But that’s probably because it’s the color combo of my alma mater (and current employer), the University of La Verne. Sadly, though, someone over in the athletics department must not be a big fan of orange, though, since it’s been slowly disappearing from the various unis for a a couple years now.
The basketball teams are now left with a sadly generic green-and-white kit: road and home. Soccer and volleyball still have some orange highlights that work. And you’ve gotta love how the baseball team rocks the striped stirrups. (But softball? Eh, not so much.)

I’m just getting into umpiring. I think $500 is a very conservative number, unless you already have some equipment (helmet and shin guards, etc). I think I spent over $800, and did not spend that much. I heard in our annual meeting that college umpires are now being required to wear navy shirts. Very interesting, especially with all of the shirt combinations out there.

Do you know this with certainty, or is this simply your thinking on the matter? I find the issue most intriguing, and if you or someone else can cite to any authorities on the subject, I would like to read them.
Do these teams own the trademark to the fonts, such that no one can use the font for any reason? Or are the fonts protected only in conjunction with the team colors? Or are the fonts not protected at all?

It would have been nice if The Smoking Gun article had a link to the cease-and-desist letter from MLB, to see whether it cited any authority in support of its position.

I’m getting into baseball.
When you think about it, our association doesn’t have us wear same color shirts, so on any given week, we can wear up to five combinations. When you realize all the combinations out there, it gets spendy. I think the shirts we got at honigs were $32. I got four of them, which doesn’t help either. Two pairs of pants, plate shoes and base shoes. Really, the two items that I thought would be the worst weren’t that bad, the helmet and chest protector. Both were under $100. I went full cage instead of old school with just the mask.

2 dark blue ASA shirts – 1 normal 1 plate

1 plain navy blue ball bag for high school
brand new Wilson Dyna Lite Mask
Pro Nine chest protector

New Balance turf shSot Bilt mid ankle plate shoes

It is possible to trademark a font assuming you designed it.
Also, just because he pulled the site doen’t mean that he was violating the law. All it means is that it wasn’t worth 100 grand in legal fees to prove he wasn’t violating the law.
#105 by Jay on 03.18.08 3:56 pm |
MLB is likely justified in going after the site in that a tee-shirt in team colors and fonts very likely creates confusion with the trademark.
You’ll be suprised what is tradmarked:
http://tess2.uspto.g...
This is arguably worse than Wisconsin going after high schoold using the motion ‘W’ because high schools, by and large, are not trying to turn a profit on the trademark.
In the end, even that doesn’t matter. Intent of the infringer doesn’t really matter.

Good stuff. The search on the link had expired, but is this the gist of the issue:
“A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination of words, phrases, symbols or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.”
Just a question, could free distribution be allowed?

Hello everyone
i have taken the liberty of creating a Uni Watch braket challenge on the ESPN website. You can join the site and group here.(http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage )
The name of the group is Uni Watch Readers. i hop Paul endorses this and joins himself. Maybe the winner can get some stirrups! I kid, but seriously, i think we have more than enough readers and fans to make this work
Thanks

hey does anyone know like a local store to get baseball stirrups? I have always wanted some and now ill be played varsity baseball and I think it would be cool to be the only one out there with stirrups but my local scheels does not carry any. All they have is the fake ones witht are just socks. I know UNI Watch readers will probably know where to get some. Obviosly the internest is easist but I’d rather just buy some normally.

I don’t care if it was St. Patrick’s Day. There’s something about the Knicks wearing Green that violates the time-space continuum.
This season keep getting more and more horrible as it goes on.

A few months ago, Brian took issue with Coppin State’s CSUCSUCSUCSUCSUCSUCSU business – saw a couple of minutes of the “play in game” tonight and they truly are awful.
However, I have to take issue with the “shorts” that Mount St. Mary’s are wearing. A tad on the long side I would say – one dude looked like he forgot to take off the warm up gear. Good grief.

He usually wears #4 but he actually lost that jersey, so he opted to wear #3 instead, but that jersey didn’t have the official NCAA logo patch, so he had to wear the #51 instead.

I’m with most everybody else. The Knicks uni is OK because it matches the Irish flag, meaning it actually is more logical than the others.
Based on color scheme, I guess the Phillies and Cardinals were celebrating Italy Day.
