I don't fault the Mets for using "Los Mets." I don't think anybody, Latino or not, knows what exactly a "Met" is. So don't even ask me how to say "Met" in Spanish.
It would be a rather mellifluous Los Metropolitanas, if I'm not mistaken, which I think could be shortened to Los Metros, or, sure, Los Mets.

I love Stephen Colbert, especially when he performs as his alter ego, Esteban Colberto. Love the chicas!
And if'n yer gonna honor the largest existing ethnic groups in your city, lemme know when the St. Louis Cardinals break out their "Das Kardinäles" shirts (with the Birds On the Bat, of course!)

And yes, I know "Das Brauers" and "Das Rottönes" could join in...
Good call! Die Brauer and Die Roten would be more linguistically accurate German opponents for Die Kardinäle.

(Don't feel bad--there are 12 different ways that plurals can be formed in German!)

I'll note that nothing gets me more riled up than reading anglicizations in today's German media... and one of the most bizarre things a hockey fan can look at is the standings for the top flight of German ice hockey: there is a mix of English and German team nicknames, including an English nickname that makes no sense whatsoever.

It made me happy to no end to read "Hamburger Tiefkühlschränke" in the Hamburg newspapers when I was there last year.

I don't fault the Mets for using "Los Mets." I don't think anybody, Latino or not, knows what exactly a "Met" is. So don't even ask me how to say "Met" in Spanish. However, Spurs and Sun are easily translated. Slapping "Los" in front of "Spurs" just looks lazy. I agree with Paul -- only the SF Giants and the Milwaukee Brewers have actually pulled off this concept.

Here are a few teams with strange Spanish translations that I'd like to see give this concept a try:
White/Red Sox = Calcetines Blancos/Rojos

Rangers = Guardabosques
Mavericks = Inconformistas

Good luck reaching the Latino market, Calcetines Rojos de Boston!

As a Central American who was raised in the states, I think the NBA promotion is a great idea with unfortunately flawed execution. It seems to me that the NBA is doing an Hispanic tribute targeted at their anglo fan base. It's almost like the uniform equivalent of Taco Bell- it is not remotely close to Mexican Food but American kids seem to love it. Taco Bell would be the first to tell you that their intention is to sell to Anglos not latinos. Likewise, it is almost as if the NBA slaps a Spanish word on the uni and the anglo fans will say, "Well Done!", while the Hispanics are offended by the gesture.
I think an elegant alternative to "Los" nameplates would be to outfit the teams in a Mexican colorway (Green, white, and red ala St. Patrick's Day unis). I realize that Mexicans aren't the only Hispanics out there but the majority of NBA latino fans are. (Maybe one team can be in the Mexican colors and the other in Puerto Rico's colors.) I just think this would make a bigger splash among the targeted audience.
