Ah yes, the two things that shame me the most about my beloved Cardinals.
Is it their insistence on signing trash-heap pitchers to save a few paltry million dollars each year? No.
Is it their mortgaging the future so they could win the 2006 World Series? No.
It’s the fake stirrups and the fact that they keep inviting Bob Knight back to the stadium. Man, if they would stop doing that, they might be the perfect franchise.

Wearing real stirrups isn’t easy. It involves a lot of bending over and coordination to hook that stirrup over your heel. LaRussa has a hard time with that when he’s working off that hangover from the night before. Therefore he sticks with the fake stirrups.
Plus, no matter how cool stirrups are, nobody over the age of 50 wear them. Seriously, does anyone want to see Don Zimmer wear stirrups?

Why can’t the fake stirrups connect beneath the heal? There have been many technological advances since the fake stirrup first appeared, I would think that nowadays sock manufacturers could make the fakes look more real. Realer looking fakes could maintain the cool looking aesthetic of stirrups while simultaneously maintaining the ease of a single pair of socks.

I’m pretty sure the Cards always wear Red hats during ST. I remember back in ‘01 or ‘02 I first noticed this, and got excited thinking they’d be wearing red all the time! However, it ends as soon as the regular season begins.

Duncan obviously knew at one point how to wear the stirrups.
I recall that the A’s of the late 80s were pretty bad fake-stirrup offenders and the Duncan-LaRussa tandem was right there for that. They’ve probably worn the fakies ever since.

I think it has a lot to do with what equipment they bring down to Spring Training. Given the number of players on the spring roster they’d have to worry about having two sets of helmets, etc. for all those players. So since they’ll be using the red helmets on the road they probably figure they might as well wear red caps and match. I think the Tigers do this as well.

I never really liked the navy road hats either. It doesn’t really match anything, considering they wear red undershirts and red shoes on the road. (See for yourself.) All it matches are the belts and super-thin borders around the numbers, but in my opinion, it doesn’t help bring out those colors at all. It looks like its only purpose is to sell. I vote red all the time as well, because cardinals are red. Plus, I think gray and red is an awesome combination.

I too agree with Art. I love the red caps, however I do like the navy caps as well. The third cap with the navy crown and red bill has got to go!
On another off topic note: I’ve e-mailed the person from the Helmet Project a few times with no response. I have something he was looking for and I want to send it to him. Does anyone have an address or any kind of contact info? There’s nothing on the site!

Even if you don’t love (or even like) the Cardinals navy caps, at least they wear the their caps as designated. You don’t see their road caps worn at home.

For years, my alma mater used a Block W as their helmet logo. In 2006, they decided to go with the school’s name, Wagner, in cursive. Subsequently, they returned to the Block W in 2007. The Helmet Project needed one of the cursive decals, which I promptly fetched.

Also a cardinals fan here, and every year I hear about how they should go to Red full time after seeing in spring training.
I share those wishes with everyone else. But the Navy hat not only looks good, its a nod to history.
They wore red hats from 1900 to 1908, with white mixed in as well.
Then they went to white hats from 1909 to 1940. That year the started wearing blue hats full time until 1964. (in 65 it was as is now, red at home, blue on the road) From then on it was red all the time until 1992 and the uniform redesign brought back the blue away caps.
I like how they look and like I said, this is the hat that Stan Musial wore and many other great Cardinals in the 40s & 50s. I’d like to see perhaps the blue hat only go to sundays or something. I’d like to keep it in the mix, but they look really good in red on the road.

So I participated in the tryouts for a local men’s wood bat league today. Things went great, I hit and fielded great. It was also my first time playing in stirrups, I loved the look. One problem though: I sprained my ankle really bad when my cleat got caught sliding into second during baserunning drills. Hopefully the stirrups are not cursed.
Speaking of stirrups, I wanted to make sure I hadn’t introduced any bad mojo by wearing them improperly. Does the higher side go in the front or in the rear? I bought a pair of ankle stirrups, but I need a new color (red for the Indians) and am going to go for the 9″ calf high ones. Any help with making sure I put them on right would be greatly appreciated

I was watching SportsCenter this morning, and saw the Cardinals highlight, and I could put my finger on it, but their uniforms road uniforms look really good. And I finally just figured it out. It was their hats! They need to ditch the blue hat, and keep that red hat for home and away.

Phil, even if they’re stirrups, they showed a lot of leg there at B-C with the high pantlegs, unlike certain players in the majors who wear them like pajamas. And alas, no gold “C” in “Ucla” on the baseball uniform for the obvious reasons that has been mentioned earlier

Some DI lacrosse teams have been wearing lime green shoe strings to raise awareness about lymphoma. I saw Mt. St. Mary’s, whose coach is a cancer survivor, wear them on friday night and both Loyola MD and Penn St. wore them on Saturday.

I hate the cards red caps with the road greys…we look like philly or cincy. I love the navy caps so much id be for going to them full time, home and road. The cards would look 10 times greater (we already have the best unis im MLB) if we wore stirrups and black shoes.
