Did you know there was such a thing as organized competitive snowball fighting? Not only does this sport exist, but last weekend in Japan was the 20th annual edition of the Showa-Shinzan International Yukigassen, which roughly translates to snow (yuki), gather (ga), fight (sen).
That translation comes from, of course, our resident Japanese sports obsessive, Jeremy Brahm, who brought the snowball event to my attention. Here’s his report:
I didn’t realize there were uniforms for snowball fights, but this tournament requires that teams have matching uniforms or bibs. They had 155 teams participate this past weekend (128 men’s, 27 women’s). It takes seven people to play in a match, but nine are permitted on each team.
The small number on the right side of the bib is the team number; the large number is the player’s uniform number. Seven are to play in a match, but nine are permitted on each team. They even use roughly uniform snowballs!
Here are some posters from the 1996 and 2002 tournaments (that’s a phoenix clutching snowballs in its talons), and some uniform cartoons from 2003.
Amazing. And if you think snowball fighting is an odd sport, check out the pie-throwing pics and video here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Giants equipment director Joe Skiba will be doing a live chat next Friday, March 7th, at 2pm eastern. In order to participate, you have to be a register at Giants.com, which you can do here. … Speaking of the Giants, I’m a month late with this, but here’s a good article about the guy who does all the stitching on their uniforms (with thanks to Eric Stangel). … The Yankees-centric blog Sliding into Home is claiming that Yankee Stadium vendors wore this in the 1970s (note the Yanks logo on the left chest). Is that really possible? Doesn’t seem very, y’know, Yankee-like. … Unusual hosiery configuration being sported by the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors: Bosox-style stirrups with black sanitaries (with thanks to Travis McGuire, who also sent along a shot of the new Oregon State baseball unis). … According to the next-to-last graf on this page, the Nats will be selling “W”-shaped pretzels to match the team’s curly-W logo this season. … Good work by AJ Brandt, who writes: “I was watching trade deadline stuff on NHL Network, and they had a guy in the studio making up new jerseys for players as they were traded. As they were talking to Martin Lapointe via phone about his trade, they were running video of someone assembling his nameplate.” … Never noticed before that Joe Frazier wore peekaboo-vented trunks during his second fight with Ali. … Yesterday I linked to this photo, showing a Virginia Tech memorial strip on an FSU baseball cap. Now decal maven Chris Willis reports that the Seminoles have also ordered memorial strip decals to wear on their batting helmets. I know Chris provides a quality product, but couldn’t they just have used some black electrical tape? … In case you didn’t realize the Mets were now a wholly owned subsidiary of Citibank, they underscored the point the other day by wearing Citi Field caps, which is so utterly nauseating that I think Mr. Met just popped a few stitches on his head. … NIU’s sports program has returned to action, with what may be history’s lengthiest memorial ribbon. But at least it appears to be a genuine ribbon, not a graphic depiction of same — they get bonus points for that. … Mike Rich notes that Mark Teixeira’s been wearing red shoelaces. … More Iowa girls’ hoops tourney action from Jesse Gavin: “The one thing that really struck me today was Treynor’s shooting shirts. I don’t know how old they are, but they still have the ‘100th Anniversary of Basketball’ patch from 1991-92. Also, Davenport Assumption checked in with the tourney’s first racerback sighting.”

Nice early 20th Centry vibe on Oregon State’s new baseball unis with the black placket.
For once, let’s give Nike a bit of credit on doing some research on baseball history.
Also, those “Walgreen’s W” pretzels which I posted yesterday Paul look something like this. To which I asked “Logo creep or logo eat?” You decide.

As for the Yankee Stadium bleacher piece, I now have an excuse to talk to one of my ex girlfriends!
Both of her parents were teachers in the Bronx for some time. Somehow her father obtained a job as a beer vendor in the bleachers at the Stadium.
Many a game, he took care of my friends and I.
Luckily, we’re still friendly so I will start my research immediately!

The Yankee vendor shirt reminds me of the 70’s era NFL bedroom sets for kids (curtains, blanket, etc.) The motif was all the NFL wordmarks. If you look at that Yankee shirt, some of the fonts are current or past NFL fonts.

None of the unis on that were being assembled used official fonts or numbering, they were just straight black letters and numbers.

It would put a smile on many faces to see a little Terrible Towel adorning Steeler jerseys in 2008.

Don’t be so sure – the citizens of Brown County voted to persue naming rights back in 2000. It wasn’t binding, and it happened over the objections of the team, but it remains a possibility. Came pretty close to happening in 2003.
About the only bonus to the whole lousy economy is that naming rights aren’t the huge item that they once were. So the city won’t get as much money as they might once have, and therefore there probably won’t be a deal.

If you believe that anything in sports is sacred (Lambeau, Wrigley, etc.) you are (as we all are) sorely mistaken…In sports, as in business, if enough money is involved, changes will come.

Well, first off…
Only a little more than half of Chicago would go crazy. The South Side would point and laugh.
I don’t see any mobs with pitchforks still demanding the name Comiskey Park be returned to the Sox’ ballpark.
Partially because the Sox are the second team (even with the 2005 Series) in the city and enjoy less of a following, even though it’s sizeable.
No one will threaten to burn down anything. That’s an exaggeration. Cub fans would be very, very upset – no question. They’d be very vocal about it. They’d very likely boo any PA announcement that included the new name and it would become a tradition akin to throwing visiting home run balls back. Whatever company it was that bought the naming rights would likely be subject to scorn and derision, and would be associated with the boos that accompanied every mention of their name inside the ballpark.
A cottage industry would pop up with subversive t-shirts and other trinkets proclaiming “Wrigley Forever” (some of which, I have no doubt, would be planted or at least done in cahoots with the Cubs themselves – never let an opportunity to cash in get away, don’t you know) and suchlike.
But would Cub fans stop going to games? No. No, they wouldn’t. A century of futility broken up by occasional flurries of mediocrity and the lightning bolt of promise that turns into disappointment hasn’t done it.
Three million of them, easy, would still go to games. There might be an organized protest on opening day, but by May, they’d be fewer and fewer in number. There’d be some Alderman introducing a resolution or at least making noise about getting “Wrigley” back in there somewhere and it would be quite the cause celebre for a while.
I don’t know what the endgame would be, exactly. I’d imagine that after some period of time as “Motorola Park at Wrigley Field” or something, someone would come to their senses and be seen as a white knight because they got the company to opt out of the contract or something like that, because the company that buys the naming rights is unlikely to have an easy time of it at first.
If it’s a Chicago company (as US Cellular is), the effect would be mitigated somewhat, I guess (at least they couldn’t bitch about an evil out-of-town company ruining a landmark).
But anyone who thinks that the lack of naming rights revenue is what’s kept the Cubs from winning a World Series (or that that’s why the White Sox won in 2005) is an idiot. And so is anyone who thinks that any revenue from selling Wrigley Field’s name would get put back into the team and not into the pockets of whoever winds up owning it.

Wrigley, who made his personal fortune through chewing gum, bought the Cubs around 1918. The facility didn’t bear the Wrigley name until 1926. As it happens, his company bore the family name (as it does to this day), so to say you can make a distinction as to whether the family name or the corporate name is on the building is like arguing about whether Harry S Truman’s middle initial stood for Solomon or Shipp on Tuesday.
There’s no getting around the fact that the name has 82 years of history now, whether it was originally intended to honor his family or promote the business (it would have been really forward-thinking for them to have done it for the latter reason – I can’t think of anyone else who did it up until Augie Busch, and you can make the same case), whether you liked William Wrigley, Jr. or whether you thought he was a jerk, it’s the history and the fact that the ballpark itself transcends the team that makes it more likely the repercussions from such a move would be louder than they were for Comiskey or for most any other stadium you could name.
That said, most people who bitch about progress do so for a while and then move on. It’s rare that we keep things the way they are. Economic reality takes over at some point.

Like the Rattlers’ jersey design. But points off (several of them) for the Gerogia Tech number font. Now two teams in the AFL have them as their primary numbers and Dallas has them on their alternates.
When the Rush won the championship a few seasons ago, they had a great design. Then Russell came along and made them generic. And that’s too bad because I like Russell designs but they don’t seem to give much thought into designing the uniforms of the AFL, especially when it came to ditching good, original ideas for generic block fonts and stock fonts already used by other teams for many seasons. Nothing against good old varsity block, just that when a team had something unique and good, going back to block looks blah, especially when the other design elements remain mostly unchanged (The Soul, specifically).

That would be cool. They’ve gotten 82 years worth of advertising out of the deal already (the last 27 of it without even owning the team). They only sold the team for $20.5 million back then and it’s worth about a kabillion now, so I wonder how they feel about that.
That said, while it’s a great idea and has perfect symmetrical attributes that I adore, you couldn’t blame Wrigley if they said “Well, yeah, but it isn’t like this is a completely free market here. I mean, you know and I know that the people of Chicago want you and I to make this deal, but it’s more in your best interests than it is in mine, so you’re not in a position where you can demand a huge fee for this from me.”
The old saying is that to get full price for something, you have to have two bidders. If it’s Motorola and Wrigley, you gotta think under normal circumstances there’s going to have to be one hell of a discount for the Wrigley people, because they know that you know that you almost have to make that deal. It changes the dynamic.
But if it’s Zell, maybe that’s not the case. I really don’t think he gives a rat’s ass. He’ll take the highest bidder, and if that’s from Pink Taco, guess what? You’re playing in Pink Taco Park.

Definitely a practice. The Quakes and Dynamo wore practice jerseys earlier this month in San Francisco and San Jose. It seems the Quakes are playing in their real jerseys now, though. I guess DCU hasn’t got theirs yet.

I’d post a certain picture that LI Phil gave me, but then again, it’d be overkill or our part.
Mike Coolbaugh was killed last year in a game when a foul ball hit him at or near the head IIRC, hence MLB has decided to make coaches wear helmets, a move started by Rockies’ 1B coach Glenallen “I Found My Thrill On Blueberry” Hill as Mr. Berman called him eons ago.
By the way, the yellow “C” in “UCLA” stands for 100 NCAA Championships, that green dot is to let the referee know that the quarterback has radio communications, neither Dallas Clark and LT has an American Flag decal on their helmets, and for crying out loud, don’t get me started on anything else today!

“Yea, I hate it when
strippersice skaters wear those things.”“Strikethru didn’t work for ’strippers’.”
Hmmm, that’s funny, the “s” should be “strike” there. Works for me.

Well considering that it would be tough to catch with a helmet with the double ear flaps like they wear in college is clue enough I would think.

the wave. i fucking hate the wave. it obstructs my view of the game when there are hundreds of people in front of me constantly standing up.
the kids. everything now seems to be done for the kids. ESPECIALLY down on the farm. i was at aa reading last season, and i think they had like 4 different mascots! 4! the games they play in between innings, the roving guy with the mic interviewing people in the stands. its friggin ridiculous.
now, im not one to say, exclude the kids from pro baseball, but their little league games are set up more to my liking than an mlb game is. no wave, no promotions, just baseball. its like now, when you go to see an mlb game, you have to go to the carnival to do so.

the winged helmet is a football thing, right?
ok, its been adopted by a few of the other sports, but at the end of the day, that is a football thing.
baseball never used the winged pattern in the past so its never been part of baseball tradition in ann arbor. id assume that the only reason that the winged pattern spread to other sports (i guess first in hockey) is because a player thought, “hey it looks cool in football, i’m gonna paint my helmet like that.”
christ, its even made its way to the hardwood last year when brent petway cut his like it for senior day.

As for Wrigley, I have given up on anything resembling sanity or good taste when it comes to stadiums. It’s a lost cause.

I think the whole point is that Wrigley Field is one of those timless iconic parks. Would they rename Fenway? Not a chance. The new Yankee Stadium will be….Yankee Stadium. Dodgers Stadium, always Dodger Stadium. No one cares what
Petco Park is called. It woulda been great to have AT&T-SBC-PacBell Park called “Willie Mays Park,” but it co$t too much, and AT&T waved the dough. No way will they rename Wrigley. Justdon’t see it.
Tho “Uniwatch Field” works.

This story (first paragraph) from sfgate.com reports that Jim Harbaugh is removing the black stripe from Stanford’s football uniforms. There is a lot of black trim, so I don’t know if it’s just the pants or the helmet stripe or what.

Thank you for the article about babes and hockey jerseys. Many moons ago, I visited a gentleman’s club while wearing an vintage Atlanta Flames jersey. One of the lovely ladies, from the Atlanta area, demanded to wear the jersey to open her mext performance. Gentleman that I am, I obliged. I still smile at the memory…
