Did you know there was such a thing as organized competitive snowball fighting? Not only does this sport exist, but last weekend in Japan was the 20th annual edition of the Showa-Shinzan International Yukigassen, which roughly translates to snow (yuki), gather (ga), fight (sen).
That translation comes from, of course, our resident Japanese sports obsessive, Jeremy Brahm, who brought the snowball event to my attention. Here’s his report:
I didn’t realize there were uniforms for snowball fights, but this tournament requires that teams have matching uniforms or bibs. They had 155 teams participate this past weekend (128 men’s, 27 women’s). It takes seven people to play in a match, but nine are permitted on each team.
The small number on the right side of the bib is the team number; the large number is the player’s uniform number. Seven are to play in a match, but nine are permitted on each team. They even use roughly uniform snowballs!
Here are some posters from the 1996 and 2002 tournaments (that’s a phoenix clutching snowballs in its talons), and some uniform cartoons from 2003.

I know Chris provides a quality product, but couldn’t they just have used some black electrical tape? … In case you didn’t realize the Mets were now a wholly owned subsidiary of Citibank, they underscored the point the other day by wearing Citi Field caps, which is so utterly nauseating that I think Mr. Met just popped a few stitches on his head. … NIU’s sports program has returned to action, with what may be history’s lengthiest memorial ribbon. But at least it appears to be a genuine ribbon, not a graphic depiction of same — they get bonus points for that. … Mike Rich notes that Mark Teixeira’s been wearing red shoelaces. … More Iowa girls’ hoops tourney action from Jesse Gavin: “The one thing that really struck me today was Treynor’s shooting shirts. As for the Yankee Stadium bleacher piece, I now have an excuse to talk to one of my ex girlfriends!
Both of her parents were teachers in the Bronx for some time. Somehow her father obtained a job as a beer vendor in the bleachers at the Stadium.
Many a game, he took care of my friends and I.
Luckily, we’re still friendly so I will start my research immediately!

The Yankee vendor shirt reminds me of the 70’s era NFL bedroom sets for kids (curtains, blanket, etc.) The motif was all the NFL wordmarks. If you look at that Yankee shirt, some of the fonts are current or past NFL fonts.

None of the unis on that were being assembled used official fonts or numbering, they were just straight black letters and numbers.

I am just glad that in my lifetime, there is no way in hell that Lambeau Field will be changing its name since it is co-owned by fans, and the city of Green Bay and state of Wisonsin would go into a State of Emergency if the name would change.
If you believe that anything in sports is sacred (Lambeau, Wrigley, etc.) you are (as we all are) sorely mistaken…In sports, as in business, if enough money is involved, changes will come.

Partially because the Sox are the second team (even with the 2005 Series) in the city and enjoy less of a following, even though it’s sizeable.
No one will threaten to burn down anything. That’s an exaggeration. Cub fans would be very, very upset – no question. They’d be very vocal about it. They’d very likely boo any PA announcement that included the new name and it would become a tradition akin to throwing visiting home run balls back. Whatever company it was that bought the naming rights would likely be subject to scorn and derision, and would be associated with the boos that accompanied every mention of their name inside the ballpark.
A cottage industry would pop up with subversive t-shirts and other trinkets proclaiming “Wrigley Forever” (some of which, I have no doubt, would be planted or at least done in cahoots with the Cubs themselves – never let an opportunity to cash in get away, don’t you know) and suchlike.
But would Cub fans stop going to games? No. No, they wouldn’t. A century of futility broken up by occasional flurries of mediocrity and the lightning bolt of promise that turns into disappointment hasn’t done it.
Three million of them, easy, would still go to games. There might be an organized protest on opening day, but by May, they’d be fewer and fewer in number. There’d be some Alderman introducing a resolution or at least making noise about getting “Wrigley” back in there somewhere and it would be quite the cause celebre for a while.
I don’t know what the endgame would be, exactly. I’d imagine that after some period of time as “Motorola Park at Wrigley Field” or something, someone would come to their senses and be seen as a white knight because they got the company to opt out of the contract or something like that, because the company that buys the naming rights is unlikely to have an easy time of it at first.
If it’s a Chicago company (as US Cellular is), the effect would be mitigated somewhat, I guess (at least they couldn’t bitch about an evil out-of-town company ruining a landmark).
But anyone who thinks that the lack of naming rights revenue is what’s kept the Cubs from winning a World Series (or that that’s why the White Sox won in 2005) is an idiot. And so is anyone who thinks that any revenue from selling Wrigley Field’s name would get put back into the team and not into the pockets of whoever winds up owning it.

Like the Rattlers’ jersey design. But points off (several of them) for the Gerogia Tech number font. Now two teams in the AFL have them as their primary numbers and Dallas has them on their alternates.
When the Rush won the championship a few seasons ago, they had a great design. Then Russell came along and made them generic. And that’s too bad because I like Russell designs but they don’t seem to give much thought into designing the uniforms of the AFL, especially when it came to ditching good, original ideas for generic block fonts and stock fonts already used by other teams for many seasons. Nothing against good old varsity block, just that when a team had something unique and good, going back to block looks blah, especially when the other design elements remain mostly unchanged (The Soul, specifically).

As for “beloved players,” there are a few in Cubdom that would spring to mind: Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg (all of whom have had their numbers retired, but Ryno is too young for that honor) and Fergie Jenkins (who has not had his number retired).
But as I said, I don’t see that happening.

My only issue with renaming Wrigley is the slippry slope. First it’s the name, then there’s a Jumbotron, then between inning hot dog races, fireworks, and kiddie activities. If I wanted to go to an amusement park, I’d go to an amusement park. I’m there to watch the damn baseball game.

now, im not one to say, exclude the kids from pro baseball, but their little league games are set up more to my liking than an mlb game is. no wave, no promotions, just baseball. its like now, when you go to see an mlb game, you have to go to the carnival to do so.

ok, its been adopted by a few of the other sports, but at the end of the day, that is a football thing.
baseball never used the winged pattern in the past so its never been part of baseball tradition in ann arbor. id assume that the only reason that the winged pattern spread to other sports (i guess first in hockey) is because a player thought, “hey it looks cool in football, i’m gonna paint my helmet like that.”
christ, its even made its way to the hardwood last year when brent petway cut his like it for senior day.

This story (first paragraph) from sfgate.com reports that Jim Harbaugh is removing the black stripe from Stanford’s football uniforms. There is a lot of black trim, so I don’t know if it’s just the pants or the helmet stripe or what.
