WFL: WTF?!

pants.jpg

For years there’s been a juicy uni mystery that I’ve neglected to pursue. To wit: What was the deal with the WFL’s position-based pants back in the 1970s?

In case this is new to you: The WFL briefly experimented with the having distinct pants designs for each major position category (linemen, receivers, etc.). Yes, that’s a really stupid-ass idea, but so was the entire WFL itself, so whaddaya gonna do. Anyway: Whenever this topic comes up, someone always links to the photo shown at right, which until recently was the only image of the pants that I’d seen. But then Kenn Tomasch dug up a DVD with some old WFL footage and made some screen grabs. Here’s his analysis:

I think it went like this: quarterbacks, white pants with stars; running backs, green; offensive linemen, purple; defensive linemen, blue; linebackers, red; tight ends and receivers, orange; defensive backs, yellow. I’m not sure what the kickers wore.

I don’t even know what game this video is from. It might have been a scrimmage of some sort, because the two teams (Southern California for sure, and maybe that’s Philadelphia?) didn’t go all out. Looked like they were just going through the motions. But it was televised somewhere and I have no idea where or why.

As a bonus, here’s a shot where you can see the awful outfit worn by TVS announcer Alex Hawkins.

Yowza — looks like ol’ Alex wanted to get in on the crazy pants action, no?

Anyone know what game this might have been? And does anyone know more about the WFL’s ill-advised attempt at trouser innovation? Was this idea part of the league’s first season or the second season? How long did they try it for, and why did they abandon it? If anyone knows more about the bizarre chapter in pro football history, please clue us in.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I spent the last three days road-tripping through New Jersey and Pennsylvania and haven’t yet caught up on everything, so forgive me if any of the stuff in today’s Ticker has already been discussed. … One of my stops along the way, incidentally, was the classic roadside stop Hot Dog Johnny’s (whose featured beverages are birch beer and buttermilk, don’tcha know), where I was surprised to see an old photo of the company hoops team in a display case. … Good news out of Pittsburgh, where the Pirates’ red vest’s days appear to be numbered. Details toward the bottom of this page. … Morris Levin reports that the Dodgers held an unusual white-on-white intrasquad game the other day. … The impending return of the Oregon baseball program after a nearly three-decade hiatus prompted Scott Little to send along pics of an old Oregon helmet that he has in his collection (additional pics here, here, here, and here). … Nice to see that the Mets have patterned their new stadium logo after the world’s worst pizza. … An assortment of White Sox uni promotions are listed here. … Texas A&M’s baseball team has replaced this with this (lots of additional pics here). Not even stirrups can save that jersey design. … Speaking of stirrups, check out the beauties being worn by Oklahoma State and New Mexico State (here’s another view; thanks to Brian Ray and Sam Wasson, respectively). … And according to the third item on this page, an increasing number of Pirates players are wearing and showing their stirrups (with thanks to Tom Cotter). … Still more stirrup action (reprinted from Sunday’s comments): the Great One. … U. of Hawaii has inked a big deal with Under Armour (with thanks to Joshua Huff). … Nicole Haase’s recent tale about being on the field during Super Bowl prompted Susan Freeman to recall her own experience in the Super Bowl XXXVIII pregame show. Full details here. … What does a lion’s penis have to do with uniforms? Look here (courtesy of J.R. Tracy). … Virginia Tech acknowledging the shootings at Northern Illinois by wearing an NIU logo jersey patch, as you can see in the 13th photo of this gallery. … Weird to see UGA wearing white batting helmets (as spotted by Paul Radetsky) … “South Carolina has added a new baseball jersey,” writes Chris Rodgers. “This is in addition to at least three other tops and probably five to eight total combinations.” … USF’s new football jerseys will look like this and this. … Good article here about MLB coaches wearing helmets (with thanks to Morris Levin). … Jared Wheeler, who does uni research for Mitchell & Ness, recently sent along pics of two great historical pieces he came upon. The first one is an Indianapolis Olympians short-sleeve basketball jersey (”worn by Rex Groza — Lou’s brother,” says Jared), and the other is an Episcopal Academy football jersey (additional views here, here, and here). … Underbrim update, Japanese style (with thanks to, of course, Jeremy Brahm, who says the message translates to “All-out play”). … I’m not a big college hoops fan, which gives me enough emotional breathing room to find this rather amusing. Stupid, mind you, but still amusing. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Here’s something you don’t see very often — Manny Ramirez’s helmet all shiny and clean. … “There’s usually not that much to report on the uni front from the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament, but there were some odd sights during Monday’s first set of quarterfinal games,” writes Jesse Gavin. “Some very weird shorts striping for Southeast Webster Grand; a very odd protective facemask on Paige Heesch from Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka; an odd piping pattern for Lawton-Bronson; and it looks like Springville decided to wear Oregon State’s football jerseys upside-down for their shorts.” … Looks like the ACC’s use of black Virginia Tech memorial strips is now extending to baseball caps (excellent catch by Walker Hicken)

Really, Paul? You have to ask?!?!?

That Basketball Player’s mask looks like the ones made for pitchers in softball so they don’t get blasted in the face. much nicer than taking a liner off the jaw, trust me, it’s happend to me.

The other WFL team is the Philadelphia Bell. You can see the “U of P” painted on the old turf at Franklin Field. Not sure if it was an exhibition game or not, I don’t remember any other teams wearing them.

That is the Philadelphia Bell in the WFL pics, and I believe that this was filmed at Franklin Field (U of P painted at mid-field). I know that the Bell played at JFK Stadium in their first year (since I went to a game in ‘74), and King Corcoran was the QB in year 1, so I’d make the assumption that this “game” was from 1975.

Look at the helmets on the Bell linemen - no logos on the LT & LG helmets. Also, on the Sun’s (?) defensive players, the helmet stripes are not consistent. I’d assume further that this event was for media purposes only.

Which player in the Hot Dog Johnny’s team photo was the MVP?

Is it possible that the different uniform pants were partially for the officials to be able to tell who was an eligible receiver?

Also, based on those screen grabs from 1975, we really have become a fat country (myself included).

I think that Southeast Webster-Grand design is similar to AS Monaco FC with the shirt having a diagonal division.

Monaco Shirt

The difference is that the diagonal starts under the right armpit and goes downward over to the middle of the the left leg. Yes it is weird, but they also use it for their home uniforms.

It’s called a game face.

K-State wore Nike SOD unis last night against Texas. They had unusual striped pattern down the back . And, although I’m not a big fan of the baggy shorts of Nike’s SOD, I do feel that those unis look better than the Tony the Tiger stripes they had been wearing.

Black Oregon jerseys…puke

I like the font on the USF jerseys. What will Hawaii’s new unis look like, I wonder. I like what Under Armour has done so far.

I saw a BC baseball game on TV the other day…and the black memorial strip was on the sleeve. Seems like the location of the black strip is up to the individual school…such as it was for hoops and football.

I was so happy with the redesign of the A&M football and hoops unis (I’m a Texas Aggie, class of ‘93). Those tragic baseball jerseys, though…why?!?

Aren’t we all filled with sort of a nervous anticipation, almost a dread, waiting to see what kind of horrific uniform combinations the University Oregon baseball team will be wearing?

I mean, they’ll have to be more over the top than “The U”, am I right?

the shawn kemp of footy?

Not even wear stirrups can save that jersey design.

I believe there’s an ‘ing’ missing here.

WFL = 1882 National League, only slightly less goofy-looking but ten times as stupid for not being able to learn from the sins of the past.

Good news out of Pittsburgh, where the Pirates’ red vest’s days appear to be numbered. Details toward the bottom of this page.

The deadline for new MLB unis is in June. In order to make a change, we have to submit designs in June to be approved during the season and (hopefully) revealed during the winter.

I’ve also heard that there’s a two-season minimum on regular uniforms. I’m guessing this is because most front office changes occur during the off-season long after the June deadline, but that also keeps you from having to pitch thousands of unsold jerseys because of a sudden change.

Happy NHL Trade Deadline Day!!

Jay Onrait’s Deadline blog on tsn.ca has minor uni content. Check out the post at 2:12am. Knowing the Leafs, they likely have a no-trade clause there, too.

Here

I think it went like this: quarterbacks, white pants with stars; running backs, green; offensive linemen, purple; defensive linemen, blue; linebackers, red; tight ends and receivers, orange; defensive backs, yellow. I’m not sure what the kickers wore.

I’ve got $10 on Oregon trying to out-do this monstrosity. Given the Duck’s “lead” in bball unis, I expect nothing less (and, indeed, even more garish stupidity) on the gridiron.

I saw someone else commented on the new K-State unis last night, which I liked a little better than before as well. However, K-State’s unis weren’t the ones that caught my eyes the most. Did anyone else notice that Texas players were wearing 2 different colors of burnt orange? I’m looking for picture evidence at the moment, but it was very obvious at times that JJ Abrams was wearing a different color than were other players. I’ll keep poking around for pics.

I don’t have any pictures of it, but on today’s Today Show, Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson were on along with Nate Robinson for a game of two on two with Merideth Viera. The Today Show printed up “Today” jerseys for Nate and Merideth, but Merideth seemed unfamiliar with how jerseys are worn these days, as she was wearing her backwards. I don’t know if anyone else saw it, but if anyone has pictures, I think this could be a classic.

Where is Hot Dog Johnny’s???

That Oregon helmet is gorgeous.

Hopefully, they’ll adopt the Autzen/Hayward logo and stick with a nice classic cap. Beautiful, classic.

But then again, this is Nike we’re talking about. So they’ll probably go with something… else.

Position-based pants? A technicolor nightmare in the lo-def ’70s.

The Citi Field logo isn’t great, but just because it’s rotated at a 45-degree angle doesn’t mean that inspires a comparison the Domino’s: ketchup on cardboard.

Funny that the old Nike jerseys are the model of traditionalism and good taste (with a touch of the swoosh thrown in), while Adidas has taken pains to uglify the Aggies. Today’s score: Nike 1 Adidas 0.

The point of the article was that the management group wants to be more traditional, and hence, doesn’t like the red jersey. I think we’ll see it less this year, if at all, followed by a change next year. Last year they wore it every Friday home game.

They still have teh black jersey with sleaves available to them as well, and I don’t think they wore that at all last year. Prehaps we will see that again this year rather than the red vest?

Speaking of pants…

I’m looking to buy Atlanta Braves-patterned baseball pants — you know, white with navy and red piping down the sides and around the belt loops. I found a pair on eBay, but I don’t do the whole pro-cut look. I’d prefer to find a uniform outfitter who either has the style available or could customize a pair of pro weight pants. Any leads?

Oh, I knew it was a 1975 WFL thing. I believe it was one of Chris Hemmeter’s bright ideas.

The original photo above shows two Memphis Grizzlies, if I’m not mistaken. #8 may be third-string quarterback Lonnie Stewart (John Huarte and Danny White were the Grizzlies’ other QBs in 1975). The other guy is a running back, obviously (hey, maybe the pants had something there), and could be Willie Spencer, maybe? Spencer was actually their leading rusher in 1975, ahead of Kiick and Csonka.

When the erstwhile Dolphins posed for this SI cover in July of 1975 (which I’ve just noticed is an homage to this cover from three years prior, just adding Warfield - and note how Zonk has added an additional digit to the infamous one-finger salute from the 1972 cover), they had the traditional white pants on.

I do not believe the WFL multi-colored pants experiment made it out of the preseason.

On Sunday, July 19, 1975, the Southern California Sun and Philadelphia Bell did play an exhibition game (the Sun won, 23-8), so it’s entirely possible that this is the game the video is from (and if I had video capture capability on this computer, I’d make you one). The regular season started a week later, and, from what I understand, so many players just refused to wear the pants that the experiment was shelved.

I don’t know who it was, maybe Calvin Hill (?), but an NFL veteran playing out the string in the WFL supposedly said that he had spent too long in professional football and done too much to go out looking like a circus clown.

I live 10 minutes from Hot Dog Johnnys. Best food in the state.

Even though I still like the color of the Oregon unis (duh), I seem to be one of the only. SI had a quick hit item about it (under Some Serious Ugly Ducklings). I agree that Kentucky’s 1996 denim unis are worse.

They appear to be, don’t they?

I have that issue, which I think has other photos in it, but it’s in storage.

But here are two other shots, one of the trio and a closer shot of Zonk’s chest, which show his numbers as normal-sized. Looks like the cover shot was taken at a different time from these (that’s the Liberty Bowl in the background on these, innit?).

Those Villanova throwbacks are seriously sharp. It’s nice to see something so clean, simple and bold in an era of college basketball clown suits and SOD nightmares.

All this time that UH has been a Nike team, I’ve felt like they should be UA. Mainly because that ‘H’ that they wear on the neckline panel, looks like the UA logo when seen on TV.

‘Nova could do without that stupid Big East logo on the collar. NOB is fine but that thing just ruins the whole timelessly-sharp look.

Need a little help here. A while back, when we were all going back and forth about the new NHL jerseys as they were being unveiled…there were some readers here who ran a hockey supply/jersey retail outfit.

My son (3 years old today) is starting with the pre-hockey program this weekend. I’ve got him everything he needs, except no one has jerseys small enough around my area (Youth-XS). So I wanted to check with the guys from here.

Thanks

Speaking of college basketball…

They have probably been wearing these for a while ( I don’t follow NCAABB too closely until the tournament), but props to Arkansas for going back to basics with these beauties. I saw the road version against Kentucky while flipping channels Saturday and thought they looked great.

Definitely different jersey in those other pics of Czonk. There are no sleve numbers on the cover jersey.

Dan,

My 5-year old just finished his learn to skate/play program and wore a jersey about 3 sizes too big ’cause that’s all the league issues. My suggestion: get the smallest size you can find and tuck it in so he doesn’t trip and use hockey tape to wrap the sleeves at his wrists. My guy thought it was the coolest thing to get “taped up” before practice!

Better Arkansas link.

Definitely different jersey in those other pics of Czonk. There are no sleve numbers on the cover jersey.

Good catch.

Meanwhile, Warfield and Kiick have what appear to be their “official” jerseys on. I wonder what the story is with that? Did they not have an official one for Zonk yet or what?

I agree. Personally, I think many of the SOD unis would look GREAT if the pants were so darn baggy. To me, that ruins them. Otherwise, I think many of the designs look rather sharp.

As for K-State, I like the stripes down the back. They mimic the stripes on the football pant legs, which was also added to their football sleeves this year as you can see HERE on #1’s sleeve and HERE on #74 on the right as well as #1. It’s kind of hard to see…but it’s there.

Has anyone noticed the Shea Stadium patch looks a whole lot like the Tiger Stadium patch from 1999? I know this is coming from a biased Tigers fan, but I think it is completely unfair for the Mets organization to copy this logo, seeing as Tiger Stadium has so much more history in it than Shea Stadium. Sure, Shea has hosted many big games and important events, but it was built in the 1960’s, and at that point, baseball had been played at The Corner for 50 years. And, aesthetically speaking, Shea Stadium is nothing compared to Tiger Stadium.

This is sort of off the uni-patch subject, but since Tiger Stadium is on the Nationl Register of Historical Places, why is it going to be torn down? I thought the NRHP was intended to prevent just those sort of things happening.

i doubt the mets were copying the tiger patch (although…i smell a lawsuit somewhere)…but yes, there is a resemblance…i also doubt anyone would ever confuse the magnificent and wonderful tiger stadium with the cookiecutter by la guardia

we can’t get 2008 over with fast enough, i say, although i hope shea is hosting meaningful games into late october

Thanks
Dan

Try River City Sports, out of Toronto.

I meant Winnipeg!

I have a problem and hopefully someone can help me solve it. I am playing in an invitational softball tournament next month and wondered if anyone knew of anywhere to get stirrups? Preferably like the amazing ones shown on the Oregon State or New Mexico State players!

Your help is much appreciated!

“Was your point to prove that you didn’t coin the phrase ‘Shitty Field’?”

You wanted the proof in the pudding in yesterday’s thread, didn’t you? ‘Twas not I who started the “Shitty Field” comments. Three comments on that Gothamist.com groundbreaking item pointed out that name, likely by those Mets fans angered by overpriced tickets, parking, and concessions who stated the name and the facts that the Mets “sold out” to citicorp for a smaller capacity ballpark, further raising their ire. Yankees fan Keith Olbermann picked it up that night for his “Worst Person in the World” segment on MSNBC’s “Countdown” (a link provided to you in message #44; scroll down to that segement following the shameless book plug.)

Man…I don’t know. Tuck in, and he’ll look like Jagr. Or the Sasoon Rangers! lol.

Thanks for the tip. I have a small, but it’s so big on him…so I was still looking for XS.

Speaking of college basketball…

They have probably been wearing these for a while ( I don’t follow NCAABB too closely until the tournament), but props to Arkansas for going back to basics with these beauties. I saw the road version against Kentucky while flipping channels Saturday and thought they looked great.

On a similar note, Herb Sendak, the current coach at Arizona State, seems to be a fan of the minimalist style. When he was coach at NC State, his teams wore very basic Adidas designed unis.

Since arriving in Tempe, the Sun Devils have gone from this to this uninspired gear.

I’m all for the “Penn State” traditional style however, if the threads lack pizazz, or are done with the sentiment of Michigan State’s football unis a few years ago, that it’s work wear, I have no love for them.

K-State wore Nike SOD unis last night against Texas. They had unusual striped pattern down the back . And, although I’m not a big fan of the baggy shorts of Nike’s SOD, I do feel that those unis look better than the Tony the Tiger stripes they had been wearing.

I agree. Personally, I think many of the SOD unis would look GREAT if the pants weren’t so darn baggy. To me, that ruins them. Otherwise, I think many of the designs look rather sharp.

I completely agree.

By the way, I think they got the name wrong!

Similar, maybe.

But I don’t think it’s so close as to warrant either “copy” or “unfair.”

is it possible that maybe those comments were made by yankmee fans james?

i still have yet to hear one REAL met fan begrudge the beautiful park that, btw, is NOT TAXPAYER FUNDED, unlike some parks in the great state of pennsylvania

if there are any complaints, which of course there will be, it’s that shea is/was bigger…once fans expernence the citi, they will not be complaining about the approximately 10,000 less seats…as far as “overpriced tickets and concessions”… have you been to a hockey/baskeball/football game recently? baseball is a bargain in comparison (maybe not on the food and drink, but the only REAL ballpark food is hotdogs & peanuts anyway…not this sushi and new-age shit they sell everywhere now–who the fck eats sushi at a ball game????)

you have a beautiful park in CBB james…enjoy it and don’t ruin the citi because of whatever misguided grudge you may have against the new york metropolitan baseball club or mets fans

James, Phil: You’ve both done a fine job of demonstrating your inability to let someone else have the last word, among other dubious skills. No more, please. Let’s move on.

We have pictures of the position pants in the WFL, and we have pictures of various team jerseys. There are places online (one example) where we can see depictions of team helmets. However, there’s one WFL-specific item I have yet to see in pictorial form: the Dickerrod!

Not the greatest photo, but there’s one on the right side of this pic from the same gallery that produced the lead photo for today.

Sorry for the snafu, try this link

Aah, but if you only tuck ONE side, he’ll look like The Great One!!

how the NL east is won…two bullets

also, johan’s jersey gives a good view of the FYOS patch

despite the unnecessary black drop-shadow, my favorite met uni…crisp, clean…perfect

Is there less black in that drop shadow these days, or do my eyes deceive me?

As for K-State, I like the stripes down the back. They mimic the stripes on the football pant legs, which was also added to their football sleeves this year as you can see HERE on #1’s sleeve and HERE on #74 on the right as well as #1. It’s kind of hard to see…but it’s there.

I don’t mind the tiger stripes at all, I quite like that sort of design. But for me, the shoulder design kills it.

i don’t THINK it’s any less, but it’s certainly the best of all their many uni choices and combos

if they would just go back to the “Mets” el duque is wearing in the throwback, on top of the uni johan and pedro are sporting…all would be just great

don’t get me completely wrong, i still like the pinstripe
