Saturday Morning Non-Uni Watch

Basketball

Maybe I expect too much. Maybe I don’t get it. (Though I do Get It™.) Maybe it’s harder than it looks. I don’t know.

But why, why, did the new Bulls, obtained at the trade deadline on Thursday, not suit up? Shaq sat around for a few days a couple of weeks ago, and it seems like it happens most often in the NBA. If a trade of this significance is made, wouldn’t you think the teams involved would like to get the new guys on the court as soon as possible? “Hey, we’re addressing our needs with this trade … but our needs can wait a few nights.”

In 2004, when Nomar Garciaparra was traded to the Cubs at the deadline (a Saturday afternoon), he was in the lineup the next afternoon for a 1:20 start at Wrigley Field … where he promptly grounded into a double play in his first at-bat. I know baseball players do it all the time. Traded on Tuesday, in the lineup for a different team on Wednesday.

So what’s the deal? Don’t tell me it’s the “plays.” Come on — there are no plays being run in the NBA. Besides, baseball players have to learn new signs, and you don’t see them sitting for a few days to get it figured out. Are they waiting for their posses to get into town? Out of team-colored arm sleeves?

Anbody have any theories? Let ’er rip. — Bryan

Good topic today Bryan.
And a good question. One that I’ve often wondered myself.

When a trade involving so many players are executed, it cannot be officially finalized until ALL players involved clear their physicals. So in an 11-player swap like this, all 11 need to clear, and as I hear it, the players received in Seattle had not cleared by tip-off of the 8:00 EST games in Chicago and Cleveland.

It kinda sucks, but the league cannot allow these players to play for a team before the trade is made “official”. Imagine the hysteria (sarcasm) if these guys had played a game for the Bulls and the trade was nixed because Adrian Griffin (to Seattle) couldn’t pass a physical. Then all players would have to go back to their original teams.

The players could not play due to the fact that every player involved in the three team trade needs to pass a physical before any of them can suit up. Per ESPN radio in Chicago.

During the Suns-Lakers game the other night they talked about how both Jordan Farmar and Coby Karl of the Lakers had played in both a D-League game and an NBA game in the same day this season.

The passing of the physical thing makes sense, I guess, but it seems like you could fast-track that, too.

Drew Gooden must be a big fan of Dr. Harry Edwards.

Maybe their uniforms weren’t made yet?

I have bit of a clue for the “zig-zag lines” on those old ballparks (FEB 20). I was just watching the first disc of Ken Burns’ “Baseball” when I saw a field with those lines on it. Along the line that is parallel to the baseline but back a few yards, there was a bench! I guess, it was the first dugout. I apologize for the really bad screen grab (iPhone of CRT TV of 1880s photgraph), but I think it gets the point across. Maybe someone else could find a better picture?

Whoops, I forgot the link.

Joel Youngblood laughs in their general direction.

Apparently the photo is of the Congress Street Grounds, an old Beaneaters park.

I’ve had the Ken Burns’ “Baseball” DVD set since X-Mas 2006, but have only made it through Inning 4. My wife and 2 daughters complain every time I try to watch it. That and the “When It Was a Game” series are must haves for any baseball uni-geek.

I think playing the same day has happened before in the NBA.

When Clyde Drexler was traded to the Rockets in the spring of 1995 (I don’t remember who for off the top of my head) it happened that afternoon and that night Clyde suited up at halftime and played the second half.

So it’s happened before.

When It Was A Game, maybe, but Ken Burns’ Baseball is only a must-have if you’re a fan of New York Baseball.

The blatant bias makes it unwatchable if you actually care about the history of baseball in the other 49 states, which is sad. A documentary that long should have been covering every topic imaginable.

Just looked it up. Drexler was traded with Tracy Murray for Otis Thorpe and 2 draft picks.

Almost positive he played the same day (but not until after halftime)

My biggest question is why Drew Gooden insists on trying to become a recruiting poster for Al Quaida. Provide a razor..or three…with his new uniform.

I agree somewhat, plus Burns’ gets up on his soapbox about social issues. The first few episodes, though, have some great shots of local teams, factory teams, etc. Pretty cool uniforms represented.

teams can waive their right to have a player pass a physical, which is almost certainly what happened in the Drexler situation.

But for Seattle, who wants to flip anyone they’ve got into draft picks, they can’t take damaged goods.

The reason Drew Gooden has the bushy beard is because he made a bet with the WIzard’s DeShawn Stevenson before the season started to see who could grow their’s the longest. This is similar to last season when Damon Jones (I think) bet him he wouldn’t grow that patch on the back of his head for the whole season.

I might be wrong, but doesn’t the history of baseball as we know it come right out of New York? Like the Knickerbockers and their documented rules of baseball that are fairly similar to modern rules. I understand that there was baseball being played in different forms (stickball and such) around the country (civil war camps), but I think the focus on New York is pretty apt. Unless of course you’re talking about throughout the entire documentary as opposed to just the first few “Innings.”

Going from the D-Fenders to the Lakers is a lot different from going from the Bulls to the Sonics. The main thing is that Jordan Farmar and Coby Karl are actually Lakers players that were assigned to the D-Fenders, the same as a baseball player on the 40-man roster playing AAA. That means the only thing they have to do to play for the parent club is arrive in the building on time. Since the home venue for the D-Fenders is the same as the home of the Lakers, and all D-Fenders home games are played either before or after Lakers games, it’s pretty darn easy for a player being called up to play for the D-Fenders in the early game, then walk down the hallway to the big club’s locker room and suit up for the nightcap.

As many people have already stated, it is exactly as they have said. It was said on ESPN many times, they were waiting for all the players to clear physicals. In fact, Cleveland had to call up 2 d-league players just so they’d have more than 6 players suited up.

Players must pass their physicals as per the NBA and the NBPA collective bargaining agreement.

The NBA’s representatives (the commissioner, the deputy commissioner, various owners, the NBA’s attorneys and financial experts) attempt to get the best deal possible for the owners.

On the other side, the NBPA’s executive director, player representatives, including the Executive Committee, a negotiating committee (comprised of NBA players representing all levels of income and seniority within the league), and the NBPA’s staff represent the players.

Additionally, players involved in a trade can request a short transition period (to get family members and business issues resolved) and this commonly happens in the NBA.

Why? Basically because they can…

I might be wrong, but doesn’t the history of baseball as we know it come right out of New York? Like the Knickerbockers and their documented rules of baseball that are fairly similar to modern rules. New York taking credit for another New Jersey invention, tis, tisk, tisk… Anyway, more theories on where baseball’s rules were written than the Kennedy Assassination however the current theory is baseball’s rules were developed in New Jersey.

Also, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it mentioned here or not, but TCU’s baseball team has the waving Texas state flag on their sleeve, a la the Rangers. Which is interesting because neither red nor blue is one of their team colors. It looks a little funny, but hey, it doesn’t seem to take much suggestion for a Texas to exhibit some state pride.

The Holy Grail of NBA Uniform Policy.

Section 3. Uniform.
(a) During any NBA game or practice, including warm-up periods and going to and from the locker room to the playing floor, a player shall wear only the Uniform as supplied by his Team. For purposes of the preceding sentence only, “Uniform” means all clothing and other items (such as kneepads, wristbands and headbands, but not including Sneakers) worn by a player during an NBA game or practice. “Sneakers” means athletic shoes of the type worn by players while playing an NBA game.

(b) Other than as may be incorporated into his Uniform and the manufacturer’s identification incorporated into his Sneakers, a player may not, during any NBA game, display any commercial, promotional, or charitable name, mark, logo or other identification, including but not limited to on his body, on his hair, or otherwise.

I’ve found many references to this event in articles about the game — & I know I’ve seen either pictures or footage before — but haven’t located a photo yet. The Oregon uniforms are bad, but at least they’re not offensively bad like the football uniforms. I wouldn’t call them “bedazzled with glitter”… the “OREGON” on the front, NOB, and Oregon logo on the shorts are just a reflective black material. The rest of the uni is black with the exception of the yellow numbers.

At the very least, they didn’t use the diamond-plating or some goofy asymmetrical pattern.

(But I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet who could say they look better than UCLA’s classic look)

“Blue jerseys? Braves haven’t announced it yet, and I don’t even know that it’s been approved by MLB yet, but I heard the Braves are going to wear blue jerseys for some games this season. They haven’t decided yet when to wear them, but one option discussed is to use them as a road alternate jersey.”

“They won’t be the powder-blues the team wore in the ‘80s, but a new jersey with their regular dark blue. Again, none of this is official and Braves aren’t commenting unless and until it is.”

I don’t think they’re awful..The screengrabs make them look bad, however on TV they look quite good and innovative. In certain angles, the lettering is more than visible, similar to the head of an actual mallard duck!

The fit of the uniforms is what seals the deal for me. I love the form fitting tops, and the shorts not billowing too much is a good look! Plus some of them are wearing all black Nike Flightposite 1 retros, which is AWESOME!

i think the “oregon” and NOB are actually green. either way, whoever thought these were a good idea needs to be shot. it reminds me of some random 80s deodorant commercial where they use basketball footage in the background but have to delete the team names off the jerseys.

oh wait, this has us talking about it, so it’s a good idea. my bad.

I usually like the uniforms that Nike provides for Oregon but those black basketball uniforms have to go!!

Glad to hear the Braves might have a blue alternate jersey never really liked the red (wish it was a little darker) might have to get one.

From the Twins blog with the St.Paul Pioneer Press this morning:

First thing you notice about the jerseys is the absence of a patch on the right sleeve. Two years ago, Kirby Puckett’s initials were there, and last season Herb Carneal’s microphone occupied that space. Let’s hope there is no reason not to keep it vacant this year.

One other note about the uniforms: They’re not made of the normal uniform fabric. The Twins have added lightweight tops, made out of material that feels almost like mesh, for particularly hot games. They’ll wear them down here, and anywhere it gets particularly hot (though the Twins’ only visit to Texas this year is in April.) They look exactly the same, but the players appreciated the different, light feel.

I don’t remember Kirby’s initials being anywhere on the jerseys. I do remember a black 34, though.

Wow, those Oregon jerseys are awful! Why would they put the OREGON and the NOB in black also? NO ONE CAN READ IT! Dummies…..

Well, they get very hot in the polyester. You know, it’s not a natural fibre. I think they would prefer cotton.

Why is the “C” in UCLA’s jersey yellow?

Two funny quotes from the announcers at the UCLA-Oregon game about the Oregon unis:

“These uniforms should be put in a trunk and buried under McArthur Court.”

“They’re very creative and they’ve come up with great uniforms over the years, but I’m just not sold on this one.”

Don’t play for the name on the back of your jersey, but the one on the front…if you can find it. I’m pretty sure it’s there somewhere…above the numbers, perhaps?

More of the Oregon debacle

Note: Look at #12’s uni. You can’t even see the “Oregon” on his jersey.

If someone could restore my post that would be great. Thanks in advance!

Not really uni-related. Just 5 hot cheerleaders hanging from a football goalpost. Something you don’t see everyday:

http://i.cnn.net/si/...

This is a perfect example of how one can’t read the “Oregon” on their new black SOD uni’s.

Wow… I didn’t like my post resurrection would be that quick. So sorry for the double post with the same pic.

To show who has a radio in their helmet. Or something.

nice!

and just for those who didn’t get the reference

Good call. I also immediately thought of Youngblood. I’ll never forget his split-sticker in the ‘83 Toppes Sticker Album showing him in each uniform. Couldn’t find a pic, but Fleer did a similar thing on an ‘83 card.

re: that weird Rangers commercial.
Does anybody remember Roger Clemens selling soap?
It’s weird to see him…scrawny.

Boomer Sooner!

looking thru the dodgers spring training photo gallery on mlb.com i saw in pictures 6 and 7 of the album theres a player wearing a strange alternate jersey not the team’s regular BP jersey… just an observation but i kind of like the uni

heres the link:

Stars @ Preds… Dallas wearing their “home” black with “Dallas” across the front, Nashville wearing their “away” whites with Nashville above the logo… Sorry, but even as a Preds fan, I think I know where my team calls home… Call me old, but home=white w/nickname…

Or, under the new Phil Knight’s Hideous Uniforms ThatBites Blows Stinks and Sucks All AT The Same Time Arena with the football unis as well. After all, only one team in the Beaver State should be allowed to wear black. (Hint in boldface.)

I think they have a new alternate blue for this year, and that would be it I assume.

I’ll also just answer the question – the C is a different color because it’s a 100 year anniversary for UCLA and C is 100 in Roman numerals.

See. That wasn’t so hard.

Close. UCLA opened in 1919. The C is to commemorate the 100th championship by the athletic department. Not hard at all.

I remember an episode in teh NHl where a player was traded to that night’s opponents during the warm-up. He went in to the locker room, got told the news, went over to teh new locker room and played for his new teams. I think it might have been Esa Tikkanen.

Remember, we don’t play for the names on the back of the uniform, we play for the name on the fr…

Never mind. Electrical tape on black is a bad idea.

SB

Even ESPN got into the Oregon fiasco…”and Oregon is wearing God-awful uniforms”..

Gracias, LI Phil.

BTW, just saw Priscilla Presley at the Tennessee-Memphis game tonight. That reminds me of one of the greatest movie lines that I have ever seen from The Naked Gun with her and Leslie Nielsen:

Lt. Frank Drebin: (Looking up a ladder) Nice beaver.
Jane Spencer: (Climbing down ladder with stuffed beaver) Thanks, I had it stuffed.

Overpriced & overrated

Unless you play for Bayern Munich.

Go over to ESPN.com right now and check the Indiana/K-State recap video. A couple of ex-coach tributes on the shoes.

Oops. Northwestern, not K-State. Wrong purple-wearing Wildcats.

I just figured it out. Phil Knight channeling his inner Harold Ballard.

Why in the world do you make the “Oregon” text black?? WHY? Who sat down at a board meeting and said, “Hey, why don’t we make the entire uniform black. But not just the uniform black, but the NOB and the text on the front a shiny black?”

and then you had guys say that it was a good idea. who are these people??

They are old BP jerseys. As you say, some old stuff always gets broken out in spring training.
