Not off the wall at all. In fact there are pictures ON the walls in the interior of Memorial Stadium of pictures where the IU football team has helmets that are cream and crimson (see the helmet with the angled “IU” monogram in this photo). You are quite correct, though, about the fact that IU uses white as its primary fabric color for uniforms. I have a feeling that this is probably because white fabric was easier to come by in the way-back days. My other feeling is that, because white simply looks sharper and cleaner, IU used it go give themselves a better look. Also, I have a feeling that, if IU went to cream-colored uniforms, they would look something like the San Diego Padres.

My recollection was that IU football wore cream colored pants and jerseys with the slanted IU logo for ONE YEAR in the early 1980’s when Sam Wyche was the head football coach.

He left for the NFL after one year and the cream went with him.

That Chris Webber shot is Webber wearing a Michigan uniform that was retired after the ‘89 season. It was probably something sitting around the equipment room, hence why it was so damn tight. The 1990 team was the first to wear the new design, and the 1991 team, with Webber as a freshman, were the first to wear the maize alternates.

The Game-worn maize alternates, according to Jersey-Joe, were made by Russell Athletic, as opposed to the retail version which were made by Nike. I have searched far and wide to get my hands on either, only finding the Navy. A friend whom I taught with had a pair but was unwilling to part with them, much to my dismay!

Russell supplied the uniforms during the Fab Five era. There’s a passage in the Mitch Albom Fab Five book about how the manager of the M Den (the Michigan Athletic Department’s retail store) ordered 125 jerseys and shorts from Russell identical to those worn by the team, not even sure if they’d sell. And they did within a few days. Michigan wasn’t a Nike school until 1995, at which time the Fab Five-era uniforms were still being work. Michigan didn’t change uniforms until the Nike big block M design in ‘98, which was the template also worn by North Carolina and a couple other schools.

The block M style was worn by Jamal Crawford and lasted just about as long as he did in Ann Arbor.
However, I did like those templates, not nearly as much as the Fab Five era. The Block M style had a MICHIGAN wordmark across the rear of the shorts which was a nice touch.

On the other hand, the Eddie Cota, Joe Forte era block NC was a travesty in my mind. Was Coach Guthridge there for that?

I LOVE the shorts from that Michigan template. They were used all the way from, I believe, 1998 up until about 2003. I have a pair of both the blue and the maize, wear ‘em every time I strap on the sneakers for an IM game.
