My knowledge of competitive swimming is pretty limited: I know that Mark Spitz won a shitload of gold medals in 1972, that for a while you couldn’t talk about the East German women’s team without using the term “saliva test,” and that swimmers go through more razor blades than the average person.
But I know a whooooooole lot more about swimming today than I did a day ago — a lot more than I want to know, frankly. For starters, I know that Australia’s Leisel Jones has a bit of back flab. I also know that America’s Amanda Beard definitely isn’t living up to her name. And I learned three things about superduperstar Michael Phelps: 1) He’s got a Christ complex; 2) he’s got the Olympic rings tattooed onto his right hip; and 3) well, see for yourself.
I know all of this, and more, thanks to Speedo, which unveiled its new LZR Racer swimsuit all over the world yesterday. According to this article (which was accompanied by a photo that appears to have been heavily Photoshopped in at least one crucial aspect), the suit has 10% less passive drag than Speedo’s previous Olympic model. And let’s face it, it’s pretty obvious which body part is providing the drag.
More than 50 countries are expected to wear the suit at the Olympics later this year, but the suit will make its competitive debut this weekend at the Missouri Grand Prix. Which just goes to show another thing I just learned: Who knew there were swimming pools in Missouri?
It’s bad enough that they’re rolling out a swimsuit that leaves so little to the imagination, but the name “LZR Racer” surely sets a new standard for loathsome branding. So I was amused to see that the USA Today article kept referring to the suit as “Lzr,” with only one capital letter, which no doubt annoyed the crap out of everyone at the Speedo offices. Or at least I hope it did.
(Thanks to Jeremy Brahm and bench coach Bryan Redemske for their contributions to today’s entry.)
Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday I ran this photo, which led some readers to track down this page, which in turn led to some chatter in the comments section about $32 being a lot to pay for a T-shirt (which just goes to show that Jews really do hate to pay retail). That shot is taken from this awesome video clip (great find by Ricardo Almonte). … What is it about athletes wearing No. 32, even if it’s not their regular uni number? First it was Kirby Puckett, then Cal Ripken, and now Todd Krevanchi has turned up an old shot of Chris Webber wearing 32. “Is 32 a universally accepted jersey number for generic media shots?” he asks. Paul as a former swimmer and someone still around the sport(and their suits) today being a swimmer means that pretty much you see your fellow athletes junk…and even more so for the girls. And swimmers don’t really care IMO, wearing a speedo brief shows just as much if not more then this new suit does. I have seen girl swimmers swim in practically sheer fabric and when i asked if they wanted a different suit they said it just doesn’t care, the suits help more so mentally then physically IMO. It’s that advantage which is comparable to the new heated skates in hockey.
Also that picture of the girl with black flab is actually the suit, squashing her boobs in. Swimmers usually don’t have breasts and when they do you get eye sores like that.

Webber allegedly started being courted by Martin as an eighth grader and trying to decide which high school to attend. Between 1988 and 1993, Ed Martin allegedly gave Webber (and his family) over a quarter of a million dollars.
Ed Martin became friends with Bill Frieder through Perry Watson, who was the coach at Detroit Southwestern HS at the time (Jalen Rose’s alma mater) When Freider left the team and Steve Fisher took over, Martin’s influence on the program increased. I could go on, but it’s a bit much. If you want more details, the Michigan Daily has a timeline

My thoughts on the 32 situation: 32 is a binary number. Binary numbers tend to have many aesthetically appealing qualities (see link I pasted under this paragraph). 32 in particular is also the first two-digit binary number that doesn’t have a ‘1′ in it, meaning there’s a balance in width between the two digits, also aesthetically pleasing to the eye since there’s a natural “kerning” of the characters. The only other two-digit binary number would be 64, which is a rather awkward number in most sports, with football being the possible exception.

Not off the wall at all. In fact there are pictures ON the walls in the interior of Memorial Stadium of pictures where the IU football team has helmets that are cream and crimson (see the helmet with the angled “IU” monogram in this photo). You are quite correct, though, about the fact that IU uses white as its primary fabric color for uniforms. I have a feeling that this is probably because white fabric was easier to come by in the way-back days. My other feeling is that, because white simply looks sharper and cleaner, IU used it go give themselves a better look. Also, I have a feeling that, if IU went to cream-colored uniforms, they would look something like the San Diego Padres.

When you play in a football all-star game, be it high school, college, or professional, it’s common to trade something with another teams logo on it with your teammates. The most commonly traded is the decals of your helmet (in high school anyway). A lot of guys will trade t-shirts, etc…

I’m still bitter over the 1981 strike, which resulted in the split season. The Reds had the best record in baseball overall, but finished in second place in each half of the split season, and therefore did not make the playoffs. What a fiasco.

I think the San Francisco Giants have shown that cream can look really sharp.

This is nothing new to any cyclist who’s been unfortunate enough to ride for a team with colored shorts.

Just spoke with Jews for Jeter T-shirt folks — the discount should work on the shirt, no other purchase (or $50 minimum) required. If anyone’s having problems, e-mail me directly.

That Chris Webber shot is Webber wearing a Michigan uniform that was retired after the ‘89 season. It was probably something sitting around the equipment room, hence why it was so damn tight. The 1990 team was the first to wear the new design, and the 1991 team, with Webber as a freshman, were the first to wear the maize alternates.

Please tell me I’m not the only one that remembers when all digital clock peel-off stickers showed “12:07″ … if I remember right, it was determined around the early 90s (right or wrong, I don’t know) that the clock makers, most of which were/are Japanese, made it 12:07 as a not-so-subtle “dig” at the US (12:07 … 12/7 … Pearl Harbor Day), and they were asked to change to something less offensive.
Wow … just the information I thought I’d be posting on Pitchers & Catchers Report/Lynch Roger Clemens Day!
(oh man … I hope I don’t get kicked off the Golf Channel for that comment)

why didn’t they just pick 42… i mean, afterall, according to the hitchhikers guide “it is the answer to………………….”
We all know that #42 is retired throughout baseball for Jackie Robinson so that wouldn’t work…
… oh my goodness dude… nevermind
