It remains one of the sports world’s enduring mysteries: Every year the NFL selects the best players at each position, gathers them together for an all-star game in Honolulu, and then humiliates them by dressing them in the most god-awful uniforms imaginable. I’m not gonna bother going over every unsightly detail of this year’s design, because it’s pointless — every new Pro Bowl uniform is the worst ever, until the next one is unveiled. It’s almost like the league is saying, “Yeah, okay, so you get your free trip to Hawaii, you get to party with hula girls, you get to drink piña coladas out of a coconut shell, but don’t think you’re gonna get out of this without paying a certain price.”
As you know, medical research has concluded that only 17 people on the planet have the gene required to watch the entire Pro Bowl without falling asleep (and five of them, perversely, are African tribesmen who don’t own television sets), so there’s a good chance you missed at least a few of Sunday’s more noteworthy details. Here’s a quick guide:
• By far the most significant development — and I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, boys and girls, either in the comments section or in e-mails to me — is that all the players were wearing a new pants design, with added seams and panels on the rear thigh (here’s the AFC version), kind of like a football version of MLB’s Cool Base jersey gussets. I’m not sure if this was for added flexibility, ventilation, or both, but man did it look like shit. Let’s hope this wasn’t a test drive for league-wide implementation next season.
• As many of you are already aware, Derek Anderson had quite a little adventure with his jersey patches. A few days prior to the game, he was photographed with his left shoulder patch upside-down. On game day it was fixed (or, more likely, he’d just switched to a different jersey) but now the patch on his right shoulder was askew. Not only that, but compare that last photo, which shows the facemask pointing down roughly to five o’clock, to this shot, which appears to show the facemask oriented more toward four o’clock. Just how many defective jerseys did Anderson wear in one week? (Big thanks to Dominic Atencio and John Boris for the screen grabs.)
• The Chargers’ official lightning bolt logo use to be white outlined in gold, but this season it was changed gold outlined in light blue and navy. So why were all the San Diego players in the game wearing the now-defunct white logo on their shoulders? Interestingly, the jerseys for sale at NFL.com got it right.
• Terrell Owens wore at least two different pairs of cleats: white trimmed with blue and silver (plus, as Nick Hanson notes, he also wore a cross necklace).
• Speaking of cleats, look what Tony Romo was wearing.
• That’s quite a pustule Peyton Manning had on his knee.
• No photo, but Osi Umenyiora still had the Super Bowl XLII decal on the back of his helmet. Anyone notice if the Patriots players had it too?
• The new NFL logo finally made its on-field debut, on the MVP trophy (although it looks like they used the old logo here). And it’s good to see that Adrian Peterson’s uni number gets gunked up in the Pro Bowl, just like in a regular game.
• And that’s finally that.
Next year, let’s have some throwbacks, shall we?
Uni Watch News Ticker: Check out who’s wearing striped socks — the astronauts who are currently up in space (with thanks to Rob B). … A nice selection of Karl Ehrhardt’s sign work is shown in this video clip (a forwarded by Matt Edwards). … Got an on-site query yesterday morning from Ryan Perkins, as follows: “I’m in a restaurant in Jackson, Mississipi, sitting by a huge picture of Kent Hull (who was from Greenwood, Mississippi). I can clearly read ‘Wet Rat’ printed on the tongue of each side of his Reebok Pumps. Did some Googling and found nothing. Any idea if this was on all the pumps or if this was custom-done for Hull? And either way, what did it mean?” Anyone..? … Wake Forest was wearing new kicks on Saturday. Lots of interesting details on these sneakers, including a very subtle Skip Prosser memorial — for the full scoop, check out this page, written by Uni Watch charter member Zach Smith. … Northern Kentucky’s women’s hoops team will be wearing 1970s throwbacks this Saturday. Full details here (with thanks to Steve Hensley). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Lots of coverage here about Rick Pitino changing suits in the middle of a game the other day. … The Aussie rugby team sure looks sharp — yes, even with that little purple ribbon on the guy’s leg. Anyone know what that’s for? … Good interview here with the principals of Plan B Branding, the San Diego-based design firm that’s responsible for a lot of current minor league uni designs (with thanks to Greg Victor). … The Staten Island Yankees have unveiled a new logo for every day of the week. Okay, not quite, but almost. “Looks like a cartoon version of the classic Yankee stuff,” says Tyler Kepner. “I’d actually like the block SINY thing, if it were for a sleeve patch and not a cap logo. Also: A short-season class A team with FIVE cap styles? That’s a little much, no?” Indeed. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Fascinating college hoops game recently, featuring Grand Valley wearing throwbacks against Northern Michigan, whose jerseys have no lettering — just huge uni numbers fore and aft (and those aren’t throwbacks — those are their regular unis!). … Seth Horowitz spotted this at a Yankees game last year. … Doug Keklak reports that Penguins fantasy camper get to wear the team’s original scarf-clad penguin (although the color scheme is an odd choice).

Not sure about the purple ribbon, but the Aussie rugby photo is an old one. They haven’t worn the striped sleeves like that for a couple of years (here’s the current design). On top of that, the pic is from Australia’s IRB Sevens team, and they haven’t competed in that since 2005.

I’m not saying I like the Pro Bowl, but I watch. I’m sorry, but I watch. It’s the last sniff of football until late July and that’s too long.
For decades, all-star games were taken at face value and to whatever extent enjoyed. What has happened in the last 10 to 15 years that they have to be more? The games really haven’t changed, but the participants certainly have and the fans expectations unquestionably have. Why, I’m really not sure but it would be hard to refute the notion that we have become increasingly demanding, wanting more, more and more out of our entertainment. That may or may not be an indictment of our culture but a pretty apparent fact.
Let’s pretend (for just a second!) there was a law that mandated the Pro Bowl and abolishing it would not be an option. What would make it more palatable to the player and the fans that hate it so much? Well here goes:
Make it a “players game”. Eliminate pretty much all the “unnecessary” rules applied the other 99% of the time. Other than making them wear the basic Pro Bowl unis, let them tailor them how they want, a message sticker or two, special shoes, excessive celebrations. Anything not safety related or in poor taste goes.
This could be an answer to all the “No Fun League” stuff. People would watch because they might see something they’ve never seen.

We have all driven the “21″ tribute by the Redskins to Sean Taylor into the ground. The sight of seeing a lineman like Ethan Albright wearing #21 is just way too weird.

Not quite. The XV and 7s team jerseys have been different for a number of teams, for a number of years. The pic Paul posted is from 2007. The current 7s jersey is similar to the one you posted. And yes, the Aussies still compete in 7s. Just not very successfully.

I spoke to some friends Sunday afternoon and had absolutely no plan to watch the Pro Bowl. However, much like Twiedy said, it is the last football for awhile, and you know what, I actually liked seeing all of the players getting along and having FUN! At face value, I appreciated the “21″ gesture. To the casula fan channelsurfing seeing that they probably would have thought it was a noble gesture, as did I.
As for T.O.’s two sets of cleats, they were both cleated versions of the Air Jordan VI. For more such Jordan to cleat shenanigans, check this link.
As for Wake, they were in fact wearing the CP3’s, Chris Paul’s signature shoe made by Jordan Brand. Any yes, on the inside of the tongue, it is in fact a cursive SP, for Paul’s late coach Skip Prosser at Wake.
And Kent Hull wearing the Wet Rat pumps, they were not Player Exclusives, that was the name of the model, a turf shoe designed for inclement weather. They were a sort of hybrid between a turf and a molded cleat similar to the destroyer versions of Nike’s turf shoes, the first of which were used at the Vet by many of the Eagles including D. McNabb, who at one time was a Jordan Brand athlete.

Regarding the Pro Bowl, the only person I know that really watches that game with interest is my wife. I’ve never been into, it’s my least favorite of the four major all-star games. However, I’m not all about cancelling it like a lot in the media are suggesting. The wife scares me though, I wake up Saturday morning and she’s watching NFL Network and tells me, “I’ve been up since 8 watching this stuff”. I do feel lucky and that’s she’s a keeper because of this, but I think that’s a bit much!!!!!
I do like those very plain throwbacks (although I don’t think the coaches should be wearing shorts THAT short!). However, I wouldn’t mind seeing a few things. As we were watching i said to my wife “they should have the refs dress in hawaiian shirts or at least wearing a lei”. Another thing could be to incorporate elements of the native culture to the uni like the University has done so nicely.
Two other ideas would be with the helmet. Upon my trip to Canton a few years ago to the HoF, I really liked the look of the old AFC and NFC helmets. Maybe they could go back to that look, and you know what, the league could market it and sell mini-helmets. They sell the jerseys already. It would be good item for autograph seekers to get because you could get mulitple players on one helmet even if they aren’t on the same team.
The other would be to take a page out of the college book and do a decal swap. There’s probably some unique stuff you could do on some helmets.

I know the topic of pink has been harped on in here a lot. I’m of the camp that thinks it’s no big deal and that the cause trumps the fact that your favorite team/school doesn’t look right in them (the Pitt women’s team didn’t look that bad in my opinion though).
We all know the pink is a breast cancer thing. However, one thing I’ve been wondering is green for St. Patrick’s Day. Both the Steelers and Pitt’s online store feature items that are green but the team’s colors have no green. I find this much worse than the pink because at least the pink is helping raise money for a worthy cause. Does this green stuff go to some Irish charity or is it just fashionable?
Sorry if this has been addressed before, I’ve been out of the loop of the comments for a long time.

Hey, $10 is $10.
I got a nice Kurt Warner Rams’ jersey from NFLshop.com after he left STL for $9.99, too. I like #13, I like Kurt Warner. Problem was, the NFL then figured I was a Rams fan and started sending me personalized catalogs full of Rams stuff.
If you liked the Dolphins, liked irony and didn’t care what people thought, you could do a lot worse than to pay $10 for a replica jersey.
Shows what the things are really worth versus what we pay for them normally.
