If there’s ever been an NHL fight more likely to end in awesomeness, it was this one on Friday night. Florida’s Olli Jokinen looks like he’s getting ready to dive in and start biting. Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler looks like he’s getting ready to grapple WWE-style. Unorthodox techniques on both sides, to be sure.
So what happened? This is what happened. What did I say? Awesomeness.
Uni-related notes here: The Panthers’ yellow piping detail looks ridiculous, especially when overlapped by a bright white C. The hemline on the Canucks’ jerseys aims less toward ridiculous and more toward silly. And for frick’s sake, someone wash Kesler’s breezers!
Go forth into awesomeness. — Bryan

The second I turned this game on, I was shocked at how bad the Panthers jersey’s stuck out. The piping looks awful (especially with the captain’s C or A over the top). I could have swore I also saw a paw on one guys jersey overlap (maybe a smaller player?). Also, the half arm strips on the elbows are ugly. The shoulder stripping ends behind the neck to allow the Reebok logo, which really sticks out.
Then again, as they showed fans in the crowd with old Panthers jerseys, they weren’t much better (with the pointed shoulder stripping).

last night, UMass Amherst @ Northeastern was the Hockey East Game of the Week on NESN. UMass was wearing gray breezers. generally they have maroon breezers, like in this picture. I thought the grays looked really cool.
The only place I could find a good picture of the grays was in a flash-based photo gallery located here. click on the 10/20/2007 HCKY vs. UCONN link.

Football: Raiders. Simple and effective.
Basketball: I’m not a huge basketball fan, but I’ll go with the Clippers out of my limited knowledge.
Hockey: Only one choice here: Canadiens. Honorable mentions to the Bruins and Canucks.

To answer all of the above threads at once:
-best uni in hockey is Les Glorieux. I try not to be a uniform reactionary (or at least not as reactionary as some here), but some unis were born perfect. (Actually, interesting to see the subtle uni-differences there).
-In the second photo from Bryan, I think Kesler is trying to reshape Jokinen into the Canucks’ leaping-orca logo.
-I can do without black jerseys, green dots, and uni-minutia, but sometimes the Song Girls are the only thing that get me through the day. ‘Kay?

The US has used plenty of alternate jerseys. The men had light blue pinstripes, the women had pink jerseys, and this is all just in the last year or two.
I can’t be bothered to look it up right now, but I’m willing to bet that there have been plenty of other alt. national team jerseys between now and 1979

Still, this red France jersey is really big news in Europe, where the only thing teams happen to alter are socks and shorts. With France and Italy being the last two countries not to have ever changed their away colors , this move could be followed by a lot.

Here’s my “Canadian” take. We’ve always called them pants, not “breezers” and especially not “shorts”.
During the disaster known as the “Cooperall period”, there were actually two components – the girdle and the shell, which was either short with socks or ugh… long, with no pants. Thankfully, that is no more, however, there are guys out there who will wear a shell over their pants.
Again, the “Breezers” term seem strictly a Minnesota thing, so I would say that any general discussion regarding hockey should refer to the name pants. Thanks!

Bad piping or not, I still think the Panthers color scheme is great. No one else really combines those colors, I think it looks great. Panther logo is not the best, but I do enjoy the Stick/Palm cross shoulder logo. Just as a shoulder logo though. If they got rid of the piping I think the jerseys would be great, guess thats just me.
Every time I see the Canucks jersey the worse it looks. Moreso the whites. Removing the “Vancouver” and adding some green to the logo would go a long way, but I think they need to increse the stripes, it looks too bland but not clean enough. It just seems like its supposed to have more stripes. Looks like a high school team jersey with a modern logo slapped on it. They either need to go full tilt old school (their originals/last years alts) or make it sync up better with the current logo. Its a weird mish mash.

The Oakland A’s single A affiliate in the NWL, the Vancouver Canadians, unveiled their new logo last week. They ditched the blue, added some grey and tweaked the lettering. The main change is the change from the C by adding an apostrophe S.
Looks sharp in my eyes, though the new uniforms haven’t been revealed yet. One problem that’s plagued the C’s, based from what I saw last season, is their inability to wear their socks properly. Here’s hoping there’s an end to the pajama pants.

I’m curious to know what everyone’s LEAST favorite is (or would most like to see changed). I had a bunch of links, but my post disappeared
MLB: Baltimore Orioles and the San Diego Padres
NFL: Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals
NBA: Three headed monster of the Warriors, Bobcats and Wizards
NHL: Anaheim Ducks

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals
NFL: Oakland Raiders (though they haven’t been good in years)
NBA: Boston Celtics (I wish they would use the throwback regularly.)
NHL: Tie — Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks

I grew up on the rinks of northern/mid michigan… i heard breezers/pants pretty equally, but i had a lot of canadian coaches, so it my not be a fair representation.
MLB: Yankees whites
NFL: GreenBay greens
NHL: Blackhawks reds
NBA: Celtics not-black

NCAA Hockey: LSSU blues
CHL hockey: Ottawa 67’s

Hockey pants are hockey pants. They’re neither shorts nor breezers. Consider it an endearing quirk. :-)
Speaking of the NHL, all of the jerseys with the bib stripes are horrible. I assume that’s where the jersey panels are stitched together. I don’t see why Reebok didn’t just change the panel size because it also screwed up the shoulder panels/designs/colors.

Sorry, but I threw out the likes of the Yankees, Colts, Celtics, and Red Wings. Personally, I think you need to have more than white and one other color — they’re just to bland/blah for me.

Since some of us are listing our least favorite, I thought I’d add mine in:
MLB: formerly the D-Backs original entire uniform lineup, now probably the Rockies and Blue Jays
NFL: Falcons, Cardinals, and Seahawks’ monochrome
NBA: nothing grosses me out too much, so I’ll just say the Suns and Kings
NHL: Thrashers and the Banana Slugs

I’ve got the Wings-Bruins game on now and it is a thing of beauty. It makes me even more pissed off that the Wings get stuck playing the likes of the Predators, Sharks and Blue Jackets 4 times a season and only get to play each Original 6 team ONCE. Where’s the decency in this goddamn world?

LEAST FAVORITE ENSEMBLES
MLB: Toronto Blue Jays. Not enough blue for a team called the Blue Jays. Get blue hats, please. While you’re at it, let your home uniforms have a passing resemblance to the roadies. A common number font would be a good start. And nice try with the flashback uniform. White at home, losers. Dishonorable mention goes to the Mets, Padres, and Astros for essentially turning their “official” road grays into sparingly-used anti-clash road alternates. Exhibits A, B, and C why alternate jersey regulation could be a good thing in the majors.
NFL: Buffalo Bills. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think the RBK Edge system leaked its way into the NFL through these uniforms. Rectangular shoulders that scream, “Look at this, ain’t it tacky?”, stupid socks (either have a nice stripe job, or have one color on top of white, please), and a sensual overload of almost-like colors (white and silver, royal and navy, in addition to red) make their current uniforms the worst. Throwback alternates remind us of how look they used to look. Dishonorable mention goes to the Bengals, if only for the consistently inconsistent side panel. Above the armpit? Below? Why not change its color so we can’t tell?
NBA: Phoenix Suns. Under-arm side panels are rarely good, but my G-d, those full-length side panels are atrocious. Gray does not look good next to purple or orange. Last names would look better straight or vertically arched. The radial arch they have now gets clownish even with seven letters (Barbosa). What if they had Skitishvili? I’m getting skittish…Dishonorable mention to the Mavericks, which must have the Suns’ template due to their surname woes. Dishonorable mention revoked from the Pacers because they don’t have pinstripes anymore.
NHL: I could flag any team with upper right front jersey numbers. I don’t like the look because it makes the jersey too full, and can leave no room for a Stanley Cup or memorial patch. If you insist, why not move the number down to the front right thigh? For argument’s sake, let’s roast the Buffaslug Sabres for starting the damned trend, for having a terrible crest, having stupid shorts/pants/breezers, and for the pain and suffering caused by last year’s modern/throwback mismatch. Dishonorable mention to the Islanders (their Franken-jerseys make them the Buffalo Bills of the NHL), the Ducks (that word mark makes for a really weak “crest”), and all teams with un-wraparound sock stripes.

Favs:
NFL: Tie between the Titans, Panthers, And Eagles. I love the titans colors scheme, but i think they should change to the light blue for their normal home jersey, and change the yoke on the white jersey to navy. I also love the Panther’s color scheme, and their pants striping is the best. and i love the Eagle’s pants template. i love the thick black/slate gray on the midnight green with the white piping in between. Close fourth is new orleans, they have an awesome color scheme.
MLB: Tigers. Great color scheme, and i love the old english font.
NBA: Suns. Nice template, and Excluding the orange alternate, i don’t think that the orange is overdone. If they replaced the orange in the color scheme to mettalic gold, it would look better.
NCAA Football: Texas. Classic template, and a simple, but great, color scheme. their all white road uniforms are the best in football, even better than anything in the NFL.
#119 by Nate on 02.02.08 10:07 pm |
least favorites:
NFL: Dallas. They can’t get their colors straight. Also Oakland. Black and silver just looks bad without another color
MLB: San Diego. I hate the urine colored home jersey
NBA: San Antonio. see Oakland raiders.
NCAA football: Oregon state, horrible template. i actually like the way Oregon mixes up the pants, jerseys and helmets, but they need a better template. one similar to the Tennessee titans might work.

I’ll just push the sarcasm button for you…
For the record, the original question asked for the best and worst uniform sets, asking to take into account the home jersey, the away, and any alternates. This is what makes the Blue Jays’ uniforms terrible. Almost no common elements from one style to the other. Totally disjointed. Because of that, I didn’t mention the Wizards. Their New Orleans Saints wanna-be uniforms are TERRIBLE, but their regulars aren’t that bad. The Suns got my Golden Razzie for a consistently putrid set.
So, you ask, why didn’t I criticize the Cowboys for their lack of matching? Because Mr. Lukas has a whole article on that. Besides, at least the Cowboys uniforms say, “I’m a Dallas Cowboy,” while the Bills uniforms merely complete the wardrobe malfunction trinity, along with the Go Daddy in court girl and Janet Jackson.

YES! I KNEW the tri-color paneling (for a lack of a better term) of the Suns reminded me of something! That’s it. Not a great soccer look, but an even worse basketball look due to a lack of basketball sleeves. Extra turd points go to Ajax because their name letters are white with a thin red border. So names can be long enough to get truncated on the sides. So SZCZERBIAK might read ZERB or something like that. A picture demonstrating this was an Open Thread a while back. Chalk that one up as a design flaw…

Buffalo Bills period, end of list. There is no team even close. Not even the really sweet throwback/alts can mitigate the nastiness of their home/road combo.
