New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: Everyone loves to hear about unusual NOBs, like Andy Messersmith’s “Channel” or Elvin Hayes’s “E” (complete with history’s biggest quote marks). Photos, however, aren’t always so easy to come by. I’ve read (and written) abut Jim Grant’s “Mudcat” jersey, for example, but I’ve never actually seen it. Same goes for Ken Harrelson’s “Hawk,” Dick Allen’s “Wampum,” and most of the oddities worn by the 1976 Braves (Jimmy Wynn’s “Cannon,” Ralph Garr’s “Roadrunner,” Jerry Royster’s “Rooster,” and several more).
One of the most storied of these examples is the case of Giants infielder Johnnie LeMaster, who in 1979 was getting booed so vociferously by the Candlestick fans that he wore “Boo” on the back of his jersey for one game. The crowd supposedly laughed when they saw it — and then booed again. Or least that’s the story I’d always heard, but there were never any photos. This page, for example, notes that LeMaster “showed some gallows humor for the Giants, once stitching the word ‘Boo’ on the back of his jersey,” but the photo doesn’t show the NOB (and isn’t even from the right season).
Then, a few days ago, Ethan Rowley sent me this — paydirt! It remains a mystery how fans could boo anyone with such picture-perfect stirrups, but the universe can be inscrutable like that sometimes. Another mystery: How did LeMaster get the equipment manager to go along with this little scheme?
Ethan found the photo, incidentally, in a book — specifically, this book, which as you can see is available almost for free at Amazon.

Danger, Will Robinson!: Be forewarned: The link I’m about to give you is so addictive, and has so much great stuff, it will probably shoot your entire day to hell. It’s for photographer Steve Dewing’s site, and it’s a friggin’ mother lode of MLB pics from the 1960s and ’70s. This period, of course, straddled the changeover from flannels to double-knits, so on the one hand you’ve got fuzzy jerseys and classic stirrups (often striped!), and on the other hand you’ve also got lots of fodder for the “What were they thinking?” file. I’m particularly fond of this shot — not just a haloed helmet, but dig those color-blocked stirrups. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a good photo of them.
As you can see, the image quality is sensational, the colors are super-saturated, and most of the pics are ones I’ve never seen before. I’m tellin’ ya, people, this site is like crack — once you enter, kiss the rest of your day buh-bye. Check it out here, if you dare, but don’t blame me if you end up swimming in a puddle of your own drool. (Feel free, however, to blame Don Sherman, who brought the site to my attention.)
Uni Watch News Ticker: Tragedy, tragedy. … Beau Stahnke attended the Giants/Packers playoff game two Sundays ago and has finally thawed out enough to send along some photos. Among the highlights: Korey Hall with a big chip off of his helmet; Vernand Morency with maybe a few too many handwarmers in his pocket; Koren Robinson looking macho stupid with his socks down; and the Pack’s cheerleading squad. … Dan Richardson has contributed what I believe is our first-ever Ticker item about lacrosse throwbacks. The team in question is the New Westminster Sr Salmonbellies — North America’s oldest established lacrosse club, going back to 1889 — who play in the Western Lacrosse Association in British Columbia. They’ve taken the team’s 1950s uni (also seen here) and used it as the basis for a throwback design, as seen here. Lots of additional pics in this photo gallery. … Last week I ran a Ticker item linking to this photo. Will Shepard informs me that this is actually part of a series of manipulated brand-centric images by the artist Hank Willis Thomas. They’re part of Thomas’s “B®anded” series, which you can access on his site. And if you think I don’t like Nike, wait until you see his stuff. … Here’s something I’ve never seen before: Billy Bucks with his uni number inscribed on his sunglasses (good find by Greg Riffenburgh). … Did you know Jackie Robinson also played basketball? Full details here. … What’s he smoking, and where can I get some?

I have seen one picture of the Hawk Harrelson jersey. It is on a 1970 Topps baseball card insert that was included with the first series of cards that year. They raised the price of the cards from 5 cents a pack to 10 cents a pack and to alleviate the shock of the increase, Topps included something in every series of wax packs. The first series had these mini posters. One was of Ken Harrelson. It has a picture of Harrelson’s face and an action shot that shows “Hawk” on the back of the jersey. I think I still have it in my collection. If I can find it, I’ll scan it and email it.

I didn’t read the story because I’m on my way out the door to class, but Jackie Robinson also ran track and played football. I think it was on an ESPN Classic profile of him where I saw all this. In that picture of Bill Buckner, is that the infamous “Cubs” batting glove on his right hand sans the Cubs logo? It certainly looks to me to be a similar glove and the blue seems a bit too royal blue to match the Red Sox shade of dark blue. . .
When is that picture from? It would be interesting if it in fact was after the ‘86 world series.

Ilya Kovalchuk (before being injured) last night had a massive amount of tape on his sock. it looked almost like thick tacit packaging tape, something a lot of money broke adult leaguers and high school players would use. But I believe anything aside from clear is illegal in the NHL. It may not have been tape at all, could have been this. Which I’m unsure of its legality.

I have video of Johnnie LeMaster exhibiting such self-depreciating humor. Not his BOO jersey, but an old episode of ‘This Week in Baseball’ (maybe 1983?) where he appears on the highlights making a nice play at short then in an interview asking “Can I make a play, or what?”

MLB designated Rawlings official uniform supplier in 1987 (although several clubs including the Red Sox with their home set did not switch). Russell gained the same distinction in 1992. Along with the Red Sox home, the Yankees (H/A), Braves (H/A) Tigers (H), and Blue Jays (H/A) remained with Wilson. The Royals actually broke out a Wilson road set in the second half of 1989. I was told by a Wilson rep at the ‘89 Winter Meetings that the players complained about the fit of the Rawlings gear. Since the Rawlings stuff was provided at no cost to the club, the idea of paying for uniforms had little appeal and the fill Rawlings sets were back for 1990.
I have a harder time remembering the differences during the “Russell era”.

Not that unusual for that time. The photo looks to be from spring training and players often like to wear what is known as a “rubber shirt” to help them loose weight. In the 1960’s specialize equipment was often left up to the individual and I doubt Luis Tiant cared how it looked doing wind sprints.

I wish some of them were dated better. This picture is called “08041stanley57″ and this one is called “08042freehan57″. Neither of those guys played for the Tigers in 1957, so I am assuming it is some sort of set ID. Anyways, they appear to be close in time, yet the players are wearing caps with different old English Ds.
Also, for a period of time, the Tigers seem to have worn striped stirrups with their polyester road unis. I have seen vintage photos of the Tigers wearing stripes, but didn’t realize they did it that recently.

Great column on ESPN today, but I have to say I like the Giants look as it is. One thing I would like to see is red and blue striped socks with that instead of the solid reds. Make the sock stripes match the pattern and width of the stripes on the pants (thin red stripes outside of a thin blue stripe). Yes, it would go against the reason for having the all-red look (to honor the old uniforms) but I think it might work as a nice compromise between changing to all-blue and leaving it as it is. Just my two cents…

I’m surprised no one else has commented about this. I’m not a Giants fan, but I have to say that the current uniform is WAY better than Paul’s re-design (sorry, Paul). The red just stands out so well - switching to blue would be too plain, too common, too … blah.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I opened up a photobucket and a Flickr account to host my pics and link to them!
This yellow capped helmet is beautiful, any caps.

Seriously, that baseball site in icredible.
Looking at this pic of Rollie Fingers makes me wonder:
Have the A’s ever worn a cap with a yellow crown/green bill or all yellow with a green logo?
Never a yellow crown with green bill (although Reggie wore that color schemed helmet in the ’71 All-Star Game). All yellow caps (and helmets)were worn (perhaps ’69-’70).
Any pics of either?

Regarding Paul’s new ESPN article, I’m surprised nobody has commented on the Minnesota I-35W bridge tragedy decal on the rear of a Twins batting helmet. Could someone explain why on a Twins helmet the number is displayed using the Red Sox font? Hmm?

I would almost say add some blue stripes to the sleeves, DO NOT add a blue outline to the numbers

Turco’s new lid looks pretty nice, but I’d like to see it up close a little so we actually see what’s painted on there

Does anyone know what the Super Bowl XLIII logo will look like for next year? I know they come out usually a year ahead of time in the Program for the upcoming Super Bowl. Has anyone seen it yet?

My thoughts on the Giants unis are these:
Helmets are pretty darn cool. Pants are cool, but in some light look like dirty grey, still pretty nice.
But the jerseys are horrendous. The home blue is as boring as you could possibly get. Plain blue in a color that doesn’t match the helmet, with the only decorations being numbers I could make with a roll of tape. And as Paul so adequately pointed out, the road jerseys should be trimmed in BLUE not RED. The red Alt luckily combines the worst elements of each, the boringness of the the blue jersey with the odd overuse of red of the white jersey.
Man, fix those jerseys and the Giants unis would be great, but as is they suck.

See, even Tony Romo is laughing at the Giants’ red alternates.
“You look dumb.”
