I like curling. The rocks (striped!), the brooms, the target (very mod, don’tcha know). Too bad the uniforms are so lame-o.
Ah, but it didn’t used to be that way. Curlers used to wear special sweaters. And as Canadian readers Nick Maibroda and Aram Sarkisian both informed me yesterday, curling sweaters made a comeback of sorts last weekend. Aram explains:
I was watching the Grand Slam of Curling on CBC and noticed one of the teams had these absolutely fabulous sweaters. Turns out they had done badly in a previous tournament and wanted to change up their uniforms for good luck, so one of them logged onto eBay and found a set of vintage 1950s curling sweaters. Someone’s grandfather had worn them in the ’50s for about a dozen tournaments and they’d been mothballed for 50 years since then.
The team bought them all, matched them with checked pants, and wore them for the Grand Slam. At various points the sweaters proved a little warm, so a few of the guys took them off to reveal rather boring white Under Armour shirts. Aside from that, their only complaint about the duds was that they smelled really, really bad. Looked great, though. It’s all the CBC commentators talked about for a good 10 minutes at one point.
Awesome sweaters, awesome story. I especially like the cuff stripes and the upper sleeve patch. Seriously, which team would you rather be on? No contest. (There are more photos here, and some background on curling attire here.)
The sad news: Koe lost. The even sadder part: Look closely at the scoreboard and you’ll see the World Curling Tour logo. Not so bad if viewed in a vacuum, but c’mon, isn’t that design concept just a little played out? And why would a Canadian league stick to the red/white/blue color scheme? Odd.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Ohio State’s basketball team wore football-patterned shorts on Saturday. … Baseball Hall of Fame researcher Tom Shieber just turned up another instance of stolen uniforms necessitating makeshift solutions. Now we just need some photos. … Several readers noted that Tomas Kaberle appeared to be wearing a set of Atlanta Thrashers gloves during the skilils competition last weekend. Nick Hepburn quickly deduced that they must have been borrowed from Marian Hossa — except for that big “18″ on the thumb. Then Nick found this shot, which makes it clear that Hossa had taped over the number. … The Portland Beavers will be unveiling new uniforms today.

When I was a teenager I found my grandfather’s Oakville (Ontario) Curling Club sweater from the ’50s in a closet. It was beautiful - intricate chest patch with crossed brooms (similar to the shoulder patch shown above) and a great big collar. I think there might have been stripes around the upper arms, too. I wore it around as long as I could, until it started to fall apart. I don’t know where it is now - I think it might have been thrown out. What a waste! Misspent youth, I guess. No pics, sorry.

Here’s a classic curling sweater worn by the Moose Jaw Rat Rods. The now defunct team dominated the local scene from 1922-27 but dissolved itself when Walter Mudrunkle, the team’s charismatic octogenarian skip, was accused by Red McCurlihan, the team’s brilliant third, of making eyes at the mayor’s daughter. She had just turned twelve at the time and was patently off limits for another year. Though many dispute McCurlihan’s claims to this day, the ramifications of his accusations were felt for some time in the frontier town. McCurlihan drowned under mysterious circumstances in his personal still in 1933 and Mudrunkle eventually married the mayor’s daughter three years later, quit curling, and formed a touring barbershop quartet.

The WORLD Curling Tour is hardly a Canadian League. Jason Larway’s team from Bothwell, Washington, USA plays in the Tour, as does Thomas Ulsrud’s squad from Oslo, Norway. Granted, 16 of 18 teams are Canadian, but there are a couple of teams from outside the Great White North that play.
Also, Asham Curling Supplies sponsors the Tour. They arguably make the best curling gear and brooms on the market today. It’s not “A SHAM”… it’s pronounced “ASH-em”.

Does anybody feel that as well-intended as it may be, the camouflage jersey just might be cliché? I, for one, think it would be cool to have the following Franken-throwback: the jersey and pants of the early 1970’s (just before the pajama sets), but with the sleeves, socks, and hats changed to blue. This means you get the block of blue, with red and white stripes, just like the American flag. Or Carlos May’s career in a blender…

Full disclosure… I wear a St. Louis Blues replica with my name and number on the back. (The Blues don’t currently have a player wearing #1.) Should I content myself with searching for a Jim Merritt replica jersey? Or perhaps the more obscure Ahmad Merritt?
I’ve looked (unsuccessfully) for a Glenn Hall replica Blues sweater… they didn’t have names on the jerseys when “Mr. Goalie” and Jacques Plante combined for the Vezina. Living in Jonesboro, Arkansas, there aren’t too many folks wearing NHL sweaters of any sort… what say you, Uni-Watchers?

That’s why I prefer the grey alts as well. I had seen them on the Eastbay website, as well as, here, but had paid them no mind until I saw the game pics yesterday. I LOVE them and how the bucs wear them except for the black socks with their soldiers. Back in the day when Jay Burson and Treg Lee played at TOSU, they wore base grey Nike Air bounds and they looked great. They should return to that with their new alts.

I have a Fernando Tatis #23 Cardinals jersey. I thought he’d be an All-Star after seeing him play for my hometown Tulsa Drillers, then he started off huge with St. Louis. Guess he stopped taking steroids after 2000. I also own a game-worn Anthony Lerew Braves jersey because I wanted a Braves jersey and it was cheaper than even the replicas. Even if no one knows who he is, he dresses well.

Agreed. I think it’s kind of stupid that they’re doing all of these changes just because of OSU’s success, but I’m just happy they kept the name. That’s the main thing. But yeah, really curious about the logo, color scheme, etc. Hopefully they got rid of the pinstripes. And if they really are changing the colors, maybe something like dark green and dark blue…

One of the great features of curling sweaters - if you win a canadian provincial championship, and go to the national Brier, you get a “purple heart” patch that you wear on your sweater or jacket forever. I’ve never come close but I’ve curled against a lot of guys with purple hearts and its an amazing badge of honour - like being in “The Show”
Amazingly, when I googled curling sweaters to find an example of the purple heart I found an old edition of uniwatch!
The two middle guys have each been to the Brier twice.

Also, on a side note, in this past year I have done a decent amount of traveling for work and vacation (Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Italy)…one thing I’ve noticed is that there are Yankees hats/gear EVERYWHERE! Granted, I know most of the people are wearing it more for the “NY” than the team, but still. They need to realize that they’re supposed to hate them, not like them. But, it’s better than seeing SF Giants hats everywhere. I couldn’t take that and would have to say something…

Here’s details on the Portland Beavers announcement, in case any UW’ers can get there … sent to me in an email last night …
The Portland Beavers cordially invite you to attend…
THE OFFICIAL UNVEILING OF THE NEW TEAM LOGO & UNIFORMS
Pioneer Place Shopping Center
700 SW Fifth Ave
Tuesday, January 29, at 11:30 a.m.
(Lower level next to Food Court, between Gymboree & Claire’s)
The new logo and uniforms celebrate the history and tradition of the Portland Beavers, Portland’s team since 1903. The “new” look is a return to the roots of our National Pastime, infusing the community-based symbolism of the game. Baseball brings people together, and we want PGE Park to be Portland’s town square. We hope to see you on Tuesday to be part of this groundbreaking event.
RSVP:
Please RSVP to Patti Peters at (503) 553-5506 or ppeters@pgepark.com. Thanks for your support.
P.S.
New merchandise will be available at the mall directly following the unveiling. Plus, the PGE Park Team Store will also be open for the remainder of that week with the new merchandise, plus vintage items up to 50% off. The store will be open from Wednesday, January 30 to Friday, February 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Of course i never would have noticed this if I wasn’t a UW’er. I’ve seen it in videos too, they’ll blur out swooshes and 3 stripes. I can’t see the companies getting mad, isn’t that free advertising? Classy and classic… damn you Reebok!
It’s hard enough to tell who the players are. Taking away ANY way to seperate the players just makes it that much more enjoyable. At least the goalies still wear their own gear (I think, didn’t watch like 99.99% of the world)… for now.

Paul,
Didn’t know if you had seen anything new about the unis for the AAFL? I found a video of the AAFL draft here (Sorry, I couldn’t get the link to post correctly - http://event.playons...). There are some helmets that on set at different times in the broadcast. Tennessee’s jersey is at the 1:32:40 mark and the helmet at 1:33:36. Texas is at 1:37:15 (yuck!). Florida at 1:41:51 (probably the best looking jersey). Michigan at 1:44:04 (very arena league). Alabama at 1:47:08. I live in the state of Alabama and am an Auburn grad, so this one is a little personal. I kind of expected the red & white, but this jersey is high school ugly. Can I at least get a sleeve stripe? Are they using Rutgers’ practice jerseys ???
Arkansas’ jersey isn’t held up by their pick, but you can see it and their helmet in this gallery. Also, more pics of Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas. I’m not sure why Alabama’s page hasn’t been updated with draft pics. Maybe they realized that their jerseys needed some work.

I think the red-white-blue watch was meant to be intended for logos based on the tricolour/silhouette idea, not just those colours in general. Think Baseball, think basketball(think Baseketball!) - and those two are the only acceptable ones to me. The rest just convey a sense of tedium and lack of imagination. At least do something interesting, like the old Football League “Union Swastika” design, or the Formula One Negative Space Flag effort.

As soon as I heard “County Stadium visitors’ clubhouse,” I thought back to the book “Jocks and Socks.” It was written by the visitors’ clubhouse manager for the Brewers. Turns out this incident was during his time, as he’s mentioned in the article (though they spelled his name with a C instead of a K.) I don’t remember him mentioning this incident in the book, but it was a long time ago when I read it.

I do own two replica jerseys with “Miller” on the back, but I wait until the team gets a player with the last name of Miller to get the jersey, and get that guys number. So I own a #34 Trever Miller Blue Jays jersey and a #58 Caleb Miller Bengals jersey. I have a blank Devils jersey, since the Devils haven’t had anyone named Miller on their team.

I know they don’t play sports, but I’ve noticed painters around town sporting a logo based on the NBA’s & MLA’s. It’s half red and half blue with a white paint brush in the middle. I saw a lot of them last summer. I’m sure you can find the image somewhere. It’s not terribly impressive.

Odd.
There’s really little tragedy in Curling…let’s face some undeniable facts here…it’s professional cleaning and sweeping after all…

The Ohio State uniform is interesting. Grey must be a growing trend in college basketball. UConn wore gray last night too. I saw the game on ESPN. They were nice but it’s too much like a road baseball uniform for me. There’s no rule against wearing gray at home, I know, but I guess I just associate it with road teams because of baseball.

Yes, they did (although I never liked the pinstripes). The ‘problem’ is that the new owner feels they are too similar (name and color) to the Oregon State Beavers. When someone mentions Portland Beavers, he doesn’t want them to get confused with OSU (orange and black vs red and black). For awhile there they were talking about changing the name. Which would have been crazy, since the “Portland Beavers” is one of the oldest sports names in the whole country. So, at least they’re keeping the name. I can kind of deal with a change in the colors (please dont be purple, please dont be purple, please dont be purple) but wish it wasnt happening either. Half hour to go…

I was once a fairly competitive curler up here in Southern Ontario, and I’m extremely giddy that the dominant sport of my teenage years is getting a mention. I actually own a sweater that was knitted for me, though I didn’t wear it much since a warm up suit jacket with slacks is the standard curling wear of the last 20 or so years. When we got our first team coats, for bantam playdowns it was an exciting moment let me tell you. One disadvantage to wearing a wool sweater is overheating because rinks aren’t as cold as they used to be and sweeping is intense if you do it right.
In addition to the purple hearts for the brier, winning a zone, region or province comes with it’s own patch, so I was lucky enough to have one for winning the bantam playdowns in my zone. Some people have a bunch of patches on their sleeves and it’s a serious mark of pride. Here are photos of both my sweater and the patch. I’ve lost some weight since high school so the sweater is pretty big. I curled against several adults and seniors who still wore their old sweater, if you pair that with the old banners and trophies present in my club, including a very old brier winner’s banner, it’s nostalgia city there. If anyone is interested in more info I have several old curling books with great pictures and can be reached at bananacompany @ gmail.com.

summer of 06 i was introduced to this game in ohio where its huge. i too, made fun of it based on the name. when i describe it i say it is a cross between been bags, quoits and horseshoes.
bean bags based on the bag you toss and the hole by which part of the scoring is done.
quoits based on the angle of the board and that you can score by landing them on the board.
horseshoes based on the length of the toss.
it is a totally addicting game that is great for picnics and tailgates.
in fact, that summer i was at a really nice bar/night club in akron next to where the aeros play and they had more people playing cornhole than pool.

I’m concerned that Jerry Jones, et.al., are going to try to make the NFL Network the defacto network and eliminate CBS, FOX, ESPN, and NBC. With the players salaries increasing at such a fast pace the NFL is going to have to get money from somewhere and they may try pay-per-view. I think the NFL Network is the next step in that direction. That’s why I would prefer that the NFL Network just go away. I can’t say anything about the quality because … well … like most folks, I don’t get the NFL Network.

Shoot, I was expecting a Beavis and Butthead “Cornholio” reference.
#168 by KT on 01.29.08 4:59 pm |
I would think that’s unlikely.
The NFL foregoes a rights fee for its Thursday/Saturday night package, so it’s leaving money on the table from its current partners (or a potential new one) to get what it hopes will be additional revenue from cable subscribers.
But the league was largely built (at least in the Rozelle Era) on the notion that if fans could see their teams on readily-available TV, that was a good thing that would grow the league.
Al Davis had dreams of pay-per-view in his eyes when moving to LA. Many have talked about it. Supposedly the Super Bowl was going to be on Pay Per View, NFL games were going to go to Pay TV, they’ve been saying that forever. The free market, I don’t think, is going to go there and Goodell knows it.
That said, they’re trying to build a network, and you can’t do that by just showing the combine and NFL Films Presents. You gotta have some games.
I think they lost some leverage when they caved on the Pats/Giants game, so I think the notion that the NFL Network will replace CBS/FOX/NBC anytime soon as carriers of a lot of NFL games is a weaker one now than it was a month ago.

Without the expense of producing the games.

Is it that hard for people to realize that Dish TV is the way to go? When I tell people I have NFL Net. and Big Ten Net, they think I must be paying so much per month when I am actually paying less.
How is it in other people’s areas of the country? Is it that much more to switch to DirecTV or Dish Network?

Why would you have to throw it away?
Usually the teams wear the jerseys they’re going to wear in the game at media day. I can’t remember a time when they didn’t, at least not in the last several years.
It was also mentioned upthread that the Giants would be wearing white.
Finally, since they alternate every year and since Green Bay was the home team and wore green in #1, I believe it’s NFC team home in odd numbered games, AFC team home in even numbered games. Home team has choice of colors. They usually choose their dark or colored jersey.

Gotta go Caddyshack. I have seen it close to 50 times, but every time I watch it, I still crack up.
The most underrated golf movie of all time?? “Dead Solid Perfect”. I highly recommend it.

The Oakland Seals. This is near fuckin’ perfection…

Anybody notice these posted yesterday?
New Twins uni’s for 2010?
I’m on the fence with these.
…yeah, there’s a 98% chance those are fake. It’s just too crappy of a mock-up to be real. Plus new uni designs (unfotunitely) are never shown with stirrups
This has Chris Creamer wannabee designer written all over it…Ugly, boring and without style…a Creamer Classic.

I looked all over for this but couldn’t find it anywhere. Tomorrow, the new US Men’s Soccer uniforms will be released.

I also like that they kept the logo and uniform traditional and I especially like the alt Sunday hat. Doesn’t hurt that the Beaver is batting left-handed. There are not many left-handed logo mascots around.

Sorry if this is random but does anyone know of a website that offers professional grade Name and Number printing on a jersey that you currently own (specifically a new york mets authentic jersey, I want to get Wright put on it for my lil brothers birthday)
thank you

Wow.
A minor league identity designed by a professional design firm (Sandstrom Design). No wonder it looks porfessional instead of the generic overdrawn Disney crap of the Dan Simon’s or Plan B Branding of the world…what a relief…
No wonder it looks so good?..What happened? Their VP of Sophmoric Licensing got canned??? Thank goodness.
This is a good day. Brian, don’t call us, we’ll call you…
Awesome news for real designers… not illustrators…

The Tale of the Portland Beavers (MyFonts.com) identity.
I hope the Beavers did not pay the big branding firm Sandstrom Design a lot for this jersey lettering? OMG.
http://pgepark.com/
MyFonts.com should take a percentage of the licensing fees from the Portland Beavers, and Sandstrom should alter their invoice for “hand lettering”…What a joke!

Stay to your provocative advertising Stevie Sandstrom…

So, is it cool or un-cool to wear a “replica” jersey with your own name on the back?
Since there’ve been very few answers today, I’ll put in a late “Whatever works for you.” If you feel silly wearing somebody else’s name, wear your own.

Did anyone notice that T.O.’s polo shirt seemed to have the KFC logo on it when he was on ESPN today? He is wearing the same one I think in this interview but it doesn’t show it.

In regards to the OSU basketball shorts, I’ve always wondered how long it will take Nike, Adidas, Champs, Reebok, etc to introduce shorts the mimic College and Pro Football teams for the general public. Flag football and college intramural teams will scoop them up by the handfuls. Fans in general will want them to be able to wear them with their jerseys. Instead, NFL shop simply sells mesh ‘gym’ shorts with the ‘NFL Equipment’ logo and the team logo on them. They really seem to be missing out on an obvious product opportunity.
