Monday Morning Uni Watch

The NHL All-Star Game was last night, but I found the uniforms to be unremarkable at best (and besides, I was busy participating in Soup Night for most of the game). Fortunately, reader Chuck Miller has a report on another all-star game that recently took place — one that featured many more interesting uni-related moments that the NHL game did. Here’s the scoop:

The Continental Basketball Association held its annual All-Star Game last Tuesday. The players wore their regular team uniforms, like in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, so there was a wide variety of designs on display. For star-spangled style, the Butte Daredevils pay homage to Butte native Evel Knievel by wearing jerseys inspired by Knievel’s leather jumpsuits. The Minot Skyrockets’ road jerseys may be hard to read from the front, but there’s no problem identifying the player from the back. The Albany Patroons’ road jerseys are also hard to read, as the jersey front looks more like abstract art than a team name.

Due to some last-minute player replacements, some all-stars didn’t arrive with their proper uniforms. Zach Marbury of the Atlanta Krunk was forced to wear an All-Star Game T-shirt and practice shorts. Despite the Oklahoma Cavalry playing as members of the “home” team and wearing their white jerseys, Oklahoma’s Marvin Phillips brought his blue road Cavalry gear, which could have caused confusion on the court.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Xplosion, who wear white at home and black on the road, chose to wear their yellow alternates (and yes, all three jerseys have the words “PITTSBURGH XPLOSION” as contrasting side seams). However, the National Conference squad was designated as the home team, which meant that the Yakama Sun Kings (four of whose players were in the game) wore their home yellow jerseys, meaning that you had, for a time, yellow defending against yellow.

Several players found unique ways to accentuate their sweatbands. Nat Burton of the Albany Patroons chose to wear the official All-Star Game logo pin on his headband, while Atlanta’s Zach Marbury wore armband with a Sharpie-inscribed tribute to his father, who passed away earlier in the season.

Native American influence was felt throughout the game. When the Butte Daredevils’ Odell Bradley was named the game’s MVP, he was given a special jacket, with artwork inspired by Native American culture.

Big thanks to Chuck for what I’m fairly certain is the longest report ever written about a CBA game.

They’re throwbacks to the warmups worn during the era of legendary coach Ray Mears, who passed away last June. One down note: These are worn during pre-game only — when the team returns for introductions, they’re back in the standard Adidas shooting shirts and warmups, as the contract requires.” … Hawaii is angling for a new apparel contract. … Randy Miller reports that USF has switched to Under Armour and will apparently be wearing this jersey next season. He alertly snapped some nice screen grabs, as seen here, here, and here. … Jeff Barak attended the annual Twins Fest over the weekend. “They had a wonderful historical display of Twins jerseys,” he reports. “They were in two rows, going chronologically left to right across the top [as seen in sequence here, here, here, and here]. The top row started with the earliest 1961-71 style, followed by the 1972-73 button-down, 1974-86 pullovers, and 1987-present styles. Then they had the red alternates, blue alts, vest alts, St. Patrick’s spring training, Senators throwback, a St. Paul Negro League throwback, and 1970s and 1960s throwbacks. The bottom row had the fabulous turn ahead the clock [here’s the back view], a Jackie Robinson reproduction (for some unknown reason), a pair of batting practice jerseys, a No. 71 worn by Joe Mauer when he first signed, a No. 20 worn in the movie Little Big League, a pair of jackets (one of which was a six-foot-long bullpen jacket for cold weather), another more modern pair of jackets, and a sampling of jerseys with commemorative patches.” … Great blog post by Kenn Tomasch about his visit to the NFL Experience exhibit in Phoenix. … A UNC hoops museum is set to open today (with thanks to Tom Arnel).

I saw an entire indoor field hockey team with the Susan G. Komen theme (pink socks, etc.). Turns out the teenage daughter of the coach died six months ago of breast cancer. Way too soon.

Send it to river city sports, they do a great job!

Sad seeing how many of those Twins jerseys are on cheap wire hangars.

Interesting article about the presidential campaign bumper stickers, but I think that Obama’s rising sun logo was separated at birth with the logo from our local city of Chandler, Arizona.

The Senior Bowl is North vs. South, not east vs. west.

In regards to the article mentioning that Hawaii might be looking for a new apparel deal, I would be upset to see them land a new dealer and go away from the uniform detailing that Nike has developed for them. I love the helmets and striping on the pants. I feel that Hawaii’s uniforms are the most unique in college football. They do an excellent job of representing the school, people and geographic area of Hawaii IMHO.

Randy Miller reports that USF has switched to Under Armour and will apparently be wearing this jersey next season. Interesting to see that the design includes a football version of the NikeWorld collarbone horns we’re used to seeing in college basketball.

I wouldn’t go ahead lumping that design feature as a Nike exclusive one. UA has been using that as a design element since it debuted it’s football line with the MD jerseys. It has also been seen in generic UA ads and on the red jerseys from Gridiron Gang….which were basically the MD jerseys. It is also present, although not as large, it their South Carolina jerseys.

I could use a little help.

Over the weekend I bought a game used Pirate vest, but it did not come with the undershirt, which I suppose is good. Does anybody know where I can the actual undershirt that they wear? Here is a picture

Thanks.

Get me email from Paul…I can help you out too.

As a Vanderbilt graduate, I applaud UT for continuing their tradition of ugly uniform attire.

Stripes on the warmups, a la Indiana, is a nice idea.

However stripes in the shade of “road crew” orange are just plain awful. Ouch. It hurts my eyes to look!

However, as a Cincinnati Bengals fan who likes the Bengals’ threads, I find myself throwing stones from a glass house.

LSU wears yellow helmets with their own white jerseys, so why did the LSU players in the Senior Bowl bother to claim that they wore white helmets to match the South’s white jerseys? They should have said that they wore the white helmets because it was cool or different or whatever, instead of making up some bogus reason.

So, I got one of those Herrington catalogs in the mail, paged through it, and noticed this. OK, not so bad looking, but the advert was playing up the Rugby World Cup connection.

Looking at the shirts, I thought - hey, isn’t the New Zealand logo supposed to be this, and not the flag?

So, I go to an official Rugby World Cup site, and find that of course, there’s nothing even remotely similar to the game jerseys or other officially licensed merchandise being offered.

Boo.

my UA jersey post has been eaten!

Is it just me, or does the McCain bumper sticker remind you of this Canadian frozen food company?

I also attended TwinsFest over the weekend. It was good to see some pics of those old Twins jerseys. However, they also had a traveling display of various old jerseys and artifacts from the HOF. One of the items was an early 20th century jersey (I forget which player) that had what appeared to be button holes on the cuffs of both sleeves. Anyone seen that before? My only guess is they were a means of attaching long sleeves to the short-sleeved jersey (the sleeve extensions would have had buttons that attached to the holes on the ends of the permanent sleeves. Does anyone know if that is accurate?

I just checked my DVR, and How It’s Made has a few sports-themed episodes coming up.

don’t kill me! i am a HUGE hockey fan. i am both a fan of my home team (which i won’t mention, because of the question i’m about to ask), AND the game itself… with that said *about to punch myself*… i ask this question:

A positive note about one of Uniwatches’ sponsors: As a lifelong Giants’ fan living in Georgia, I ‘had to have’ a road Eli jersey for Sunday. Ordering from them was a great experience for me. Web site was well designed, clear and efficient. Price was least expensive I found the jersey was at my door in two days. Total quality.

Uniwatch readers: Let’s support the site by giving business to a very fine sponsor. Buy alot and buy often folks. And GO GIANTS! Defeat the evil empire.

I could use a little help.

Over the weekend I bought a game used Pirate vest, but it did not come with the undershirt, which I suppose is good. Does anybody know where I can the actual undershirt that they wear? Here is a picture

Thanks.

nice jersey! they used to sell those undershirts here at the pirates clubhouse store @ pnc park. i could run over there this week and look if you dont find one soon. i’ll keep an eye out in the posts. i have to tell you though, they are kind of “cheeply” made. if that is even a word. you can see the pirate decal on the shoulder peeling off the players arms towards the end of the season (sorry, no pics). let us know either way, like i said, i’ll keep an eye out!

The NFC Pro-Bowl jersey is Larry Fitzgerald (#11) not Anquan Boldin (#81).

With respect to the jersey, I got it at Pirate fest, it has the All star game patch and the Bob O’Connor memorial patch on it. It’s a real doozy, and it was so cheap ($100). I also got a 2005 alternate (the black one) for $35.

As for the undershirt, I never thought it would be that hard to find, but I have had no luck. I looked on their website (of course) but they either don’t have it, or don’t label it correctly.

The good news a lot of the players don’t bother to wear it anyway. They always seem to wear just a 3/4 sleave black t-shirt, which is weird in its own right.

Is it just me, or does the McCain bumper sticker remind you of this Canadian frozen food company?

It’s just you. The only thing those have in common is the word McCain. Besides that, they are completely different.

Despite the overwhelmingly boring All-Star jerseys yesterday in the NHL, a great finish to the game.

Tonight, the AHL All-Star game is on, and can be seen live via broadband on the AHL website.

Unfortunately, the AHL’s All-Star jerseys induce more yawning.

Actually, Hawaii’s design predated their Nike affiliation, which has been in effect for only a few years; Reebok was their manufacturer when they changed the unis in 2000. But it would be sad to see Hawaii leave Nike–they had some really good Nike stuff at the Rainbowtique.

I also gotta agree with Mr. Redemske–why her?

Deeds like that are what make UW great as does the request to help out our sponsors! Nice Job, people.

Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: According to this Chicago Tribune blog entry, the White Sox will be wearing camouflage jerseys on the 4th of July, which I think is really overdoing it. Independence Day is about a lot of patriotic things, not just militarism.

What’s wrong about the White Sox using our Independence Day to pay tribute to the armed forces, especially when many of those troops are engaging in armed combat in Iraq? Or is that the point — it’s only OK to have a tribute to the military when they’re not actually doing anything involving fighting?

My reaction may seem harsh, but to say that the White Sox are “overdoing it” for paying tribute to the military on a national holiday is asinine. And this is coming from a blue-blooded Cubs fan.

The San Diego Padres had their fan fest, dubbed Friar Fest, over the weekend too. I went down to Petco Park on Saturday. They always have a yard sale where they sell game used jerseys, pants, equipment, banners, etc. They used to sell the jerseys for only $35, but this year they bumped the price up to $75. The jerseys usually belong to the lesser players. There would be no chance of finding guys like Hoffman, Gwynn, Sheffield, McGriff, etc.

I picked up a 2007 Jack Cust road jersey, and a 1988 Keith Moreland road jersey. Front and back of the jerseys.

The only way that Cust jersey is game worn is if the Padres wore their official roads during Spring Training for a game. Cust was traded to the A’s before he could play a game for the Padres in 2007. It’s not a 2006 jersey because Cust wore #9 during his callup, and Josh Barfield had #29 that season.

Keith Moreland’s jersey is interesting because in the same pile was a Moreland #7 jersey. He only played one season with the Padres, 1988. At some point in that year, they unofficially retired Steve Garvey’s number #6, at which point Moreland had to switch to #7. I was about to grab a Marvell Wynne jersey instead, as he was the only name in the pile that I could remember from my childhood on those late ’80s teams, but it didn’t have any buttons.

The pants that were on sale were from all the Padres throwback games from 2006 and 2007. I was very tempted to get some of the mustard yellow pants.

The last item I grabbed was this beautifully framed picture of Eddie Williams playing first base for the Padres. He went to my church while he was a Padre in the mid ’90s, so this had special significance. Overall the frame is about 30″x24″ and only cost $50.

Don’t miss Friar Fest next year if you’re close to San Diego. There are some great deals to be had!

Speaking of Hawaii, Is June Jones insane?

If anyone knows if the Fan Fests are still going in their hometowns, I’d like to pick up a baseball jersey.

Just as a size question for me: Do they still make Cecil Fielder and John Kruk-sized jerseys? I thought most ball players were somewhat fit now. ;o)

The simple truth is this: Ms. Belbin’s figure skating prowess aside, she is not nor will ever be, a member of this esteemed organization.

Does anyone know if the Mets or the Yankess have days like this? Paul, LI Phil, Todd K, anyone?

While I obviously cannot condone the A’s new black alternates, this particular iteration of it looks a hell of a lot better than the one they had a few years ago that was black with green embroidery. Those were borderline illegible and patently ugly.

At least the main color of the embroidery on this new one is white so as to actually contrast with the jersey color.

I was trying to help Jesse in locating a Pirates Undershirt and came up with this site. It doesn’t help Jesse a lick but it has some nice history of the Pirates uni’s.

Speaking of Hawaii, Is June Jones insane?

Yes … absolutely … no question. (And those answers are just from my wife.)

My answer … he is looney tunes!! I don’t care what kind of challenges he was having. I am sure that he could have forced a change at the AD level and still stayed at Hawaii.

Now you’re just making excuses for them. They both suck and should be burned. Why should we settle for “at least they weren’t as ugly as the last ones“? (sorry, Teebz)

Anyone else hear about this All American Football League, which will play during the Spring and Summer to fill the void left by NFL Europe? They are really playing up the college angle, basing teams in Alabama, Florida, Texas, Michigan and Arkansas. The teams colors are closely mirroring their college counterparts.

Ah, the daily gratuitous USC Thong, er, Song Girls link…You know, we link to cheerleaders so often, and talk about the likes of Sharapova and Ivanovic so much, it’s refreshing to have a change of pace (like Tanith Belbin) in the women we guys like to visually ogle.

I’m not making excuses. Believe me, I am not accepting of anyone wearing wearing black unless it’s actually a legitimate part of their color scheme, and I don’t condone any baseball team wearing a black jersey regardless of their team colors.

All I’m saying is, if they’re going to have ugly jerseys, at least this time around you can read them.

Though the new ones basically look like the Pirates should be wearing them, so the A’s really have no reason to wear them at all.

Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: According to this Chicago Tribune blog entry, the White Sox will be wearing camouflage jerseys on the 4th of July, which I think is really overdoing it. Independence Day is about a lot of patriotic things, not just militarism.

Wearing camouflaged jerseys on the Fourth of July does nothing to support the armed forces. Just like singing God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch does nothing to prevent terrorism. In fact, these banal, useless gestures really underscore how little average people, myself included, do with respect to these issues. It’s all symbolism to make the fans at the ball park on the 4th of July feel better about doing nothing to support the war effort in this country.

Want to help? Write your congressman and ask him to increase funds for the soldiers, and to apply them in a way that will help rather than padding the profits of corporate interests. Or support the campaigns of candidates who will the troops home. Which ever side of the debate you’re on and I don’t want to debate staying versus going in Iraq, there are things you can actually do to help.

But shit, can’t I just watch a god damn ball game without having corporate financed “patriotism” shoved down my throat?

Does anyone know if the Mets or the Yankess have days like this? Paul, LI Phil, Todd K, anyone?

the mets fan fest isn’t the same thing, per se…

although you can always pick up overpriced stuff there

i’ve heard it suggested that they do a once-yearly event at the javits or some such, but to my knowledge, no such event exists

better off eBaying or attending the myriad card-show type events held at local hotels and convention centers

They may be more fit, but their jerseys don’t fit. A Manny Ramirez jersey would probably work just fine for you.

for some reason, I’ve tried to post a link to the A’s older style of black alts with the illegible green text but the posts do not post.

Tape, this has nothing to do with your post, rather the link attached to your screenname. You have some GREAT ballpark pics. My favorites were those taken at Eldredge Field, home of the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
I grew up watching Cardinals games sitting on the Route 28 guardrail behind the Card’s dugout with my dad. Some of my fondest memories were talking to a lanky, young shortstop from Georgia Tech while he was on deck, who in his three years with the team became a huge fan favorite. It was a treat to watch him get drafted by the BoSox and become the great and beloved player that Nomar was.
One of the greatest joys of my life was being able to bring my wife and two daughters to their first Cardinals game this past Summer.
Thanks for the flood of memories, Tape!

anyone have an explanation as to why I can’t post a link, be it an actual href link or just pasting the URL without making a link?

I’ve tried 4 times now and it’s not working. my other posts without links have worked just fine.

wtf.

Last month at my daughter’s junior high basketball game, my wife got some photos of a unique team name on the Lexington (NE) Junior High jerseys:

Pretty Maids all in a row

Another shot

Lex High calls it’s boys teams the Minutemen (a revolutionary war allusion, of course). The girls go my Minutemaids, but the JH team has shortened that.

I’m sorry, Phil, didn’t realize you had already posted links with pics of the new AAFL jerseys. Oh, wait . . .

Not sure if this popped up anywhere over the weekend, but there is an interesting article here about the creation and use of the Biohazard symbol. (unfortunately no mention of the metal band)

Yes, I AM THE MINORITY. ;o)

im sorry…i didn’t mean to appear to be ripping on you…it’s just that saturday and sunday (to a lesser extent) there was a rather spirited discussion on the new aafl (mostly by readers other than myself, although i did post once or twice on it)…

if you do have the time, it might be worth a read thru…

cheers!

If anyone knows if the Fan Fests are still going in their hometowns, I’d like to pick up a baseball jersey.

Just as a size question for me: Do they still make Cecil Fielder and John Kruk-sized jerseys? I thought most ball players were somewhat fit now. ;o)

They may be more fit, but their jerseys don’t fit. A Manny Ramirez jersey would probably work just fine for you.

Ahhh… good call, Stuby.

Does anyone know if these Fan Fests are continuing? Living at least 8 hours from a MLB team, I never seem to get to these things.

The NHL All Star Game was on last night? Who knew?

Not I.

In fact sadly, if I was not a member of this board, I probably would not even know the NHL still existed.

I say that not to take anything away from the NHL, but rather as a comment on the way the NHL has fallen completely off the average sports fan’s radar screen. I never see ads for the NHL and rarely hear scores.

I’m sorry, Phil, didn’t realize you had already posted links with pics of the new AAFL jerseys. Oh, wait . . .

He didn’t.

They were posted over the weekend, though.

We didn’t have a good one of the Texas jersey or the Arkansas helmet, though. Those are in there. Kind of uninspired.

Yeah, last summer I went on a stadium vacation for a week. I hit both NY parks, Philly, Baltimore and DC (plus a game or two a few subway stops away at Fenway).

I never saw Nomar play. I moved to Orleans in the fall of 1993, just after the summer he played for the Cardinals. I did live about a 2-minute walk away from Eldredge Park, just past the police station across the street, and for those las two summers in high school and the two summers where I still went home from college during the summer, I went to almost every game I could. The big name I remember was Todd Helton. I think Scott Proctor was on one of those teams. Most of the really awesome guys on the Cards were just before or after those few years though, like Nomar, Ben Sheets, Mark Teixeira…

I remember seeing a bunch of other names on visiting teams moreso however, like Lance Berkman, Barry Zito, Mark Mulder, Aaron Rowand, Mike Lowell, Eric Hinske, Pat Burrell, Eric Byrnes…

The week after we returned from the baseball trip, I took my girlfriend for her first trip to the Cape. She had never been despite having lived in Mass. all her life, which I found stunning. The keystones of the trip were going to the Kream ‘n Kone for some fried clams and, of course, a CArds game. I can’t think of a better way to spend a day than with those two things.

don’t kill me! i am a HUGE hockey fan. i am both a fan of my home team (which i won’t mention, because of the question i’m about to ask), AND the game itself… with that said *about to punch myself*… i ask this question:
is pink a pretty cool hockey color??? those pictures in the ticker weren’t all that bad… you can all hate me now.
I hate you with a passion, please hand in your hockey fan memebership now….

ha! i know, i hate me too for even typing that mess! but i don’t know, with the white ice and mostly white boards, and what-not. i’ll make it up to the hockey world somehow!!!

Does anyone know if the Mets or the Yankess have days like this? Paul, LI Phil, Todd K, anyone?

No, they don’t. I’m guessing Steiner Sports scoops up all of the jerseys and things that other teams would normally sell at a fan fest.

Then they can sell a NY Yankees PJ Pilittere #86 2007 Game Used Spring Training Home BP Jersey for the cheap price of $150.00. UNREAL!

It looks like, like so many, Lexington is emphasizing the black in their color scheme these days. When “Lex” was my school’s rival twenty-five years ago (go Dusters!), their uniforms were orange and white, with black trim. They looked a lot better that way.

I’m one of the few that did watch the NHL All-Star Game last night for a little bit. Very humorous moment at the start of the game. The announcers were talking to Rick DiPietro, who was the starting goalie for the east. As the puck dropped, and the first period started, they started asking him questions. Just as he’s in the middle of answering a question, the west steals the puck and shoots on him and scores, 12 seconds into the game, a new record. Too funny…….

Having spent the lions share of my summers in Wellfleet, I have many great memories from the Cape. The must-see landmarks are too many to mention, but some of my favorites are the BeachComber, the Bookstore, Square Dancing on Wednesday Nights at the pier, PJ’s Ice Cream, the Baseball Shop in Orleans, Shop Therapy in P-Town, P-Town in general, not for the feint of heart, etc, etc. One thing I will never forget is our first Saturday on the cape was always grocery day. we would go to Angelo’s in Orleans and my father and I would head straight to the Magazine aisle and pick up Street and Smith’s college football preview. We would buy one copy for each of us and I would have that book memorized by Monday. My father and I didn’t see eye to eye on many things, but college football was our saving grace. Unfortunately he’s now gone but it’s reminders like those that are worthwhile!

It’s also the reason why I am the rarest of anilmals, a Red Sox and Yankee fan. What would I do without either team? It’s easier to just admit that I’m a baseball fan in general!

So, I go to an official Rugby World Cup site, and find that of course, there’s nothing even remotely similar to the

game

jerseys or other officially licensed merchandise being offered.

Boo.

As a former employee of Mr. Herrington, I can tell you he makes shit up and assumes nobody notices (or cares) becuase HE is smarter and more worldly than everyone…

Does anyone know if the Mets or the Yankess have days like this? Paul, LI Phil, Todd K, anyone?

sorry i cant help you. all i know is that the phillies have what they call a caravan, in which a selection of players and coaches come to a city to promote the team. only reason i know is because they were just here in the lehigh valley for a cross promotion with the iron pigs.

oh, and im still trying to get over the fact that marvell wynne made the blog…
i love obscure 80’s and 90’s players. we created a drinking game out of it in college.

This is the best drinking game I’ve ever heard of. I’ve never played, but a buddy of mine who went to Michigan State told me about it. Sounds like one could seriously ‘faced playing it.
