Your clear visor is fine, sure. If you get knocked out, the doctors will be able to check your pupils to make the dead or alive call — and that’s important. Being dead probably sucks. You see, Antonio Pierce, it’s a safety call. Roger Goodell is just trying to save you from yourself.
That tinted visor, while awesome and no doubt beneficial during indoor practices, could lead to your early demise if worn in the Super Bowl. And there’s simply not enough time to organize the proper white-number-on-a-black-circle helmet/jersey tributes, add two or three extra guys to the Pro Bowl so they can wear your number, hold a candlelight vigil in front of the Oakley factory, or post a really stirring video tribute on YouTube. Plus you’ll have to wait, like, seven months for your moment of silence, and by then the one for Sean Taylor will just be getting done, and everybody will be tired of moments of silence.

A Pharoah’s player pays his own kind of tribute. The North African teams and Sudan sometimes do a little something at continental events to “prove” their difference. I’m not suggesting there aren’t people in Gaza who are unjustly put upon, just that at CAN he could have easily chosen to sympathize with the suffering of Kenyans, Darfuri, or Eastern Congolese. Maybe all memorials are just destined to irritate some people.

Bringing this back to somehting that is Uni-related…
I was at ther Bowling Green – Notre Dame hockey game last night and noticed that BG has three orange dashed lines on their brown helmet. I was surprised because it doesn’t relate to their football helmets ( a la Michigan and Notre Dame) and I have not seen dashed lines on any helmet before. I am still looking for some pictures.

A minor detail, but the Visor looks to be an Nike version, because it lacked the “bubble” curvature of the Oakley visors, and the top tabs are taller and not rounded but angled.

Florida’s looks like the only one that isn’t simple (Texas looks like it has some dimples or something on it) – the UF throwback/UCLA/Colts stripes around the shoulders are at least different.
I’m also not a big fan of team names on fronts of football jerseys – the jersey should be iconic enough that you know who’s wearing it. I hate that wordmark crap from the NFL, too.
Anyway, at least at Florida, they’ve got ONE game scheduled before students are done for the semester and that one is right before finals. Good luck with that.
I just think they’re spending ridiculous amounts of money (not on jersey design – but the published reports of the rent they’re paying the universities) and without a lucrative TV contract, there’s no way they can make it up through traditional streams of revenue.

Hey guys. I’ll try to help.
That star-styled All-Star jersey was first used for the 1994 NHL All-Star Game in NYC where Mike Richter won the MVP award (someone had a picture of it above). There was no All-Star Game in 1995 due to the strike. It was again seen in 1996 in Boston where Ray Bourque won the MVP (pictures above). They were worn again in 1997 when San Jose hosted the All-Star Game.
Dallas, however, decided that they were gonna steal a page out the NHL’s uniform book, and introduced the star-styled jersey as their alternate in 1997-98 when the NHL decided to swap the All-Star format to a North America-World format ifor the Vancouver All-Star Game. Being that they were the Dallas Stars, it was sort of fitting, despite them looking like green-and-black All-Stars.
Tom Hicks, owner of the Stars, had wanted to move away from the Minnesota look since the NHL had expressed interest in returning an expansion team there, and chose the All-Star jersey design as the Stars’ new look. Ironically, the Stars won the Stanley Cup the following year in 1998-99. They wore their alternate jerseys so often that year that the star-style jersey was incorporated into a green-and-white home jersey for the 1999-00 season, and the other plainer Stars jerseys were retired for good.
Hope that explains it, Bryan. The Stars basically recycled a design the NHL had no intention of ever using again. :o)

And it does kinda make it more of a “uniform” in that its something identical on every jersey, unlike numbers, names, and even sleeve stripes (which commonly go missing on NFL uniforms).

Djokovic as a 12 year old practiced in an empty swimming pool (in between air raid sirens)prior to going to an academy out of the country – hence the picture of him playing tennis in the pool.

I’m not disagreeing with any of the posts so far that feel team tributes and memorials are often over the top and especially so in the case of Sean Taylor. But before I’d read any of the posts, either for or against Bryan’s choice of words and content in the opener, I did find it leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It’s irrelavent when someone died. To continually refer to them specifically whilst writing on a wholly unrelated topic, just smacks of insensitivity. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of people reminding me that this website exists for discussion of uniforms. However there are plenty of other ways to introduce the topic in a more relevant way. Yes the visor rules exists in case of death, and yes Sean Taylor is a football player who died, but the two are unrelated and ought to have remained so.
This website should be light hearted and I almost thought better of posting at all today, but my gut reaction was that the opener was neither appropriate nor in good taste.

I was at the Georgetown-WVU game last night, there were a handful of things I noticed.
1. Alex Ruoff wearing all black shoes and black socks.

D-Mac took the glove off and tucked it in his belt when he over the quarterbacking duties in the Wild Hog formation. He threw alot out of that formation and needed to be ‘gloveless’.

Sort of uni-related, in a “cheering for the laundry” kinda way. I’m aiming this at Paul and anyone else in the NYC area. Growing up in Michigan, I only got to root for one team in each of the 4 major sports. However, I have a feeling the cheering section in NYC goes along these lines: Yankees/Rangers/Giants/Knicks or Mets/Islanders/Jets/Nets. How about it? Can a Yankees fan also be an Isles fan? Giants fan be a Mets fan?

The Brooklyn Dodgers football team lasted from 1946-48, so it wasn’t like there was a long time problem there. Once we got to 1947, the baseball Dodgers kind of took over the news there.

In short – the confusion was in New York with the Giants and in St.Louis with the Cardinals. The confusion was taken care of with “Football” and “Baseball” put between the cities and the team nicknames.

But it persists only because sportscasters now are all about being clever. Back in the 50s, with scattered exceptions, they were about actually informing you without everything being an audition for the frigging Chuckle Hut.

As for Sean Taylor, I’d be very, very VERY surprised if any of us (yes, even those of us who took a class with him six years ago) really knows if he was a great guy, a jackass, a miscreant, had turned his life around, or what. Most of us feel obligated to put the disclaimer “I’m sure he was a fine fellow” in front of any comment, but the fact is – we have no idea. We hear this, we hear that. Who knows? As with most of us, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
The tragedy is that a child is fatherless, a woman is partnerless and family and friends have lost a loved one. Which is pretty much no different from the situation that occurs every several minutes in this country every day. We’ve just heard of this one because it’s been in the papers.
At the fringes of this discussion are the people who believe they know for certain he was turning his life around and was a wonderful guy whose death was a huge tragedy and the people at the other extreme who think he got what he had coming to him. But the majority of folks are probably, again, somewhere in the middle.
We don’t object in any way to family, friends, teammates, fans or anybody else memorializing a fallen comrade however they see fit on an individual basis. What I think most people seem to object to is the institutionalized, officially-sanctioned memorials that seem to run contrary to what has been officially sanctioned for other recently-deceased NFL players in terms of their duration.

Was browsing Ebay for some new hockey gear, and came across this photo of the 1925 Spengler Cup (Wiki it if you dont know what it is, its too late for me to go hunting lol). Appears to be “Oxford University IHC”, from Great Britain.
All I have to say is, other than the sweet Captains armband, those socks are utterly to die for! But um, dude, whats with the middle guy and the off colored pants?

Yankees/Giants/Islanders/ashamed of both bb teams (liked both in the 70s). But the only sport where it has always been wrong to root for both is hockey. The Yankee/Met thing became a harder line to cross sometime in the 1970s, and the same became true of the Giants/Jets. At one time Knicks/Nets was more an ABA/NBA thing.

Bryan, I generally love your writing. However, the ongoing bashing of those who wish to memorialize Sean Taylor’s death needs to stop. It is clear that Taylor touched the lives of many players, as the NFL has stepped out of the picture and let the players decide how long to wear the patch or wear his number in the Pro Bowl. I’m sorry those selfish players had to upset your perfect Uni Watching world to remember a father who died far too young for absolutely no good reason, but is the constant criticism of them really needed?

The PLAYERS decided to keep wearing patches. The PLAYERS decided if they wanted to wear #21 in the Pro Bowl. Stop acting like this is NIKE throwing a soosh on every helmet.
