About a week ago, I wrote a blog for my humble little alternative weekly in Cleveland about why no reasonable fan should care that LeBron’s new Nike kicks are inspired by the Bronx Bombers. Even after the flak Bron Bron caught for wearing a Yankees cap at Jacobs Progressive Field during the Indians’ divisional series against the Yankees, I didn’t think the new shoes, replete with pinstripes, would be such a big deal. At least, I didn’t think they should be.
Of course, as the days went by and news from the blogs reached those who write for our daily newspapers, and those who produce our local daily news shows, James’s new shoes became quite the story yesterday. Locally, the Plain Dealer dedicated almost a full page of the sports section to comments received about the footwear (check out the full list of the “eloquent” comments here). Nationally, the story got play on SportsCenter, and the boys at PTI debated whether LeBron has taken his love of all things pinstriped too far, ultimately declaring that the King should have reigned in that love a little bit. [Sounds like a slow news day to me. -- PL]
My take: Ideally, we’d all like our hometown athletes to be beacons of our city in all regards. So it would be great if LeBron was a rep for the Indians, Browns, Lake Erie Monsters, and even the new Cleveland Gladiators. Hell, he should be out pimping the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art too! Instead, LeBron parties with Jay-Z in Vegas, Tom Brady wears a Yankees hat, and Paul Pierce shows his support for the New York Giants.
Still, I think LeBron’s new shoe is nothing to get upset about. In fact, LeBron and Nike have made many shoes together. There’s an entire site dedicated to his shoes. And that’s where I found that Nike and LeBron have also made an OSU style shoe. As you can read here, that doesn’t mean James is heading off to OSU after this year to play for Thad Matta. It doesn’t mean he’s slighting his hometown Akron Zips in any way. In fact, Nike and LeBron made another shoe that has a map of Akron on the sole!
LeBron is at the point of his career where his role as a Nike-sponsored businessman is fast approaching or surpassing his role as basketball player. He’s made no secret of his desire to be a billionaire, and if he’s going to get there, Nike will play a big role in that, which means this is hardly the last set of sneakers they’ll collaborate on. Would I prefer that LeBron didn’t love the Yankees and instead made a shoe based on the Tribe? Sure. But the sad truth is that our athletes owe us nothing outside of the sports they play. I’m in no mood to watch the Cavs cross their fingers over some ping pong balls in the lottery, so I want LeBron here, no matter whose baseball cap or shoes he’s wearing.
Research Request: Paul here. Many, many people over the years have told me about the time the Patriots held a logo “election” during halftime of a game back around the late ’80s, when Pat Patriot was still the man. They supposedly had one guy dressed up as Pat, someone else dressed up as a proposed newfangled spokescharacter (not Flying Elvis), paraded them both around the field, and had the fans vote by applauding. Or maybe they had giant cardboard cutouts of the two logos, instead of live actors (I’ve heard the story told both ways). Either way, the new logo was booed off the field.
I’ve heard this story enough times to believe that it’s true. Only problem is that nobody has ever provided a photo of the losing logo. If anyone can provide any visuals on this, please get in touch. Thanks.
While we’re at it: Another prototype that I’ve often heard about but never seen is the new Chiefs helmet that a play-by-play man supposedly held up in front the camera during a game about 20 years ago. If you’ve got it, let’s see it!

Paul, from what I remember from the account I read in the Globe (the Will McDonough Sunday notes column that takes about an entire page), the logos were painted in the end zone.

I attended the Patriots/Bills game where the vote at halftime for a new logo took place. I don’t have any photos but I remember the logo that lost looked very similar to the “Flying Elvis” that they have now.

Majors Plan to “Paint the Rink Pink”
Mississauga, ON – It will be a special night on Wednesday, February 13 when the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors host the Guelph Storm at the Hershey Centre at 7 p.m. It will be on that occasion that the Majors will be holding their inaugural “Paint the Rink Pink” event.
The theme that evening will be breast cancer awareness and the colour pink will be resonating throughout the building. For that night only, the ice will be painted pink, which is a first in the history of the OHL. Also, the Majors will be wearing special, pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off on their web site (www.stmichaelsmajors.com) during the week following the event. And, the referees will be decked out in pink jerseys as well.
The Majors are pleased to announce that Don Cherry, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Ontario Hockey League Commissioner David Branch have already confirmed their attendance and will be performing the ceremonial puck drop that evening.
The best part is that this event will benefit a good cause as a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (www.cbcf.org). This includes $1 from each group ticket that night and $2 from each single ticket as well as in-arena donations.

The NFL will change it’s name to ‘21′ for a 21 year mourning period. All players will be numbered 21, NNOB (our of respect for Mr. Taylor, of course), all yardage markers will read ‘21′ instead of useful things like actual yardage.
I also think that Mr. Taylor should posthumously be named President and Inauguration Day should be moved to January 21.

Remember the hype machine which turned Lebron James into a phenomenon. I do, because I watched his every move with great anticipation. Would be go to Ohio State, would he jump to the NBA, would he try and play football, a game that he also excelled at as a wode receiver? All very interesting, but what had me on the edge of my seat was the earth shattering decision of which shoe giant he would sign with.
When he played at St. Vincent St. Mary’s High school both Adidas as well as Nike made special edition Player Exclusive shoes for he and his teammates, who were no slouches by any means.
As we all know, he decided upon the swoosh and became not only a soldier in Phil Knight’s army but the general who would lead them into this millenium.
As for the tribute to the Yankees with his current shoe, this is not a new occurrence. Check out last year’s New York edition of the Lebron IV
Nike has also made versions of each of his signature shoes for various high profile high schools and colleges around the country, such as Westchester and Fairfax in Cali, St. Raymonds, Christ the King, and Rice here in New York as well as the initial S.O.D. uniforms which THE Ohio State University team wore in the final four last year. Out of the goodness of their swooshed hearts, I think not. High profile amateur athletes become high profile professional endorsers in the public eyes of millions of fans and consumers, myself included.

Vince (welcome back, by the way), I agree with you that it doesn’t matter that Tom Brady wears a Yankees cap, or that LeBron James allows his name to be used on shoes for all sorts of sports teams (I wonder if any Yankee with have spikes mounted to a pair).
But it was a little much for him to show up during the playoffs and root against the home team, which shares it’s fan base with him and his team. Especially because he is basically a hometown guy (unlike Brady). I can understand why that grates on people. Sure he has a right to root for whoever he wants, but I can also understand why that was annoying.

While this particular colorway is indeed inspired by the Yankees, it’s never really mentioned that these are really only a limited edition release–one of dozens of colorways of the Lebron V that will come out this year. The shoes themselves are not Yankees-inspired at all (again, it’s just this colorway), so I really don’t see the big deal.
If his everyday shoes that he wore on the court for the Cavs had pinstripes on them, then I could see why people would get all wound up, but they’re also releasing Lebron V’s in his SVSM high school colors, a “China Edition”, and countless other special editions. People aren’t going to get all hyped up that he’s going to return to high school or move to China… it’s just a couple of colorways, nothing more.

Not sure why, but I simply cannot bring myself to type or utter the term “colorway.” Something about it just makes a little man inside my head say, “Nope, not gonna speak your language. Nuh-uh.” Anyone know how far back this term dates, and/or if it was introduced by any particular company? Why isn’t it used in non-footwear applications?

No one is disrespecting Sean Taylor or his grieving family and friends. What we’re ridiculing is how overblown the “mourning” gestures have been, especially in comparison to other active NFL players who have tragically died recently. Darrent Williams was also murdered, but it is only his team that honors his memory. It is the same thing with a New England offensive lineman (I can’t remember his name right now), who died and is memorialized by his team. When Pat Tillman died in Afghanistan, the NFL actively stopped people who wanted to continue uniform-based gestures in his memory. There needs to be a dignified policy when it comes to these tragic situations, and that policy needs to be applied consistently, so that it does not appear that any deceased player is worth more or less than Sean Taylor.

Point is, everyone deals with loss differently, and it smacks of hubris that this blog (or the people who read it) would consider themselves the arbiters of how (or how long) that process should be.
And yes, I’m a Skins fan, and Sean Taylor was my daughter’s favorite player. So everything I’ve said here is extremely biased.

re: the lebron shoe…
just remember lebron is FROM akron, he only works in cleveland.
i guess all media outlets, print, tv, radio and internet failed to completely research his collection as well.
nobody has reported that every year he puts out a SVSM (st. vincents/st. mary’s) shoe which is his alma mater IN akron. in most cases, its more than one shoe a year.

As for changing the jersey numbers in the pro-bowl, I think its taking it too far. There’s memorializing and then there’s just over-doing it. If anything, the memorial should be something smaller like maybe allowing the players to change one of their TV numbers to memorialize Sean Taylor one last time or wearing the “21″ patch from the Skins jerseys, but thats it.

Aside from that, I loved today’s article about the LeBron sneaker snafu. I disagree with Vince’s take, however. It sounds like Vince has adopted a “f*ck it” approach. While I can see the merit in accepting that fact that athletes won’t always rep their own city’s teams, I think there is another issue.
LeBron is a ridiculous Fairweather Johnson. He was quoted at that Indians game in which he wore the Yanks hat saying that he grew up liking the Yankees, Cowboys, and Bulls? Obviously everyone has the right to root for whoever they choose, but those three teams? In the 90s? There’s no fandom in that, that’s just rooting for who’s awesome. If I was from Cleveland, I’d be disgusted with LeBron after that.

First, I want to state that I have been a loyal reader of this blog since its creation and a loyal reader of uniwatch on espn.com for many years. That being said, this is the 3rd post I have ever written on this blog. The reason I state that is I just want to get across that I am not one of those who spend their day posting on this blog with irrelevant garbage just to kill time in their day. The only times that I have posted is when I felt I had something substantial to contribute. The reason I am posting today is because, quite frankly, I think the words by the author this blog and many of its readers is reprehensible. I find it both callous and demeaning how people have trivialized the death of two extremely young men just because they are celebrity. I think to say that “there needs to be a dignified policy when it comes to these tragic situations, and that policy needs to be applied consistently” is very incompassionate. What gives an individual or an association the right to tell others the proper way to cope with a tragic situation? Are their policies at schools and businesses regarding how long their members are allowed to remember a lost colleague. I think something that many people are forgetting is that it is not the NFL pushing these players to continue to mourn Sean Taylor. It is the players choosing to do so. Saying they should stop memorialize him is telling them they should stop mourning a lost colleague and friend. Maybe the fact that his mourning by fellow players has carried on this long speaks to the love they had for this man. Maybe he was not the gangster thug that many readers on this blog portray him to be. At times, I think the uniwatch community and its author act too righteously. Uniforms become such an obsession that it is forgotten that there are people underneath them and its only a game that they’re playing. Just because Manny Ramirez wears his pants the way he does, it does not make him less of man. Stripes on socks are not a reason to admire a player. The reason I say this is because I believe a lot of readers have decided what kind of man Sean Taylor was and what is the approriate way to remember him. To those people, I ask what gives you the right? I am also astounded that people could honestly state this is a “color issue”. I believe that is just flat out racism. Saying its a “color issue” is the equivalent of saying a black player does not deserve more attention and love than a white player who has passed. I think its sad that even in his death, Sean Taylor has to pay the price in the public forum for being black. Would people be complaining as much about him being remembered if he was white? I also take issue with the statement regarding Heath Ledger. This is a man who just tragically died, leaving behind a 2 year-old daughter and the only reason this blog feels its necessary to mention his name is to make a cheap joke at the fact he played a homosexual character. The fact that the author of this blog finds two men hugging to be funny is sad. I realize that as soon as this gets posted, the community on this board will immediately villify me. I did not expect to change those minds who have clearly been set. However, I found this whole thing very disturbing the first time it was discussed at the time of Sean Taylor’s death and again today. Stop judging people for what they do and what they wear on an athletic field and start viewing them as human beings. Sean Taylor doesn’t deserve to be trivilazed as a “douchebag”, a thug, or “a guy who loved stripes”. Whether he was black or white, a good player or not, he was still as much a human being as anyone writing on thi board and the same goes for Heath Ledger. Like I stated at the top, I have read every single entry that has ever been written on this blog or on ESPN. Sports and uniforms has played an important role in my life so I find uniwatch especially interesting but I will not visit the blog ever again because I can not tolerate the inability to think outside the bo x that many members of this community exhibit. Just finished watching the Avalanche/Wild game and about halfway through the 2nd period Ian Laperriere of the Avs hit Martin Skoula of the Wild and knocked one of the decals off of Skoula’s helmet. No pics as of yet.
