It’s not often that I run a lead item with no photo links. But reader Mark Snider sent me a really interesting communiqué the other day, and it deserves showcase treatment, even without pics. Check it out:
The Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League recently hosted the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. It was the Stampede’s NBA Affiliate Night [a promotion designed to highlight the relationship between NBA clubs and their D-League affiliates], so Idaho was wearing the black road uniforms of their NBA Affiliate, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Mad Ants wore the red uniforms of the Detroit Pistons.
But Mouhamed Sene, assigned to the Stampede by their other NBA affiliate, the Seattle Super Sonics, wore his green road Sonics uniform. Turns out that the Sonics didn’t want their contracted player wearing the colors of their division (and Pacific Northwest) rivals from Portland. So at times, you had Idaho players wearing black and green uniforms, with Fort Wayne’s team in red. Unfortunately, no photos of the game yet.
There was a similar situation earlier in the season, when Idaho was on the road and was supposed to wear their Sonics uniforms in a game at Rio Grande Valley, where the Vipers were wearing yellow New Orleans Hornets uniforms. But Idaho had an assigned player from Portland, and the Blazers didn’t want him wearing Seattle’s colors. So Idaho wore their regular road red uniforms instead. Apparently the D-League and NBA didn’t take into account assigned NBA players from different teams when they established the NBA Affiliate Nights.
Interestingly, Brian Thompson reports that a similar case of bad planning unfolded at a recent Ontario Hockey League game:
In conjunction with the Windsor Spitfires’ final year at historic Windsor Arena, they’ve brought back their 1950s jerseys for Sunday games. But the Plymouth Whalers only brought their white jerseys to last Sunday’s game, so after the first period the officials made the Spitfires switch to their red jerseys, which happened to clash with their retro socks.
I’m sure there’s a lesson here of some sort, but I’m too busy obsessing over the fact that there’s simply no excuse for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants’ uniforms not to use this fabric for their uniforms. I happen to have several yards of the stuff (that photo is actually a scan of the material) — anyone want to make a jersey out of it?

Annals of Human Folly, Vol. 879,351: Remember that chunk of plastic that came off of Ahmad Bradshaw’s helmet on Sunday? Giants equipment director Joe Skiba tells me he actually picked up the wayward fragment from the Lambeau Field turf — and then threw it away.
Are you fucking kidding me?! Here’s an artifact with “Hall of Fame Exhibit” written all over it, and Skiba treats it like a cigarette butt. As Scott Turner remarked when I told him about this tragicomic turn of events, “Why didn’t he just chuck the Mona Lisa in the trash while he was at it?”
I fully expect the next edition of Skiba’s online video series to address this woeful error in judgment. But I won’t be around to see it, because I’m so distraught over this episode that I’m about to go put my head in the oven.
Uni Watch News Ticker: I love The Power Puff Girls, and apparently so does R.W. McQuarters. I was pretty sure he rotated his cartoon Band-Aids from game to game, but this is the first time I’ve seen a clear shot of him wearing a non-SpongeBob strip. Also, I didn’t know this, but McQuarters’s Band-Aid ritual dates all the way back to his college days at Oklahoma State, as you can see in this 1996 shot (which was kindly provided by Clint Spaulding). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: At the 58-second point of this video clip, you can see one of those chemical hand-warmer thingies fall out of Brett Favre’s pocket. … Just when you thought you’d seen everything (with thanks to Chris Flinn). … Interesting mystery uncovered by John English, who sent along this photo gallery from the 1979 American League Red Book. As you can see, two of the Chisox players have red-brimmed batting helmets — never seen that before. Anyone know more about this? … Ewww. … Double-ewww. … All those Packers wearing sewn-in pockets on their jerseys prompted Noel Blaha to send in this shot of Benie Kosar — note the high pocket placement. “During the cold-weather games, one of his hands would seemingly be on top of the other in two different pockets, rather than one pouch,” writes Noel. … “You recently mentioned that the New York Rangers wore three different colored jerseys during a practice,” writes Danny Kroll. “But yesterday here in Pittsburgh, the Capitals wore six different colors during their morning skate.” … Remember, I’ll be deconstructing the finer points of trade magazines tonight at Union Hall in Park Slope, 8 p.m.

Regarding the White Sox batting helmets…
They never did wear a red brimmed hat as part of that uni set. It’s obvious from the pictures that they are playing the Angels, the White Sox batting helmets must have been lost in transit and they ended up borrowing ones from the Angels.
#11 by Adrian on 01.22.08 8:38 am |
It looks like the catcher is wearing the same helmet in those White Sox pics. Could it be that they were playing the Angels or Indians, and had to borrow batting helmets? Just throwing it out there.

Now I don’t play hockey but I’m pretty sure they wear different colours (yes colours – I’m Canadian) in practice to denote line combinations and defense pairings.
So for example if you were my beloved habs the top line might wear bleu, the second line may wear blanc and the third line would wear rouge.
I made up the example but I think you get my point.

The Blazer player on the Idaho team during the last Affiliation Night was Taurean Green. Local Portland media outlets reported that he actually did end up wearing Seattle green. The Blazers management threw a small fit after the fact. No pictures were provided.
I, for one, do not see the problem. The players aren’t actually playing for a division rival, and wearing the “wrong” uniform for a game isn’t going to have an effect on any contract, so what’s the big deal?

The white sox game in question is most likely Sunday May 20, 1979. If the Sox only wore those uni in 79 and 80, it would have been from 1979 as Soderholm was traded from the Sox to the Rangers in June of 1979. That leaves one three-game set at Anaheim May 18-20, 1979. I am assuming the friday and saturday games were at night, which would leave the Sunday afternoon game.
Still one thing doesnt jive. If it was misplaced batting helmets, this was series was the second road series. They played in Oakland before the California series. If the helmets were lost on the way to the Oakland sereis, surely they would have arrived in time for the Angels series. and if they were lost on the way to Anaheim, certainly they would have been there in time for the Saturday and Sunday games. Otherwise, the Sox played the entire series and possibly two entire series with other team’s batting helmets.

Not only that, depending on whether it was just paint or a layer of the helmet material (are those helmets even painted? My favorite part about the whole thing is the part where the front patch of the helmet and the remaining 4 both come free and travel in different directions. It is like that one photo Paul had of the helmet number flying off but even cooler.

1992 NHL All Star Game Recap from NYT
The National Hockey League All-Star Game is the one hockey game of the year after which the losing players don’t grouse and mutter and answer questions, heads down, with one or two words and cliches. And this afternoon, it didn’t matter that the Campbell Conference had defeated the Wales Conference here at the Spectrum by 10-6: Bryan Trottier was happy to have been a part of it and to have scored a goal.
“I played my first All-Star Game here in Philadelphia,” said Trottier, a former Islander and current Pittsburgh Penguin who played in his first All-Star Game in 1976 and was added to this season’s game under the senior category established last season. “I played my 1,000th game here, too, and the fans gave me a standing ovation. I have a few special memories here.”
The best memories of this All-Star Game, the league’s 43d, will go to Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues, who scored two goals and assisted on another and won a motor vehicle as the player of the game. He was right wing on a line with Los Angeles center Wayne Gretzky, who had a goal and two assists. The combination of hockey’s best sniper and hockey’s best setup artist was something special to see.
“I had the feeling I was going to get a couple of chances today,” said Hull, the league’s leading goal scorer, who missed last year’s All-Star Game because of a foot injury. “Gretzky is extremely easy to play with.”
Theoren Fleury of Calgary also scored twice for the Campbells, as did Brian Bellows of Minnesota. It was the first All-Star Game ever with no penalties. The Campbells had 42 shots on goal and the Wales had 41. The Campbells led by 2-1 after one period, then took command with six goals in the second off goalie Don Beaupre of the Washington Capitals.
It also was the first game ever to include two players from the former Soviet Union. They were Buffalo’s Aleksandr Mogilny and Detroit’s Sergei Fedorov. Mogilny scored a goal for the Wales and Fedorov had two assists for the Campbells. In the skills competition the night before, Fedorov won the speed-skating event and Mogilny finished second. After the game today, they posed together for pictures on the ice. Wide-Open Game
“I was a little nervous,” Fedorov said. “I am so excited and very happy for me and for my friend, Alex Mogilny. To be an All-Star is a very big surprise for me. I am so happy to play on the same team as Wayne Gretzky.”
Also scoring for the winners were Trevor Linden, Jeremy Roenick, and Gary Roberts. Also scoring for the losers were Kevin Stevens, Scott Stevens, Owen Nolan and Randy Burridge.
As is usually the case with these games, the players joked about the lack of checking and rough play and about the wide-open style that favors goal-scorers.
“Larry Robinson gave me the best advice,” said Mark Tinordi of the Campbells. “He said, ‘When Mario Lemieux comes on the ice, get off.’ “
Lemieux didn’t have a point today.

More on 1992 NHL All-Star
The Rangers take themselves so seriously this season that there was considerable grumbling today when the National Hockey League announced that center Mark Messier, defenseman Brian Leetch and goaltender Mike Richter were among the 15 players added to the Wales Conference team for the National Hockey League All-Star Game in Philadelphia on Jan. 18
Although this marked the first time since 1977 that the Rangers will dress as many as three players for the game, the players wondered aloud after practice why there could not be more. Why not four, or five?
“The selection process is so strange; I’ve given up trying to figure it out,” said Mike Gartner, passed over despite 24 goals. “I’m disappointed, but not that surprised. I think I’m on as good a pace as I ever was.” Complex Calculations
Gartner joined several other players around the league who probably deserved to play in the game but will not participate because of a complicated process that involved fan balloting and demanded at least one player from each team.
Among the 15 players added today to the 6 starters in the Wales Conference were defenseman Scott Stevens (10 goals, 27 assists, 37 points) of the Devils and wing Ray Ferraro (20-19-39) of the Islanders.
Left off were Claude Lemieux (25-12-37) and Peter Stastny (21-23-44) of the Devils; Derek King (24-15-39) of the Islanders; Sergei Nemchinov (20-10-30) of the Rangers and Joe Mullen (26-30-56) of the Penguins.
Even Richter, who gladly accepted his first-ever invitation, had some problems with the process. Three’s a Crowd?
For the first time, a panel of four winning general managers (Mike Keenan of Chicago, Rogatien Vachon of Los Angeles, Harry Sinden of Boston, and Craig Patrick of Pittsburgh) made the selections, instead of the All-Star coaches. Also for the first time, there were three goaltenders selected instead of two.
Richter, with a record of 15-6-1 and a goals-against average of 3.00, had no way of knowing whether he or Don Beaupre of the Washington Capitals (14-7-1, 2.88 goals-against) was the second choice behind Patrick Roy of Montreal, and this troubled him.
“It’s a fantastic honor, but I wish only two goaltenders were going, even if I was the third,” Richter said. “That way, making the team is more of a special thing.”
Richter felt uncomfortable discussing this honor with goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck dressing in the next stall.
“My position is comparable to Beezer’s, and I feel awkward accepting it,” he said. “And what about Gartner and Sergei? Is their value any less for not making it?”
Leetch was named to the team for the third successive season. Ridiculously, Messier was overlooked in the fan balloting, finishing eighth with just 20,539 votes. Ahead of him were such nonsuperstars as John Cullen, Pierre Turgeon and Dale Hawerchuk.
“That’s O.K.,” Messier said, of the puzzling fan vote. “When I was in the Campbell Conference, I never finished higher than sixth, either.” SLAP SHOTS
Instead of conventional practice today, the Rangers broke up into four teams and played a series of hockey and hand-eye coordination games.

Huh? When Sporting News came out with its Register or Guide for a season, you always knew the date on the cover was a year later than the statistics contained inside. The same logic follows for the Red and Green Books.

Sorry to be self-referencing here, but by way of further explanation, Salt Lake is the AAA affiliate of the Angels and was the younger Weaver’s final minor league stop before joining the Halos’ rotation.
Jeff came up through the Detroit organization, so his AAA stop would have been with the Toledo Mud Hens (the favorite team of one Maxwell Q. Klinger)

I’m almost certain that the White Sox pics come from the September 30-October 1 1978 end-of-season series in Anaheim. The Sox only played two series there that season, and Claudell Washington did not play in the first series.
I’m leaning towards it being the October 1 game, as the pics indicate a nice size crowd and it was the only game of the series to draw over 16,000 (Nolan Ryan was pitching).

Anyone notice the black clips on Bradshaw’s facemask?
I believe they are there to hold a visor in place, but he wasn’t wearing a visor for the game.
Here is a practice shot with one
http://www.giants.co...
My belief is that his visor “fogged up” from his warm breath and face in the cold weather. So it was removed.

I’m fairly certain that the background in the red book shots is Anaheim Stadium circa that era. It has been redone several times in response to an earlier post about it not looking right. The reason for the red brim? Who knows? A great Uniwatch mystery. If only one was turned a bit more to see if it has the old Angels’ A logo with the halo.
EVERY hockey team has six or seven different colored jerseys, many of them in odd colors. That was discussed last week when the Rangers shot was first posted. This shouldn’t be surprising that the Caps would have green or yellow versions. As was posted last week and today, they differentiate line combinations and defensemen from forwards. In high school, we just had one color of practice jersey but our coach still called us the “red line” or the “yellow line” for ID’s sake.

I just looked at Paper of Record, where old Sporting News can be accessed, and there’s no mention of it in the game summaries or in the columns about the Angels and White Sox. But I’m inclined to agree with those who believe the photos come from the last series of the year between the White Sox and Angels in 1978.

I’m a loyal Man City supporter. There is an enormous rivalry, a Yankees-Red Sox style rivalry, between these two clubs. There was a time when Man City was the dominant club, but they have struggled for the last 18 or 20 years, while Man U has enjoyed great success. At least once before, Man City officials have disavowed fans who have embraced chants and stadium songs mocking the Munich Disaster. It’s classless stuff, from usually decent fans.
During World War Two, the Germans bombed Old Trafford, home stadium of Man United. In the mid Nineties, one of Man City’s stars was a German, named Uwe Rossler. This prompted a very popular t-shirt slogan: “Uwe’s Grandad Bombed Old Trafford!”
It’s a heated rivalry.

Ty Conklin wore new leg pads last night when he replaced Dany Sabourin. I had expected him to only wear them during warm ups, but he was wearing them when he entered the game in the second period. Interestingly enough, he didn’t change his blocker and glove. He also switched from black pads to white pads (scroll down) Which is a pretty big change for a netminder to make, especially coming off a 10-1 stretch.

The D-League apparently always wears NBA jerseys of their affiliate. I remember seeing my hometown Dakota Wizards in the paper and at first I assumed they accidently used a Grizzles Vs Heat picture but upon further investigation they used the NBA jerseys. Also they use the balls that the NBA discarded because they want the up and coming players to be used to it for a switch in the future when most NBA players will have come up through the D-League and will not complain about the crappy ball.

Little Area Code history…Area codes were assigned based on the length of time a rotary dial phone took to dial the area code. Densely populated areas like New York City, Philadelphia and Los Angeles had huge call volume and were assigned numbers (212, 215, 213) that could be quickly dialed from a rotary dial phone. On a rotary dial phone low digits (1, 2, 3, 4) could dial quickly as the time the rotary dial took to return to the home position was minimal. High digit numbers (7, 8, 9, 0) on rotary dial phones took much longer to return to the home position and were usually used in less densely populated areas like Texas (915), Tennessee (901), San Bernardino (909). This system became unnecessary when touch-tone phones arrived, as the tone allowed instant entry of digits.

Speaking of the 1992 NHL All Star Game..
if anyone has the NHL Network.. it is on from 3-5 on the East coast…. check it out… great uni moments… especially the stripes from the neck to the wrists…
Yzerman wore # 18 in this game… has he ever worn another number beside 19 in a game?
and if there is any reason to watch… it has to be for the, at least, 3 or 4 awesome 1990’s mullets

Yzerman wore #14 at the 1983 World Junior Tournament and #8 at the 1984 Canada Cup. In tournaments since then, he has got his 19 (with Sakic usually getting 20 or 91 as a result). Even at the 2004 World Cup and 2006 Olympics, team Canada put his 19 aside and players such as Joe Thornton, Sakic, Shane Doan and Brad Richards who would usually wear 19 wore different numbers to honour the injured Yzerman.
From my searches, 1992 was the only year he didn’t wear 19 at the ASG

Pyatt is wearing a “cage” while his stitches and nose are healing. It is just a standard Bauer model cage used in all levels of minor hockey. Every manufacturer has its own style. They are required equipment up to the Midget level (15-17) in Canada and up to NCAA in the States.
I do not believe that any NHL’ers wear a cage on a regular basis. Only while recovering from injury.
Some prefer the Itech “bubble” which is half visor with plastic bars and chin at the bottom. You might sometimes even see players that cut the visor section out of the Itech “bubble” to just protect their jaw when they suffered an injury to their lower face.
I remember when some players (70’s early 80’s) would adapts football kicker’s or QB’s single and double bars masks. to do the same thing. I even remember one player that took a football mask and cut it in half to just protect the injured side of his face. (IIRC, he played for the Canadiens) That was probably to save a little weight since those old football mask were probably felt fairly heavy when mounted on those old/ill-fitting hockey lids.

More uni-watching to be had at CAN 2008 where the colors red, yellow, and green never seem to go out of style. Cameroon plays it safe against defending champions Egypt which is unfortunate given the club’s innovative past. Zambia goes all Penn State up in this mug while Sudan doesn’t make much of their first appearance in the tournament in forever.

That’s standard across the D-League for assigned players. Since players can be sent down by 2 or sometimes 3 parent clubs, the assignees wear their parent’s logo on the back of the uni.
Another interesting note about the D, apparently players are only allowed to wear numbers from players on the NBA’s Greatest 50 Players list. Of course you’ll see 23, 32, 33, even a Robert Parrish 00, but I have yet to hear of a player wearing 99, and I think that’s a shame.

I was watching the Michigan versus Wisconsin Basketball game on ESPN when I spotted a weird thing about Michigan’s uniform. I had always liked their throwback style jerseys, with the simple stripes in this era of nike horns, even if they have added a new nike style half collar. This just makes you think of the Colts and LSU type football jerseys. When did this venture into basketball? The jerseys aren’t even cuut differently from ten years ago. Has anyone else noticed this?

Maybe George Mitchell and the MLB Steroid Committee should place a call to Brian Downing of the WSox, Angels and Rangers and ask him a few question???
THe bespectacled Brian Downing didn’t look like a ballplayer, and early in his career it seemed he was destined for a brief stay as a journeyman catcher. But after his trade to the Angels in 1977, he blossomed, developing into a top-notch catcher, and later, a slugging outfielder/DH who enjoyed his best seasons after the age of 31. By keeping his body in great shape through weight-lifting, Downing defied the decline of age and played regularly until he was 41 years old. He set several career records for the Angels and was one of their most popular players.
