They should probably rethink this whole college basketball thing. Texas A&M in black, Kansas State in … white, I guess. Bad doesn’t do it justice. On an otherwise delightful day in college basketball, this is unfortunately an enduring image. Unless, of course, you’re like me. Through several hours of deep concentration (I found a self-study tape on eBay; had to buy a cassette-tape player, but it was totally worth it), I now have no recollection of Saturday. Ignorance is bliss, friends.
But I took notes in order to bring you this. That’s Baylor’s Tweety Carter (No. 20) in what is likely the blood jersey. His usual number is 45 and the Bears are an NOB team. Plus, dig the Nebraska cheerleaders in the background. Cool socks, even though they’re Adidas stripes.
I’m going to put the finishing touches on my igloo today. Projected high in Omaha: 17, with 20mph wind and snow showers. Awesome. — Bryan

There was alot of cool things in the Shrine game last night…most notably the inclusion of schools we’ve never noticed before, especially those north of the border like Sherbrooke University of Quebec. As well as an exciting player from a non-scholarship 1-AA program at USD with a cool uniform. Unfortunately, I vividly remember that uni because in college I played against USD all four years and was administered a butt-whooping each time!
#6 by Vincent A. Cipollone on 01.20.08 9:05 am |
Not uni-related at all but it’s been bugging me for a while so I’ll ask anyway. Paul Smith, the quarterback for Tulsa played in the Hula Bowl. He also played in the East-West Shrine Game. Is that allowed? I’ve never seen the same player play in two college all-star games. I have Uni Watch to blame for my conundrum because there was a picture of Paul Smith playing in the Hula Bowl for an Open Thread one day.

What’s it say that as soon as I turned on the K-State and A&M game and saw A&M in black jerseys I knew they were going to lose.
As a KU fan, I’m actually not bothered that much by the Trajan font on the jersey. What really bothers me is that the neckline has red trim, but the sleeves are white trimmed because the red stops under the opening. When seeing it from the front it just doesn’t look right. Either all red trim or all white trim.

The hamartia of the black jerseys are the dark numbers. Are they black or maroon? Precisely my point. Numbers need to have high contrast for easy readability so that referees can call fouls on the right people.
Those Nebraska cheerleader uniforms are hampered greatly by the random stripes that lead to nowhere. I’m not a fan. And shouldn’t the bosom logo salute the school? Why on Earth are they wearing “08?” Yes, it’s 2008, but it looks dumb.

I will take pictures when I get to Lambeau. There is no way I am going to let the cold get in the way of me watching the Pack dominate tonight.
Game time temps will be below zero, but when Favre hoists that George Halas trophy, I will be a balmy 75 degress!

I took these pictures last week at the Kansas game, but it provides more pictures of the changes by the Nebraska cheerleaders.
A brief recap:
Earlier this season, they were wearing what could be called
traditional cheerleading uniforms.
Then a few games into the football season, they broke out these nice
old school sweaters. I do not believe the change coincided with the change in weather, but it might have been when the Big 12 season
started.
The origin of the old school uniforms from 1967 (and also a shot of
the 2006 get up)
Then later in the season they switched back to a more contemporary
sweater.
The cheerleaders continued to wear the old school sweaters during the basketball season until last week, which was the first Big 12 game for Nebraska. (A cheerleader said the sweaters were too hot to wear indoors). I think they were trying to mimic a basketball uniform with the tank top and skirt while reminding us what year it was. But undoubtedly the best part of the uniform was
the knee-high red socks with stripes. Even though it was adidas stripes, the look was nice. Views of the front and back:
I was talking with a cheerleader yesterday and she said they have some more changes lined up for the rest of the season.

Antonio Pierce for the Giants is playing with only one RBK logo on his sleeves. I know I saw Jacobs’ decal rip, but did anyone else see this? Photo search hasn’t turned up anything yet, but his left shoulder has the logo and the right shoulder does not. I know that they use patches for the logo instead of them being sewn directly into the sleeves so it can be placed anywhere due to the tailoring of some of the jerseys, so did his patch just rip off? Was it not there to begin with? I’ll keep looking for pics and post what I can find.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ on a Stick!
I am going to abhor this Super Bowl. For two reasons.
One. Everyone outside New England hates the New England Patriots for their cheating.
Two. I fucking hate the New York Giants because they’re in the same division as the Philadelphia Eagles, the NFC East.
I am so going to so motherfucking hate the next fourteen days. I’ll just watch the Suoper Bowl for the commercials and the Tom Petty halftime show, because I am in a no-win situation.

Why is that Baylor jersey (NNOB) referred to as a blood jersey?
#168 by Spiderpig on 01.20.08 10:31 pm |
You’re right, TOG. I hated when they changed to those uniforms a couple years ago because they have no blue, except for their socks and helmets. I hope the Giants get to wear their home blue jerseys in Arizona, which they actually wore for their first two playoff victories this season. Unfortunately, the Patriots probably have the choice because Pittsburgh had it two years ago when they chose their road jerseys after making a similar run to the Giants this season. Maybe NE will choose white, but I doubt it. They look good in either.
We’re going to the Super Bowl!! WHOO!
#169 by Spiderpig on 01.20.08 10:33 pm |
TOG – They rotate the 6:30 slot between the AFC & NFC every season. No choice to make. It would have been cold either way.
I almost died a little when I heard that Tynes was coming out for that OT kick. According to a stat FOX showed earlier, that would be the longest FG by a playoff opponent in Packers history, since nobody had made one over 40 yards prior to tonight.
#170 by TOG on 01.20.08 10:38 pm |
Question:
If the Packers win the NFC..and if the NFC is the home team in the SB..do they wear the Lambeau logo on the jersey? And if so, where does the “C” go? You’d have a “C”, a Lambeau, and a SB patch.
No worries.

I noticed something while watching the Giants game. (Sorry, no screen grabs.) Anthony Wright #2’s red helmet stripe comes to a halt in the back, so his white rear number is on blue. But Lawrence Tynes #9’s stripe goes all the way, meaning his white rear number is on red, which I think is proper. Anybody else catch this? I think this would be a good question for Mr. Skiba.

Man, I can’t remember who it was, but there was a Giants player with his zipper unzipped in the first half of the game. It MIGHT’VE been Jacobs or Bradshaw, but the TV replay gave a really clear view of the guy’s zipper wide open as he ran out of bounds.
If you have the game Tivo’d and are planning on watching it again, look for a play in the first half, where a Giants player gets pushed out along the sidelines. I know, pretty vague description, but it’s the best I can remember right now.

The blue and white jerseys are permanent home and away jerseys, closely modeled after throwbacks. (Today, they have a metallic blue helmet and the front number font is more modern. Throwback? You be the judge.) The red jerseys are not intended to be throwbacks at all, even though the Giants have a red jersey in their history. Those red jerseys had khaki pants and a Michigan helmet, neither of which are in the present ensemble. The red jersey is designed as an alternate, as it is simply the blue jersey, subbing blue in favor of red.
