The Worst Form of Government, Except for All the Others (Probably)

dewey_defeats_truman1.jpg

Apparently they were voting for something or other in Michigan yesterday. But the bigger election story came, as election stories so often do, from Washington. Only this one had nothing to do with the White House.

Here’s the deal: About a year and a half ago, Major League Baseball randomly selected about 20,000 of MLB.com’s registered users and invited them to join a huge virtual focus group called Fans at Bat (further background info, much of it somewhat sick-making, is here). The focus group members — several of whom happen to be Uni Watch readers — have periodically been prompted to fill out online questionnaires and give feedback regarding various MLB policies and decisions. One of the early questionnaires involved getting feedback on the U.S. national team’s uniforms (I’m pretty sure I ran a Ticker item on that back at the time, but at the moment I can’t find it), but apparently none of the others have been uni-related.

Until now, that is. Several readers checked in yesterday to inform me that the latest Fans at Bat survey had just kicked into gear and that it involved the Nationals’ uniforms. Kim Kolb explains how the questionnaire began:

[The survey started by asking] if I had any MLB wearable merch (hats, jerseys, sweatshirts, T-shirts, etc.), and who my favorite team was. I answered “Phillies,” but the survey didn’t seem to care. It basically said, “We’re going to ask you about the Nationals…”

Ben Park picks up the sequence from there:

The survey started by asking what my favorite team was (I’m a Cardinals fan). Then it told me there were several questions concerning the Nationals uniforms that they wanted info about, regardless of how I felt about the team, which I thought was very interesting. … I’ve learned in the past that once the web link is used, it can’t be used again, so this time I made sure to get screen grabs of the questions so I could send them to you.

Thanks to Ben’s quick thinking, we can all see that the survey asks for a basic assessment of the Nats’ home whites, then asks a squishy follow-up question, and then repeats the process for the road grays, the alt reds, and the cap logos. Then there’s an overall assessment and a chance to make suggestions.

The most interesting questions, of course, aren’t the ones in the survey. They’re more along the lines of “Are the Nats thinking of a uni revision?” and “Is this because the team’s merch sales are in the toilet?” and “How soon can I cast my vote against the Mets’ black jersey?”

Todd Radom, who designed the Nats’ threads, says this is all news to him and that he doesn’t know anything about any planned changes (not that they’d necessarily tell him anyway), and I’m too busy with other stuff right now to pester the MLB people about this (not that they’d tell me anything either), but I hope we can revisit this topic in more detail at a later date. Uni design via referendum doesn’t strike me as the smartest idea in the world.

Meanwhile, just to bring things full circle, I caught a quick glimpse of a Mitt Romney campaign rally on TV yesterday and noticed that many of the people in the crowd were holding up signs shaped like baseball gloves — mitts, get it? Only problem is, a regular fielder’s glove is not a mitt, because “mitt” is short for “mitten” and only applies to the fingerless gloves worn by catchers and first basemen. Do we really want a president whose campaign makes this sort of mistake? I think not.

calendar_clip_art.jpg

Uni Watch Calendar: Coupla events coming up that NYC-area readers will want to know about. The first one is next Tuesday evening, January 22nd, when I’m going to be participating in a performance/presentation thingie at Union Hall in Park Slope.
The event is called Adult Education (the name wasn’t my idea, believe me), and the topic is “Micro-genres,” which in my case means I’ll be talking about the largely hidden realm of trade magazines — American Funeral Director, Elevator World, Hay & Forage Grower, etc. Each of these industry-specific magazines is a little world unto itself, full of really weird articles and ads for solutions to problems you never thought of. An oddly compelling little corner of the media world. In addition, my pal Liz Clayton will discuss fast-food restaurants that have been repurposed into other sorts of businesses (a topic she also explores on this excellent site), Jim Hanas will discuss meta-tourism (photos of tourists taking photos), Heidi Cody will talk about depictions of Eskimos and Indians on food packaging, and Russell Scholl will examine TV commercials for personal hygiene products. I’m fairly certain it’ll be fun. Plus it’s free. Festivities begin at 8 p.m.

And just like last year, I’ve decided to convene a Brooklyn Uni Watch party on the day before the Super Bowl, which is February 2nd. Venue and starting time are still being finalized, but figure mid-afternoon in the Park Slope-ish vicinity. Further details to follow shortly.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The Bridgeport Sound Tigers wore camouflage jerseys the other night. Additional pics and info here (with thanks to Tom Liodice). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Prior to the release of Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas sponsored a Formula 1 race car, complete with storm trooper helmets for the pit crew (with thanks to Sarah Schneider). … You know how some players have their uni numbers written on their socks and/or stirrups? Four-time New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee Al Smith took things a bit further than that (nice find by Eric Trager). … During the Cowboys/Giants broadcast, the announcers mentioned Brandon Jacobs’s extra-large thigh pads,” writes Nate Budziszewski. “Sure enough, they are huge.” … On Monday I wrote that several of the Packers like to tuck their collar trim into their pads, resulting in a lower placement for the NFL Equipment logo. But Alex Ramirez says this is a matter of tailoring, not tucking: “I got some screen caps of Donald Driver [without his pads],” he writes. “As you can see, the collar trim is cut differently. I wonder if this is something Marge Switzer would have done.” Good question, although I’m fairly certain she won’t say. … Major cleavage alert at the Australian Open, where Austrian phenom Tamira Paszek was pulling a Serena the other day. … Interesting note from Will Radie, who writes: “While reading Messier (a great read by the way), I discovered that When Messier came to the Rangers, he missed the first game of the season because the trade hadn’t yet been finalized. Adam Graves took Messier’s No. 11 for that first game in honor of his former teammate (Messier was still technically an Oiler). So are there pictures of Graves wearing an No. 11 jersey out there?” … Good views here of the paisley-trimmed design that UNC’s women’s hoops team wore in the early ’90s (with thanks to Todd Krvanchi). … Yesterday’s comments included some pics of a phenomenon with which I’d previously been unfamiliar: ski jumping at sports stadiums, as seen here at Soldier Field and Dodger Stadium. Bizarre. … Also from yesterday: Cam Ward has his surname engraved into his mask. … The Chicago Fire have taken on Best Buy as a jersey sponsor. More pics and details here. … Nowadays, of course, NFL waistband towels feature the NFL and Wilson logos. Too bad they can’t go back to this (nice spot by Dan Herr). … If you download this PDF, you’ll get a little style guide for the University of North Dakota’s graphics (with thanks to Jay Danbom). … Jeremy Brahm found some great old photos of Japanese Olympic attire, including 1932 gymnastics; 1924 marathon (toe shoes!); 1908 speed skating (check out the skates); 1936 figure skating; 1912 track and field; and 1952 wrestling. … Also from Jeremy: the latest outfit from Japanese table tennis fashion plate Naomi Yotsumoto. “It’s based on Joan of Arc because Yotsumoto wants to make a revolution in table tennis,” he explains. … This photo is part of a Flash sequence on the Pistons’ web site. Not sure of the date, but here’s my question: When did NBA refs stop wearing zebra stripes? … The Cincy Bearcats football team is switching to Adidas (with thanks to Matt Lesser). … Jay Swenson reports that the Great Falls White Sox have become the Great Falls Voyagers, thanks in part to a viral marketing campaign that included phony UFO sightings. … Each day seems to bring a better photo of the muff sack play (this one courtesy of Geoff Poole). … Apparently you really can find anything on craigslist (good spot by Erik Koper). … Possibly the biggest bowl patches ever, worn by Auburn in the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl (good find by Jeffrey Lindquist). … Not uni-related, but two great bits at HomerDerby.com: Harry Caray going on a truly hilarious anti-Cracker Jack rant (he compares the product to corrupt Congressmen, among other things), and a series of stadium demolition videos.

Not quite uni related but did anybody notice that the footballs in the cowboy-giants game had what looked like a gold spot on the tip of the ball.

That Voyagers marketing campaign is genius, i love it! The NHL needs to talk to these people to get some GOOD ideas on their marketing efforts.

The Star Wars tie-in was not the only time that Red Bull Racing has done movie promotion at the Grand Prix of Monaco. They did similar branding for the release of Superman Returns. David Coulthard finished third in the race, and had to continue the promotion on the podium.

I was at the Capitals-Senators game last night and noticed each goalie had a small uni issue. the Capitals had back -up goalie Brent Johnson in goal and he wore simple white cotton socks, not the tight fitting red ones the rest of the team wears. On the other side, Senators goalie, Ray Emery was wearing last seasons cotton red and black striped socks. Of course I did not have my camera….but the question remains: can goalies wear any sock they want since they are mostly covered with their pads? Is there some sort of fine for not wearing the full uniform which matches the rest of the team?

It seems odd that MLB would ask questions about the Nationals uniforms now. The new ballpark is set to open in 74 days and it is full of curly W’s and the existing logos.

For the record, I love the curly W. I understand why people want to see the DC logo used more, but it is too clunky on the cap for my taste.

And as I have mentioned in a post awhile back, John Erskine of the Caps still does not zip up his pants (breezers, whatever).

Have I missed the link for the UNC uniforms?

I die a little inside everytime I watch the video of The Vet coming down.

Oops. Now fixed.

Good views where of the paisley-trimmed design that UNC’s women’s hoops team wore in the early ’90s (with thanks to Todd Krvanchi)?!

The trade mags I get (Healthcare Financial Management being the best of the bunch) are sadly boring - even to those in the field. Offbeat trade mags are lots of fun, though.

Woops. Sorry a little late on that. Thanks.

I’ve asked Post writers on chats about potential Nats’ uni changes and they usually answer that the Lerners aren’t planning anything except an emphasis on the curly W. Maybe next year?

gloves for romney…i think not

Four-time New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee Al Smith took things a bit further than that (nice find by Eric Trager).

its surprising that they focus on just the nationals…

Actually, Naomi Yotsumoto’s mixed double partner was dressed us as her as well.

Just imagine how we’ll feel when they take down the Spectrum for a Mall. There are fifteen warehouse/parking lots that would be better suited for that mall then the spectrum.

I never did like the curly W with the modern “Nationals” font, either make the Nationals scripted to match the W or vice-versa. Plus, I think Fans at Bat needs to address a more pressing issue, that is, getting players to wear the pants properly.
On another note, I love that Storm trooper pit crew!

The Babe was known as a big Smith supporter in 1928. I have seen pics of him wearing Smith campaign material, but can’t track it down at the moment.

We’re lucky that the Spectrum is still standing as/is the way things go these days.
Sure we’ll have memories, but I, along with most of the Philly area, haven’t been there in about 10 years.

That whole are needs revitalization, if it has to start with taking down “the rectum”, so be it.

I was at that 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl (now Outback Bowl) between Auburn and Ohio State. Largest bowl patches ever vs. largest tv numbers ever…good matchup. BTW, Auburn won easily (remember Ohio St. is winless against SEC foes) 31-14. :)

Even though I prefer the “DC” design I respected the decision to have a link to Washington’s baseball past with the curly “W”. Like you, I wish they had gone with a uniform that complemented the script, as long as they went with that style.

worst aussie open outfit this year

No pics, but I’ve seen Carolina goalie Cam Ward up close, and this year, he wears these awful tan or khaki colored socks, so I guess there is no rule, since the socks can only be seen from the back anyway…..

Whoa, wait, she’s 17!?!?!

The most interesting questions, of course, aren’t the ones in the survey. They’re more along the lines of “Are the Nats thinking of a uni revision?” and “Is this because the team’s merch sales are in the toilet?”

I say it is time to revisit the uniwatch design contest that had readers design the new Washington unis as the Expos headed to DC! And I’m not saying this just because I won. (OK, maybe I am.)

Ok…but shouldn’t it be for a different team…

A couple of things:

1. I’m looking forward to Adult Education as well as the Brooklyn Uni-Gathering.

2. In the pic of Jacobs’ thigh pad, the Cowboy defender on the left must be wearing a Schutt helmet for there is no nose bumper.

http://assets.espn.g...

This dates back to the 90’s when Aikman, Haley, Norton, Erik Williams and Moose all wore Schutt AiR helmets without bumpers.

A Google search indicates she wore #20, but for a second I wondered if that Tar Heel jersey belonged to her.

Slightly OT, but only because I can’t seem to register for ESPN page 2.

There is an earlier NHL memorial patch than the one given to Pelle Lindberg. Same team, though — the Flyers put a 4 inside a small circle at the top of the shoulder in the mid-70s to remember Barry Ashbee, who died of leukemia. Very small, very subtle. Have to look for it to even see it.

As for the 17-year-old Austrian — meh. Mary Pierce in her prime was, ah, pretty. Oh, so pretty. And witty. And bright.

The reports of Romney’s intelligence and attention to sports are greatly exaggerated:

“I’m an English literature major. When we say I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn’t necessarily mean you were there.” (Mitt Romney, Dec. 20th)

Several entrants lamented that the White House’s current occupant has turned the letter W into a rather loaded proposition. So why not base the cap logo on “D.C.” instead? Here’s the best such submission (whose creator also runs BallWonk, an excellent blog devoted to Washington-area baseball).
Doesn’t this design appear to give reference to the president before “W”?

I still can’t believe that anybody thinks people will think their Nats hat is a political statement. Seems ridiculous to me.

Although I like to refer to the DC hat as the Dick Cheney hat, because I think it is funny that people would choose that because the W gives them the willies.

Hopefully, that isn’t why your former career was only four years long!

Paul, the Rio Grande Killer Bees also held a promotional night for Star Wars when Revenge of the Sith came out. While there was no mention made of George Lucas personally sponsoring the Central Hockey League team or the event, they clearly went all out with their jerseys for the event.

Personally, it’s kind of a neat looking jersey.

how is it odd? The Nats contacted MLB and asked them to send out the questions.

Louisiana Tech will eventually release a new Athletic wordmark and Bulldog logo (”New Logos Soon!” on right side of the website). Tech has used the state-T design for decades, and will continue to use it, but the Bulldog has been inconsistent throughout the school’s history. Tech has already sent a survey to fans/alumni asking their opinions on current logos and using the term “LaTech” in an official way (this has many fans split, currently the school discourages the use of anything but “Tech” or “Louisiana Tech”).

how is it odd? The Nats contacted MLB and asked them to send out the questions.

Maybe the Rays should have thought about that!

http://farm2.static....

Those pictures of Tamira now gives me twoo more reasons to watch tennis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other day, Paul included a photo of an Indians jersey with a “Progressive” nameplate. I am not sure the first picture in this gallery is any different. Even so, it is cool that the AAA Braves club will be so close. As a resident of Gwinnett County, it should be interesting.

http://farm2.static....

The Rays did. They sent a letter to the MLB office and they responded…”You’re still in the league?”

Those pads Brandon Jacobs is wearing look like he got ahold of Ottis Anderson’s old knee pads.

Paul, the FansAtBat survey isn’t a ‘Design by referendum’ … it’s more of a recall vote. Hopefully, the Design by Referendum stage never occurs, though that may be fun, too.

Other than being red, white and blue, I don’t think there’s an element of the Nats uniforms that I do like. A big problem was probably that it was designed by committee when MLB owned them.

And all credit to Ben Park for being quicker than me in realizing when a UniWatch moment was happening.

Who has two thumbs and likes the Chicago Fire?

This guy!

plus, isnt it the nationals responsibility to take care of the focus group, the survey, etc. and not MLB’s?

Since goalies tend to be “quirky”, (see Gilles Gratton’s mask, Glenn Hall’s habit of throwing up before every game, etc.) the operative rule is “whatever the goalie wants”… I suspect the cotton socks are simply more comfortable than whatever crap RBK is using now; and it takes a sharp-eyed observer to notice any difference between the goalie’s mostly-hidden socks and the visible uniform socks of the skaters.

My “quirk”? I used a belt to hold my pants up… I never could get used to the suspenders!

The Nationals definitely need to make an update of this jersey. The ultra-modern gold/red or gold/blue lettering just looks ridiculous when put next to the hat. I’d also like to see the block W from the way-old-school Senators hats (1920’s), but it wouldn’t fit with the script jerseys.

Regarding the Red Bull Racing Star Wars thingy, I believe that came out for the Monaco Grand Prix in the same year that Episode III came out. Red Bull and the old owners of the team, Jaguar, have a bit of a history with promotions at Monaco, with some going better than others

Speaking of the Nats, check out Manny Acta sporting the old wool hat in this year’s Thanksgiving parade.

Harry Carey’s rant on Cracker Jacks was great. And to show what kind of a pro he was, he never missed a pitched while ranting away. That’s what makes baseball announcers more special than the other sports. Lots of built-in down time when you can rift on subjects. You’d never hear that anywhere else.

I saw the new Gatorade “League of Clutch” magazine ad yesterday. Does anyone know why Derek Jeter isn’t wearing a real Yankees Uniform even though Manning and D-Wade are wearing their team unis? Is there some type of copyright issue between the Yanks and Gatorade?

Good question.

I’m glad to see my favorite women’s beach volleyball team of Walsh and May-Treanor made the ad also! Coincidentally, they frequently wear Gatorade temporary tattoos on their upper arms, but Gatorade decided against putting them in the picture.

Something like this likely happened
MLB: “hi teams we entered into agreement with a survey company, if you ever want to do a survey you can contact us to use the service, heres the details…”
time passes
Washington: “MLB offices? this is the nationals, we’d like to do a survey and you guys are set up for it, here are the questions.”
MLB: “OK, no problem, we’ll send it out.”

Not between the Yankees and Gatorade, but MLB and Gatorade, I think.

I remember watching the Vet demolition on channel 6 (ABC) here in Philly. The mayor came out to do a speech (got booed, of course) and botched the countdown.
They had a plunger that Greg Luczynski and the Phillie Phanatic pushed down on that had already fallen down during the course of the proceedings.
To top it all off, somebody in the crowd yelled “FUCK YOU!!” at the top of their lungs as the Vet was crumbling live over the air.
A perfect ending, I’d say.

just thought you’d all like to know that the University of Dayton men’s hoops team will be wearing some bad-ass powder blue alternates tonight when they take on UMass.

The Flyers will also wear some 1970s-era(?) throwbacks next Wednesday when they host St. Louis.

damn, thought i could get the link to work…

whatever, there’s pictures at http://daytonflyers....

Saw some dugout pictures on the Yankees web galleries and there are very clearly Powerade coolers in plain site. I would say that the Yankees have a deal with Powerade and so the Yankees won’t allow Jeter to be in a Gatorade ad in a true uniform. I see this all the time around Atlanta with Airtran ads featuring prominent Atlanta athletes in generic uniforms because either the league or team has a deal with Delta.

As for the Nats, I appreciate the effort that went into the current design, however, it does not work at all with the script “W”.

eith go all modern, or go back to the old script.

Either way, no pinsptripes, please.

just thought you’d all like to know that the University of Dayton men’s hoops team will be wearing some bad-ass powder blue alternates tonight when they take on UMass.

The Flyers will also wear some 1970s-era(?) throwbacks next Wednesday when they host St. Louis.

An interesting side note on these uniforms. When they were announced about two months ago it was also mentioned that a limited number of replicas if each were going to be on sale at Korporate Kasuals, who do all of the merchandising for UD. When I went home to visit my family for Christmas, I stopped in because I wanted a pair of the throwback shorts. I was disappointed to see no shorts and only 4 of the baby blue alts on the rack. I spoke with one of the owners to find out about the shorts and he told me that he hadn’t brought any in as the $150 price tag would have made them tough to sell. He went on to say that they were not replicas, but they were in fact authentic jerseys direct from Nike. When the school placed their order they added 6 extra jerseys to each order to be sold at Korporate Kasuals and at the spirit shop during the games. The cost of the jersey was $200, so alas I left empty handed.

As if the Bridgeport Sound Tigers’ camo jersey wasn’t vile enough… they had to put Mastercard logos on them!??!?!?!

While the Nats jersey needs work, I’m on the fence regarding the cap designs. I like the nod to the old Senators “W” but I also like the interlocking “DC”.

Yeah, I think I could learn to become a tennis fan…

Regarding Adam Graves, I’m going strictly from memory here, but I believe 11 was his number since he joined the team, until which point he happily surrendered it to Messier upon his joining the team. If anyone here can locate a 91-92 or 92-93 hockey card of him, his two seasons with the Rangers before Messier joined them, I’d be willing to bet he has number 11.

On another note, it’s interesting that the ebay auction with UNC jersey makes no mention of the fact that it was the *women’s* uniform. It’s listed as Gender: Male, and yet the description says it’s an authentic jersey that was like the ones used in games. One of those must be incorrect. :)

Well, if he’s NOT a ref, what’s your theory regarding who he is? Some dude in a heavily striped shirt who happens to be at courtside?

Lots of, ummmm, motion in this Tamira pic…

It’s a Foot Locker employee dropping off an order of Chuck Taylors.

Re: Adam Graves #11

Apparently the 1992 NHL pro set has a card with him in a #11 jersey.

Quoting myself but according to the Rangers website, they list Graves as first wearing #11 and then #9. It’s halfway down under “MISCELLANEOUS”.

You posted this before I could. I am not one for LaTech/LATech but it looks like I will have to learn to like it.

On the topic of goalies wearing different colored socks…

Going by foggy memory here, but I vaguely recall one or more netminders in the 60’s or 70’s wearing different socks. I think there may have been a Bruins goalie who wore the road yellow socks while the rest of the team had the home white jerseys and white socks on (or vice versa if it was before 1970, meaning the dark colors were the home colors). This will be tough to find pictures of though…

What is going on in that pic? Is a player-coach turning in and signing a lineup card? Is it an autograph for the scorers table? Why is the foreground guy wearing lighter colored shorts?

Aren’t those actually Clone helmets?

As another Washington area resident, I’ve had plenty of thoughts on the Nationals’ uniform. I’ve never cared for the team nickname, mostly because I feel like “Nationals” and “Nats” lacks any character. Uniform-wise, I didn’t like the curly “W” at first, but it’s grown on me. The only reason I like the “DC” logo is it matches the jersey lettering better than the curly “W, but I really don’t like the clunky block lettering they picked for the jerseys. I’d rather they came up with a new jersey design.

But I do have to say that the red alternate uniforms can look pretty sharp, especially when the players wear the pants right.

As far as uni by referendum goes didn’t Charles Comiskey pull something like that back in the 70’s? He actually let fans submit unis for consideration. I remember them being pretty freaking hideous.

Are you the same Paul Lukas who used to put out the Beer Frame zine?

I was rethinking the Seahawks third color “snot” accessories, gloves, cleats, infamous hand warmers. Have any other teams, besides the Bengals with the orange, and Giants with the red, so prominently featured their accent color?

For example, imagine the Packers players wearing yellow gloves and cleats!

WNBA and pole do not exactly go together…..for a couple of reasons….

Veterans Stadium implosion complete with ex-Mayor (about time) Street’s infamous countdown.

Here’s the Channel 6 one with the F-U at about 1:22.

YouTube is the greatest.

No, the Comiskey family had sold their interest in the White Sox by the mid-60s. It was Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn who staged the design-the-uniform contest.
