That is similar to Georgia’s helmets and their merit stickers. The white bones signify great plays on the field. The black bones signify achievements in the classroom which are tallied by the academic advisors.

This picture (from the newest Sports Illustrated) shows a couple of Tennessee lady Vols and the player in the center (#3) has a patch on her jersey that the other players don’t have. Note: my crappy scan missed the player to the right but no patch for her either. Any clues?

The patch is an academic achievement thing that Tennessee does. Can’t remember what it’s called, but I know it’s been discussed on here before.
