The site had very little traffic back on December 24th, so most of you probably missed an interesting discussion prompted by this Ticker item, which mentioned that Penguins equipment manager Dana Heinze was planning to have goalie Dany Sabourin wear “a set of earmuffs with the team logo” over his mask in the Winter Classic game.
As it turns out, that didn’t happen. But the mention of it in the article led Keith Merritt (aka The Ol Goaler) to post the following comment:
If Dany Sabourin wears earmuffs in the outdoor game against the Sabres, it will hearken back to one of the lowlights in Pens history. Back in the late ’60s, Pens coach Red Kelly had his entire team wear earmuffs for an indoor game at the St. Louis Arena, in an effort to block out the noise of the rabid “singing fans” of the Blues. After the Blues scored their third unanswered goal, Kelly threw his earmuffs to the floor in frustration.
I’d never heard this story before, so I immediately put out a call for photos and additional info. A reader who goes by Nuk quickly responded with this (scroll to page 21), which lists the date of the incident as January 3rd, 1970, and explains that the ’muffs were worn only by players on the bench, not by those on the ice. A few hours later, reader Bob A came up with some major paydirt, demonstrating yet again that Uni Watch readers can untangle the threads of almost any historical mystery, even when operating with only a Christmas Eve skeleton crew.
Okay, so the those ’muffs didn’t look quite as cool as these Muffs. But the bigger issue, at least to me, is that those fluffy earmuffs aren’t designed to block out noise — they’re only supposed to keep you warm. Maybe those headphone-ish earmuffs, like the ones worn by airport runway monkeys hadn’t been invented yet in 1970, but what about, um, earplugs? Less embarrassing-looking and more effective to boot.
And then that got me thinking about athletes who’ve worn earplugs. The most prominent recent example is Rafael Palmeiro, but he’s far from the only one: Bobby Bonilla wore ’plugs during his Bronx-cartography stint with the Mets (sorry, no photo), and I observed Chuck Finley going ’plugged on at least two occasions (best photo I could find was this).
I’m sure there are others I’m overlooking. Clearly, we need to assemble a team of earmuff/earplug all-stars. Let the nominating begin.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Giants equipment director Joe Skiba’s latest video report is available here. … Interesting bit here about the Arizona hoops team’s shoes (with thanks to Dan Thomas). … While researching something else, I came across this early-’90s shot, showing the Lions wearing a memorial patch. Anyone know who it’s for? … Not such a great idea (fortunately, I was off at the movies seeing There Will Be Blood, which was completely mind-blowing — not to be missed). … Did you know Minnesota wore this jersey design in 1995? I didn’t, until Dan Schneeman told me. … Uni Watch antique photography authority David Brown sent me this 1870 shot yesterday. “Check out the amazing ironclad ship on the bib of one of the uniforms,” he writes. “Is that some kind of first for representational images on baseball uniforms?” Probably. … Follow-up from Richard Fronheiser regarding yesterday’s post about the officials wearing red and green armbands during the ’69 Rose Bowl: “Back in the day, players would have to report in as substitutes. One team reported to the official with the green armband and the other reported to the official with the red armband. Simple as that.”

The key words in your post are “the (famous) Monitor.” All ships of this type — turret(s) and low freeboard — were referred to as “monitors,” so the team could have come from another ship. For example, see this picture of the USS Casco: http://www.history.n...
The Casco’s silhouette is actually closer to picture on the unis than that of the USS Monitor.

I was little disappointed that KU wore their crimson alternates because I prefer the blue. But at least their alternate is actually one of their school colors (Crimson and Blue) and not black.
On the flip side, they are undefeated in the crimson alternates since they added them a few years ago. They also have a road alternate wear they wear red socks, normally reserved for the Missouri game if I remember correctly.

and the gray ankle tape, nice detail touch….
Two name plate comments from the game…
1. I HATE the way VT’s name plates cross their nike piping on the back of their jerseys. They need rounded plates (like the giants and aggies) or something else. or just get rid of the piping altogether.
2. Several KU players with longer last names had name plates in a different font (and size) than the other players…

Re: the Minnesota f-ugly jerseys; this was when Apex One was trying to get into the apparel biz. Their (in my opinion) ugliest unis were for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They were supposed to represent wings (I think), but actually looked like banana peels.
If you remember back a couple of years, Paul, when somebody spotted Iowa LB Chad Greenway at a Hula Bowl or Senior Bowl workout and said the Hawks were gonna have new pants for 2006, those were the half-stripe pants they wore with them.
The only thing I liked about those banana-peel jerseys was the Tiger Hawk on the left front and “Hawkeyes” on the right. Shoulda stopped there.

I don’t necessarily dislike the red Giants jersey, I just don’t think it fits with the whole motif of them being “Big Blue”. I also don’t think the blue helmet compliments the rest of the uni being red. If they had a red or even a white helmet, I think it would actually look pretty snazzy.
#22 by Randy Miller on 01.04.08 9:45 am |
The double-M jerseys came during Jim Wacker’s run at Minnesota and a nagging memory tells me that he helped design them.
If it’s a failure, at least it’s not a corporate orange sports bra failure. I liked that it tried to do something different. Since then, Minnesota has pretty much worn basic maroon and gold — except for those awful all-golds this year. I’d remember have the double-Ms than that…

False. The Giants look bad. Kansas looked horrible. At least the Giants attempt to continue the red throughout the rest of the uniform. Red stripes on the pants overpower the blue. Red socks.
Kansas had a big thick blue stripe down their pants and no socks (except for a few whites here and there). The red was just thrown in there for no reason. It looked like they were all wearing non-contact jerseys at practice.

Regarding Kansas’ red jersey…
Was any thought put into wearing their alternative jersey for arguably one of the biggest games in their program? Surely if they thought this through, they would have preffered to have the historical records and a national stage show ‘em in their primary blues and not their secondary color? Looking back on this game, would a Kansas fan not wonder, “why weren’t we wearing our blues?”

The Red Sox wore their green jerseys, traditionally only worn on St. Patricks Day, during a regular season game vs the Yankees last year. They wore them as a tribute to Red Auerbach. So not only is this a cross sport tribute, but its an entire jersey, not just a patch.
#44 by Jeff on 01.04.08 10:35 am |
As I mentioned in my post above, KU was and still is undefeated in their red jerseys. The team enjoys them and it gets them excited. Much like how ND breaks out their Green jerseys every now and then.
Rather interesting story with the red jerseys: Last year the plan was to red-shirt Reesing, but in the game against Colorado, at halftime they put him and, stripping him of his red shirt, and he rallied them to win. They wore their red jerseys for that game. Kinda ironic.
And the red jerseys on the football team aren’t nearly as bad as the red basketball jerseys.

Interesting points regarding the Golden Gopher Double-M pic:
1. Notice Illinois going monochromatic back in 1995
2. Notice the Big Ten Nose bumpers on the Schutt Air helmet nose bumpers
3. # 5 of Minnesota is wearing Wilson receivers gloves, however has a pair of Nike team issued gloves very similar to those of the Illinois defenders, on his belt.
4. Said gloves are not TB(Team Bank) colors but are veryu neutral white and black. Nike did not make color or team specific gloves as of yet.
5. Again said gloves are not base gray as per NCAA guidelines which came in to effect a few years later. I was a freshman playing Div. 1-AA ball in 1995 and I still preferred my white Neumann gloves to the yet unproven Nikes. And believe me, I am a Nike guy all the way.
AS for Mangino, why is the Kansas jacket Black?

I was in the Minnesota Marching Band in 1995 so I had to look at those uniforms at every game. The oddest thing was that they adopted a non-university standard gold, rather than the “gold” (actually yellow) that the rest of the teams used, and continue to use–and which the football team has mercifully gone back to.
#55 by Husker E10 on 01.04.08 11:09 am |
As I mentioned earlier…I personally think the issue here isn’t so much how the jerseys look — but at how history is going to be recorded. For one of the biggest games in school’s history — wouldn’t they have wanted to wear a non-alternative jersey? For example, I doubt if ND makes it to a national championship game, they’d wear the green alts — they’d go with their tradional blues and golds. I realize this wasn’t a national championship game — but this was as close as Kansas has come to one in awhile.
#56 by Rick on 01.04.08 11:09 am |
What I never understood is why teams, professional or college, would wear an alternate uni when they are featured nationally or in championship type games. You would think that from a marketing or a historical photgraphic record standpoint, you would want to convey your team or organizational image when you have your largest audience that may not be familiar with you. Keep the alts for your home fans.
#57 by Jared on 01.04.08 11:12 am |
Two notes:
The Phoenix Suns had retro night last night only there was a problem. The cheerleaders wore dated uniforms, he fans were encouraged to dress in 60s garb and even the television broadcast was in black and white, but the players, well the players said “no” to the uniforms. No reason was given but they chose to wear headbands instead and ditched those after the first time-out.
I personally love the old unis from the 1960s, but why even do throwback retro night without the uniforms?
And about the Kansas coach, maybe he should do something about his weight. How can players ever take him seriously when he says they are out of shape or not working hard enough. He’ll be dead in ten years and that will be sad.

Afew more things from the Minnesota Double-M pic:
http://farm3.static....
1. The Minnesota ballcarrier is wearing a Schutt helmet with a Riddell facemask, the type which has always been referred to as the ED(Eric Dickerson) or the Tweety(as in a birdcage).
2. The Illinois defender on the right side of the pic is wearing the same style of facemask but the Schutt version.
You can spot the major difference below the high hook up of the chin strap next to where the face mask is fastened to the helmet above the earhole. The Riddell has a double angled connecter, where the Schutt has a simple 30/60 degree angle.
ANother major difference was the lower jaw guard of the faemask. The Riddells were much shorter and thinner gauge coating, similar to what a kicker or Ted Ginn Jr. might wear. I know, I wore a Schutt Air helmet all through High school and college with Riddell facemasks. The difference was immense and I didn’t know it but I was in the adolescent stages of Uni-watch depravity.
3. The Illinois defender behind the ballcariier is wearing a Riddell helmet similar to the VSR or today.

The Blazers showed you how to really do a red alternate last night. I just love the Blazers unis in general, but their reds are some of the nicest alts in the NBA.
I also agree that there is no need for flash or fancy to make your uniforms “spirited” or inspire someone to go to your school over another.
Would you rather be wearing this or this?
In my opinion, Boston College has the best looking “modern” type uniform. The right amount of flash (number font) with a lack of stupidity. I just wish they would go back to using this eagle on the sleeves (without the “BC”) instead of the Philadelphia-like eagle.

RE: Kansas Alts
I tend to agree with questioning why KU wore their reds last night. I like them OK but they’ve got a great, unique color of blue that would’ve looked better for last night.
But I disagree that other teams won’t do likewise; teams pick uniforms for whatever reason fits them for the moment. Ohio State picked white last year for the BCS title game and Pittsburgh did likewise for Super Bowl XL. Not the alts, but both teams elected not to go with their traditional preferred color.

The KU in red for national game is really the same argument I posted in here the other day talking about the Pens/Sabres throwbacks. They are pros and cons to wearing them (or not wearing them).
I know some of you don’t like the Hawaii uniform but I’d give them a little bit of slack, there are elements of the culture within that uniform that make it very unique. It may not be the best looking uniform, especially against classics like USC, ‘Bama, PSU, et al. but it’s not in the same light as the bad stuff we’ve seen lately like Oregon or Oregon State or in years past like those terrible Iowa unis (so glad when they went back to the faux-steelers look) or those BYU front/back things that I believe were outlawed by NCAA (does anyone have photos of those?)

Hawaii’s uniforms are great.
If all the teams looked like the classic teams, you all would be bitching that everyone looked the same!

Can you answer just be a permanent post or under Q&A?

The TV broadcast was black & white? Now that’s going all out! wish I could’ve seen that.
Coach Mangino reminds me of the movie “Running Brave, about an Indian who becomes a track star in college (I even think he went to Kansas) and later goes to the Olympics. The coach in the movie was portrayed by Pat Hingle (another portly fellow) and I remember thinking back then, “how unusual, to have an overweight track and field coach?”
I hear the same jokes around here about Ralph Friedgen, but in all seriousness, those coaches need to be careful. I don’t want to read a story about them collapsing on the sidelines of a heart attack.

I can’t find any pics, but I know Villanova and Kentucky had AWFUL Apex uniforms during the early to mid 90’s around the Kerry Kittles, Walter McCarty eras.

I love USC’s and Michigan’s uniforms. In my opinon the rest are horrible.

I totally agree, I’ve seen some artwork of that logo on a white helmet and thought it looked really sharp. That logo, the simplicity of it, inside that oval, the use of negative space, is one of my favorite logos in all of sports (and me being a pitt, well you know how hard it is for me to say that!). I always thought it was a waste of a great logo that they didn’t use it for anything (football related).
I’m all for a “classic” look but that PSU look is just too plain for my tastes. There are a lot of high schools and small colleges that use navy and white in an understated manner without going overboard.
