The site had very little traffic back on December 24th, so most of you probably missed an interesting discussion prompted by this Ticker item, which mentioned that Penguins equipment manager Dana Heinze was planning to have goalie Dany Sabourin wear “a set of earmuffs with the team logo” over his mask in the Winter Classic game.
As it turns out, that didn’t happen. But the mention of it in the article led Keith Merritt (aka The Ol Goaler) to post the following comment:
If Dany Sabourin wears earmuffs in the outdoor game against the Sabres, it will hearken back to one of the lowlights in Pens history. Back in the late ’60s, Pens coach Red Kelly had his entire team wear earmuffs for an indoor game at the St. Louis Arena, in an effort to block out the noise of the rabid “singing fans” of the Blues. After the Blues scored their third unanswered goal, Kelly threw his earmuffs to the floor in frustration.
I’d never heard this story before, so I immediately put out a call for photos and additional info. A reader who goes by Nuk quickly responded with this (scroll to page 21), which lists the date of the incident as January 3rd, 1970, and explains that the ’muffs were worn only by players on the bench, not by those on the ice. A few hours later, reader Bob A came up with some major paydirt, demonstrating yet again that Uni Watch readers can untangle the threads of almost any historical mystery, even when operating with only a Christmas Eve skeleton crew.
Okay, so the those ’muffs didn’t look quite as cool as these Muffs. But the bigger issue, at least to me, is that those fluffy earmuffs aren’t designed to block out noise — they’re only supposed to keep you warm. Maybe those headphone-ish earmuffs, like the ones worn by airport runway monkeys hadn’t been invented yet in 1970, but what about, um, earplugs? Less embarrassing-looking and more effective to boot.
And then that got me thinking about athletes who’ve worn earplugs. The most prominent recent example is Rafael Palmeiro, but he’s far from the only one: Bobby Bonilla wore ’plugs during his Bronx-cartography stint with the Mets (sorry, no photo), and I observed Chuck Finley going ’plugged on at least two occasions (best photo I could find was this).
I’m sure there are others I’m overlooking. Clearly, we need to assemble a team of earmuff/earplug all-stars. Let the nominating begin.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Giants equipment director Joe Skiba’s latest video report is available here. … Interesting bit here about the Arizona hoops team’s shoes (with thanks to Dan Thomas). … While researching something else, I came across this early-’90s shot, showing the Lions wearing a memorial patch. Anyone know who it’s for? … Not such a great idea (fortunately, I was off at the movies seeing There Will Be Blood, which was completely mind-blowing — not to be missed). … Did you know Minnesota wore this jersey design in 1995? I didn’t, until Dan Schneeman told me. … Uni Watch antique photography authority David Brown sent me this 1870 shot yesterday. “Check out the amazing ironclad ship on the bib of one of the uniforms,” he writes. “Is that some kind of first for representational images on baseball uniforms?” Probably. … Follow-up from Richard Fronheiser regarding yesterday’s post about the officials wearing red and green armbands during the ’69 Rose Bowl: “Back in the day, players would have to report in as substitutes. One team reported to the official with the green armband and the other reported to the official with the red armband. Simple as that.”

The key words in your post are “the (famous) Monitor.” All ships of this type — turret(s) and low freeboard — were referred to as “monitors,” so the team could have come from another ship. For example, see this picture of the USS Casco: http://www.history.n...
The Casco’s silhouette is actually closer to picture on the unis than that of the USS Monitor.

I was little disappointed that KU wore their crimson alternates because I prefer the blue. But at least their alternate is actually one of their school colors (Crimson and Blue) and not black.
On the flip side, they are undefeated in the crimson alternates since they added them a few years ago. They also have a road alternate wear they wear red socks, normally reserved for the Missouri game if I remember correctly.

and the gray ankle tape, nice detail touch….
Two name plate comments from the game…
1. I HATE the way VT’s name plates cross their nike piping on the back of their jerseys. They need rounded plates (like the giants and aggies) or something else. or just get rid of the piping altogether.
2. Several KU players with longer last names had name plates in a different font (and size) than the other players…

Re: the Minnesota f-ugly jerseys; this was when Apex One was trying to get into the apparel biz. Their (in my opinion) ugliest unis were for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They were supposed to represent wings (I think), but actually looked like banana peels.
If you remember back a couple of years, Paul, when somebody spotted Iowa LB Chad Greenway at a Hula Bowl or Senior Bowl workout and said the Hawks were gonna have new pants for 2006, those were the half-stripe pants they wore with them.
The only thing I liked about those banana-peel jerseys was the Tiger Hawk on the left front and “Hawkeyes” on the right. Shoulda stopped there.

I don’t necessarily dislike the red Giants jersey, I just don’t think it fits with the whole motif of them being “Big Blue”. I also don’t think the blue helmet compliments the rest of the uni being red. If they had a red or even a white helmet, I think it would actually look pretty snazzy.
#22 by Randy Miller on 01.04.08 9:45 am |
The double-M jerseys came during Jim Wacker’s run at Minnesota and a nagging memory tells me that he helped design them.
If it’s a failure, at least it’s not a corporate orange sports bra failure. I liked that it tried to do something different. Since then, Minnesota has pretty much worn basic maroon and gold — except for those awful all-golds this year. I’d remember have the double-Ms than that…

False. The Giants look bad. Kansas looked horrible. At least the Giants attempt to continue the red throughout the rest of the uniform. Red stripes on the pants overpower the blue. Red socks.
Kansas had a big thick blue stripe down their pants and no socks (except for a few whites here and there). The red was just thrown in there for no reason. It looked like they were all wearing non-contact jerseys at practice.

Regarding Kansas’ red jersey…
Was any thought put into wearing their alternative jersey for arguably one of the biggest games in their program? Surely if they thought this through, they would have preffered to have the historical records and a national stage show ‘em in their primary blues and not their secondary color? Looking back on this game, would a Kansas fan not wonder, “why weren’t we wearing our blues?”

The Red Sox wore their green jerseys, traditionally only worn on St. Patricks Day, during a regular season game vs the Yankees last year. They wore them as a tribute to Red Auerbach. So not only is this a cross sport tribute, but its an entire jersey, not just a patch.
#44 by Jeff on 01.04.08 10:35 am |
As I mentioned in my post above, KU was and still is undefeated in their red jerseys. The team enjoys them and it gets them excited. Much like how ND breaks out their Green jerseys every now and then.
Rather interesting story with the red jerseys: Last year the plan was to red-shirt Reesing, but in the game against Colorado, at halftime they put him and, stripping him of his red shirt, and he rallied them to win. They wore their red jerseys for that game. Kinda ironic.
And the red jerseys on the football team aren’t nearly as bad as the red basketball jerseys.

Interesting points regarding the Golden Gopher Double-M pic:
1. Notice Illinois going monochromatic back in 1995
2. Notice the Big Ten Nose bumpers on the Schutt Air helmet nose bumpers
3. # 5 of Minnesota is wearing Wilson receivers gloves, however has a pair of Nike team issued gloves very similar to those of the Illinois defenders, on his belt.
4. Said gloves are not TB(Team Bank) colors but are veryu neutral white and black. Nike did not make color or team specific gloves as of yet.
5. Again said gloves are not base gray as per NCAA guidelines which came in to effect a few years later. I was a freshman playing Div. 1-AA ball in 1995 and I still preferred my white Neumann gloves to the yet unproven Nikes. And believe me, I am a Nike guy all the way.
AS for Mangino, why is the Kansas jacket Black?

I was in the Minnesota Marching Band in 1995 so I had to look at those uniforms at every game. The oddest thing was that they adopted a non-university standard gold, rather than the “gold” (actually yellow) that the rest of the teams used, and continue to use–and which the football team has mercifully gone back to.
#55 by Husker E10 on 01.04.08 11:09 am |
As I mentioned earlier…I personally think the issue here isn’t so much how the jerseys look — but at how history is going to be recorded. For one of the biggest games in school’s history — wouldn’t they have wanted to wear a non-alternative jersey? For example, I doubt if ND makes it to a national championship game, they’d wear the green alts — they’d go with their tradional blues and golds. I realize this wasn’t a national championship game — but this was as close as Kansas has come to one in awhile.
#56 by Rick on 01.04.08 11:09 am |
What I never understood is why teams, professional or college, would wear an alternate uni when they are featured nationally or in championship type games. You would think that from a marketing or a historical photgraphic record standpoint, you would want to convey your team or organizational image when you have your largest audience that may not be familiar with you. Keep the alts for your home fans.
#57 by Jared on 01.04.08 11:12 am |
Two notes:
The Phoenix Suns had retro night last night only there was a problem. The cheerleaders wore dated uniforms, he fans were encouraged to dress in 60s garb and even the television broadcast was in black and white, but the players, well the players said “no” to the uniforms. No reason was given but they chose to wear headbands instead and ditched those after the first time-out.
I personally love the old unis from the 1960s, but why even do throwback retro night without the uniforms?
And about the Kansas coach, maybe he should do something about his weight. How can players ever take him seriously when he says they are out of shape or not working hard enough. He’ll be dead in ten years and that will be sad.

Afew more things from the Minnesota Double-M pic:
http://farm3.static....
1. The Minnesota ballcarrier is wearing a Schutt helmet with a Riddell facemask, the type which has always been referred to as the ED(Eric Dickerson) or the Tweety(as in a birdcage).
2. The Illinois defender on the right side of the pic is wearing the same style of facemask but the Schutt version.
You can spot the major difference below the high hook up of the chin strap next to where the face mask is fastened to the helmet above the earhole. The Riddell has a double angled connecter, where the Schutt has a simple 30/60 degree angle.
ANother major difference was the lower jaw guard of the faemask. The Riddells were much shorter and thinner gauge coating, similar to what a kicker or Ted Ginn Jr. might wear. I know, I wore a Schutt Air helmet all through High school and college with Riddell facemasks. The difference was immense and I didn’t know it but I was in the adolescent stages of Uni-watch depravity.
3. The Illinois defender behind the ballcariier is wearing a Riddell helmet similar to the VSR or today.

The Blazers showed you how to really do a red alternate last night. I just love the Blazers unis in general, but their reds are some of the nicest alts in the NBA.
I also agree that there is no need for flash or fancy to make your uniforms “spirited” or inspire someone to go to your school over another.
Would you rather be wearing this or this?
In my opinion, Boston College has the best looking “modern” type uniform. The right amount of flash (number font) with a lack of stupidity. I just wish they would go back to using this eagle on the sleeves (without the “BC”) instead of the Philadelphia-like eagle.

RE: Kansas Alts
I tend to agree with questioning why KU wore their reds last night. I like them OK but they’ve got a great, unique color of blue that would’ve looked better for last night.
But I disagree that other teams won’t do likewise; teams pick uniforms for whatever reason fits them for the moment. Ohio State picked white last year for the BCS title game and Pittsburgh did likewise for Super Bowl XL. Not the alts, but both teams elected not to go with their traditional preferred color.

The KU in red for national game is really the same argument I posted in here the other day talking about the Pens/Sabres throwbacks. They are pros and cons to wearing them (or not wearing them).
I know some of you don’t like the Hawaii uniform but I’d give them a little bit of slack, there are elements of the culture within that uniform that make it very unique. It may not be the best looking uniform, especially against classics like USC, ‘Bama, PSU, et al. but it’s not in the same light as the bad stuff we’ve seen lately like Oregon or Oregon State or in years past like those terrible Iowa unis (so glad when they went back to the faux-steelers look) or those BYU front/back things that I believe were outlawed by NCAA (does anyone have photos of those?)

The TV broadcast was black & white? Now that’s going all out! wish I could’ve seen that.
Coach Mangino reminds me of the movie “Running Brave, about an Indian who becomes a track star in college (I even think he went to Kansas) and later goes to the Olympics. The coach in the movie was portrayed by Pat Hingle (another portly fellow) and I remember thinking back then, “how unusual, to have an overweight track and field coach?”
I hear the same jokes around here about Ralph Friedgen, but in all seriousness, those coaches need to be careful. I don’t want to read a story about them collapsing on the sidelines of a heart attack.

I totally agree, I’ve seen some artwork of that logo on a white helmet and thought it looked really sharp. That logo, the simplicity of it, inside that oval, the use of negative space, is one of my favorite logos in all of sports (and me being a pitt, well you know how hard it is for me to say that!). I always thought it was a waste of a great logo that they didn’t use it for anything (football related).
I’m all for a “classic” look but that PSU look is just too plain for my tastes. There are a lot of high schools and small colleges that use navy and white in an understated manner without going overboard.

Yes Russ Thomas was who the Lions were honoring.
Also the Red Wings wore a patch for enforcer Vladamir Konstontiov and trainer Sergei Mensaconov (sorry I am sure I butchered the spelling) in the 1997-1998 season.
They weren’t killed but shortly after the teams 1997 Stanley Cup Championship, they, along with teammate Slava Fetisov took a limo after a party. Sadly they didnt know the limo driver had been dubbing it up all day and wrapped the limo around a tree in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. Vlady’s career was over and has been in a wheelchair for 10 years and Sergei is basically a vegetable. Fetisov, except for some minor cuts and scrapes, was fine. The limo driver didnt serve any jail time if I remember correctly. Red Wing fever was so palpable here at the time, he was almost lynched.
They wore the patch in the 97-98 season and I noticed that some of the goalies, such as Ed Belfour for the Dallas Stars wore the patch on the back of his goalie mask. Seeminly an odd thing to do since the Wings & Stars were rivals then when Dallas was good. They ended up playing each other that year in the Western Conference Finals.

Very interesting. Auburn fans often clamor for the orange jersey to make a reappearance (it’s been used 3 times, maybe 4, with the last use coming 27 years ago), but Tuberville insists that the blue is nationally recognizable, so they take advantage of that.
#112 by Fleeser on 01.04.08 12:33 pm |
I noticed the same thing about VT’s name plates. I think they’d be better off without nameplates altogether. Either affix the letters directly to the jersey, or go nameless.
I don’ like Kansas’s uniforms either, but my primary reason is not the red jerseys (even though I don’t particularly like them). I hate them because of the Trajan font they use, which, incidentally, also ruined their basketball uniforms. I’m with this guy.
On the other hand, I really like Virginia Tech’s uniforms. I just wish they would have worn maroon pants last night.

It appears that Rick Dipietro got in trouble for some goalie pad shenanigans. What’s interesting to me is that these pads he received and use din a game are plain white. Beckham wore Umbro kit during his years with Manchester United, without affecting his personal deal with Adidas. It has been a fortuitous (for Adidas, anyway) coincidence that his subsequent clubs (Real Madrid and LA Galaxy) were both Adidas teams.

I’ve been playing soccer for a long time, and something about those warmup suits just doesnt look right. The top looks like some srt fo rain proof top. Very smock like

First off, Favre was wearing one of those no-face ski-mask thingies, so that might be what’s covering the hole. To me it just looks like it’s covered in shadow. But I’ve also seen him have the ear holes taped over in warm-ups on the outside.
As far as the Penn State helmet chat goes, you can’t change that helmet. It is just as iconic as the golden helmet of Notre Dame, any alum would tell you that. Certain teams won’t and shouldn’t ever change. That why god/Nike made Oregon football teams to use as sketchpads for the mentally changed.

First, the pads can be whatever colour a player chooses. Take Marc-Andre Fleury and Arturs Irbe as examples. Most times, though, the goalie will match the colours of the pads to the team colours so that he doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb (who made that expression up???)
Secondly, the pads shenanigans are very real. The NHL has expicit rules that goaltenders and equipment managers should know. If they have not been inspected by Kay Whitmore, the NHL’s equipment guy, they cannot be used in an NHL game until that has been done. No exceptions.
It seems to me that some miscommunication caused Dipietro’s problem.
#161 by Bruce on 01.04.08 2:43 pm |
Perhaps because they changed their helmet style this year.
#162 by LI Phil on 01.04.08 2:55 pm |
well, that, and those other schools have real teams
#163 by Peter on 01.04.08 3:04 pm |
I realize that some goalies have white pads, but to my knowledge Dipietro has never gone this way before. And considering he replaced the white pads with is normal coloured pads it sure seems like he was doing something unusual here. I’m guessing he might have tried an end around on the league and got caught. Or his equipment people may have just messed up on this one.
The last interview I heard from Kay Whitmore, about a month ago after the Turco/Smith vs. Luongo situation, he said that all equipment went to the NHL central office long before it got to the players, it is quite odd that something other than that would’ve occured. I’m sure Itech, the Islanders training staff, and even Dipietro would know about this procedure since all of his current equipment and that of the other goalies who have been on the Islanders roster this year went through the process already. I just always think it looks boring when goalies have plain pads, they are the one player on a team who get to take liberties with their uniforms, mask and pads, so why not have a little fun with it. Of course then we wouldn’t have Arturs Irbe looking like he found his equipment in the dumpster before the game.

“…And the red jerseys on the football team aren’t nearly as bad as the red basketball jerseys.“
The red basketball tops are terrible. Painful, actually. I think that the football tops weren’t bad and does start a nice “big game” uniform tradition for Kansas, which has not been a football school prior. The gray tape on ankles was nice to see with the pants color.
The red tops aren’t always appealing, but I think that Kansas pulled it off.
On other issues, could VT have had any more patches on the front of their unis? Looked well past cluttered. And their nameplates on the mesh backs looked like they were digitally added.

I remember beng mad at the 49ers for wearing their throwbacks in SB 29, and the Chargers not wearing their far superior throwbacks. First off, why confuse all of the people who don’t watch through the entire season by wearing something different. I will allow 1994 as a special circumstance (75th Anniversary), but it needed to both or neither.
Even worse, I can answer the question about why the NFL allowed the 49ers to wear throwbacks and not the Chargers (if they wanted to, which I don’t think they did) - The Helmet. San Francsco wore their regular helmet and San Diego didn’t for their throwback.

I think it’s the color scheme and the uniform design. I get what they are going for the the triangle pattern on the leg, but I just don’t get it. The black helmets are just wrong, on everyone, I think. But I also think part of it might be the different flairs that Brennan and the rest of the team add to it. The white leggings Brennan was wearing in the Sugar Bowl. The Black under armour you see sometimes under the jersey. With respects to the few on here that like black I can’t stand it on uniform design and it seems that when Hawaii goes black they just overload you with it. And then there is the black visor you often see Brennan use.
I think since I don’t often see them except for Brennan (because really does anyone know the rest of the team unless you are a fan of Hawaii) it may just be him. He usually looks terrible. I don’t like all the added things like wrist/arm bands, visors, under armour and the like. Nor do I, as previously stated, like black.

Don’t know how to link…so here goes. Penn St. had numbers on their helmet before 1974 or so.

And big bold blue stripes on their pants, with high socks with stipes on them from time to time too. But that was more than thirty years ago, and until the 1960’s and early 1970’s almost everybody wore numbers on their helmets.
#199 by Chad G on 01.04.08 5:24 pm |
Now I’m pretty sure Jesse is a Penn Stater, if I remember correctly. My question is Kerry P are you? Because if you are not then you don’t understand. Like Paul said the plain helmets are part of why Penn State is Penn State. Now if your dream is to support a team that wears Navy and white with a white helmet and an oval logo become a BYU fan.

When John Cappelletti won the Heisman PSU had helmet numbers and TV numbers which is kind of redundant which is probably why they were removed. Now Alabama, the team that is iconic for helmet numbers does not have TV numbers on their jerseys.

The Gophers M&M jerseys — if I remember right, they actually had a sponsorship deal with M&Ms that year, and that’s partially where the M&M jerseys came from.
The Old Gold and darker Maroon — they wore those colors for the entire Jim Wacker era. I didn’t mind the colors (I really liked the gold helmets with maroon facemasks) — but they weren’t the official school colors. Glen Mason switched them back to the yellow-gold and redish-maroon that they wear today.
#205 by Jeffrey on 01.04.08 6:08 pm |
instead of a ku hat mangino could wear a hat that reads: “i may be fat but you’re ugly and i can diet.”
#206 by Kek on 01.04.08 6:13 pm |
OK then case closed {sarcasm}
I take it from some of the comments made after this post that this is going to be one of those Uni-watch undebatable points like the color purple, nike, logo creep. You can have your opinion… but it’s wrong.

how does anyone not know about those minnesota and/or iowa unis?? were you living under a rock???
#211 by Johnny O on 01.04.08 7:20 pm |
Hahaha… I actually have that magnet on my fridge.
And the guys on Around The Horn today were making fun of Mangino for being fat today, which I thought was in poor taste. Tony Reali would say, “What a huge win for Kansas”… and then it would show a clip of Mangino and Reali would say, “Oh that’s not necessary!” (When it was obviously on purpose) I think this happened like three times.
#212 by Johnny O on 01.04.08 7:22 pm |
Sorry… i should have been more specific. Reali emphasized the word “huge”.
#213 by david on 01.04.08 7:22 pm |

I was wondering since the QB’s have a mic in their helmet, could they possibly get help from an OC, to whent they might be getting some pressure from behind them? I think I had this question watching the VT/KU game last night, KU came on a corner blitz from the blindside. Couldn’t someone have been yelling at him that pressure was coming (at the nfl level)? If so isn’t that an unfair advantage for the offense to have the possibility of an extra set of eyes in that could see the whole field.
#215 by david on 01.04.08 7:28 pm |
qbs in college do not have mics in their helmets…geez..where do you epople get your info??

They turn the NFL mics off when the ball is snapped, maybe sooner, so the coaches can’t talk to the QB during game play.
#219 by Dean on 01.04.08 8:02 pm |
Which is probably why I said “(at the NFL level)” I was just using the college game as an case in which it could have helped. Maybe you should read the post, then reread yours to find your spelling errors “people”.

#222 by Dean on 01.04.08 8:06 pm |
Thank you, I was wondering if they might haven been able to to mute the mics during the play. I also think that cuold be very annoying to your QB during a play.

I remember the 49ers got the NFL to allow them to wear the throwbacks for the remainder of the season that year because they went on a winning streak. I don’t remember how many games it was for.
#225 by Bob H on 01.04.08 8:14 pm |
I agree to leave the helmets simple with no logo but the plain whites are too simple. Stick with the no logo look but wear navy pants with the white jerseys. White and navy on the road and navy and white at home.
#226 by LI Phil on 01.04.08 8:17 pm |
so they could look like this?

Anyone a graphic designer??
If so, I didn’t know where else to go but faithful Uniwatch. I am with a company that is just getting off their feet and we need a company logo! I’ve been jotting down and drawing ideas but I am at a huge writer’s block (or designer block?) Anyways, I’m in charge of our official uniforms (which will mainly be polo’s w/our logo’s on them) and the company logo as well as business cards.
So hopefully someone is a graphic designer or knows someone whom they can refer to me!!
My email address is bms42@pitt.edu if you would like more information!!
Thanks everybody!!

I love the red jerseys for the Giants. Here’s what I hate. Long red under sleeves, red leggings, red gloves, red shoe tape, etc. First of all, your under sleeves should be black or the dominant color. If the Giants would wear blue leggings and make players get rid of the red accessories, then they would look great.

Our resident graphic designer is Scott M.X. Turner. If his membership cards are any indication of the quality of his work, then he would be a good contact. I’m sure you could get in touch with him through Mr. Lukas.

On the Kansas front…
Bill Self has said he doesn’t like the red uniforms, but since adidas wanted them to be worn twice, they were worn twice. (Once for an exhibition, once for the Christmas-flavored game against green-clad Ohio U in Kansas City.)
And as for Mangino…it’s funny how a guy who “can’t get respect from his players because of his weight” has taken KU from 2-10 to 12-1 in six years. Keep sawing that wood, Big Man.
I was a KU fan before Larry Brown brought in the “Circus/Old West” font that some people are so enamored of. I’m happy with the Trajan, it’s freshened up our look without committing some of the fashion sins I’ve seen on other teams.
I could’ve lived without the red football jerseys last night, but the players like them. Red was pretty common as a primary color on KU teams through the late 50s, so it isn’t like they’re pulling it out of thin air.
And the Orange Bowl was a good time in person, I hope we make a habit of it.

sorry if this
1. Contains spelling errors
2. is incoherent.
3. doesnt’ have a point.
everyone refering to NFL QB’s having a microphone in their helmet… that is not the case. the have a speaker a microphone would allow communication from QB to OC when there is only OC(or whoever calls the plays) to QB communication
sorry that was bothering me

Paul, I know this against your beliefs, but I will now and forever be a supporter of purple. Here’s why:
My school Prairie View A&M (the one with the 80 game losing streak in the ’90s) ditched purple home unis about 3 years ago (and somehow ditched white aways as well…) So for my first 2 years of college I was forced to see them in these and these. We switched to these and these this year and posted our first winning season since 1976, and our best record since 1964. I think I appreciate purple now.

theose hoya iverson era uni’s are one of my favorites of all time, any team, any sport.
i dont know if that will be the case on this topic, but your statement above should be tweaked a bit.
PL encourages us all to have our own opinions to create an educated discourse among us all. his opinions are always backed up with reasons and in some instances, data (which should be the rule: if you like or dislike a uni, tell me why! give me justification!)
PL has never stated that anyone’s opinion is wrong though.
it is my observation that some readers DO take PL’s opinions for gospel, and then create these untouchable walls around them. you listed many of his opinions which fit that bill. but it was the readers who built these walls, not PL.

Why, Mizzou fans, of course! (Yes, this shirt is in terrible taste, and the University stopped their sale ASAP, as they should have.)
On a related note, I remain firmly convinced that my Tigers “jinxed” themselves against Oklahoma in the Big XII title game when they went monochrome… the Tigers wore their gold pants in their wins at Kansas and in the Cotton Bowl against Arkansas
Serves me right for “skipping” UniWatch Friday… only to find out I instigated the lead story! Great memories!
