New Year’s Resolution: Buy Socks for, Like, Everyone

b42d3868b757129fadf756dc32534a6a-getty-77679998cg008_chick_fil_a_b.jpg

It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of the bare-legged look in college football. But there’s bare-legged and then there’s really bare-legged, as demonstrated to nauseating effect yesterday by Wes Byrum, above. C’mon, dude, nobody wants to look at your ankles — it’s bad enough we have to see your calves. — Paul

she doesn’t need socks

/just sayin’
//happy new year everyone

That’s not Kodi Burns. That’s Wes Byrum, the Kicker that beat Florida earlier this year… twice!!

Are you sure that is Kodi Burns in the headline photo? (Looks like the kicker or punter) I think it is Kodi Burns in the reference photo.

xyz said:

Sorry, I took the name from the AP’s photo caption, which said it was Burns. Fixing it now!

Easy mistake to make if you’re just looking at a roster…Burns and Byrum have duplicate numbers.

Anywho, the look sure sucks. Bynum’s kicks were impressive…but how did he beat Florida twice?

I was at the Chick-fil-A Bowl last night, pretty close seats, and forgot about looking for the omnipresent bowl patch until…overtime! Auburn’s traditional striped uni certainly outclassed Clemson’s purple pants, but I wasn’t impressed by the behavior of the Auburn fans.

Paul, if you’ve never had a Chick-fil-A sandwich, you’re missing a slice of heaven.

i could see how one could confuse this #18 with this #18

I like the low black socks, but not THAT low!! I don’t like the socks up to the knee, thats whats wrong with the NFL.

Happy New Year, everyone!!

Arkansas to wear all red today in the cotton bowl and I think Missouri is wearing all gold

looks like the 08 line of nike system-of-dress tenniswear is out

He kicked the game winner, but Florida called timeout right before the ball was snapped. Then he lined up and did it again. He celebrated by running off the field at the Swamp by mocking the Gator Chomp (he’s a native Floridian).

I was wondering if Paul would like to comment on how this blight of unsightly shoulder patches started in the NHL. There doesn’t appear to be any good reason for them and they really take away from some uniforms. Columbus and Phoenix come to mind; examples of teams whose jerseys might look better without said patches.

On the contrary, I’ve always liked those worn by Chicago.

No surprises in the Outback Bowl. Tennessee in home orange, but back to the white pants with the stripes. Wisconsin in all white.

(Rant ON) As a long-time play-by-play broadcaster, “duplicate numbers” oughtta be outlawed!!! As is, they’re only permissible in NCAA football; which leads to abominations like this! The “dupes” aren’t allowed on the field at the same time, which is why running back Jimmy Jackson and safety William Moore both get to wear #1! If that weren’t bad enough, Jackson’s from Caruthersville, Missouri, while Moore’s from Hayti, Missouri… both Bootheel towns about 25 miles apart! Sheesh!

No other sport allows this… not MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, or any NCAA sport except football! C’mon, guys… you’ve got 100 different possibilities for uniform numbers (counting the use of 0 or 00)… there’s NO NEED for “dupes”! Heck, you could even use three-digit numbers like Japanese baseball does if you’ve got more than 100 players! (Rant OFF)

We now return you to your regular perusal of today’s bowl games… ;-)

If that’s the case, hopefully Pat Summerall will go off on the teams for not “getting it.”

let me ask a stupid question, as im only vaguely familiar with recruiting/walk on/redshirt etc. practices in NC2A…

would it be possible to actually keep the rosters down to say…99 players…or even a more manageable 75, so as not to need the double numbering?

i know this has been going on in college for some time (i remember back in the 70’s or 80’s when a classmate told me “nebraska’s got like 115 players” [he may or may not have been exaggerating])…when i asked him why, he said, “well, when nebraska is up 44-0, they put in the third string”

Don’t forget, outdoor NHL game today in Buffalo.

I’m not a Pens fan, but those powder blues are pretty sweet.

Nope, drunk Pat likes the all red for the Backs.

With all of the green and gold in the Sun Bowl yesterday, I thought Paul may have slipped in a subliminal sponsorship for the site.

I know they’ve been ripped ad nauseum, but Oregon looked simply ridiculous. They look straight out of a bad, low budget movie from the early nineties.

DI college teams can only have 85 on scholarship, but they have a number of walk-ons. Even with that, if you kept the rosters at just 99 players, you’d probably still have to duplicate some numbers due to numbering restrictions (which are much more relaxed, by neccessity, in college than in the NFL).

Couple that with the fact that many teams have retired numbers (at Auburn, 7, 34, and 88 are retired) and you can see the need to have duplicate numbers.

Columbus’ shoulder patch used to include a glow in the dark green bug, I think the Union army cap is a marked improvement. Something I noticed the other day is that all the Edge replicas have really cheap looking plastic shoulder patches, while only the authentics have actual patches. Makes me never want to buy one of the new replicas.

I was in the NHL Store in Manhattan yesterday. I saw a modern RBK Edge Kings jersey (Black/purple crown) with Gretzky’s name and number. Most disgusting thing ever, especially because his real throwback (the black/silver “Chevy” logo) was on the next rack…

Hogs in all red no gold for Mizzou as Paul and the Tigers hinted

i could swear i just saw Casey Dick, Quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks with C. Dick on his jersey………………………

(Brought forward from the other day, sorry – was offline for awhile. I blame alcohol.)

Not a great pic, but here’s Warren Moon in the ‘78 Rose Bowl. The Huskies hadn’t been for nearly 20 years, and did the single-rose patch… then they went a couple more times in the next few years, and added additional roses to the patch each time.

Paul sez:
I ran a column on Rose Bowl uni modifications about two years ago. A few of the photo links no longer work, but most of them are still good — look here.

You know, that may have been the column that first tweaked me to Uni Watch. I remember now because of this statement:

the rose bush is more commonly planted on the shoulders, a landscaping concept that appears to have been pioneered by Washington and Iowa in 1982.

Which, oddly enough, is refuted by the pic I posted of Moon :-) When I posted it on Sunday, I thought it might have been the first shoulder patch, but I had absolutely no reason other than homerism to think so. Now I wonder. Anyone know of shoulder patches in bowls prior to 1978?

I’ve noticed this too, and it pisses me off. My brother got a Nash replica for Christmas and not only are the shoulder patches that plastic crap, but the numbers are one piece with fake stiching holding the white to the red. It just bothers me that Reebok has raised the prices for crappier gear. I have the old alternate and all the patches are fully embroidered.

Is it possible to buy the real patches seperately and sew them on yourself? I don’t want to get a new jersey but have that stupid plastic crap on them.

Oh, I was a Penguins fan before the Jackets were dropped into my home town, and not only am I pumped for the Winter Classic, but I too think that those powder blues are absolutely wonderful. I read somewhere that Pittsburgh likes them so much there are going to ask the league for permission to make them their alternates next year.

Anybody notice the referee in the Cotton Bowl is wearing green shoes?

Brad said:

Thanks for bringing this up, since only yesterday I commented on the visual overload in the NHL and upbraided for it.

The shoulder patches are part of the problem, yes, but I still find the jersey designs, the color-coordinated goalie pads and the advertising on the side boards and the ice surface to be more egregious.

The patches work when they are part of the overall uniform design, as with the Blackhawks. But when they are added “just because there’s space on the shoulders” and can be changed every few seasons (or annually, if they’re honoring an event or anniversary), then they are not an integral part of the overall uniform design – they are just more visual clutter.

Reebok has a little table that elaborates on the differences between all the jerseys available and the old CCM replicas.

Notice at the bottom of the table, all jerseys get the fully embroidered Reebok logo treatment. Thank heavens for that, I wouldn’t want people to this my sweater was made by an actual hockey company, like CCM.

Let’s play the “Count the # of Under Armour logos” game.

give credit to the photographer of the 2nd pic….no Under Armour logos can be clearly seen. The chin skin has one, but only half can be seen.

yes i noticed that. It looks like they are stained badly or something.

And anyone notice pat summerall’s hands are purple.

Anyone see the Pregame thing on NBC with a little kid wearing a Crosby jersey skating on a pond? The jersey is a fake. The numbers are only two colors instead of three. It was one of the knockoffs you get off ebay that non hockey fans won’t notice the difference. But I did! Anyone get a screen grab of it?

Odd thing I just noticed-
Colby Armstrong, a RW for the Penguins, was just interviewed and his jersey/sweater had white chest laces (no screen shot); but, the store’s shop shows the jersey/sweater with blue chest laces
I imagine that the rest oft he team will have white laces too…What a lovely game this is by the way, both teams in retro looks, the snow falling down–awesome

I just flipped over to the Cotton Bowl, and wow-o-wow, does Arkansas look terrible in the maroon-over-maroon (or is it crimson-over-crimson?). It is a bad look no matter what, but the stripe-free pants and different shades between jersey and pants are ghastly.

This is off topic but somewhat uni related. CFL teams have locker room sales at the end of the season and sell off all kinds of random stuff, game used helmets, jerseys, and what not. One thing they have are the player’s name plates from their lockers. People fall all over themselves to get them, in particular certain players. I don’t really understand this. Does anyone have a collection of name plates? Do NFL and College teams do this? On a Winter Classic note these guys are wearing a lot of underneath gear prompting my dad to say, “when I was a kid we had to get changed outdoors where we were playing and didn’t have any of this gear.” Made me chuckle!

Not a hockey fan any longer really,—but those Pens blue jerseys are cool.

And those old Sabres jerseys remind me of my old Cincinnati Swords.

PS wouldnt it be great if someone plastered Costas with a snowball?

Looks like there will be a couple players wearing eye black today for the Penguins-Sabres game…

One of the Pens goalies, #30-something, isn’t wearing all-brown pads, it is black with gold swirls, maybe his regular pads…

Ales Kotalik is wearing the eye black. Probably some more players, too.

Holy crap these have got to be the worst looking thing I have ever seen. What coach would actually put their players in these???

Does anyone have specifics on why a certain player in college football would get his own number, as opposed to having to share a number? It certainly seems like having sole possession of a number could be seen as a mark of honor, seniority, or being a top player.

What is this guy singing?

This is a beautiful looking game, those old Sabres uniforms are amazing, and the Pens look great too. I love the eye black as well. I think the NHL has really done a great job with this.

Arkansas looks bad. Mizzou looks decent, although white with gold is to much brightness. Go with the black pnats, guys. I actually like the low/no sock look. I think it’s much better than the NFL

Florida’s jerseys in the Capital One Bowl with the SEC 75th Anny patch, the Capital One bowl patch and the gator head patch is waaayyyy too much.

No buffaslugs! Snow flurries! Huge crowd! If only the NHL didn’t put this game up against one of the biggest College Football game days of the year!

This game just looks like hockey should…especially the goalies wearing the snow caps over their masks!

Ryan Miller (Buffalo goalie) has on a beanie

Ryan Miller (Buffalo goalie) has on a beanie, while the Pittsburgh goalie does not

Being a baseball guy, I generally despise winter. But watching the Pens-Sabres game makes the cold look tolerable.

One observation – I haven’t seen the behind the goal nets that are required in arenas. Is this likely because of the distance between the fans and the rink?

correction: they ARE waaayyyy to much. Sorry, I’m hungover.

It’s kind of hard to put up the protective mesh when there isn’t a ceiling to hang it from.

Florida’s all blue is bad. I wish they’d wear the orange pants.

I’ve never noticed the yellow piping around the Michigan jersey. Do they have the same piping on the blue jerseys? If they do, it isn’t yellow, is it?

Those Penguins sweaters don’t appear to be powder blue. They look teal, like the San Jose Sharks’ unis.

I would think that with the liability risk, they’d find a way to put something up if they felt that there was serious chance of someone getting fuckfaced puckfaced.

Well, the game will be over (or almost over) before the two BCS games are played, so they really are competing against second tier games.

Hopefully, the winter spectacle of the whole thing will draw some extra viewers to the game.

Michigan vs Florida may not be a BCS game, but the ratings are expected to be HUGE…Both UF and UM draw a lot of ratings nationwide from their fanbase…I expect that game to quadruple what the NHL game will draw…

However, this game is MUCH prettier…especially in the sock department…

I don’t know what i like best, outdoor NHL in the snow, the AMAZING throwbacks, or the toques.

Something doesn’t sit right with me about Florida’s all blue though. Is it darker than the blue from the late 90’s. I remember really liking the all blue then. And even though I’m an Ohio guy, I’ve got to admit that UM’s unis are just classy.

Zamboni in mid period?

Also interesting seeing all the support equipment just sitting out in the open…Zambonis, spare/practice nets, shovels, etc.

Back to Uni-Related: I like that the Buffalo coaches/trainers/support personel are wearing the retro logo’d gear and not the buffaslug, I hate when a team goes throwback but the sidelines are covered in the new gear…

The rink, although regulation size, appears smaller with no crowd surrounding it.

Somebody has got to get the screen they just zoomed in on the top of the “beanie” and its tagged with the goalies name, number, and date…I guess for historical purposes…

The Sabers’ goalie looks like he is wearing a sock on his mask. Great looking game though.

I was looking at a collection of old NASL (yes, soccer) jerseys, and noticed something I hadn’t seen before. For part of the life of the Washington Diplomats (right before Cruyff came, I think), the “Dips” logo on the front of their shirt had the I dotted with an adidas logo.
Here’s some pictures.
So, I was wondering, are there other places where a corporate logo has been made part of the mark of a team? I guess either in a picture logo or in a wordmark. Have we covered this somewhere already?

I was hoping one of the goalies would have a toque complete with puff ball, but we can’t have everything! The mesh behind the glass was put up after a little girl was killed at an NHL game a few years ago. However, the space between the boards and the stands is pretty huge. Ty Conklin has now played in both outdoor NHL games and not worn a toque in either.

Not a joke. Go to any mall food court (or restaurant) on a Sunday and there will be a big sign explaining why it’s closed.

Nebraska in its ‘men’s football’ era (pre-2004) regularly suited up over 120 players for home games because of its aggressive walk-on program. That said, there is no reason that players on the two-deep need to have duplicate numbers.

Has anyone noticed if the “Amp” logo has made its way onto the jersey’s Winter Classic logo?

The sheer beauty of this game is helping me feel not so hungover.

It is definitely a sock, just like the one all the sabres are wearing. Look at the end, you can see the little hemmed elastic part at the bottom.

Arkansas wore a small razorback in the middle of their helmet on the back with the initials “JFB” in honor of outgoing AD Frank Broyles. They also wore all red in his honor today.

Has anybody else noticed that some of the Revolution helmets being worn by the Michigan players have a spot to inflate the front pad right above the nose bumper while some do not? It’s not a beanie or a ski cap. It’s definitely a hockey sock (which is almost a legwarmer so that shin pads will fit under it). There is a company that turns the same material that turns socks into hats. They make lots of college teams, but I imagine that a professional hockey player could certainly have one custom made for an event such as this.

Not Uni-Related (Even though the Throwbacks look amazing) But it’s the third period in Buffalo and Heavy snow is falling.

Uni-wise, at the bowl game Chick-fil-A dressed their cows in realy authenic Clemson and Auburn jerseys, complete with piping and stripes. The Clemson cows wore # 28 for the star RB and danced on the correct Clemson side. Didn’t see what number the Auburn cows wore.

I still say the sockless Auburn kicker only beat Florida once.

Has anyone noticed if the “Amp” logo has made its way onto the jersey’s Winter Classic logo?

They are making up for it by their logo being on what seems like every other dasher board.

I noticed this too, I’ve been listening for them to confirm that this is a sock. It really looks like a sock to me, which if true, has got to be the uni-story of the year.

Are you guys joking? It’s a ski hat/beanie!

It is definitely a sock, just like the one all the sabres are wearing. Look at the end, you can see the little hemmed elastic part at the bottom.

Speaking of goalies, Ty Conklin’s mask (Penguins) looks specially painted for today’s game. It’s light blue all over with dark blue & white stipes down the middle (like a football helmet). It also has the retro Penguins logo on the side as well as small snowflakes all over it. IMO, it looks prety cool.

The Gators’ kicker #98 is also wearing the ‘no show’ socks in the capital one bowl…looks pretty bad

What do we have, five old logos on there?
Calgary, San Jose, Columbus, Boston and Tampa Bay.

Sugar Bowl pregame radio show here in Athens just mentioned a rumor that Georgia may go all black tonight. No silver britches or red helmet. Just a rumor that is apparently unsubstantiated, and they were none too pleased just like me (they complained we’d look more like Texas Tech than UGA). I was worried about something just like this when they introduced the black, but we shall wait and see I guess.

Second thing I’ve noticed, after catching only a couple of glimpses, it looks like Percy Harvin from Florida might be wearing black and orange argyle socks. Has anybody else noticed this? Again, I can only get quick glimpses.

Oh you did my friend. Thats the background on my cellphone. His brother/counsin also is on the team with his first initial and Dick on the jersey.

I love the retro jerseys and the eye black in the Winter Classic but i thought we were promised old school goalie pads. Conklin’s black and yellow pads look terrible with the powder blue uni. At least Miller’s pads match the color scheme of the jersey.

I noticed that. Again, from the quick glances I think he’s actually wearing Nike elbow sleeves around his ankles

After a while, all Cotton Bowl refs and most of the players had green shoes and green stains on their jerseys. It certainly appears that they had to spray-paint parts of the field to get green grass on New Year’s day.

This one’s totally off-topic, but it’s been something that I’ve been looking for for a decade or two.

I heard that there used to be a semi-pro softball or baseball team in New Mexico called the Los Alamos Bombers, and I would love to get a cap (even if it’s a recreation).

Anybody out there have any advice on finding what their font/logo would’ve been?

Has anybody else noticed that some of the Revolution helmets being worn by the Michigan players have a spot to inflate the front pad right above the nose bumper while some do not? I wore a Revo in college (as did many of my teammates) and I’ve never noticed this before. In fact, I’ve got my Revo from my senior year (last year) and it doesn’t have that feature. What’s up with this? Can anybody explain?

Where’d you play, EHC?

Conklin was a recently recalled from the AHL. Because of this they were only able to get a mask ready for the game and not pads.

It was interesting that Conklin on his mask had the skating penguin with the scarf, which was different from the skating penguin on the jerseys.

anyone else notice that the Illini cheerleader uniforms look like basketball uniforms? and the USC cheerleaders wearing their special rose bowl sweaters or whatever you want to call them.

I think goalies should be required to wear the toques in all outdoor games. Jose Theodore was spot on with that gag the first time the NHL did the outdoor thing. It’s incredibly endearing. I DVRed the game for when I was at work, and those snowflakes on Conklin’s helmet are AWESOME whenever there’s a shot of the snow falling around him. Logistically and financially, it would be difficult to do this kind of thing more often, but outdoor hockey is fantastic. And those Penguins uniforms, as was mentioned earlier, are GREAT.

Pens/Sabres retro jerseys… a thing of beauty.

Anyone know why Keith Rivers (#55) of USC has a 10 on the back of his helmet? From the looks of it, there aren’t any other USC players with numbers on the backs of their helmets.

Funny, I just logged on to point this out about USC. Why do both John David Booty and Brian Cushing wear #10? The worst thing is that they’re both starters – at least they don’t play on the same side of the ball, but still. Why is this?

Andy Dick would go on talk shows and say “This is the sign my limo driver held up at the airport”

The sign read “A DICK”

Didn’t see this mentioned yet, so I’m going to throw it out there for discussion…

How ridiculous did Florida look w/ the barrage of patches on their chests? They had the Gator logo, the SEC 75th anniversary logo, the outback bowl logo, the nike swoosh and some orange football (dead center) on their fronts… My dad said they looked like Nascars

It was interesting that Conklin on his mask had the skating penguin with the scarf, which was different from the skating penguin on the jerseys.

The logo on the mask was from 1967-68. The next year, they changed to the logo on today’s jerseys (albeit with slightly different lettering).

Something I noticed the other day is that all the Edge replicas have really cheap looking plastic shoulder patches, while only the authentics have actual patches. Makes me never want to buy one of the new replicas.

At least Reebok gets the Blackhawk shoulder patch correct on the replicas(the “C” should have a serif). Go to, among other places, the Blackhawk website and you’ll see them use a sans serif “C”, which is incorrect.

I think Ryan Miller is going to sell his helmet with hockey sock hat on it to charity.

Also back up goalie for the Dallas Stars is going to sell this helmet:

Iowa State University has a garage sale type thing every year at one of the home football games. They sell old jerseys, clothing, I think even equipment, from all the sports. However, I don’t think they can sell anything with a current player’s name on it, since NCAA rules prevent schools from making any merchandising money off of a current player.

Did anybody else catch the eye black in the Winter Classic? Paul brought up the eye black the other day, and happened to catch a glimpse of it in the game. I did a little searching and came up with the picture. It was being worn by #37 Michael Ryan of the Sabres.

I hate myself. How do i do links?

If a team is gonna do white jersey over a color pant, then the uni number should be darker than the pants – like this
this as opposed to this or this. Ok, maybe the Texans uniform wasn’t too bad…..but this of course is RIDICULOUS!!

I saw at least three players with eye black. One of them was Spacek on the Sabres. I just read that Ryan Miller was going to wear three different toques, one with the Sabres logo (which I saw), one with the winter classic logo, and one for a local charity. I didn’t notice the last two during the game, but the Pens didn’t have a shot in the second period so it’s possible the cameras didn’t get a good shot of Miller the whole time. Last year, my HS team played in the state championship game in Memorial Stadium the week after Missouri played the Huskers. We got the visitor’s locker room, and every name card was gone except for one—Chase Daniel. And this was before Chase Daniel was Chase Daniel. I should have kept it.

And we also found an Independence Bowl championship ring.

I agree, but only because I know that All Blacks knows the story behind the motions. I’m not saying that the UH players don’t, I just don’t know that they know. Matter of fact, I’m pretty sure that Jones wouldn’t let the players oerform the haka without making sure that every single player learned the deeper meaning.

Then I guess I shouldn’t be worried about the sideline/champion caps being worn sideways or the gloves being worn without the wrist straps closed.

It’s a shame that Hawaii didn’t go with the silver pants — the “tribal” tattoo band on the thigh stands out and works well with the helmet. Nice to see June Jones with the lei on the road — maybe Les Miles should go with Mardi Gras beads at the Fiesta Bowl.

Has Hawaii worn generic white pants at all this year? I’m guessing there is more to this. Here is one theory: they brought the black pants as the road team and maybe had to switch to whites with Georgia wearing black jerseys??

The bottom line is that you shouldn’t be a friggin slob. Respect the game, the team and the uniform. Tuck in your shirt, pull up your socks and make it a uniform – by definition, it’s the same as the rest of your team. Let your individuality show through your performance not your rebellious socks. Show some class and if you have to make a fashion statement, go play tennis!

I’m amazed more airlines don’t to that. Now that I think about it, it should be an FAA regulation.

It’s pretty, very pretty.

If that doesn’t work, use old copy/paste on this:

This is a good looking Oregon uniform. I mean really good looking. Bad player. Good uniform.

Put me on the “College Football Teams need full length socks” list. I can never fully appreciate uniforms in College…it always seems like there’s something missing.

A bit much don’t you think?

Are the Wizards still wearing these atrocities?

Or the Kings F*** UGLY things?

airlines have been using anti-glare paint for sometime now, although it’s obviously not industry standard…might be due to the fact that, unlike athletes, the pilots are already behind shatterproof, bulletproof, uv protected anti-glare glass

It’s a modified Haka. Made up of traditional hawaiian dance movements. They did a story on it on Gameday this Morning. They used to do the traditional Maori Haka occasionally, but then they made one that was unique to their football team.

I love the Wizards third jersey. I like black and gold combo way better then their usual.

Of course, unlike athletes, they are directly responsible for the lives of other people, but I know what you’re saying. It would at least be a good idea to require it for planes painted bright colors (white, chrome, certain yellows).

two questions re: pride stickers…

one…has UH worn the silver helmets before, and if not, does the EM (or the player) have to affix like every sticker the player has accumulated throughout the season just for this one game? i thought part of the ‘fun’ of the pride sticker was to accumulate them on one helmet as the season progressed; and,

two…UGA keeps the jerseys…do they keep the helmets too and if so, do they get to add new breathe-right strips for their play in the sugar or do they just keep the helmets, as is?

/any UGA fans wearing blackface tonight?

yes, they have worn the helmets. georgia’s players doesn’t just get the jerseys from the game; they get the opportunity to buy them, which they always do. and, they don’t get to keep the helmets. Incidentally, I, too, am not a fan of the “breathe-right”/dog bone pride sticker look.

If you want to go down that road you could include Rae Carruth, as well as a certain Heisman Trophy winner with a citrus nickname.

Is it me, or did it seem like the stripes on many of the Florida players pants during the Capital One Bowl were not aligned properly, like they were set too far back?

Once I first noticed it, I was distracted throughout the entire game.

I’m having a hell of a time linking to it right now for some reason, but there’s a photo gallery in the sports section of the Detroit Free Press’ website, http://www.freep.com to look for yourself.

I was at the Winter Classic game. A couple thoughts…

The RBK Edge cut on the Sabres throwbacks looks horrible. The yellow around the shoulder blue is too thin- almost like piping. The shoulder blue is too large. And the worst is the bottom curved hem which looks terrible with horizontal bottom stripes. On a white jersey it gives the diaper look in the back.

On pics 11 and 13 in that gallery you can see the Sabres regular pants peeking out under the retro pants. Last year when they wore the blue retros they wore the regular, mismatched, pants.

I noticed that too. Like they were running down the back of the leg. Very odd.

I hope they never wore that

Um, the link shows a photo him wearing that in a game. And it says it’s from his rookie season.

Might want to read before you post…

I’m saying I have never seen it before and wanted to share it here, I wasn’t asking the story behind it. You might want to heed your own advice and read before typing, dickhead

Just to clarify, not to insult:

My comment was directed at the person who said “I hope they never wore that”, when it was clearly evident by the link that it was worn.

It was not directed to person who made the original post, because it seemed pretty obvious you hadn’t seen it before.

Then the person whose comment it directed to said “oops, my bad”, and it seemed kind of funny at that point.

Just showed UGA, the bulldog mascot. He’s got a swoosh on his sweater. Awesome. I know it’s basically impossible at this point to keep logos off jerseys, but can’t they at least stay away from the mascots?

These sound like what you are looking for. We saw one of these Sunday at Texans game. My sons thought it was pretty sharp looking.

It’s called the Reebok Men’s Conflict sweatshirt. They’re pretty cool. At the beginning of the season I found them in the team shop on the Browns website. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they are still up on there and I could only find a Bungles jacket on clearance. Good luck trying to hunt one down!!

Those conflict hoodies are sold out everywhere.

Methinks the “retro” Penguins had the current font in corresponding colors. A bit odd, but it looked all right.

Anyone else think Georgia’s helmets would look better with a black outline of the middle white stripe added to it?

The truth shall set you free. Not only was the original post the Post Of The Day winner, but James David Ryan disliked the “Chuck and Duck” offense. He was everyone’s Buddy in Philly in the late 1980’s.

Being a baseball guy, I generally despise winter. But watching the Pens-Sabres game makes the cold look tolerable.

One observation – I haven’t seen the behind the goal nets that are required in arenas. Is this likely because of the distance between the fans and the rink?

It’s kind of hard to put up the protective mesh when there isn’t a ceiling to hang it from.

it was a distance thing not a no roof thing, the heritage classic in ‘03 has a net behind 1 end only because they put temp stands on one end. They just used 7 poles to hold it up.
