It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of the bare-legged look in college football. But there’s bare-legged and then there’s really bare-legged, as demonstrated to nauseating effect yesterday by Wes Byrum, above. C’mon, dude, nobody wants to look at your ankles — it’s bad enough we have to see your calves. — Paul

Anywho, the look sure sucks. Bynum’s kicks were impressive…but how did he beat Florida twice?
I was at the Chick-fil-A Bowl last night, pretty close seats, and forgot about looking for the omnipresent bowl patch until…overtime! Auburn’s traditional striped uni certainly outclassed Clemson’s purple pants, but I wasn’t impressed by the behavior of the Auburn fans.

I was wondering if Paul would like to comment on how this blight of unsightly shoulder patches started in the NHL. There doesn’t appear to be any good reason for them and they really take away from some uniforms. Columbus and Phoenix come to mind; examples of teams whose jerseys might look better without said patches.
On the contrary, I’ve always liked those worn by Chicago.

(Rant ON) As a long-time play-by-play broadcaster, “duplicate numbers” oughtta be outlawed!!! As is, they’re only permissible in NCAA football; which leads to abominations like this! The “dupes” aren’t allowed on the field at the same time, which is why running back Jimmy Jackson and safety William Moore both get to wear #1! If that weren’t bad enough, Jackson’s from Caruthersville, Missouri, while Moore’s from Hayti, Missouri… both Bootheel towns about 25 miles apart! Sheesh!
No other sport allows this… not MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, or any NCAA sport except football! C’mon, guys… you’ve got 100 different possibilities for uniform numbers (counting the use of 0 or 00)… there’s NO NEED for “dupes”! Heck, you could even use three-digit numbers like Japanese baseball does if you’ve got more than 100 players! (Rant OFF)

let me ask a stupid question, as im only vaguely familiar with recruiting/walk on/redshirt etc. practices in NC2A…
would it be possible to actually keep the rosters down to say…99 players…or even a more manageable 75, so as not to need the double numbering?
i know this has been going on in college for some time (i remember back in the 70’s or 80’s when a classmate told me “nebraska’s got like 115 players” [he may or may not have been exaggerating])…when i asked him why, he said, “well, when nebraska is up 44-0, they put in the third string”

I know they’ve been ripped ad nauseum, but Oregon looked simply ridiculous. They look straight out of a bad, low budget movie from the early nineties.

DI college teams can only have 85 on scholarship, but they have a number of walk-ons. Even with that, if you kept the rosters at just 99 players, you’d probably still have to duplicate some numbers due to numbering restrictions (which are much more relaxed, by neccessity, in college than in the NFL).
Couple that with the fact that many teams have retired numbers (at Auburn, 7, 34, and 88 are retired) and you can see the need to have duplicate numbers.

(Brought forward from the other day, sorry – was offline for awhile. I blame alcohol.)
Not a great pic, but here’s Warren Moon in the ‘78 Rose Bowl. The Huskies hadn’t been for nearly 20 years, and did the single-rose patch… then they went a couple more times in the next few years, and added additional roses to the patch each time.
Paul sez:
I ran a column on Rose Bowl uni modifications about two years ago. A few of the photo links no longer work, but most of them are still good — look here.
You know, that may have been the column that first tweaked me to Uni Watch. I remember now because of this statement:
the rose bush is more commonly planted on the shoulders, a landscaping concept that appears to have been pioneered by Washington and Iowa in 1982.
Which, oddly enough, is refuted by the pic I posted of Moon :-) When I posted it on Sunday, I thought it might have been the first shoulder patch, but I had absolutely no reason other than homerism to think so. Now I wonder. Anyone know of shoulder patches in bowls prior to 1978?

Thanks for bringing this up, since only yesterday I commented on the visual overload in the NHL and upbraided for it.
The shoulder patches are part of the problem, yes, but I still find the jersey designs, the color-coordinated goalie pads and the advertising on the side boards and the ice surface to be more egregious.
The patches work when they are part of the overall uniform design, as with the Blackhawks. But when they are added “just because there’s space on the shoulders” and can be changed every few seasons (or annually, if they’re honoring an event or anniversary), then they are not an integral part of the overall uniform design – they are just more visual clutter.

This is off topic but somewhat uni related. CFL teams have locker room sales at the end of the season and sell off all kinds of random stuff, game used helmets, jerseys, and what not. One thing they have are the player’s name plates from their lockers. People fall all over themselves to get them, in particular certain players. I don’t really understand this. Does anyone have a collection of name plates? Do NFL and College teams do this? On a Winter Classic note these guys are wearing a lot of underneath gear prompting my dad to say, “when I was a kid we had to get changed outdoors where we were playing and didn’t have any of this gear.” Made me chuckle!

Sugar Bowl pregame radio show here in Athens just mentioned a rumor that Georgia may go all black tonight. No silver britches or red helmet. Just a rumor that is apparently unsubstantiated, and they were none too pleased just like me (they complained we’d look more like Texas Tech than UGA). I was worried about something just like this when they introduced the black, but we shall wait and see I guess.

After a while, all Cotton Bowl refs and most of the players had green shoes and green stains on their jerseys. It certainly appears that they had to spray-paint parts of the field to get green grass on New Year’s day.

This one’s totally off-topic, but it’s been something that I’ve been looking for for a decade or two.
I heard that there used to be a semi-pro softball or baseball team in New Mexico called the Los Alamos Bombers, and I would love to get a cap (even if it’s a recreation).
Anybody out there have any advice on finding what their font/logo would’ve been?

Has anybody else noticed that some of the Revolution helmets being worn by the Michigan players have a spot to inflate the front pad right above the nose bumper while some do not? I think goalies should be required to wear the toques in all outdoor games. Jose Theodore was spot on with that gag the first time the NHL did the outdoor thing. It’s incredibly endearing. I DVRed the game for when I was at work, and those snowflakes on Conklin’s helmet are AWESOME whenever there’s a shot of the snow falling around him. Logistically and financially, it would be difficult to do this kind of thing more often, but outdoor hockey is fantastic. And those Penguins uniforms, as was mentioned earlier, are GREAT.

Something I noticed the other day is that all the Edge replicas have really cheap looking plastic shoulder patches, while only the authentics have actual patches. Makes me never want to buy one of the new replicas.
At least Reebok gets the Blackhawk shoulder patch correct on the replicas(the “C” should have a serif). Go to, among other places, the Blackhawk website and you’ll see them use a sans serif “C”, which is incorrect.

I saw at least three players with eye black. One of them was Spacek on the Sabres. I just read that Ryan Miller was going to wear three different toques, one with the Sabres logo (which I saw), one with the winter classic logo, and one for a local charity. I didn’t notice the last two during the game, but the Pens didn’t have a shot in the second period so it’s possible the cameras didn’t get a good shot of Miller the whole time. Does anyone think that in 30 years if they play a game like this again that the Sabres will pull out the slug as a retro jersey and people will get all nostalgic?

I was at the Winter Classic game. A couple thoughts…
The RBK Edge cut on the Sabres throwbacks looks horrible. The yellow around the shoulder blue is too thin- almost like piping. The shoulder blue is too large. And the worst is the bottom curved hem which looks terrible with horizontal bottom stripes. On a white jersey it gives the diaper look in the back.
On pics 11 and 13 in that gallery you can see the Sabres regular pants peeking out under the retro pants. Last year when they wore the blue retros they wore the regular, mismatched, pants.

Just to clarify, not to insult:
My comment was directed at the person who said “I hope they never wore that”, when it was clearly evident by the link that it was worn.
It was not directed to person who made the original post, because it seemed pretty obvious you hadn’t seen it before.
Then the person whose comment it directed to said “oops, my bad”, and it seemed kind of funny at that point.

Just showed UGA, the bulldog mascot. He’s got a swoosh on his sweater. Awesome. I know it’s basically impossible at this point to keep logos off jerseys, but can’t they at least stay away from the mascots?

These sound like what you are looking for. We saw one of these Sunday at Texans game. My sons thought it was pretty sharp looking.

It’s called the Reebok Men’s Conflict sweatshirt. They’re pretty cool. At the beginning of the season I found them in the team shop on the Browns website. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they are still up on there and I could only find a Bungles jacket on clearance. Good luck trying to hunt one down!!

Methinks the “retro” Penguins had the current font in corresponding colors. A bit odd, but it looked all right.

Anyone else think Georgia’s helmets would look better with a black outline of the middle white stripe added to it?

The truth shall set you free. Not only was the original post the Post Of The Day winner, but James David Ryan disliked the “Chuck and Duck” offense. He was everyone’s Buddy in Philly in the late 1980’s.

it was a distance thing not a no roof thing, the heritage classic in ‘03 has a net behind 1 end only because they put temp stands on one end. They just used 7 poles to hold it up.
