As a football official I can state that knickers are not comfortable for everyone. I have very large calfs and thighs. (No, I'm not fat.) It's very hard for me to buy knickers that aren't tight. I also have a hard time getting socks that will stretch over my calfs without cutting off my circulation. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way about the knickers.

The new pants offer options in cold weather. I can't layer much under a pair of knickers. The pants would allow me a lot more layering options in cold, wet, and windy games. Frankly I don't care how they look, I just know they would be a whole lot more comfortable for me than knickers. I hope they pants are adopted in all levels of football.

At New Mexico, Stony Case was carrying on his high school number from the famous Odessa Permian team.

Permian, the original Friday Night Lights team, has (or at least had) assigned its QBs numbers in the 20s for years and years.

Japan does break itself into different regions, the big two population regions are called the Kantoh (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka). The pictograph (kanji) for the second character is East (toh) and West (sai). So translated it would be the West Gate (Kansai) and the East Gate (Kantoh).

Draw a line for 550 miles WSW from Tokyo and you reach Fukuoka, and draw line 500 miles north to Sapporo and you have Japan in a nutshell. Japan is a big J with Tokyo as the elbow. West of Tokyo, essentially to Japanese means west and anything with Tokyo and north of Tokyo means east.

Sumo wrestling has rankings based on east and west, the east wrestlers are considered the better of similar wrestlers (based on the record from the previous tournament). Yet, with this has nothing to do with geography at the present (historically yes) because wrestlers come from all over Japan and the majority of sumo stables are in the Tokyo area. Go figure.

Here is a map of the JBL West and East teams
JBL has 8 teams in a single division setup

BJ-League has 10 teams in a 2 conference, East and West setup. Hence, these teams are just representing their conference like we have here with the NBA.

The Eastern and Western League of minor league baseball in Japan were split with all of the 12 teams in the Pacific League and Central Leagues. There were six teams in the Tokyo area, (Seibu, Yomiuri, Yakult, Chiba, Yokohama and Nippon Ham (have since moved to Hokkaido) hence called the Eastern League, prior to the Rakuten Tohoku Golden Eagles existing. And there were six teams in the Western League, Hanshin, Softbank, Orix, Kintetsu, Chunichi and Hiroshima. After Orix and Kintetsu merged, there are only five teams in the Western League.

Nice to see that Ken will be playing for the West in the JBL all-star game.

We've got Shaq, Kobe, and LeBron. The JBL has...Ken.
Wouldn't that be a last name in Japan? And not a first name?

We have O'Neal, Bryant and James. They have Ken. Might be a last name.

And Japan is a narrow island, but it runs kinda East/West. And their leagues aren't divided East/West, they're the Central League and the Pacific League, and as you can see from this map they're fairly evenly distributed on the island (red are Central League teams, blue are Pacific League teams).
I'm thinking the original poster stumbled upon the Central and Pacific League's minor league the Eastern and Western Leagues. I am not sure why they made the divide that way, but I'm sure it was simply a way to group the teams. Much like the way the Pacific Coast League now includes New Orleans, the names Eastern and Western are simply names.

No, a keep your hands warm pocket.

Odd, I know, for a team from Florida. But the player in question had surgeon's hands.

Still does, actually. He's a surgeon now.
