When trolling for pictures last night, I stumbled upon this one, from an AP preview package before the annual Army-Navy game earlier this month. Both teams have historically distinct uniforms, making it a good-looking game … uniform-wise, at least.
And then I looked at the calendar and noticed it was the last Friday before Christmas. In my hometown in Iowa, the last Friday before Christmas means the annual game against the crosstown high school (the Catholic kids beat the public-school kids last night — 65-56). It was a good-looking rivalry in my high school days because dazzle nylon wasn’t the industry standard yet. And those damn Nike shoulder-horn things were years away. Although one year the Catholic kids wore a color intended to be gold. Think dark-pee-brownish. Yuck.
By this point, my brain was percolating at levels not seen since at least Monday or Tuesday. So I started thinking about other good-looking rivalries in all of the major sports. And yes, I did notice the Lakers’ old-school unis — that’s why they’re my NBA selection, up against the Celtics. I chose Bears/Packers in the NFL, any Original Six team against another in the NHL, and the Dodgers and Giants in MLB.
This list could go on and on, but it won’t — I’m sleepy now. So even though it’s Saturday, fire up the brain and see what happens on your end. Please, no Dale Earnhardt vs. Jeff Gordon (Rainbow Warriors era) matchups. — Bryan

OK, I’ll play:
Chiefs-Raiders, an AFC (and AFL) rivalry that features a couple of classic and longstanding looks. I don’t care which team is home it looks good. If I had to chose I’d go with Chiefs in red, Raiders white.
Yankees-Dodgers. Maybe not a rivalry like some others because they only meet on rare occasions but when they do it is another meeting of classic unchanged looks. I’ll take Dodgers home and Yanks in gray. The Yankees’ flannel unadorned grays are a favorite.
USC-Notre Dame. I like the Notre Dame (and Navy for that matter) blue with gold and USC has a color combo that I think is unique and distinctive. I prefer their road unis.
and finally: Black Hawks in white versus anyone, particularly an Original 6 team. Chicago’s white sweater is the best uni element ever IMO. Put them on ice against the Leafs or Habs… perfection.

Al, I know you were asking Bryan, but this is one of the few things in HS sports I really have an opinion on. I know why the Dioceses did it, and I hate them for it. They’re using their high profile schools as vehicles for PR repair after the recent scandals within the Church itself. They feel that by adding “Catholic” to the end of their names, they’re somehow more Catholic, and therefore more pure, than before they added that one word. Of course, Heelan went one step further by going from SC Heelan to SC Bishop Heelan Catholic.
OK, that felt good to get off my chest. Merry Christmas y’all.

And we have friends in Carroll, too. And Cedar Rapids. As for the AP notations … I think they’re lame most of the time. For schools like Dowling and Heelan and Kuemper, I’m OK with the city name first, because that tells you where they are. In town, like in Des Moines, I’d call them Dowling Catholic or whatever they would like to be.
I think most papers develop their own styles for schools near their coverage area. I used to work in Waterloo, and I made it a point to lose the lame AP names on all of our schools. Tama South Tama? Huh? It’s just South Tama. The Tama (county) tells you where it is. New Sharon North Mahaska? Lame. Or what about Story City Roland-Story?

It’s wonderful seeing all these Iowa people represented. Speaking from here in the Quad Cities, I must say that I only ever see the Catholic school referred to as Assumption, and quite frankly, if you can’t figure out that that’s Catholic, you’ve been buried in a hole all your life. I every once in awhile see them referred to as Davenport Assumption, but that’s only by out of town papers and the like.

Interesting. Growing up and attending Catholic high school in central Illinois, I note that while Bloomington, IL’s Catholic high schoolhad the word ‘Catholic’ in it in the mid 80s, neither Kankakee Bishop McNamara, Peru St Bede, or my alma mater Ottawa Marquette used ‘Catholic’.
Checking their websites now, Marquette and St Bede still don’t. According to Bishop Mac’s website, however, they are Bishop McNamara Catholic High School. (I never did like Bishop Mac, anyway; they spoiled our almost-undefeated season in 1984, and on Homecoming, yet.)

I’m assuming from the way you say it that the name of the school itself is Bloomington Catholic, like we have schools around here named Pella Christian or Grandview Park Baptist. Also, in response to the question about city names, we usually put the city name for all schools the first time we mention them, both in Dubuque and away. If space keeps us from mentioning a city name, we try to eliminate the local town because more readers know a Wahlert or Hempstead more than a East or West.

I was at the Michigan-UCLA game and yes, Deshawn Sims’ shorts were on backwords to start the game, but when he first went out he switched them around. Two of the bench players for UCLA had the shoes with the championship banner on the inside heal. The entire Michigan team wore black shoes with black socks instead of the normal blue and white shoes they have been wearing at home. Noticed something weird for the first time, From the armpit to the bottom of the shorts there is a different material than the rest of the jersey. Shinier and smoother. I will try and find pictures later.

Any red vs blue/black or green can work. The Red Wings and Rangers played a preseason game in dark jerseys (sweaters) some years ago and it was great. Why can’t USC and Illinois go dark for the Rose Bowl?
And why couldn’t have the Celtics and Bulls played in their green and red jerseys yesterday, four days before Christmas?

It’s gotta be Pitt/Penn State back in the day.
As a kid, I always thought it was a classic battle: Pure, unadorned, simplicity versus gaudy stripes and helmet stickers. All on played on a background of raunchy-colored astroturf at Pitt Staduim.

Cubs-Cards is always pretty classic, as is Yanks-Sox. I think I’d put any NFC Central (or is it called the NFC North these days? I forget..I’m from Detroit) matchup in there as well. Just as long as the Lions aren’t wearing black and the Vikings aren’t wearing purple on purple.

If you look at the IHSAA documents, you’ll see the CR area schools listed as follows:
Cedar Rapids, Jefferson
Cedar Rapids, Kennedy
Cedar Rapids, Washington
Prairie, Cedar Rapids
Xavier, Cedar Rapids
Linn-Mar, Marion
When the school is part of a community school district (Jefferson, Kennedy, and Washington) the district is listed first, but when the school is private (Xavier and Prairie), the school name is listed before the location. When it is a consolidated district (Linn-Mar), then the school district name is listed before the school’s location.
You may ask yourself, “Why does any of this matter?” Well, just about every sport in the state with some form of playoff system uses alphabetical order as a final tiebreaker. For instance, when it comes to seeding districts in basketball, the tiebreakers are head-to-head, Strength of Victory based on a points system, and alphabetical order. The Association flips the order each year, so if this year’s tiebreaker is First Alphabetical, next year will be Last Alphabetical.
If the above schools were put into a First Alphabetical tiebreaker, here’s how the seeding would go:
Cedar Rapids, Jefferson
Cedar Rapids, Kennedy
Cedar Rapids, Washington
Linn-Mar, Marion
Prairie, Cedar Rapids
Xavier, Cedar Rapids
Up until a few years ago every school was listed with town name first, but the state felt for whatever reason that listing school name was better.

2009 will be the 50th Anniversary season of the AFL. We may yet see a game where the Jets, dressed as the 1960 Titans, face the Titans, dressed as the 1960 Oilers.
I’m hoping to see all the 1960 uniforms; brown and gold with vertical-striped socks on the Broncos, black helmets and gold trim on the Raiders, silver helmets on the Bills, blue bolts and block numbers on the Chargers helmets, Texas on the Chiefs helmets, three-point hats and numbers on the Patriots helmets.

For some reason, I’d love to see those Broncos throwbacks in gold and brown, everyone seems to hate them, but I’d much rather see that than the Elway Orange-Royal. The only time I like the current Broncos unis is when they’re white over white, its just a clean looking uniform especially with the orange piping on the stripe. But, I’m also a fan of all of Cal’s uniform combos unless they try to pull gold over gold.

I lived in Ohio for four years and, while I do appreciate that its a solid rivalry and (most years) a good game, it’s not in the same ballpark as “southern” football. Uni’s or otherwise, though Michigan does make a compelling case. I’d have to go with: ‘bama vs. Tennesee; OU vs. texas; OU vs. Nebraska; Cubs vs. Cards; Celtics vs. Lakers; Cowboys vs. 49′ers (late ’80s unis).

Interesting news from the University of Washington today. The Husky men’s team wore their Gold unis against Cal State Northridge… except there was a MAJOR change from previous appearances.
Nike had embroidered their stylized Husky into the shoulder of the uniforms when they delivered them, and the first appearances of the jerseys had the dog in plain sight. Today, all the dogs had been replaced by the W – sewn on top of the Dog logo.
The Nike Dog has been the source of massive controversy, expecially of late… and it’s really an interesting move to see the school be proactive in covering up a Nike mandated logo with a more traditonal one.
There have been threads upon threads on message boards to get rid of the Nike Dog as a logo (and I can tell you first hand that the university has gone exclusively with the W all year long) The message board remarks have criticized the University for it’s “pushing” of the Nike dog, when it has actually been the contrary. I hope this move will silence some of the critics.

I still don’t see what all the uproar is about at Washington. The “Nike Dog” is a fantastic logo. Simple, well-rendered, overall a good looking logo. I understand that people like the traditional W and all, but I just don’t see why people think that a nice looking husky is a bad logo for a team called the Huskies.

There are some who like the Nike Dog… I think it is nice logo as well… but Washington has some hardcore traditionalists that want a “real” Husky… and will stand their ground until they see it.
I actually love the graphic representation logos… some of my favorites are Penn State (which has a great realistic lion logo to compliment the graphic one) Missouri’s tiger and LSU’s Tiger Eye logo is one of my favorites.
To paraphrase a current NHL commercial, “no one ever said they fight for the logo on the front. (laughing)
