The nice thing about co-owning an NBA team is that you can work out with the players whenever you want. And of course you’ll get an official team practice jersey to wear — hey, you’re a part owner, you can raid the pro shop for whatever gear you want. High-five! But wait, the practice jersey features the logo of the company that manufactured it, and you have a longstanding promotional arrangement with a rival company. That’s a slight dilemma, but everyone knows what a savvy businessman you are, so you’ll come up with a smart and elegant solution.
That was the situation facing Michael Jordan yesterday. And here was his smart and elegant solution: He slapped a piece of white tape over the Adidas logo on his chest, although I think it’s fair to say that this maneuver went straight into the “Not fooling anybody” file, especially since he didn’t bother covering up the Adidas stripe treatment (presumably because they ran out of white tape).
I don’t know if Jordan’s still contractually forbidden to wear non-Nike gear, or if the very idea of flashing a non-swoosh logo simply gives him a rash, but this little episode really highlights the continuing absurdity of how sportswear companies have become entangled with leagues and athletes. Did Jordan really think nobody would notice the piece of tape, or understand why it was there? Didn’t this actually draw more attention to the fact that he was wearing Adidas gear than if he hadn’t worn the tape to begin with? Couldn’t he have avoided this problem altogether if he’d just turned the shirt inside-out or worn a some other shirt? Oh, but then the Bobcats logo wouldn’t have been visible, so he wouldn’t have been promoting his team and its merch. What a mess — the whole situation reeks.
I’ll have more to say about logo creep tomorrow. Meanwhile, how much you wanna bet that some kid out there is gonna start wearing a piece of tape over the Adidas logo on his Bobcats jersey, just like his idol, MJ?

Raffle Reminder: Today’s the last day to enter the holiday raffle. For details, scroll down to the middle of Friday’s entry. As always, you can increase your odds of winning by joining the Uni Watch membership program. I’ll announce the winners tomorrow.
And hey, speaking of raffles: Are you excited about the Pro Bowl? Right, me neither. But the NFL is raffling off a free trip to its annual snooze-a-thon all-star game, and let’s face it, a free trip to Hawaii is a free trip to Hawaii, even if it does entail watching the world’s lamest football game. Plus the Pro Bowl is a uni watcher’s dream (assuming you dream about the really bad design), so it’s a win-win. To enter, look here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Vikings’ solid-purple look will not be repeated (that good news brought our way by Chad Burma). … Weird sequence of events yesterday, beginning when Kenn Tomasch sent me a note reporting that Steve Young’s orange jersey didn’t have stripes in 1985 like the rest of the Bucs had. Upon further investigation I discovered several other anomalies, to wit: Young appears to have ghosted sleeve stripes here and here; some of Tampa’s linemen didn’t have sleeve stripes either; kicker Donald Igwebuike (one of my all-time favorite sports names) had stripes, but his sleeve connected to his jersey down around his belly; if you factor in the sleeves, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen another NFL jersey look as mesh-y as this. … Michael Vick may not be in the NFL anymore, but he’s leaving quite a trail in his wake. … Looks like a Georgia Southern player was wearing a one-sleeved undershirt the other day (with thanks to Bob Jaye). … The Rutgers football team’s equipment manager is retiring (with thanks to Bruce Soltys). … Greg Riffenburgh notes that Minnesota’s Anthony Herrera appeared to be violating the NFL’s “only one footwear trim color allowed” rule the other night. … If you can’t prevent a concussion, at least you can know if you’ve gotten one. … Todd Krevanchi notes that Houston is using different font sets for its front and back uni numbers, and you can see in the 2s here. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Awesome old newsreel footage shot in the Red Wings and Rangers locker rooms here.

To me it looks like Steve Young is wearing a practice jersey. The second shot seems pretty up close for a game shot, and there is no other players around to compare. The lineman probably has his sleeves tucked inside his pads to get the shirt as tight as possible.

I don’t want to defend Jordan, but basketball practice jerseys are reversible. Dark on one side, light on the other. And I would think that all the logos and stripes are on both sides. But the tape is still pretty silly.

There would be a problem, because he is a major player, if not major shareholder of a shoe and apparel company bearing his own name and image. Street Cred and loyalty go farther than you would imagine. As observant as we are, imagine middle and high school kids who line up for hours before a foot locker opens to pick up the freshest pair of retro kicks. Believe me, MJ wearing the three stripes logo on his chest would be akin ro a Red Sock wearing Yankee pinstripes!(Johnny Damon, Big Papi in this year’s ESPN commercial.)
However, I was and still am one of those kids who lines up for the kicks of my youth albeit, I am thirty years old with a mortgage, a family, and a teaching career. The swoosh, through ingenious advertising and player endorsing has created in me, a loyal follower.
Those of you sneakerheads,(NIKETALKERS UNITE, Todd Krevanchi I thank you for all of us!) can remember anticipating the NBA All Star Game just to get a glimpse of the black Playoff edition Jordans that wouldn”t be out for four months. There weren”t screen shots, Niketalk, or Uni-Watch to satisfy our curiosities. I would wait for Sports Illustrated to arrive on Friday afternnons, and I would scan every page for a mere hint of a view. The toiling of my first job in eighth grade cleaning up a gas station served the purpose of purchasing a pair of of the Air Jordan VI in the black/infra red colorway:

As for Steve Young, I believe that he is doing something that I did in High school to eliminate the extra long sleeves, sorry Paul! He folded the extra length up and back into the sleeve and then as secured the extra folded length somehow. Lacking ingenuity and materials, I used similar colr shoe lace to my jersey. Sadly enough, I do have pictures, as well as the actual jersey, 12 years later.

Oh and as far as the lining up for shoes goes, no more of that for me either! I;m thirty with that career and a mortgage. I also, unfortunately and fortunately have a credit card and the Internet. I’ll leave the line waiting to the young buck newbies just entering the shoe game!

If he is co-owner why doesn’t he just change their gear to Nike. Wouldn’t it make life easier, more profitable for him, and he wouldn’t look stupid with tape on his shirt.

Gotta agree with Phil here. Turn the jersey inside out, and suddenly you’re on the wrong team. Also gotta agree with Paul though, MJ may have made a ton of money from the swoosh, but he also made a ton of money in this league, and guess what MJ, the league has a deal with adidas, so deal with it. Are you telling me that if he were still playing that he’d put tape over the logo on his shooting shirt and his warm-up? Come on.
Also worth noting, my two year old daughter referred to the swoosh on her shoe this morning as a “squoosh.” (I was trying to teach her how adidas is superior to nike at the time.) I got a good laugh out of the whole thing.

I like to think that MJ is well aware of obvoiuosness of the tape use and is kind of mocking the silliness of legal/contractual issues.

good post by matt powers on MJ
my $.02: i can’t really blame MJ on this one and here’s why – it probably didn’t cross his mind how different the jersey would look with the white piece of tape on it, if the practice jerseys had 50 adidas logos i’m sure he would have done the exact same thing – but, as was previously mentioned, he very well could be contractually obligated to do such a thing to a rival company’s logo, and to be honest, even if he wasn’t, he might do it anyway – we know where his loyalty lies, and for anyone that has read MJ talking about Nike taking a chance on him back in the day, you know how appreciative he was, and certainly is today – but hey, at least he didn’t pull a VT and draw the swoosh on right ;)

I used to work with the TB Bucs a while back. One year, during training camp, Keyshawn had just left Adidas and signed with Nike to wear their gloves and cleats, etc. Between two-a-days, Key didnt have a shirt so they had to give him a team issue Adidas shirt.(this was back in 2000, pre-NFL equipment/Reebok). Back in the day, without the Internet, Uni-Watch, and Niketalk, the anticipation for new things was incredible. Seeing a new Major League fitted or anything team specific, like a Notre Dame sideline jacket meant something special! Either that person played at ND or knew someone who did, there was mystery. New Jordans or any Nikes during that era caused such a commotion!
I love the Internet and accessibility but it has diminished that anticipation greatly. I love the ability to see shoes a year befor they release, Huarache 08, but I loved being surprised.
It’s like Sports Center and YouTube. Being at the Browns/Bills snowbowl is incredible. even watching it on TV. Now everyone can lay claim by seeing highlights 12 times on SC or online. I couldn’t wait for Warner Wolf at 6:25 of the evening news to give me a quick snapshot into the world of sports. It meant so much more.
Would you rather see the monster in the movie or it’s shadow for two hours? The implied, the imagination is so much better!

I’ve actually been wondering why his death is more important leaguewide than those that occured in the offseason (Darrent Williams, Damien Nash, Marquise Hill). Sure it occured midseason, but shouldn’t leaguewide tributes be standard across the board? The Redskins should have a memorial patch and/or helmet sticker, but I’m not sure it should be leaguewide.
I thought that the ‘Skins leaving Taylor’s spot open (ie playing only 10 men) was a great tribute, and think the same should be done in the Pro Bowl (since he was elected a starter), but the leaguewide “21’s” make his death seem more important to the NFL than those of the other players we’ve lost this year, which I think is wrong.

Another note on the 1986 AFC Divisional game shown on ESPN2 between the Jet and Browns last night made me think about Paul’s Monday Morning Uni-Watch talking about the biggest changes in football uniforms in the past 30 years.
While watching the game, even though it doesn’t seem like so long ago, the thing that struck me the most was the much larger size of the shoulder pads used in 1986 as opposed to todays slimed down versions, and adding to that, the fact that most players wore much larger thigh pads then too.
Watching the game it just seemed like a world of difference between 1986 and today, pad wise.
Many of todays players wear basically no pads at all.

I really don’t see the problem with Jordan hiding the Adidas logo. Nike has payed him a very large chunk of his fortune. For him to be seen wearing a competitors logo just isn’t right. I don’t think Paul would walk around in CBS Sportsline gear or tout how great CNNsi is would he?

Seems to me that if Jordan wanted to get a pair to wear at practice he could.

I think that college player with the one undersleeve must actually be wearing some kind of shoulder brace. The NCAA rules state in Rule 3, Artilecle 13, “An undershirt is considered to be part of the game jersey and must be a color similar to that of the game jersey. In addition, the sleeves and neckline of undershirts shall be unaltered. (e.g., no cut-off sleeves or cut necklines) Both sleeves shall be of the same length and not extend beyond the elbows.”

The embroidered Ms on the sides, the beautiful cloth. And I had em extra long in honor of my favorite basketball player of all-time, Jalen Rose.
It’s amazing to think about how I felt about the Fab Five as a kid, and how long ago that actually was.
Earlier than the shorts, I actually bought the Air Jordan IXs as a sixth grader (and by I, I mean my dad) because Jalen was wearing em to start that season with the signature black socks.

Boston Nick,
In 1995, I found the Navy authentic Fab Five shorts in Staten Island. To this day, they are one of my favorite posessions. I can’t rock them playing ball though, because as they were long back then, the only people who would like their length now might be John Stockton, Brian Scalabrine, or David Stern! Still looking for your maize pair. A buddy whom I tought with had a pair and we would play after school. I basically offered to grade all of his papers for a month to pry them away from him!
I can only remember the Five wearing Huaraches as Freshman along with the Navy shorts against Duke in the Final. And in their final as sophomores against Carolina, they wore the Air Force Max B with their signature Black socks.

Re: Gladiator Football Helmet
It wasn’t that long ago that old-school football fans complained about how ugly those new-fangled helmets had become, especially with those sissy facemasks. Then, they were proven to reduce head and face injuries by an almost exponential factor over previous designs. Quickly, helmets and facemasks evolved into the technologically advanced and subsequently expensive articles that they are today.
I have a son playing high school football. One of his good friends just suffered a major concussion (his second in two years) wearing a Schutt DNA, supposedly one of the most advanced models of helmet on the market. Which, by the way, was initially roundly denounced as “ugly.”
Now, a new and improved football helmet system is available, and one of the biggest arguments against it is that it is ugly.
As ugly as the last years of Mike Webster’s life?
I think not.
When available to my son, I will encourage him to wear any ugly helmet that helps keep his brain safe.

They even ship them to away games and set them up in/outside the visitors locker room for the post-game news conferences. They stated in the article that the printed banners would take so much abuse when shipping and setup/removal that the electronic boards were more cost effective. Plus, the time to produce a banner was like weeks, versus seconds with a laptop and USB port. If they added a new corporate sponser, they could be displaying that logo within minutes.

An NHL rule back then stated that, while Stanley Cup Final games can be played on neutral ice, no deciding game of the Cup Finals could be played on neutral ice. Therefore, games 1 and 2, scheduled to be played in New York, were scheduled in Toronto (Maple Leaf Gardens). With the Rangers holding a 3-2 series lead against Detroit, the series was supposed to go back to New York, but the circus hadn’t finished (it’s not as if they could just cover the ice back then), so the series stayed at Detroit’s Olympia Stadium for games 6 and 7. The Rangers lost both games by a goal; game 7 went double overtime. Many looked to this series as a major part of the legend of the Rangers’ 54-year Cup drought.

now, i’m going to throw on my winnipeg authentic and cry myself to sleep tonight.
hey, that should be an interesting question…
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JERSEY IN YOUR COLLECTION???
personally… i can’t choose just one… maybe that’s the beauty of the whole thing! but, if i had to choose a 2 way tie: winnipeg authentic & pirates away sleeveless (sp?) authentic (those jersey’s have been through SO many games…)

Rangers/Red Wings clip: nice find. Interesting that the Rangers played two ‘home’ games in the 1950 Finals at Maple Leaf Gardens. I wasn’t aware that they did so because the old Madison Square Garden had been booked for the Ringling Bros. Circus. Crazy.
Thanks for the rest of the details.
Geez, how’d you like to have been on the Rangers squad and learn your home-ice advantage was usurped by elephants and clowns. ♠
Of course, the whole reason this was an issue was that the Garden booked the circus for that time figuring that there was no way the Rangers would make the Cup finals.
With the move to the new Garden in 1968, and a modern ice making/HVAC system, this is no longer an issue. They can now flip from circus to hockey with no problem. I remember going to a Rangers playoff game when I was a kid (circa early 70s). While my dad parked the car, my mom took my sister and me into the game. When we got to the turnstiles, the ticket taker took one look, held up his hand, and said: “Sorry. The circus is canceled today because of a hockey game.”

Maybe rbk should watch that red wings rangers footage. tight fitting jerseys that looked good with no wierd hem lines or piping and rangers was centered on the jersey. also the narrator noted that the goalie pads were 40lbs.! lets see how good goalies would be today with 40lbs tied to their legs.

I completely agree with you. Nike is way better when it somes to soccer jerseys than adidas. No stupid piping, no stupid templates, and the material just feels better (at least for the authentic/replica jerseys). Occasionally they come out with some silly stuff (i.e. this year’s Club America jerseys), but overall they’re classy, clean, and simple.

I’m a little late to the party (and didn’t want to read each post – I’m lazy, sorry), but does anyone remember the Dream Team in ‘92, with the Reekbok warmups, and MJ, Magic, Larry Legend all wrapped the American flag around their neck and purposely covered the name Reebok because it infringed on their contracts with Nike and Converse?
and when you’re worth whatever Jordan is, you do whatever the hell you want.

Make sure you bet the farm on LSU. Since they’ll be wearing white, there’s no way they can lose. Those purple jerseys are pure evil, evil I tell you! LIKE ANYONE GIVES A S*** ABOUT WHAT JERSEY CLOLOR YOU’RE WEARING! LIKE IT NEEDS A PRESS RELEASE!

Watching the Celtics – Pistons game on ESPN and they keep showing Big Papi sitting courtside in a Ray Allen jersey. He’s wearing a black Red Sox hat with a small B inside an outline of Massachusetts on the front except for the entirety of Cape Cod. The sewing looks thin enough that they could have added Cape Cod without doubling the stitching over, so this may be on purpose.

There apparently is alot of Bobcats gear with the Jumpman on it. I’m not sure how they get by with it though.
Nike can make all the Bobcats gear they want to, it just won’t be “official” NBA product, since Adidas is inked as the sole “official” manufacturer of NBA goods… My question: why doesn’t Jordan just wear one of the hundreds of Nike practice jerseys that have to be swarming the market? It’s obvious that he just wore the jerseys because they were on-hand, then when the camera men came he covered up the logo to avoid any Nike spurn

It’s kind of funny, though. The dude’s in his mid-40s, has made a shit ton of money for Nike and himself, literally has to answer to nobody on the basketball court … and he’s worried about the little Adidas logo? I mean, I see why he did it — the Nike affiliation — but come on. I think Mike gets a free pass on that one. Unless, of course, his red blood cells are shaped like Swooshes. Then it makes perfect sense.

I have one of those Miami jerseys with left sleeve all orange. I know most people on this site disapprove, but I thought they were unique, even though I got it off the clearance rack for 40 buck. I almost got the Marcus Vick VT with the orange sleeve, but they didn’t have my size. They also had a Gators jersey with the sleeve.

Beautiful game in Boston. Two great teams, throwback uniforms, all on that parque floor. Beautiful
The only inconsistency in that game is that (I believe) the Celtics wore green shoes back in the day, not white. Other than that, very nice.

How could the Miami one be “unique” when, as your own comment points out, several other schools wore the same concept? That was the biggest problem with the orange-sleeve jerseys: The four schools that wore them effectively become a new team — Team Nike.
#204 by derek on 12.20.07 8:54 am |
Paul- not to sound like an ass but you rant on about how corporate advertising is getting out of hand in sports and life yet you have have adds all over your site. dont you think thats a little hypocritical?
#205 by Colten on 12.20.07 9:28 am |
I didn’t mean that they were unique to Miami only, but that is was a new concept that no one had tried before. While it failed miserably, I can look back years down the road and know that I have a jersey that people don’t run across every day. By the way, you said four teams wore the design. I saw Miami, Florida, and VT. Who was the fourth?

No, that’a an apples/oranges comparison. Advertising on a web site is perfectly legitimate and appropriate — that’s how publications stay in business (esp. ones that give away their content for free, like this one). Advertising on a uniform is, in my opinion, INappropriate, because the uniform should stand for the brand of the team, not for any other brand.
See today’s post for more thoughts on this topic.

It’s amazing how corporate sponsorship slowly gets into everything to do with sports. Even in the CFL we have stadiums named after companies . Thank goodness Ivor Wynne has retained it’s historical designation, although when the new stadium is built I imagine we will end up with Ivor Wynne Field at Tim Horton’s Park or something like that. I noticed that NBA Replicas carry the Adidas logo when I was out shopping today. Like I really need to know that my CB4 jersey comes from the three stripes. One other thing, on my old CCM Vancouver replica the logo is on the back of the neck, so if I was a true Canadian hockey player complete with the hair no one would ever see it!

[...] Two Sundays ago, Bryan posted this photo and complained about all the ACC logos visible therein. This led to a lengthy back-and-forth in the comments section about logo creep — mostly about swooshes and other maker’s marks, not about conference logos. The discussion, which I did not take part in (I was at a bar watching football and caught up on the comments later), featured several arguments and analogies that I hear again and again regarding logo creep — arguments that are, frankly, way off-base. Some similar arguments came up yesterday regarding Michael Jordan’s taped-over Adidas logo. [...]
