Hey, MJ, How Much Do You Care That Corporate Branding Is Ruining Sports? ‘Oh, About This Much’

jordan.jpg

The nice thing about co-owning an NBA team is that you can work out with the players whenever you want. And of course you’ll get an official team practice jersey to wear — hey, you’re a part owner, you can raid the pro shop for whatever gear you want. High-five! But wait, the practice jersey features the logo of the company that manufactured it, and you have a longstanding promotional arrangement with a rival company. That’s a slight dilemma, but everyone knows what a savvy businessman you are, so you’ll come up with a smart and elegant solution.

That was the situation facing Michael Jordan yesterday. And here was his smart and elegant solution: He slapped a piece of white tape over the Adidas logo on his chest, although I think it’s fair to say that this maneuver went straight into the “Not fooling anybody” file, especially since he didn’t bother covering up the Adidas stripe treatment (presumably because they ran out of white tape).

I don’t know if Jordan’s still contractually forbidden to wear non-Nike gear, or the very idea of flashing a non-swoosh logo simply gives him a rash, but this little episode really highlights the continuing absurdity of how sportswear companies have become entangled with leagues and athletes. Did Jordan really think nobody would notice the piece of tape, or understand why it was there? Didn’t this actually draw more attention to the fact that he was wearing Adidas gear than if he hadn’t worn the tape to begin with? Couldn’t he have avoided this problem altogether if he’d just turned the shirt inside-out or worn a some other shirt? Oh, but then the Bobcats logo wouldn’t have been visible, so he wouldn’t have been promoting his team and its merch. What a mess — the whole situation reeks.

I’ll have more to say about logo creep tomorrow. Meanwhile, how much you wanna bet that some kid out there is gonna start wearing a piece of tape over the Adidas logo on his Bobcats jersey, just like his idol, MJ?

rafflet ticket by ben thoma.jpg

Raffle Reminder: Today’s the last day to enter the holiday raffle. For details, scroll down to the middle of Friday’s entry. As always, you can increase your odds of winning by joining the Uni Watch membership program. I’ll announce the winners tomorrow.

And hey, speaking of raffles: Are you excited about the Pro Bowl? Right, me neither. But the NFL is raffling off a free trip to its annual snooze-a-thon all-star game, and let’s face it, a free trip to Hawaii is a free trip to Hawaii, even if it does entail watching the world’s lamest football game. Plus the Pro Bowl is a uni watcher’s dream (assuming you dream about the really bad design), so it’s a win-win. To enter, look here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The Vikings’ solid-purple look will not be repeated (that good news brought our way by Chad Burma). … Weird sequence of events yesterday, beginning when Kenn Tomasch sent me a note reporting that Steve Young’s orange jersey didn’t have stripes in 1985 like the rest of the Bucs had. Upon further investigation I discovered several other anomalies, to wit: Young appears to have ghosted sleeve stripes here and here; some of Tampa’s linemen didn’t have sleeve stripes either; kicker Donald Igwebuike (one of my all-time favorite sports names) had stripes, but his sleeve connected to his jersey down around his belly; if you factor in the sleeves, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen another NFL jersey look as mesh-y as this. … Michael Vick may not be in the NFL anymore, but he’s leaving quite a trail in his wake. … Looks like a Georgia Southern player was wearing a one-sleeved undershirt the other day (with thanks to Bob Jaye). … The Rutgers football team’s equipment manager is retiring (with thanks to Bruce Soltys). … Greg Riffenburgh notes that Minnesota’s Anthony Herrera appeared to be violating the NFL’s “only one footwear trim color allowed” rule the other night. … If you can’t prevent a concussion, at least you can know if you’ve gotten one. … Todd Krevanchi notes that Houston is using different font sets for its front and back uni numbers, and you can see in the 2s here. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Awesome old newsreel footage shot in the Red Wings and Rangers locker rooms here.

To me it looks like Steve Young is wearing a practice jersey. The second shot seems pretty up close for a game shot, and there is no other players around to compare. The lineman probably has his sleeves tucked inside his pads to get the shirt as tight as possible.

MJ’s tape-over-the-Adidas-logo maneuver got on SportsCenter, even before the actual footage.

I don’t want to defend Jordan, but basketball practice jerseys are reversible. Dark on one side, light on the other. And I would think that all the logos and stripes are on both sides. But the tape is still pretty silly.

There would be a problem, because he is a major player, if not major shareholder of a shoe and apparel company bearing his own name and image. Street Cred and loyalty go farther than you would imagine. As observant as we are, imagine middle and high school kids who line up for hours before a foot locker opens to pick up the freshest pair of retro kicks. Believe me, MJ wearing the three stripes logo on his chest would be akin ro a Red Sock wearing Yankee pinstripes!(Johnny Damon, Big Papi in this year’s ESPN commercial.)

However, I was and still am one of those kids who lines up for the kicks of my youth albeit, I am thirty years old with a mortgage, a family, and a teaching career. The swoosh, through ingenious advertising and player endorsing has created in me, a loyal follower.

Those of you sneakerheads,(NIKETALKERS UNITE, Todd Krevanchi I thank you for all of us!) can remember anticipating the NBA All Star Game just to get a glimpse of the black Playoff edition Jordans that wouldn”t be out for four months. There weren”t screen shots, Niketalk, or Uni-Watch to satisfy our curiosities. I would wait for Sports Illustrated to arrive on Friday afternnons, and I would scan every page for a mere hint of a view. The toiling of my first job in eighth grade cleaning up a gas station served the purpose of purchasing a pair of of the Air Jordan VI in the black/infra red colorway:

http://instyleshoes....

because my father had gotten laid off as an electrician and couldn’t split the cost as he had done in previous years alongwith my chore money! Needless to say, I treated those shoes like my first born child, while learning a valuable lesson at the same time. Interesting how education works!

Just cause we like logos…here is the new Iowa Caucus logo that is a COMBINED effort for the Dems and Reps.

Look here:

http://cycloneconser...

As for Steve Young, I believe that he is doing something that I did in High school to eliminate the extra long sleeves, sorry Paul! He folded the extra length up and back into the sleeve and then as secured the extra folded length somehow. Lacking ingenuity and materials, I used similar colr shoe lace to my jersey. Sadly enough, I do have pictures, as well as the actual jersey, 12 years later.

It looks like Jordan has on Jumpman Shorts with the Bobcat logo.

Why couldn’t he get a jersey printed up too?

Oh and as far as the lining up for shoes goes, no more of that for me either! I;m thirty with that career and a mortgage. I also, unfortunately and fortunately have a credit card and the Internet. I’ll leave the line waiting to the young buck newbies just entering the shoe game!

If he is co-owner why doesn’t he just change their gear to Nike. Wouldn’t it make life easier, more profitable for him, and he wouldn’t look stupid with tape on his shirt.

I don’t want to defend Jordan, but basketball practice jerseys are reversible. Dark on one side, light on the other. And I would think that all the logos and stripes are on both sides. But the tape is still pretty silly.

Gotta agree with Phil here. Turn the jersey inside out, and suddenly you’re on the wrong team. Also gotta agree with Paul though, MJ may have made a ton of money from the swoosh, but he also made a ton of money in this league, and guess what MJ, the league has a deal with adidas, so deal with it. Are you telling me that if he were still playing that he’d put tape over the logo on his shooting shirt and his warm-up? Come on.

Also worth noting, my two year old daughter referred to the swoosh on her shoe this morning as a “squoosh.” (I was trying to teach her how adidas is superior to nike at the time.) I got a good laugh out of the whole thing.

If he is co-owner why doesn’t he just change their gear to Nike. Wouldn’t it make life easier, more profitable for him, and he wouldn’t look stupid with tape on his shirt.

Not his call, adidas has a deal with the NBA to make all of the gear. Practice jerseys, uniforms, warm-ups, etc.

To me it looks like Steve Young is wearing a practice jersey. The second shot seems pretty up close for a game shot, and there is no other players around to compare. The lineman probably has his sleeves tucked inside his pads to get the shirt as tight as possible.

I second that.

Great soccer kit site here: http://www.truecolou...

Agree with previous posters - I always guessed that the players without sleeve stripes were that way because they shortened the sleeves due to personal preference. It wasn’t just the Bucs, either…

sean taylor was post-humously elected to the pro bowl, becoming only the second athlete in a major sport to be so honored (pelle lindburg [sp?] being the other)…along with redskins teammates chris cooley & chris samuels (plus a bunch of alternates)

question…will either or both cooley or samuels be wearing a “21″ memorial patch on their NFC jersey’s and do you think the NFL will have any official “policy” on the 21 pride sticker on the helmets (ie…everyone has one, just the skins, or player option)?

wow! i havent seen him wear the sky highs since the advert he did his rookie year.

Does anyone remember the link to that really weird anti-concussion helmet that was talked about on here not too long ago?

Not to veer off topic from any of today’s insights, but going through some of my vinyl this morning, I came across The Who’s “Odds and Sods”, and had completely forgotten about the album cover with the band wearing American football helmets.

Anyone else know of other album covers with any uni-related stuff on them?

I like to think that MJ is well aware of obvoiuosness of the tape use and is kind of mocking the silliness of legal/contractual issues.

He’s been in the logo creep business long enough to realize how absurd it can get.

I could not find another mention of it, but I am sure someone had to have mentioned the Capitals canning their new sweaters and demanding sweaters made of the old material…….not sure when they will start wearing it.

good post by matt powers on MJ

my $.02: i can’t really blame MJ on this one and here’s why - it probably didn’t cross his mind how different the jersey would look with the white piece of tape on it, if the practice jerseys had 50 adidas logos i’m sure he would have done the exact same thing - but, as was previously mentioned, he very well could be contractually obligated to do such a thing to a rival company’s logo, and to be honest, even if he wasn’t, he might do it anyway - we know where his loyalty lies, and for anyone that has read MJ talking about Nike taking a chance on him back in the day, you know how appreciative he was, and certainly is today - but hey, at least he didn’t pull a VT and draw the swoosh on right ;)

MJ is Nike, still. People have got to remember, they still make Air Jordans, and probably will until the end of time. By they, I mean 6 to 10 year old Asian children.

What about the Eagles of the late 70’s and early 80’s? They were the kings of mesh jerseys.

As for the Caps sweater issue, here is the link:
http://www.onfrozenb...

Gladiator helmet link:

http://machinedesign...

I’d love to win the Pro Bowl contest, uh, I don’t have to go to the game do I?

agreed - definitely looks like the stripe portion of the bucs jersey was just folded up (not cut off). the ghosting is because the jerseys were so meshy the stripes still showed.

sean taylor was post-humously elected to the pro bowl, becoming only the second athlete in a major sport to be so honored (pelle lindburg [sp?] being the other)…along with redskins teammates chris cooley & chris samuels (plus a bunch of alternates)

First off, I’m really glad that he was able to win that vote. He’d have probably done so if not for what happened, and it’s nice to know he’ll be memorialized in that way.

Anyway, I’d like to see the memorial patch on everyone, but more important to me would be seeing the NFC defense lining up 10 on the first play (and the AFC either running up the gut or taking a knee on that play, so as to not take too much advantage of the missing man.)

Good call Rob, that always happened to mine. We had princeton style jerseys and the stripes were always “ghosted”.

Does anyone remember the link to that really weird anti-concussion helmet that was talked about on here not too long ago?

I work in a big manufacturing plant, so I actually have the trade mag that featured this helmet. It was sent to one of our shop foreman and I snatched it up. Weird looking stuff.

Why didn’t Jordan just drape himself in the flag? It worked for him once.

Followup: Here’s some 1985 Bears, showing several sleeve stripe variations due to sleeve length.

What are those cool sneakers. Are they the new Air Jordan’s?

I don’t care what you say, I still like the old Bucs uniforms. Yes, winking pirate and all.

And for anyone who says they were nothing but bad luck, lest ye forget they were on the cusp of a super bowl in 1979 and I believe knocked out the Cowboys in the divisional round in 1983. They have some good history associated with them.

whether or not it is written in a contract or not, that tape was placed there out of design and was a strategic move.

we all remember this right?

WOW! $600?!?! more power to you! nice shoes though!!!

and:

(I was trying to teach her how adidas is superior to nike at the time)

…don’t teach your kids lies! lol. kidding. seriously, i LOVE nike products! i think adidas makes a much lower quality jersey (look at the old nike us soccer jerseys as opposed to the new adidas mls junk jerseys… HUGE difference in quality!!! nike, FAR better (i have one of each)). even with shoes, you just can’t go wrong with nike… and don’t even get me started on rbk…

When I was in college in the early ’90s I played a lot of pickup hoops with a close group of friends and the best player among us (eventual Rhodes Scholar in math/astrophysics and today a college prof) couldn’t afford new shoes. I was the moneybags of our group and as a gift I bought him a pair of the same Air Jordan VI you scrounged for. He was so happy he kissed me on the cheek at the checkout counter (and no, neither of us is gay). He loved those shoes dearly and was the toast of the court at Oxford in the pickup games he played there. Despite the totally disgusting feeling of his beard stubble rubbing against mine during that peck on the cheek, it’s a fond memory, and worth every penny of the $100 I paid.

Nice to see the Vikes all purple look was a one time deal.

Now, someone please get Pat to tell them to wear the purple pants with the white jersey, where the stripes actually match up, and they look awesome.

Jordan probably only put the tape on his shirt because a photographer was there.

And to his credit atleast he didn’t draw a little “jumpman” on the tape.

Nike should just buy Adidas/Reebok and be done with it!

Ryan C.

In 1992, they were either 100 or 125 dollars, which at the time, might as well have been 600!

i remember aj vi’s costing $125!
working at footlocker had its priveleges though.
the vi’s were my senior year and i always got 40% off new stuff. my manager allowed me to wear the vi’s for hoops the day we got them in, a full 2 weeks prior to release.

man, the looks i got for those first 2 games before anyone had any idea what i was wearing.

My apologies if this was covered already but I was watching NFL’s Greatest Games on ESPN2 last night which featured the 1986 AFC Divisional playoff game between the Browns and Jets. They had a shot of Clarence Weathers featuring a small FNOB on top of his last name. Couldn’t get a screen grab but I did find a picture online.

Clarence Weathers

The other C. Weathers on the 1985 Browns was Curtis Weathers. Can’t find a picture.

There apparently is alot of Bobcats gear with the Jumpman on it. I’m not sure how they get by with it though.

not only that, it was a great example of the two different jet uni’s worn that year (mainly the typography). mickey shuler had the stadard block varsity “2″ whereas the rest of the team hand the angled “2″.

I used to work with the TB Bucs a while back. One year, during training camp, Keyshawn had just left Adidas and signed with Nike to wear their gloves and cleats, etc. Between two-a-days, Key didnt have a shirt so they had to give him a team issue Adidas shirt.(this was back in 2000, pre-NFL equipment/Reebok). Key cut the silver dollar sized Adidas logo out of the middle of the shirt and walked around with a shirt with a big hole in it for the rest of the day.

Try this again.

So MJ has a dilemma with wearing addidas because he is owned by nike. Are there any other situations like this in sports?

Another major milestone in my Nike servitude occurred when Five young men decided to play basketball in Ann Arbor. Not onluy did they introduce these incredible and long lasting lines of shoes to the world:

http://instyleshoes....

http://www.kicksguid...

http://www.pickyours...

They brought these to my attention, which have become my Holy Grail:

http://cache.viewima...

The Maize Dazzle Michigan shorts!
They were extra long and ultra cool!

These don’t hold a candle to the Fab Five version:

http://www.eastbay.c...

Unfortunately, the Nike era at Michigan is coming to a close. My hope is that the people in Beaverton will realize what a cash cow they are losing and put out one last wave of retro Fab Five gear like the shorts, or maybe a Desmond Howard or Charles Woodson( a Uni-Watch favorite)jersey!

OK, I can’t figure out the “link insert” but here is the link to the some more Bobcats logo creep.

Sorry for doing it this way.

Hockey icon Peter Puck is returning to intermissions this season on Leafs TV only. The joke up in Canada is that he’s coming out of retirement to explain the game to Ottawa fans.

I am truly sorry that Sean Taylor was murdered. Really I am. Now tell me what makes his death so much more important than, say, Korey Stringer’s or anyone that works outside of the NFL. I get really tired of putting athletes on pedastals just because they are athletes. There are many more important people in the world that work just as hard and contribute to society in more meaningful ways but toil for far less in a career than some pro athletes make in one season.

Sorry, these don’t compare:

http://www.mgoblue.c...

Rudy Carpenter, QB at Arizona State also wears only one sleeve during games. I believe that it is only on his left arm but I am not sure.

Followup: Here’s some 1985 Bears, showing several sleeve stripe variations due to sleeve length.

Many of the Bears would simply roll their sleeves up to hide the stripes. This would piss off then-Bears President Mike McCaskey, as it would also hide the “GSH” monogram honoring his grandfather, George S. Halas. As McCaskey was almost universally despised by the players, this just encouraged them to keep doing it.

Todd, aimilar thing happened to me with the Bordeaux VII’s. They came out the day of the Super Bowl in the Winter of 1992. My father agreed to dribe me to Secaucus to the Harmon Cove Outler Center to get my new pair. The next day, I had a freshman basketball game at Mount Vernon High school, which is now sponsored by Nike, not a high school who chooses from a template, but a real bona fide sponsorship. The looks and dap i got from their players and fans were well worth it. It helps that I scored 20 plus points. Had I not, I would have been the equivalent of the sude who goes down to the park to play pick up in full Celtics uni!

By the way, these are the Bordeaux VII”s which are similar to a sharpei, in that they are so ugly that they are beautiful!

Back in the day, without the Internet, Uni-Watch, and Niketalk, the anticipation for new things was incredible. Seeing a new Major League fitted or anything team specific, like a Notre Dame sideline jacket meant something special! Either that person played at ND or knew someone who did, there was mystery. New Jordans or any Nikes during that era caused such a commotion!

I love the Internet and accessibility but it has diminished that anticipation greatly. I love the ability to see shoes a year befor they release, Huarache 08, but I loved being surprised.

It’s like Sports Center and YouTube. Being at the Browns/Bills snowbowl is incredible. even watching it on TV. Now everyone can lay claim by seeing highlights 12 times on SC or online. I couldn’t wait for Warner Wolf at 6:25 of the evening news to give me a quick snapshot into the world of sports. It meant so much more.

Would you rather see the monster in the movie or it’s shadow for two hours? The implied, the imagination is so much better!

I am truly sorry that Sean Taylor was murdered. Really I am. Now tell me what makes his death so much more important than, say, Korey Stringer’s or anyone that works outside of the NFL. I’ve actually been wondering why his death is more important leaguewide than those that occured in the offseason (Darrent Williams, Damien Nash, Marquise Hill). Sure it occured midseason, but shouldn’t leaguewide tributes be standard across the board? The Redskins should have a memorial patch and/or helmet sticker, but I’m not sure it should be leaguewide.

I thought that the ‘Skins leaving Taylor’s spot open (ie playing only 10 men) was a great tribute, and think the same should be done in the Pro Bowl (since he was elected a starter), but the leaguewide “21’s” make his death seem more important to the NFL than those of the other players we’ve lost this year, which I think is wrong.

Sigh @ the ‘corporate branding’… again?!? What’s the point?

When I was in college in the early ’90s I played a lot of pickup hoops with a close group of friends and the best player among us (eventual Rhodes Scholar in math/astrophysics and today a college prof) couldn’t afford new shoes. I was the moneybags of our group and as a gift I bought him a pair of the same Air Jordan VI you scrounged for. He was so happy he kissed me on the cheek at the checkout counter (and no, neither of us is gay). He loved those shoes dearly and was the toast of the court at Oxford in the pickup games he played there. Despite the totally disgusting feeling of his beard stubble rubbing against mine during that peck on the cheek, it’s a fond memory, and worth every penny of the $100 I paid.

i remember aj vi’s costing $125!
working at footlocker had its priveleges though.
the vi’s were my senior year and i always got 40% off new stuff. my manager allowed me to wear the vi’s for hoops the day we got them in, a full 2 weeks prior to release.

man, the looks i got for those first 2 games before anyone had any idea what i was wearing.

Upon further reflection, I did pay $120 for my friend’s AJ VIs. At the time it was the most money I’d ever spent on a single item (I was the moneybags of our group in part because I was/am a huge cheapskate).

Does anyone remember the link to that really weird anti-concussion helmet that was talked about on here not too long ago?

vive la revolution

I work in a big manufacturing plant, so I actually have the trade mag that featured this helmet. It was sent to one of our shop foreman and I snatched it up. Weird looking stuff.

That thing looks like a mix between an NFL helmet and Pac-Man.

I still think that Mark Kelso should have modeled the Gladiator.

Didn’t he do exactly that during the 1992 “Dream Team” Olympics?

By the way, these are the Bordeaux VII”s which are similar to a sharpei, in that they are so ugly that they are beautiful!

But what are the sneakers that MJ is wearing in todays pictures?

Another note on the 1986 AFC Divisional game shown on ESPN2 between the Jet and Browns last night made me think about Paul’s Monday Morning Uni-Watch talking about the biggest changes in football uniforms in the past 30 years.

While watching the game, even though it doesn’t seem like so long ago, the thing that struck me the most was the much larger size of the shoulder pads used in 1986 as opposed to todays slimed down versions, and adding to that, the fact that most players wore much larger thigh pads then too.
Watching the game it just seemed like a world of difference between 1986 and today, pad wise.

Many of todays players wear basically no pads at all.

“Had I not, I would have been the equivalent of the sude who goes down to the park to play pick up in full Celtics uni!”

played pick-up basketball with a kid that was A HUGE iverson fan… and… yes… he made/wore his own arm sleeve just like a.i.! ha-ha. lucky, the kid was/is really good!

What strikes me more about the Steve Young photo is the huge facemask on the helmet. You can fit a whole ‘nother face in there and still have room.

I really don’t see the problem with Jordan hiding the Adidas logo. Nike has payed him a very large chunk of his fortune. For him to be seen wearing a competitors logo just isn’t right. I don’t think Paul would walk around in CBS Sportsline gear or tout how great CNNsi is would he?

Not to veer off topic from any of today’s insights, but going through some of my vinyl this morning, I came across The Who’s “Odds and Sods”, and had completely forgotten about the album cover with the band wearing American football helmets.

Anyone else know of other album covers with any uni-related stuff on them?

Not only a uni related album cover but an odds and sods related album cover.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a promo photo which I presumed was an homage to Odds and Sods:

Rangers/Red Wings clip: nice find. Interesting that the Rangers played two ‘home’ games in the 1950 Finals at Maple Leaf Gardens. I wasn’t aware that they did so because the old Madison Square Garden had been booked for the Ringling Bros. Circus. Crazy.
