I don’t know if it was the lighting at Ford Field, the Lions’ awful black alternate jerseys, or the contrast between Detroit’s true silver pants and Dallas’s blue-tinted silver, but the Cowboys’ pants looked absolutely putrid yesterday. Seriously, did you watch that game, or see the highlights? Every time I caught a glimpse of that game on the TV screen, the Cowboys looked like this. Bizarre.
But not quite as bizarre as the sight of the officials wearing their cold-weather slacks for an indoor game. I’ve gotta believe this was a case of one official misplacing his regular pants and the whole crew therefore having to go with the Foot Locker look, but I’ll put in a call to the NFL today to get the scoop.
In other NFL news from yesterday:
• Some teams were still wearing the Sean Taylor memorial decal, others weren’t. There were even variations within individual teams: Most of the Chargers didn’t wear the decal, but a few of them did, including LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie. Oh, and this guy was still memorializing Taylor too.
• One team that didn’t wear the memorial decal — or any other rear-helmet adornment — was the Bills. They were wearing their gorgeous throwbacks, which always feature completely blank rear helmets — no flag, no league logo, no nothing (a phenomenon I first identified early last season). I’m told WR Roscoe Parrish wore the Sean Taylor decal, however. Couldn’t find a photo of that, but I did find a shot of his Taylor-ized eye black.
• It’s hard to see, but the “Riddell” logo on Plaxico Burress’s helmet was raised, just like the the “ny” on the team’s non-Riddell helmets.
• More lower-leg shenanigans from Al Harris.
• And in our weekly Flag Watch feature, Dallas Clark’s flag decal was still missing. No photo yet.

Friendly Reminder: I’ll be presenting a historical survey of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ uniforms tonight at Automotive High School’s gorgeous auditorium (which is located here), as part of the City Reliquary’s annual fund-raising gala. I can honestly say that I think anyone reading this would learn a few things from the presentation — I learned quite a bit myself while researching it. For $30, you get to see me, author extraordinaire Lawrence Weschler, live performances from Los Bomberos de Brooklyn and a live drum corps, and excerpts from a documentary film about a very specific Brooklyn subculture (I’ll let that part be a surprise), plus you’ll be supporting an extremely worthy cause that’s very dear to me. I hope some of you NYCers will show up. The event starts at 7 p.m., and I’m told that my segment will begin a little after 8 p.m.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The AHL’s All-Star Game jerseys will look like this (with thanks to Eric Hawkins). … Last Monday I mentioned that Braylon Edwards was playing bare-legged at the beginning of the Browns/Cards game, but I didn’t have a photo. Now, thanks to Jeffrey Nye, I do. … Interesting note from Andrew MacNamee, who writes: “When I first saw the Phillies’ new alternates, I knew they reminded me of something, but I couldn’t put my finger on it until a couple days ago. I remembered that they appeared on a couple baseball cards I had — namely, Mariano Duncan’s and Bob Ayrault’s 1993 Topps cards. Notable differences between these and the new alternates: The ‘P’ on the cap is in the Whiz Kids-era font, as opposed to the current ‘P’ on the new caps; the stars on the chest insignia are red, not blue; and no Cool Base jersey. According to a team source I e-mailed, this was a one-time uniform used for a throwback promotion against the Reds in 1992.” … “Mark Dodge, a linebacker for Texas A&M, wore his mother’s family name for his NOB during the A&M/Texas game,” writes Dustin Qualls. “He had to get special permission from the NCAA to do this. He was honoring his grandmother and aunt, who had both recently passed away. So his nameplate had ‘Thomas’ on it instead of ‘Dodge.’ I can’t find a picture, but here’s a story about it.” … Tons of great old stadium photos here (with thanks to Dave Soline). … Mike Lindsey notes that Bears punter Brad Maynard was wearing his chinstrap under his jaw on Thursday night. … The Reds will memorialize Joe Nuxhall with a sleeve patch next season. … Great find by Brian Castile, who writes: “Back in 1977, when Iowa State and the University of Iowa played football for the first time in 43 years, ISU wore ‘BEAT IOWA’ on the front of their jerseys, as you can see in this video clip. Unfortunately they lost the game. Later in the year, ISU played North Carolina State in the Peach Bowl and they altered the letters on the jerseys to read ‘PEACH BOWL.’ Again, they lost the game.” … The single-A Yakima Bears have unveiled a new identity system. I’m particularly fond of this. Full slideshow here (with thanks to Travis McGuire). … Further ursine-themed minor league action in Fresno, where the Grizzlies have released an updated design scheme. Details here. … We’ve all seen late-career photos of Yaz wearing an enlarged earhole, but I’d never seen the hole hollowed out to the extent seen here and here until Nicholas Bean sent me those two photos the other day. … Some seriously busy youth league unis being worn by the Staten Island Hurricanes — five kids, five different sock styles, plus check out the facemaks stripes on No. 6. And that’s not counting their other pants design (as found by Jeff Cooperman). … Lots of NBA throwback action over the weekend, as seen here, here, here, and here. … Speaking of which, good breakdown of the distinctions between the Lakers’ past and current uniforms here (with thanks to Ty Nowell). … Aaron Bolerjack reports that Man U will wear special non-sponsored uniforms on February 10th, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash disaster. … By now most of you know that the libero on a volleyball team wears a different-colored jersey. But Jeremy Brahm notes that the liberos in Italy also have different sponsors. The most extreme example is the Pallavolo Modena team, whose libero is sponsored by Marvel Comics (additional pics here). … Jeremy also sent along this article about Sadaharu Oh, in which the Japanese slugger opines, “They (Japanese players) like to wear their pants too long like American players, where you can’t even see their shoes. I don’t like that. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but the old Cincinnati Reds uniforms would be nice.” … Jonas Feit notes that the official in this shot is wearing only one glove, which I guess means he’s a fan of either Michael Jackson or Jay Gibbons. … Jared Blank notes that Fred Jones of the Knicks recently had an NOB glitch. … Reprinted from Saturday’s comments: Monta Ellis appears to have tape on the soles of his sneakers. … Alex Auld made his Bruins debut Saturday night but was still wearing his Coyotes gear. … Good treatment of the situation regarding visors in the NHL here (with thanks to Karl Anderson). … Missouri is hinting that they may wear solid gold in the Cotton Bowl (as reported by Drew Wagner). … According to this listing of unusual MLB conract clauses, Dice-K is contractually guaranteed to wear No. 18 — which, as some of you may know, is considered a prestige number of pitchers in Japan (nice find by Scott Weicksel). … Anyone else think it was a bit odd that Floyd Mayweather’s operative color on Saturday night was gray?

Nice touch for United, but it’d be better if they were wearing the throwbacks they wore all of last year. The striping on the back of this year’s shirt irks me.

My guess about the Cowboys pants looking different is the lighting at the Detroit stadium. The whole game had a different feel to it.
Seahawk number 97, Patrick Kerney, had a malfunction with the 7 on his back late in the game. Too late with the screen grab to get a picture. It was seen on a sideline shot in the 4th quarter.

Specifically the part about “Due to NCAA rules and regulations, we will not be able to produce custom jerseys featuring any player’s name whether or not you have the same last name as the player.”
Also, anyone have any idea why the Hawaii store pulled the Colt Brennan jersey? Now they only sell #1 and #7 without any name on back as pre-made replicas.
Again, sorry if this is a dupe

Posted this late Saturday after all the comments regarding the Royals’ powder blue alts:
I’ve long been a fan of the powder blues and was rooting for their return. In hindsight, though, some thoughts:
• I thought the powder blue alts with white pants would be awful. They’re not good, but not as bad as I feared.
• I like the white with the royal outline better than the royal with white outline. But I like the solid white lettering better.
• That said, with the baggy look in vogue these days, I think an all powder blue look would look just sad. A tighter fit and royal stirrups are needed to complete the look.
Consequently If Kansas City can’t get it right, don’t. It’ll screw up the good memories I have.
There, I feel better.

the dark ‘91′ sticker on the back of the patriot helmets is a tribute to deceased teammate Marquise Hill. Hill died earlier this year while jet-skiing without a life-jacket.
according to the boston globe, Hill was 24 and was well-respected both on the field and off…he spent considerable time helping with the rebuilding process in post-katrina new orleans.

I am with Paul on the Bills uniforms, but I think they should make a move to wear them full time. I found that when the Bills switched to those god-awful new uniforms they have that it was a bit over stimulating. I also liked the uniforms they wore during thier dominance in the 90s. But I am a HUGE Chiefs fan, and what I want from the Chiefs is a permanant Lamar Hunt patch or lettering like the Bears and Browns have. Mr. Hunt played a HUGE role in the NFL, not just for KC but for the whole league. One more gripe…I really do not like the red pants, I like the classy all-white look with the white pants, which happened to be Mr. Hunts favorite.
#18 by Jason Gomez on 12.10.07 9:15 am |
I too was somewhat dissapointed in the powder blue unis, for as long as I can remember those uniforms were awesome, but there is something about them that just isnt right, maybe its the whole throwback thing getting out of hand. I wouldnt have minded them wearing the blue all the time, but like stated earlier worn the right way or not at all. When I played ball I was never to fond of stirrups, but I liked the longer pants, just not the ones that go over the heel, like to the ankle or just above, I love to see color. Go Royals.

If the Bills can get away with not having the warning decal on the back of the helmet why can’t the rest of the league? Throwback only exception? Why can’t the manufacturers put the warning decal on the inside of the helmet?

Man, why all the hate on Detroit’s alts? Yeah, black is overused, but the black, blue, silver looks pretty sharp. Better than say, Baltimore’s all black unitard look.

I thought this was a standard NCAA marketing rule. Like how they always have to use “graduated” players on the NCAA videogames.
My guess is that people were trying to get around this by saying their name is George Brennan and 15 (or whatever his number is) just happens to be their favorite number as well.

Probably has been talked about before but…
Has the NFL said anything about why teams can choose to wear Sean Taylor’s memorial for multiple weeks while the Pat Tillman memorial was a one week thing and done?

Since Alex had been playing in San Antonio (AHL) before the trade, he never had time to get new equipment since both Tim Thomas and Manny Fernandez were hurt at the time of the trade. He was supposed to be the backup, but that didn’t happen with Thomas getting hurt. He didn’t even get to practice with the Bruins before they kind of threw him to the wolves in Toronto.
Good on him for winning the game, though. Expect new equipment after the Christmas break.

There were two interesting finds during Saturday’s Div. II semi. First, the Northwest Missouri kicker had a unique revo face mask that I haven’t seen before that was missing a vertical bar connecting the the top two bars of the mask. I was at the Bills game yesterday, and i must say, those Throwbacks look absolutely amazing in person. Yes the stripe patterns are a bit busy with the sleeve and sock patterns being similar but different. I will have to say the striped socks are pretty classy though.
Personally, I would like the NFL to allow throwbacks to be used at more than just two games a year. It would be nice if they did like the MLB and allowed them to be used as alternates. Then we could see a lot more Throwback games with both teams sporting the Old schools.( or they could do like a personal fantasy of mine and have the whole NFL change back to the Teams Best looking throwback for the whole season… ah, how great that’d be)
#45 by College Kid on 12.10.07 10:30 am |
It’s an NCAA Violation to profit from a player’s name. It violates the amateurism status.
This is a shaky example, but it’s similar to the NCAA Compliance rule stating that a student-athlete can be employed part-time, but the employer cannot say “Hey, Colt Brennan works for us, come shop here!” Profiting from an amateur athlete’s name is a direct violation.
We just had an equipment sale at my school (old jerseys, sweats, shoes, helmets, etc), and we couldn’t sell any old jersey with nameplates due to this very rule. The players whose names were on the jerseys no longer play here, but we still couldn’t sell them.
If you see someone at a game with a college jersey w/ a name on the back of a player, they did it themselves.

That 1992 Phillies season they wore a bunch of “throwbacks” not just the 47-49 gems. There was that famous game in SF when they had the gray and black “PHILS” jerseys and the Giants were clad in red, white and blue.
Mitchell and Ness is in Philly, so the Phils were always wearing the old threads.
They had a poster give away in 92 with the “uniforms through the years” that went from start to 1992 which was the first year in their still current duds.

I love how in the Sadaharu Oh article he mentions that he hit “only” 20 home runs in his career against legendary Hanshin Tiger hurler Yutaka Enatsu. (I realize that with only six teams in the league, you’re going to end up batting against your main rival’s ace many times, but still, how many major league batters have ever hit “only” 20 home runs against any single pitcher?)
And the Warriors-Lakers photo contains an oddity: two ostensibly illegal numbers in 17 and 26. Both those players would have had to get permission from the league to wear them, right? How do the referees signal those numbers?

Actually, the game the Phillies wore the 1948-style uniforms was against the Cubs, not the Reds. In fact, I think at least one of the 1993 baseball cards showing those unis (the Score Mickey Morandini, I believe) clearly shows a Chicago Cub in the picture. I’ll check on this when I get home this evening.
#63 by Mark in Shiga on 12.10.07 11:19 am |
#62 Matthew, I remember that game. The Cubs wore 1948 throwbacks which had the basic CHICAGO on the front and the number on the back, both of which were blue with red borders. A little better looking than the road uniforms they’ve been wearing in the last decade.
And #59 Brendan, that’s great; I’ve never seen that before! During my junior-high basketball years, we only had “legal” numbers, so the problem never came up. I figured you could have 6, 7, 8, and 9 as long as you don’t also have 51, 52, 53, 54, but what to do with 26 wasa complete mystery.

Both Griffin and Winfield wore the all whiet socks yesterday. Looked absolutely terrible, as does the all white Viking uni anyway.
When the Vikings (my favortie team) switched unis last year, the only saving things for me were a) they ditched the crappy UCLA stripe road unis, and b) they finally had purple pants, which were the best of the new uni combos. The purple were a downgrade on the old design, but at least they had better whites with pruple pants! Now, they never wear the pruple pants anymore, and make the all white even worse by wearing all white socks with it. Bletch!@!

“According to a team source I e-mailed, this was a one-time uniform used for a throwback promotion against the Reds in 1992.”
Actually, now that I think about this some more, I think that the team source was confusing these throwbacks with the 1933 throwbacks the Phils wore on Father’s Day in 1993. That game was against the Reds, and, again, pictures of the players showed up on some of the baseball cards. I’ll look for those as well when I get home.

They’re not illegal in the NBA, which has a long history of digits-higher-than-5 (Russell, Havlicek, Erving, Willis Reed, George Mikan, etc. etc.). In college (and I think also high school) no uniform digit can be higher than 5, to facilitate officials signaling fouls to the scorer’s table.

I agree, the Chiefs red pants are awesome. The all white look sucks for any team, not as bad I guess for teams like the Colts with a white helmet too.

It works for Tomlinson to continue to wear the Sean Taylor sticker because his number is 21 anyway.

Wow. I don’t read the blog on the weekends much any more, and after catching up on the past weekend (thanks, Mike, for making me curious), I am glad that I don’t. I think Bryan is doing a fine job even when I don’t agree with him, and I don’t like yellow for unis, either.
That said, Stuby, thanks for the link to the Onion with Eddie Guns decapitating the player. It was hi-larious! As to Ed H., I have a uni-related rule I have made up for him: In every game he refs, he must be showing the pythons. If that means he only refs indoor games, so be it.
As always, I disagree that the Lions alt blacks look hideous. I am not keen on the mixing with baby blue, however. In addition, I got to see the Ravens’ all-black unis for the first time, and I LOVE them. I don’t like the two stripes on the helmet because they seem more blue than purple; I don’t like the HUGE numbers on the back (though that seems more prevalent league-wide these days); I don’t like the busy, truncated sleeves. However, overall, this, to me, is a thing of beauty. Especially with low white socks. Call it the unitard look if you must, but it’s sexy. Except on linesmen.

Ok, the Colts’ uni isn’t bad, either, but I meant to point to this as a thing of beauty. I hope I got it right this times–stupid javascript. Or something like that.

The NBA doesn’t have “illegal” uniform numbers (as long as they’re single- or double-digit integers… you couldn’t wear the symbol for “pi,” for example). The refs just signal (and yell) “Foul on number Two-Seven!”
In the NCAA and high school, no digit can be larger than “5″. So “legal” numbers include “0″ and “00″, 1-5, 10-15, 20-15, 30-35, 40-45, and 50-55. Numbers “1″ and “2″ used to be “illegal,” but that changed a few years ago.
As for Mizzou wearing all-gold uniforms… as an alum, I sure hope not! Either this or this, but, for the luvva Don Faurot, not all-gold! (I remain convinced that my Tigers had no chance against Oklahoma in the all-black “unitard” look!)

I know there has been a lot said about Oregon Yellow… but from the perspective of being a former play by play man… at least they are very readable (the Silver NOB is not on some designs).
However, I have a very hard time with two tone dark. Case in point - Portland State’s road hoops unis. Hunter green with a black number and very little piping. I saw highlights from their game at Washington State and the numbers and lettering were virtually invisible.
We have a high school football team here in Seattle that wears a dark red jersey with navy blue numbers that can’t be seen from the pressbox. They are fine at field level, but the angle makes it terrible to tell a 8 from a 3.
And back in my Texas high school days, I always hated doing the games of the Rockwall Yellow Jackets. The people were nice enough… but the uniforms.. auggggh! This was a team that wore a Tennessee ORANGE with white numbers and no outlines…. and the road jerseys with light orange on white were impossible. I still don’t remember why their color was orange in the first place.
Contrast people…. contrast.

Mike Lindsey notes that Bears punter Brad Maynard was wearing his chinstrap under his jaw on Thursday night.
Is it just me, or is Garret Wolfe (#25 on the Bears) really only 1.5 feet tall?

Aaron Rodgers wears a chin strap with only one hookup, just like Brett Favre. Must be a Packer QB thing.

What’s with the Fresno Grizzlies and Yakima Bears having the same new logo? Anyone know of any earlier similar MiLB designs?

agreed. between the silver, and the shade of blue that detroit uses, the black really makes the uniform pop. unlike dook basketball, where, lets face it, its pretty stupid.
i dont think that rule applies in the nba.
in darts when a shooter scores over 5, the proper way to signal back to the score keeper is,
6- a thumb
7- thumb and index finger (fashioned like a pistol)
8- thumb, index and middle fingers, (fashioned like a double barrel pistol)
9 (ginsy)- twirling index, like an HR
as far as bryan goes. i honestly couldnt believe the aggressiveness and attacking posts toward him this weekend.
one of the reasons why i love this blog outside of its content is that everyone is very respectful of each other and there was really no flaming here.
guys, this isnt high school, and bryan isnt a substitute teacher. he should be given the same amount of respect as we afford PL and each other here.
yes, you only see the weekend posts that he puts together, but as someone who has written a post for PL, and who has done a fair amount of research for different contributions over the last 4 or 5 years (yes, prior to the blog), i can attest that the majority of what he does goes unnoticed.
its a tiring and thankless job, and we see the fruits of his work virtually every day in the content that PL writes about.
my opinion differs from PL’s, Vince’s, Bryan’s, and many of the readers here on many topics.
i dont mind purple, i love nike, for some colors, monochrome football uni’s look great, and i like the baggy pants look in baseball.
im here because i have the same interest in a certain minutae/genre as PL, Vince, Bryan, and every other reader, not because i have the same opinion on that minutae/genre as everyone else.

I think they are going to be more like this this.
The phoenix crest on the shirt that you linked to is meant to represent the club rising from the ashes after Munich. The shirt worn by the Busby Babes did not have that crest.

Great to see the Ravens, Titans and Lions all lose yesterday while wearing unitard/alt eyesores!
Black clearly isn’t intimidating the opponents of Baltimore or Detroit, and the Titans all-navy makes them look like they should be playing in the 3-A state championship game.

Phillies wore 1950-1970 throwbacks against the Reds for Fathers Day 1991. They wore the 1948 era throwbacks (as mentioned) in 1992 against the Cubs. I have jerseys from both games I bought at one of the old Phillies clubhouse sales. The 1992 one I have is Don Robinson’s, though they gave me the wrong stirrups (I have the cubs stirrups instead of the Phillies blue ones).

Mike Lindsey notes that Bears punter Brad Maynard was wearing his chinstrap under his jaw on Thursday night.
Maynard typically comes on a local Chicago FM station the day after games to talk about the previous nights performance and answer questions. That happened to be one of the questions asked of him Friday morning. He said he didn’t even realize it and that it was completely unintentional as punters are easy targets to get choked when they do things like that.
And yes, Kevin (#81,) Garrett Wolfe is tiny. Golston (#64 in the picture) runs 6′4″ and 320, while Wolfe is only 5′7″ and 186. Add in the fact that Golston is leaping and some distance disparity and Wolfe looks like a 4 year old out there.

Thanks for all the comments on the throwbacks; I knew Uni Watch readers would be more resourceful than Phillies PR people!

Could be wrong on both counts here, but…
It looked like the Giants were wearing nose-bumpers with a blue NY outlined in red, and
I thought Joe Sibka said they were going to wear red outlined in blue for the rest of the year
